- caraandjohnt0 contributionsGreat half day craft beer tourWe had a great afternoon and evening with Phil. We wanted to get out of the city itself and see some of the breweries a bit further out. Phil got us in at late notice to see Chris at Kereru, where I had two of the best beers I've ever had - a French Saison and a truffle infused, barrel aged barley wine. Next stop was a bit more corporate craft at Panhead in Beertown, then on to Baylands Brewing which was pumping. Phil was great on recommendations and knows the breweries really well. Thanks!!Written 27 August 2024

Our guide, Mel, was very informative, did a great job, and was compassionate towards my stepmother who had a lot of mobility issues. The wineries were lovely, especially the last 2 which weren’t as crowded and allowed for more time to taste each wine. The food we got at the last place, and eating it in the beautiful setting, was primo. The only bad point was the transport in which my dad, stepmother, and I we were wedged into the back of the 9 person van. No one more than 5 1/2 feet tall should/could sit back there and no one who is at all claustrophobic. I did ok (but it was still unpleasant) but my elderly parents really had a hard time.

Thanks for the review and I have passed on your positive feedback to your driver guide Mel.
I appreciate that those with mobility issues may have trouble accessing the rear seats of our 9 seater vans and have instructed our driver guides to make sure they can use the more accessible seats in the front rows in future. It may also help to let operators know in advance if you do have any mobility issues so we can make more suitable vans available if possible.

Fantastic day! Our guide Phil was attentive and knowledgeable both about the wineries and about this area of the country. 3 wineries gave us plenty to taste, but no so many that the wine started to blend together out of drunkenness. Any more and it might be too much. We booked this tour because it offered pick up and drop off from Wellington, and we were able to fully enjoy the wine and the scenery since all the logistics were taken care of!

We did this tour on our long weekend trip to Wellington and found it an excellent way to spend a leisurely Sunday afternoon.
The tour guide Phil was excellent, he emailed shortly after booking to confirm pickup details and messaged us when he arrived at our hotel, right on time. Tour groups are intentionally small, there were 7 in our group which was the perfect size.
Phil was extremely knowledgeable about the region and provided excellent commentary on the picturesque drive. The stop at the summit of the Remutaka Ranges was great and provided an excellent opportunity for taking photos.
In Martinborough we stopped at three wineries; Poppies, Moy Hall and Te Kairanga. Each stop was great and offered a different selection of wines (and at the last stop, a gin!) to try. We were fortunate to have a nice warm day and got to spend lots of time enjoying the sun. Although lunch isn't included in the tour there is the opportunity to order food at one of the wineries, the stops are certainly long enough to allow sufficient time for a meal. I think it works better this way, as those who might have a big breakfast before the tour can have something light, whilst others can go for something more substantial.
Phil was happy to customise the tour and by popular vote of the group we switched our stop at C'Est Cheese for the Wine Bank in Martinborough town centre instead, for one last glass of wine before making our way back to Wellington.
The tour began at 10am and we were back at our hotel by around 3:30pm. Although there are other tours which go for longer I think that the length of this tour is pretty good as is. We didn't feel rushed at any of the stops, there was plenty of time for tasting and purchasing (for those who wanted to) and it meant we got back to Wellington at a reasonable enough time to go for a leisurely walk around town before having dinner.
I would definitely recommend this tour for anyone looking for a fun afternoon of sightseeing, wine tasting and good company. Thank you Phil and Zozo Travel!

Loved the tour completely! Phil did a great job with both sharing his knowledge in winemaking, New Zealand and Martinborough specifically, but also gave a nice historic tour with some interesting details of the places we passed by. Three wineries are perfect to both have an idea of the wines but still stay sober enough to appreciate the tasting :) The timing was also perfect - half-day, as promised. Highly recommend!

Phil was an excellent host with a vast amount of local knowledge and an all round general nice guy! A very informative gentleman who is happy to answer your questions about anything from the local areas to where the best place to shop is. A pleasure to have his company for the day.
Our small group was well informed on our journey about early settlers to the area and local place names and why they were named or who they were named after.
The wineries we visited were truly unique as their wines were only available to purchase via the cellar door or online - no supermarket wines on this tour!
Each winery had a great back story, which Phil could foretell with full details. He knew what type of grapes they used, where they were planted right through to the vineyards planting regimes. So much knowledge!
Everyone was treated with respect and Phil has a great connection with the vineyard owners and their staff which makes for an even more enjoyable trip.
I highly recommend this Tour and Phil. I will definitely be back!

What a great day. Small group tour which allowed us to get a taste of what Martinborough had to offer. Our guide Phil was extremely knowledgeable not only about the wines but the region as a whole. We visited three wineries on our trip. A great mix of small, local wineries as well as a more commercial one. The owner of Muirlea Rise is an absolute gem of the area, his passion shining through. The short stop at the cheese shop was nice but it would have been better if we did a little tasting as well. If I had to list a downside it would be that at times it felt a bit rushed but then again it's just an introduction.

Thanks for your feedback and suggestions. Great to hear you enjoyed the tour!
For those looking for a sample of the cheese we offer a Martinborough Foodie Half Day Tour which includes cheese, chocolate and a winery visit. Alternatively there is our full day Martinborough Winery and Foodie Tour that includes comprehensive stops at each of our foodie partner locations and is a longer but more leisurely tour option.

Good views and commentary along the way. Excellent first stop but felt very rushed from then on. Third stop involved very little information about the wine as very busy staff offered us three samples to taste while trying to serve lunch to a very busy restaurant.
Unfortunately, we had to depart before some people in our group finished their lunch. On the whole we enjoyed the tour, but it was too rushed and the guide was rather fond of the sound of his own voice.

Hi Allie,
Sorry to hear your experience with was not up to standard.
I've made a note of your response and we will make some changes to provide a little extra time for the whole experience.
Admittedly a wine tour on Easter Sunday is always a little bit hectic as the staff at each location are working under different rules with regards to providing alcohol and food. With everyone legally requiring a meal due to the trading laws the staff at the final stop were under the pump which was an issue for your tour specifically rather than a general problem. We should have forseen that though and dealt with it timewise a little better. Apologies for that.
It sounds like your drive guides enthusiasm for the local history of the area may have been a bit much. I'll take your feedback on board and let him know.

Our interaction with Zozo was super with all our questions, time changes and added guests. Simon our guide was just wonderful and knowledgeable. His driving skills through the mountains was flawless. His knowledge of the area was an extra bonus. The wineries ZOZO picked were wonderful on so many levels— the tastings, the helpful sommeliers and the VIEWS. We unexpectedly lunched at Poppies because where we were to go for a cheese tasting was closed as was our third winery. All was wonderful and I can’t say enough kind words of our hosts-the New Zealand people are jus beyond gracious, kind and lovely. Thank you Phil and Simon for giving us a lovely day!

Fabulous tour, despite the drizzle!
Our trip was full of witty banter thanks to the Kiwi version of Louis Theroux, who was just as sexy! Phil knows his stuff regarding wine and the region.
As well as the interesting vineyards, we visited a couple of local stores and left feeling we knew much about the Martinborough region.
Highly recommended. A well worth 5 star experience.

Hi Briana. Sorry I didn't see this question earlier. Not sure why I wasn't sent notification. The $107pp price was a June only promotion post-COVID which is why the July date you requested was a different price. Cheers!
