About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- LL987654320 contributionsAuckland ExcursionI know you can't see a city in one day but Andrew did a wonderful job of taking my husband and I around Auckland. We started by driving along the harbor and up to the highest point in Auckland with a 360 view of the city. We drove along the beach, saw the Wellington city sign, the Weta studios, had a very good lunch at the Chocolate Fish Cafe, saw the NZ War Museum, downtown, rode the cable car, etc. Andrew was very friendly, and knowledgeable and we enjoyed the day we spent with him! I would definitely recommend Andrew and this tour! You won't regret it!Written 9 February 2025
- DraperTraveler0 contributionsLord of the Rings tour WellingtonSolid tour guide who loved to take pictures of our 8 person group. However, he didn’t wear a headset microphone so tour members in back of rental van couldn’t hear him as we drove. Also, tour guide should have used large pictures of the actual movie scene at sites where sets were torn down - a tour member pulled up movie scenes on his phone so we all could see what was there. Great lunch spot chosen by guide!Written 6 February 2025
- FredD8690 contributionsGreat small group experienceLiz was a fun, low key tour guide. It was us with 2 other couple’s in her Mercedes Van. We were stress free as she navigated the highlights of Wellington! The Chocolate Fish Cafe was delicious!Written 2 February 2025
- 660reuvens0 contributionsWellington thru Capital ToursWe just explored Wellington on a half day tour with John of Capital Personalized Schools . In a few short hours he took us around this fascinating city in which he has spent most of his life. We saw interesting sites such as Weta Cave in which Lord of the Rings characters were crafted, rode the Wellongton cable car, and strolled in the Wellington Botanical Gardens. Tour well recommended.Written 15 January 2025
- juliewP7322IF0 contributionsLots of beer to try!!Andrew was great- he took us to 3 breweries and gave us a beautiful drive around Wellington and all around the coast. Very knowledgeable about Wellington and New Zealand and the island bay.Written 15 January 2025
- s24ba2154f0f545420240 contributionsMartinborough Wines and communitiesVery informative. Got many choices of where we wanted to go and what to see. Our guide was very friendly and had a very good time. Only down side was size of car. The back seat was very cramped for 3 adults on a tour that took an Hour+ just to get from Welllington. Only good to say beyond that.Written 19 December 2024
- tz540 contributionsGreat WellingtonThanks to our guidedriver we had a great time in Wellington and enjoyed a beautiful city and landscape. We only regretted that time passed by very quickly.Written 14 December 2024
- sandradT9659NT0 contributionsGreat brewery tour dayWe had a great time with Andrew on our Wellington Brewery tour. There was just the 2 of us with Andrew and he took us to 3 breweries. He was always up for a chat; was very informative about his hometown and the beers we were trying. He also took us around the waterfront, describing its history, a quick stop at Weta Workshop and then up to Mt Victoria for the view. we thoroughly recommend Andrew at Capital Personalised Tours for this private craft beer tour.Written 8 December 2024
- 670harshn0 contributionsOverpricedVery expensive for what it’s worth. It says includes tickets to places, but the only place you needed ticket is the cable car, which is not that expensive at all. Package also mentions refreshments and tea but No refreshments or afternoon tea was given. Only stopped for lunch at a cafe. Tour is only good for you, if you can’t drive or google what places to visit yourself. You can do the whole tour by yourself (if you can hire a car and drive) under NZD $200 for 2-3 people and eat at your choice of restaurant. Tour guide is good but overall it’s just too pricey for what it is.Written 17 August 2024
- Relax307057816520 contributionsTrue VIP ExperienceI had the great pleasure of taking a personalized half-day tour of Wellington CBD with John as my guide, and I had an absolutely wonderful time! He was very knowledgeable of the city sites and its detailed and fascinating history, and stories peppered with his delightful humor and friendly demeanor. The itinerary included many of the best spots in Wellington such as Mt. Victoria, Cable Car, Parliament, the Weta Workshop and Stone Street Studios, with beautiful drives in between through the windy roads and along the seaside. This was my third visit to NZ, and still learned so much on this tour, including some of the area's best places to eat and delve into the deliciously diverse cuisine of NZ. John went above and beyond to ensure I had a full and enjoyable VIP experience, and also drove me and my partner back to our home base, which saved us a long trip on the train. I highly recommend Capital Personalised Tours and will certainly book other tours with them in the future. Thank you so very much John!Written 19 July 2024
- BL10090 contributionsExcellent day in and around Wellington - thank you Selwyn! We did a private full-day LOTR tour, to include a visit to Wētā Workshop (separate review for that, also recommended). We were fortunate to have Selwyn as our guide for the day and really appreciate his in depth knowledge of the city and surroundings - especially where and how to avoid traffic! He was able to squeeze in a couple additional stops, and helped us get some outstanding photos at each location. For lunch, his choice of the Chocolate Fish was perfect. Food was great, and it’s a very fun local spot - that also had a good story. We visited a number of filming locations before and after the Wētā tour. Selwyn also provided a great recommendation for dinner near our hotel, as well as an all important post dinner ice cream stop. We had a lovely day in all respects and we are very happy to have been connected with Capital Personalised Tours and with Selwyn.Written 3 May 2024
- 195jodil0 contributionsAwesome day in Wellington (LOTR Tour)We had a wonderful day in Wellington. Our guide, Steve, was excellent and showed us around the LOTR film sites, giving us ample time for photos and to look around. Steve was very informative and we had great discussions about New Zealand and more. We had a lovely lunch at Chocolate Fish, tour at WETA workshop, and driving tour around Wellington. Would highly recommend the private tour!Written 21 March 2024
- veeferreira20240 contributionsFantastic personalised tourI booked this one quite quickly and did not actually understand just how personalised it was going to be! Coming off a ship with 4500 other passengers I assumed we'd be picked up in a bus and taken around but no, me and my two friends were surprised and delighted to learn this trip was just for the three of us! We were picked up by Kelvin and driven around Wellington to see the sights and it was marvellous. We booked a LoTR sights tour but because we weren't THAT much into the movies we made good time on those stops and as such Kelvin used the spare time to show us some of the other beautiful places around Wellington. It was great to be driven around and told about the culture and history and other bits of trivia. We were taken out for lunch (included) to a wonderful fish restaurant and taken back to the ship in good time. Lots of thanks to Kelvin! We had a great time in Wellington and thoroughly enjoyed your company.Written 12 March 2024
- Ray F0 contributionsAwesome TourSteve was an amazing guide. Very knowledgeable, very accommodating and very friendly. He made the tour enjoyable, and very special, and was so easy to talk to. I was very impressed with the whole process. From booking the tour to prompt replies to my queries, and for providing such a great service. We both had an awesome day and will certainly be recommending you.Written 6 March 2024
- Mark C0 contributionsA most memorable day outA great small group (just the two of us) wine tour where I met a very interesting wine lover and had Andrew as our driver, tour guide, local historian and advisor. He was brilliant in creating a relaxed experience and a friendly atmosphere. We tried a few wineries and had a wonderful meal included. The staff at the wineries were all well versed in their products and made us welcome. Not a cheap tour but worth every cent to have it personalised.Written 1 March 2024

What a fantastic day out. John was such a great guide, while we often visit Martinborough we still learnt new things thanks to John's local knowledge.
John is a great guy and obviously knows the vineyards and the people which resulted in a very personalized and very special tour. John was great company and delivered a great tour visiting the best vineyards in Martinbourgh and lunch at Poppy's which was just great, with great wine, food and the staff were knowledgeable and friendly. All the vineyards visited provided us with great wines to taste and were very knowledgeable of their wines , resulting in a great day out.
Thanks John!!!!

As a mountain bike guide myself and my partner a wine guide, it was so nice to spend a day as a customer. We know what is expected of a guide and John fully exceeded our expectations.
From start to finish John catered to all of our requests, and more.
It was a terrible rainy day, but Johns vehicle was modern, warm and very comfortable.
He is very polite, knowledgeable of the area and also the wines. Every winery we visited was perfect for our tastes and he even managed to get us a booking at a Ata Rangi wines at our request without a booking which was a great surprise.
I felt the price was very reasonable considering the time John spent with us throughout the day, money very well spent.
We cannot recommend his tours enough, 5 stars easy.
Thanks John and look forward to seeing you down our way sometime so we can return the favour.

We enjoyed this tour with another couple (very nice Aussie's) guided by Andrew. This trip was way more than expected. Andrew stopped at several Lord of The Rings filming sites including Helm's Deep (a quarry) and provided a LTR tour book to review. We made several scenic overlook stops. Andrew was able to add historical personal references from family history of ANZACs and had a notebook of copies of newspaper clippings relevant to the story. Then we visited three outstanding wineries and ate at Poppie's with a fine charcuterie board including pork belly and our favorite wine choice. We stopped to enjoy a coffee at a local coffee shop and then ventured into an award winning chocolatier that offered samples. The chocolate lemongrass was our favorite. Then on our way back Andrew offered to drive us into Wellington for a quick view of the city and then back to the cruise ship on time. This was a wonderful tour and highly recommended. Kudos to Andrew.

My wife and I are visiting our daughter in Auckland. We have taken a number of wine tours (as well as bird tours) and have always had only the nicest things to say.
We were excited to go on this tour because of the reputation of Martinborough for fine Pinots.
Sadly, this tour disappoints.
First, let me say that Andrew, our guide, was knowledgeable, attentive, funny and a real pleasure. He was the best!
The “Whole Day Tour” fell flat.
The first winery was fine, if a bit ordinary. There were 4 or 5 Pinots to sample (Pinots are the main reason to come to this area). We bought a case and shipped to our daughter in Auckland.
The second winery, Poppies, let us down badly. Not a single Pinot to try. All sold out! Why would the tour company continue to use a place with no Pinots? They knew full well there were no Pinots but kept them on the roster?
If you like white wines and sweet wines, it would be tops. In fairness they actually did have one Pinot (in an impressive presentation wooden box for ~$160 IIRC) which we were allowed a sip.
Lunch there was a lovely cold tray of meats and cheeses and many other things. It was enjoyable but honestly, a cold plate was a bit disappointing on a $181 (USD) per person wine tour.
The last stop was was a winery where the owner was pouring small samples after loudly announcing “5 tastings are $10!”
The tiny tasting room was crowded, not a single place to sit. Literally, no chairs, not just no available chairs, no chairs.
Curt descriptions of the wines along with an hurried atmosphere and I could not get out of there quick enough! It was the worst of the bunch.
So, in summary, we had a great guide but the wineries picked for this high dollar tour were way below par.
This is the first negative review I have ever written but I think folks should know what to expect before spending a fair amount of money for a below par experience.

Thanks for your feedback and we apologise that your wine experience was not what you had expected.
Your Guide, Andrew had informed me that the experience at your 3rd winery was substandard and we have since replaced this winery with another winery for ongoing tours. We are lucky that the overall standard of wineries in the Martinborough region is high so we are confident with the new addition.
We have in the past received glowing reviews on the Poppies lunch platter of local delicacies but appreciate this is not necessarily to everyone's tastes.
regards John

This was the perfect final day in Wellington! Our guide, Andrew, did a wonderful job of navigating some very windy and rainy weather, as well as an unexpected (for us) national holiday...he gave us a lot of great information about Wellington and the Valley on our drive out, and we really enjoyed the winery selections (and were able to even add on a few wine stops of our own at the end!). A definite highlight for me was the lunch stop at Poppie's - we were able to do a wine tasting with Poppy herself, and then enjoyed a really well put together (and filling) charcuterie plate with a full glass (or two, in our case). Really wonderful day, and was so appreciative of Andrew's flexibility with our questions and winery additions! Highly recommend!

John was our wonderful tour guide for the day with a wealth of local knowledge we set of promptly at 9.30 am and enjoyed our very relaxed and informative drive to Martinborough. We love wine so we where in for a treat at the vineyards we visited, we loved that John was obviously well known so we got to have a chat with all of the lovely local growers/owners of the vineyards. The tastings where lovely and informative and I must say we left each vineyard with a bottle or two. Poppies we had our lunch with a sensational platter and a lovely glass of wine and time spent with the lovely Poppie and Shane what a wonderful couple with an outstanding boutique vineyard/Winery. A big shout out to Miles at Moy Hall Wines, we had a few laughs with him while he was hosting our tasting FUNNY AS. Lastly this trip with John was well worth the money, we both had a fab day out. Thanks Again John for an amazing day out.

Thank you John for a great day out, showing us around your lovely waipara region and along the lovely scenic coast, as well as a stroll around the beautiful Greytown, through Martinborough, Featherston and Ngaw fishing village . We so enjoyed the Fish n Chips at the Lake Ferry Hotel, then on to the seal colony which you were able to take us up really close to view them in their natural habitat. On to Cape Palliser Lighthouse to work off our lunch up the 254 steps to the magnificent views, oh WOW!
Fantastic day! John was very knowledgeable and informative, showing us other little point of interests along the way. We would highly recommend .

Tom picked us up promptly from our cruise ship in Wellington and delivered us back safely with time to spare. In between we had a great day, visiting Kaitoke Regional Park and C'est Cheese on the way to Maryinborough. Once there we sampled lovely wines at Palliser Estate, Schuberts, Te Kairanga and Poppies. At Poppies we had a wonderful luch platter with dietary requirements perfectly catered for. All in all, a great day.

If we choose not to go to the last winery but go to Greytown instead, how much time do we have in Greytown before being picked up?
