Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Jet429741185980 contributionsDouble Deck Bus ChristchurchDouble Deck Bus tour of Christchurch from Lyttelton Harbour. We had Linda and Rex as our tour guides. They were informative and funny as well. Great information and sightseeing. The Double Decker bus was great. We booked this tour because of its great ratings and were definitely not disappointed. Thanks for a great day out!Written 6 December 2024
- JoleneRo50 contributionsAn amazing day! This was an amazing experience, had such a good time and we were very lucky with such clear weather that day! Our tour guide Maria was great, and knowledgeable! You get to geek out and hold or take photos with prop replicas (axe/sword/flag) which was fun, and there’s a nice lunch included with it to finish the trip nicely! Would highly recommend.Written 22 March 2023
- susanhaut0 contributionsA plusWe toured from a cruise ship out past the Lord of the Rings shooting site, to Erehwon Station, and it was all fabulous. Maria our guide was the best! The scenery, was smazing, from flat to towering mountains. We visited a working sheep farm, and all was wonderfully explained by Maria on ghe way, and Erin and Colin on the farm. Came back to the ship pumped, and feeling like we got to see a big piece of New Zealand!Written 17 February 2023
- Dianne L0 contributionsMolesworth - A great day in the High CountryMOLESWORTH STATION.. A dream of a life time to take a journey through a high country farming environment. Mark had a great amount of knowledge/history about Molesworth and made the whole trip very enjoyable. Morning tea at Acheron House was a welcome stop and then onto a yummy lunch at Molesworth Farm Homestead location. We really enjoyed our day and recommend you take this journey through a special part o New Zealand.Written 1 March 2022
- RobertT49710 contributionsGreat funOur day began with being picked up in central Christchurch at 8.30 travelling over the Canterbury plains to Springfield and onto Mt Torlesse and Rubicon Stations for the 4x4 adventure followed by jet boating. After lunch we made our way to Arthurs Pass where we boarded the Tranzalpine Train where Mark collected us to take us home. So this was an excellent day, filled with laughter and excitement. Mark was very knowledgeable and easy going. Highly recommend.Written 27 January 2021
- Scotslass200 contributionsA fantastic well run your with fantastic guideWe had an amazing day with Barry in the tour. We were the only two pick ups so we had our own wee private excursion in the land rover. The day went with clockwork and there was a contingency plan if the boat for whale watching wasn't going. We loved spending time with Barry listening to his stories. His knowledge of the area is immense and it was so interesting to hear the history as we travelled through the stunning countryside. The whale watching was something else. It is clear Barry is well thought of in the community. He seemed to know everyone and received a warm welcome at the stop offs and the other tour operators. He took us to the best local place for lunch and knew the best places for good photos. I was sorry it was Barry's last day but I hope he enjoyed our company as much as we enjoyed his. Best of luck for the future.Written 14 August 2020
- Robert R0 contributionsLong Wait TimesThree of us bought 2 day passes (January 28-29) in lieu of taking transit buses/taxis. Problem was that the downtown subway construction delayed the buses and made the initial downtown stop having to move about 3 block from the harbor area. We used it effectively getting on and off at various places like the Aquarium until we got off at the museum. We spent about 2 hours in the museum and then returned to the bus stop and waited for the bus. After over 45 minutes waiting, we gave up and hailed a taxi. Interesting that 3 rival yellow hop buses came to and left the museum. Hmmm. Next time, we will buy tickets for the yellow bus.Written 26 March 2020
- patriciahR4583UY0 contributionsA beautiful sunny day to see whalesI had a great experience on this tour. I was picked up at my hotel and we headed to Kaikoura. Our guide showed us the sights as we drove to Kaikoura. We had a small group which was nice as we got to chat. The whale watch was wonderful. We saw a sperm whale right away. Then shortly after we saw another! I would take this tour again.Written 24 March 2020

- 411lynnr0 contributionsLovely few hoursHaving arrived in Auckland, where I was staying two nights, I decided to buy the 24 hour bus combo which allowed me to take the two different bus routes and to give me a quick overview of Auckland itself. John was our driver/guide for the following hour and gave a very informative tour, taking us to each of the stops on their easy to follow brochure and adding regular quips of 'useless' fun facts and information. There are several lots of roadworks being carried out in Auckland which affect both routes, however John used the time spent queuing to get through these, to elaborate about the area. The weather was glorious and sitting on the top deck gave a 'birds eye' view of the wonderful views available in Auckland and at the same time topped up my suntan. The red route bus was waiting when we got back to the original pick up point near the Sky Tower, and this enabled me to make a seamless transfer for a further hour of sightseeing.Written 15 March 2020
- Sh0rtleg0 contributions2 Whales, seals and albatrossExcellent day out. We were very fortunate with the weather though. Picked up from hotel on Christchurch Steve gave us a full commentary on the drive to Kaikoura, the whale-watching team were great and we had an excellent fish and chips before returning to Christchurch. Recommended but hope you are lucky with the weather.Written 14 March 2020

The company are selling to many tickets and not enough buses Had to wait 50 mins to get on the bus then was asked to leave at the next stop to key people on. Avoid at all costsWritten 8 March 2020
- BernardR7920 contributionsExcellent Driver Commentary, Informative TripLike most of this type of trip it is a good way to see the layout of the city and learn about the history and recent events that happened, in particular the terrible quakes. The blue route specially addresses this issue issue with the graphic visits to the red zone where houses have been cleared leaving a graphic reminder of the event. It is sad to see the scars of the cathedral still remaining, however hopefully this will be addressed in the foreseeable future. The driver commentary, in particular from Chris, was superb with quiet, calm and immensely informative detail imparted in a highly professional manner.Written 5 March 2020

Great experience to see where they had the Riders of Rohan capital, Edoras…
While the weather was a little wet, the Tour Guide Nick really brought the experience to life…
I highly recommend it for even non-LOTR fans, as the scenery & experience of climbing Mt Sunday was special

Took a tour with Hassle Free Tours named Journey to Middle Earth: Lord of the Rings.
Natasha was the guide and she was amazing!
She was very attentive to client requests, adjusted temperature when needed, provided "silence breaks" when people needed rest, was very entertaining with her stories and at the same time very informative.
Highly recommended.

You get picked up around 8:30 AM and start going towards your destination immediately which takes about 3 hours with a stop at a cafe in between for about 30 minutes. Our tour guide (who’s name I can’t remember) was an awesome lady. She picked us up on a Monday morning and didn’t know where she was going in Christchurch and knew nothing about the place, which is fine, just something to note. She was very friendly and funny and had a lot of insightful stories. A lot of the stories consisted of another tour guides background in the lord of the rings films as peter jackson’s security. There was a lot of information you probably couldn’t get elsewhere which is very valuable to a hardcore fan. Looking out of the bus was lovely until the windows fogged up and dirt started sticking to them from the outside. I took a rag and wiped it at the cafe which is what I recommend doing. Once you actually arrive at Mount Sunday, the journey up the hill can be a tad difficult for unfit people but it was relatively easy for the payoff. The top of mount Sunday is absolutely breathtaking, and the guide even let us carry The Shards of Narsil up the hill. You stay up at the peak for about an hour, which could’ve been longer for me, and i’m not typically a person who likes to be at one spot for too long. There’s rocks to sit on, beautiful spots to take memorable pictures, and it’s a small group, so everyone chatted with each other at one point or another which was very pleasant. I noticed our tour guide talked to us all individually at least once she was very sweet and interested in what I had to say. When we walked back down, she served us lunch which were some very delicious sandwiches and even treated us to a glass of champagne while we were outside which was an absolute treat. I will warn you, it’s very easy to spill your champagne there so drink it first then eat. When we loaded up to go back home, she played the appendices of LOTR on a TV in the van with some easter eggs which was nice as it drew my attention more to the LOTR aspect of the trip. Ultimately, this trip is very worth if you’re a LOTR fan, just don’t get your hopes up for Helm’s Deep as it isn’t visible whatsoever whatever they tell you. You’ll feel accommodated and like you’re in a group of friends. Overall a great time and I came back with a happy stomach and lots of amazing memories.

Bus was very small and cramped for the duration of the trip. How this lot justify the price for the activities is beyond me. At the commencement of the tour the driver could not have been less interested in taking the passengers, endless commentary on Lord of the Rings extras or other jobs on the movie offer little entertainment. Being greeted with “Oh its a 3 hour trip to the mountains” sets the scene for a rushed and uninteresting trip that shows you very little. A word of advice to budding LotR enthusiasts, you will not see any sets or memorabilia on this tour, it is a vulture tour group cashing in on the locations for filming.
If you would like to Journey to Middle Earth to experience where the Lord of the Rings movies were filmed then I would strongly recommend you hire a car and drive yourself. Hasslefree tours say that you get morning tea and lunch included, however what they fail to mention is that the morning tea is a muffin and a cup of instant coffee served by the local Country Womens association and Lunch is a lacklustre sandwich that is either eggs or ham and the odd banana.
Hasslefree offer no pre selection to meet dietary requirements let alone just some basic choices, for the high premium being charged a far more artisan lunch should have been provided.
The exorbitant cost of this day trip is not worth it and Hasslefree ought to be ashamed of the blatant fleecing of tourists.
You should hire your own car and go your own way. The only highlight of this tour was when it ended, at the astonishing cost of $800.00+ USD for 2 people and not even a bottle of water offered.
Shout out to the Mt Summers Tavern for the exceptional pie and sauce for lunch. The only thing that saved us.

Firstly the views were absolutely amazing! It’s a long day on the bus with limited stops. I booked this tour thru our cruise ship and it cost $300,AU. money well spent? Not really. I don’t see why it was so expensive. The guide, Jill, was unprepared. She had notes but hadn’t brushed up on them. She told boring personal stories. I honestly don’t care if her and her dog hiked up a mountain.
We stopped at Mt Somer for morning tea (elevenses) the local ladies made the best muffins I’ve ever had. Then we hit the dirt roads. If you have hip, neck, or back problems I really wouldn’t recommend this tour. We watched a short clip about Edoras to remind us how it looked during the movie.
Once we got in the mountains the scenery was awesome. The hill were they filmed it was unremarkable as there was nothing left behind from the movie which was part of the agreement that was made. It took 8 months to build the set, 3 weeks of filming for 11 minutes of movie. Then back to Mt Somer for sandwiches and slices then straight thru back to the ship.

We are delighted to join in this tour with others. The tour guide is great; she takes care of everyone's needs and surprises us with all the weapons and swords for photography at the hilltop, one of the filming locations of the Lord of the Rings.
We have good lunches at a very nice cafe ... the weather, the surroundings, the view is wonderful! Strongly recommended to join this tour!

Our guide Elliott was friendly and informative, talking of history and pointing out things as we drove through beautiful scenery. He showed us behind the scene videos and provided ample rest breaks and comfort stops. The weather cooperated and although a little daunting, the climb up to the top of Mt Sunday was manageable albeit slow. Wonderful views all around znd fun photos with replica weapons! All in all a great day

Lord of the Rings aside, this place is well worth a visit. It was an incredible place! Mark, the tour guide, treated us to lots of great chat and information about the local area, along with all things Lord of the Rings.
Fortunately, the weather favoured us, and we were treated to nothing but breathtaking views all day. Mark’s great driving allowed us to make it to Mount Sunday as well, and have a mooch around on top of it.
This really isn’t a tour to be missed. It’s well worth it!

I only had limited time in Christchurch. Our scheduled day trip to Mt. Sunday (Edoras filming location) was canceled due to extreme weather conditions. Our driver, Cheryl, volunteered to take us the following day even though they hadn't planned to do a tour then. Our tour was amazing! Cheryl is a great and knowledgeable guide and the scenery is stunning. It was an incredible trip and I'm so thankful they worked to make it happen for us. I highly recommend this tour whether you're a fan of the Lord of the Rings or not! Thank you for an awesome trip!

God's creation is truly amazing, taking in so many different landscapes, views, sounds and delights for the eyes and minds along the way. Obviously a bus travels more slowly than cars and so the trip took longer than per Google maps estimates.
Also a bus cannot stop at some places with spectacular views as to be expected. Great to travel all the way to Mount Sunday and to be able to take the walk to the top for a 360degree view.
We didn't have our sandwich lunch until 3pm and it was at a working wool-shed, as the normal, more comfortable venue was booked by for a wedding. Pity.
Natasha was helpful, friendly, drove safely and informative throughout trip.

Hi, we will be arriving at Mt Somers on 31 August 2022, and we will be staying the night there. We plan to visit Edoras on the 1st of September 2022, but we are only planning a half day trip there.
Is the time sufficient? And is the weather suitable for hiking as we understand that it is still winter time.

Hi, i have an infant of 15months old
travelling with me. But i didn’t see an option to select a headcount for her. The Child age for selection is from 5 years old. Does that mean she cannot join the tour due to age limit or there is no charges for kids below 5 years old? Please advise.

The drive is quite bumpy and the hike is quite exhaustive so probably not suitable for such a young kid.

Hi, I'm planning a trip to Christchurch for a few days around 5th of November. I was wondering if you could let me know if there are any bookings already made around that time? I'm a solo traveler and would like to avoid cancellations due to insufficient number of participants. Thank you!
Written 29 September 2019
Hi, you will need to check with the agency when you do your booking. Usually it’s 2 to go so chances of trip cancelled will be slim as there will be other Travelers who will join you as well. Thanks.

Hello, I was picked up at Rendevous hotel Christchurch. Usually they will pick you up if your hotel is located in the CBD area. You can check with the agency if they can pick you up at your hotel. :)

We will be docking at the Akaroa port. Do you offer the - Lord of the Rings 'Journey to Edoras' Tour from Akaroa?
Written 15 May 2019
I’m not sure. Probably not as this is a reasonable distance from Christchurch city. I think they only do pick ups from around Christchurch itself. You are better off contacting the company direct ( maybe you meant to do that?). Cheers

My family are planning to go to Christchurch, New Zealand in March and we would like to visit the site of the Lord of the Rings. Because 7 of us will be travelling, we are planning to rent a car to go there. Could you please tell me more about it? how is the road to go there? how many hours of driving from Christchurch? How much is the entrance fee? Thank you very much for your help.
Written 17 January 2019
The trip from central Christchurch to Mt Potts Station, where the filming of the Edoras scenes took place is approximately 2.5hours. The majority of the road is bitumen with only the final few kms being gravel and dirt. There is no town as such and no shops so you need to take your lunch with you or plan to head back out to the nearest town. About four kms from Mt Potts station gate and lodge is the parking area for Mt Sunday (the Edoras mount). A two km walk is then required. I can't say if there are fees but it is private land. I would highly recommend the tour. Everything is provided and the insights are great. The drive back to Christchurch can be undertaken by a different route, thus affording you further views of this wonderful country.
