Not only did we see the places where some of the LOTR was filmed, but we were also given a quick tour of Wellington as we made our way to specific sites as a bonus. The all day tour was definitely worth it! I will also say that Richard was excellent in making sure that my friend who has slight mobility issues was provided with assistance when needed. He was very patient and helpful. While my friend was not able to see every location of filming, she was very happy at being able to be as close as she could be. Great company and stellar service! That was the highlight for me - the history and the stories. Hoping to become a tour guide myself - Richard was a very good person to learn from. And we fit in a lot of places in a short time . Even our son who is a super-fan learned some stuff he hadn’t heard before. The whole day was engaging and interesting with lots of local history and anecdotes. The tour was very personal as it was just us and Lester and he went out of his way to make sure we had fun and were comfortable. We can’t thank him enough. The Te Papa Museum was a hidden gem we didn’t even know was a part of the tour and St Paul’s Church was magnificent. One it is all day so you see a lot more areas surrounding Wellington. Also the Lord of the Ring production and design company is a lot more then just LOTR regarding movie special effects. We had an amazing morning on the half day LOTR tour, it was cold and drizzly (our favourite weather - felt like home!) but the tour bus was warm and the drives around Wellington were stunning. It was wonderful going on the Weta Cave tour and seeing the filming spots for the movies but it was also amazing to hear Lester's stories about native plants and Maori legends - it made the walks and views that much more immersive. We will definitely be visiting again to fit the full day in!

sadly, I am very late on making this review. My husband and I went in March of 2023 for our honeymoon trip (wouldn't let me select that far back).
if you are anything like I am, I take reviews serious when trying to plan an activity. We flew from Auckland to Wellington just for this tour. My husband and I are big fans of Lord of the Rings and this tour appeared to be right up our alley, and it was! it was so great that we decided to make it a full day tour and was able to pay cash after the WETA tour. I highly suggest just doing the full day tour and embarking on the path of LOTR. The tour guide was very educated in LOTR and a great photographer since he was mostly the one taking pictures of us at each destination.
Can you do this tour by yourself without a tour guide? yes, BUT the information they give you during the tour is the big seller. Behind the scenes information that draws you in, they also carry around posters so you can visualize the movies. I only added two photos to not spoil the tour for anyone interested.
Highly recommend. Would do it again.

We had a great time on this tour, not being LOTR or Hobbit fans we found the Weta workshop fascinating, to see the amount of work done here on special effects for so many movies was a real eye opener. The tour of Mount Victoria and some of the filming locations was very special and so well described by our tour guide. Highly recommend this tour.

Doesn't get any better than Richard. So knowledgeable and passionate about his city! He's also a great conversationalist driving between locations. The flying fox was a real treat! With so much to do and see in Wellington I would recommend a tour with him to everyone and anyone! Thanks Richard! Looking forward to the next one!

We had a real problem getting off the ship. The tour guide/ bus driver waited about 30 mins for us. In the end they had to leave. When we finally got off the ship another guide called the boss. He came and picked us up and drove us to meet our tour. Such a nice man, and what great service. They all went out of their way to help us. The tour was fantastic. The tour guides had a lot of knowledge, he was also fun to be with. The tour was much more than we expected. A must for all Lord of the rings fans.

Booked as an extra activity in Wellington from off of our cruise ship. Picked up at Port dock which was great. Had to stop for a few other pickups at hotels in town which had a bit of confusion with the bookings. Our first stop was the WETA workshop and made it in time for the tour. Tour was great. Then went to the Mt Victoria LOTR movie sites, which was interesting. I had booked this for my husband as he is a fan, me not so much a movie fan. Guide was great in dropping off the groups where they wanted on the return in town. Overall, really glad we did this tour.

The visit to Weta Workshop and cave was just great - enthusiasm abounds. Could have easily spent two more hours there. The movie sites were a bit underwhelming, but the setting makes up for it. It would have been nice if the driver had more background information and commentary. And making the driver use a bunch of poster-size floppy pictures did not seem optimal. But overall great!

I can’t recommend this tour enough! Nathan our tour guide was incredibly knowledgable and friendly. Nathan showed great pride for Wellington, New Zealand and the local film industry. The tour was well organised and ran very smoothly. We were collected from our ship and were set up with the best information to get the most out of Wellington after the tour.

Wish I'd done the overnight. Although this is a typical tourist spot, it's be n done very tastefully. I saw how hard the filming, directing, producing is and how creative all the people are who help bring the final idea to completion.
I wish I'd also kept time for the Weta workshop. And, Wellington Te Papa museum is absolutely amazing. You need a full day to enjoy it.

We booked a half day tour and enjoyed a lovely Sunday morning with Mitch. He was friendly and knowledgeable, with nice mix of LOTR, Weta and local information. We would definitely use this company again if we find ourselves in Wellington.
