- alexjarvis19940 contributionsMust do for LOTR fans!Pick up and drop off transfer was super easy and we even stopped off at the old cinema on the way and had a look around! The tour at Wētā was great, very cool to see costumes and props used in the movies and also learnt a lot. Wish it could have gone on for longer!Written 7 September 2024
- Tikitourz0 contributionsFun inspiring timeLove love loved the whole thing. A must go to in Auckland. Price is bit on high side everyone should be able to see this place! Inspiring for all ages. The presenter was very cool spoke bit too fast needed to be a bit louder. Overall my 11 year old would probably go back again.8/10Written 1 September 2024
- mariasG5156GL0 contributionsIncredible experience. Absolutely worth itThe guide was amazing. Super excited to share his experience and tell us a lot interesting facts. Also the room with the make up artist and the aluminium designer was amazing. The tour was incredible.Written 8 August 2024
- GandR1760 contributionsIf you liked TLOR, this is a MUSTIt was a very wet Wellington day. Being picked up kept us out of the worst of the weather. The Cave was amazing, much of it was out of our price range but we did come away with a beautiful book. I had no idea Weta had worked on so many projects 160+. Being able to handle some of the props from the films was awsome. All in all I definitely recommend a visit.Written 7 August 2024
- jeffreyw598j0 contributionsVery interesting morning..We did this tour with Lester as our guide.. he was probably our favorite local guide during 2 week trip around Australia and New Zealand - very knowledgeable, enthusiastic and interesting! Great job Lester - we enjoyed when he showed as around in the park/forest where LOTR scenes had been filmed! The WETA workshop is super cool for movie buffs - be aware - there ARE some areas where you are allowed to touch items and take photos, and others where you are not.. it was fun to see one of Peter Jackson's actual Oscars though! (you can't touch that one!) - also - don't miss the super enthusiastic lady who sculpts using aluminum foil, and teaches you how to do the same - hands on! Overall - a very fun experience. Recommended.Written 25 July 2024
- Julie B0 contributionsAmazing teamMy daughter absolutely loved this The tour guides were so helpful and really enjoyed what they did I was unwell and could not continue the tour, the staff looked after me checking on me regularly and also reported back that my 14 year old daughter was happy and ok The team were so professional and a credit to Wētā and to New Zealand tourismWritten 17 July 2024

- mariarN8184TY0 contributionsClose-up look at movie costumes, weaponry and craftwork. The one-and-a-half-hour tour goes very quickly, as it's broken down into blocks in separate rooms. Weekdays would probably be best because you would see the sword-makers at work, but we enjoyed our weekend visit! All the areas of arts, crafts and technology are shown.Written 5 June 2024

Who knew our Wellington had such a hidden gem 💎 They are not just about LOTR or Avatar, the amount of movies WETA has played a part in will blow your mind 💥 From moldings of tin foil to flying dragons, moldings of latex to sculptured arms, legs, heads to full costume, 3D printing, the list goes on... I had an amazing time learning so much about our own countrys movie involvements on the big screen and can't wait to do the next tour. So if you want the full tour of this amazing WETA Workshop followed by a 2 course meal lunch at the beautiful Karaka Cafe on the Wellington waterfront afterwards, check it out on their web page or Facebook. Cost per adult is $155.00 (on this particular tour) with pick up from the bus stop at 145 Wakefield Street (next to the Michael Fowler Centre) starting with a road tour of WETA sights. You too will have an amazing time, trust me you won't regret it...this Hobbitsis...out! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Written 20 May 2024
- Anonymous8550 contributionsNot disabled friendly but otherwise, unique experienceCan't hear the videos inside the workshop OR the tour guide there. He didn't seem to care although if you were into the fantasy part, he would spend personal time with you explaining details...almost a split personality. The transfer driver was okay and we didn't have a car so it was necessary. It was not disabled friendly at all. My friend has near total hearing loss and I asked the guide to face him so he could at least read his lips....didn't happen. What a shame, it reflects quite poorly on the otherwise impressive artistic group. It was a unique experience, I'd say go unless you need any type of accommodation.Written 28 April 2024
- R4705BLcarolined0 contributionsInteresting dayWe did Weta Cave. Very interesting. I told them before that my son was Deaf so they made sure subtitles were on when needed. Lots of interesting things learntWritten 19 April 2024
- spenceleysUK0 contributionsVery interestingOur transfer was delayed a bit by roadworks - clearly beyond the control of the company. However, the guide, gave great information about the whole area, while we were queing in traffic. The tour itself was very interesting, showing how prosthetics are made, and giving information on the levels of skill, and detail involved in the process of model making. We are not 'Lord of The Rings' aficianados, but we thoroughly enjoyed the tour.Written 3 April 2024

Weta Workshops is a fantastically talented organisation that has spent a great deal of time in putting together a series of exhibits that showcases their amazing work. However, sadly we weren't able to submerge into the magic as our guide openly admitted to (and semi bragged) to have had a heavy night the night before. The wide yawning in our faces throughout and generally hungover demeanour undermined this experience and value for money for us.

If you are a Lord of the Rings fan, the WETA Cave is the place for you. It is easy to find thanks to the three huge ogres in the Hobbit outside the building. You can visit here for free. If you prefer to go behind the scenes to see some props, you can book a paid tour. WETA Workshop New Zealand is known for its work on the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. In fact, WETA Workshop created 48,000 individual pieces including creatures, characters, props, weapons, and armor for Middle-earth. Lots of related items for sale at the gift shop from t-shirts to statues.

The Weka Cave is a reasonably small shop. But if you are lucky enough to book a tour (approx 90 minutes) where you get great insights into what actually goes on at Weka Workshops. Booking for tours are recommended as they are popular and limited in numbers.
I got the public Metlink bus from the CBD which was easy, 30 minutes and cheap ($2 each way).

This was OK but it felt like a visit to a museum. There was little sign that anyone was actually doing creative work, as we were shepherded through a series of rooms closed off from the workshop itself.
Sometimes they offer creative hands-on workshops but there were no dates for these available around this time. At all.
Having watched the LotR and Hobbit appendices (extended versions) once or twice, we probably knew more from those than we found out in this tour.

Caitlyn was a fabulous guide who was very passionate about her job and showed with her knowledge and background while on the tour. Handled a large group with ease and both adults and kids enjoyed the look behind the scenes of movie making. Dr Tinfoil was also brilliant - amazing to see what sculptures he could construct in a few minutes with foil and cutlery 😂

Overall, this place didn’t quite meet my expectations. I think it’s more suited for families, groups, or movie fans who would enjoy learning about models and designs. I’m not a movie fan, but as a recent design graduate with a focus on 3D and animation, I thought it might be interesting for someone like me who appreciates that kind of work.
I took the introductory tour and attended the sculpting workshop. The tour felt more like sitting in a classroom, with visitors listening to long presentations—90 minutes instead of the usual 5-10 minutes you’d expect in a real class, which dragged on. You can’t take pictures, which I understand because of copyright issues, but as a tourist attraction, they could invest more to create a larger, non-copyrighted space. It’s pretty cramped at the moment. At the end, they take your picture and give you a code to download a watermarked photo for free, or you can print it for NZD 20.
The sculpting workshop was a slightly better experience. The instructor was friendly and always smiling, and we got to take the clay home, which was nice. But apart from that, I didn’t think it was worth the cost. If you’re into DIY and have tools at home, I wouldn’t recommend it. It’s more for tourists or people who don’t work in creative fields but enjoy these types of activities. You’d save a lot by just buying some play dough and watching YouTube tutorials—you could still have a fun time with friends for a fraction of the price.

Kia ora,
Thank you so much for your review, we appreciate the time taken to do so.
We are sorry to hear that our tour did not meet your expectations, and that you felt that it dragged on and was cramped. Our goal is to have all of our guests actively engaged throughout the entire 90 minute duration of the tour. Was there a specific area of the tour where you felt that it was especially drawn out or camped?
We are always looking for ways to improve our experience for guests, so any further feedback is appreciated.
In regards to our Magic Memories photos, there are two free un-watermarked photos available if you scan the QR code, it requires you to scroll to the bottom of the page to download :)
Thanks again for your time and all the best,
Caitlin

My partner and I were seriously disappointed with the tour. A gabbling guide trying to talk over the noise of a tour group in front of us, as he shephered us through a series of curtained off areas displaying various costumes and design models - most of which seemed to have seen better days and could do with a serious freshening up! As an expensive tour concept we felt it incredibly underwhelming - not a patch on the Harry Potter experience in GB at the same price! and where were The Thunderbirds which seem to feature in these reviews?

Kia ora A321BIRD,
I am really sorry to read your feedback. We have responded to your email as well and thank you for the open communication. We have worked hard to ensure our pricing is kept lower ($50) because we are a small, bespoke tour, we are not the Harry Potter experience (upwards of $150 per person). I appreciate that our reputation as a leader in the film industry may have led you to believe we were something different, but we pride ourselves on showcasing our humble beginnings and quirky works.
We have since refunded you for your tour and once again we are really sorry we did not meet your expectations this time.
Kind regards,
Jade

Really enjoyed just looking at everything but listening to our guide provided the details that made it come alive. Being an 'oldie' I enjoyed the Thunderbirds display and learning the tricks of the trade. It would have been great to have seen people actually working and hearing from them.

One LOTR fan with 2 tag-a-longs did the tour and we all thoroughly enjoyed it. If you have any interest in movies at all, you will be glad to have experienced this 90 minute tour. Kevin, our guide, was lovely, humorous, patient and knowledgeable.
If you are a LOTR fan, you will love the tour almost as much as the gift shop…you could easily spend a fortune if you have it 😉
Do yourself a favour, escape reality for a while and visit this little slice of heaven.

Was a fantastic experience especially if you are a LOTR fan (obviously). The guide Sully was so enthusiastic and knowledgeable it's a real treat to see someone enjoy their work so much. You get to see so many bits from the film and pick them up, hold them etc. Questions are encouraged and you can really nerd out here haha. Only sad part is you can't take pictures inside but it's due to copyright. The shop was great and can take pictures in there with some life-size models/costumes. Bought a gift that was reasonably priced. Would definitely recommend if you're in Wellington. There are bits from other films too but really it's a LOTR session here, but it's really interesting to see how talented the artists are here and the detail & creativity that goes into all the work!
