About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- RoadWarrier999990 contributionsA nice rideTook the car ferry south to north and enjoyed the fairly smooth embarkation and disembarkation...as much as we could being in a queue of hundreds of vehicles! On board, the seats were comfortable, the food reasonably priced and the views terrific. We took our rental vehicle onboard, bur it would also be easy to drop at one side, walk on and pick up a rental on the arrival side. Good service and great scenery.Written 3 August 2024
- cordovachick0 contributionsCalled the Most Scenic Ferry Journey in the WorldWe booked passage for two (2) seniors on the Kaitaki Ferry from Picton (South Island) to Wellington (North Island) with an upgrade to the Queen Charlotte Lounge at a total cost of $224.93 NZD ($164.93 ferry cost plus $60.00 for Lounge access). Check-in was easy, but the terminal's air conditioning was not working that day, so it was extremely hot while we were waiting to board the ferry. Called one of the most scenic ferry journeys in the world, the Cook Strait ferry crossing is 96 kilometers (52 nautical miles) and takes around three and a half hours. The Queen Charlotte Lounge is located on the Deck 7, towards the front of the ferry and an adults-only space (18 years and older) with comfortable leather recliners. As part of the lounge entry, we received a $15 each food and beverage voucher to use at any of Kaitaki's cafés and bars. Everything was wonderful, except a person in the Queen Charlotte was consistently coughing and was not wearing a mask. We had to move seats, so we didn't have to listen to it.Written 23 July 2024
- BeppieChick0 contributionsGreat experience on the KAITAKI ferryThis trip was excellent - have never taken notice of which ferry we took before, but now that we have had a great experience, we will definitely be choosing the KAITAKI ferry again. It must have had an upgrade because it was in great condition, nice choices of places to sit, more room than we've experienced before, warm and cosy. The staff were friendly, the food choice was ample for the short trip, price not too bad, good place to sit and play cards or read, comfy chairs. The sea was reasonably calm for this trip (not that we should rate this trip due to weather) and it left and arrived in the time stated on the ticket.Written 15 July 2024
- KiwiLynda150 contributionsReview of journey and the Premium Lounge on KaitakiWe decided to treat ourselves to the Premium Lounge during the ferry crossings on a recent sojourn to the South Island. It wasn’t cheap, but we thought it was worth every cent. We were on the Kaitaki for both crossings. We parked very close to the passenger entry, as I have limited mobility. The staff were so helpful, both at check-in and driving onboard the ship. The staff onboard were very friendly and professional. The food was nice and it was a very relaxing way to spend the three and a half hours journeys There were only about 15 of us in the big lounge each way, it was great. We had a morning sailing Wellington to Picton, and an afternoon sailing Picton to Wellington. We are very glad we paid the extra for the peace and tranquillity. The seating is very comfortable and you have a small table in front of you for meals, spreading stuff out, etc. I would definitely pay the extra $$ to use the Premium Lounge next time we cross Cook Strait.Written 20 May 2024
- Buzk0 contributionsExcellent trip. The staff on the Aratere could not be faulted. Friendly, helpful and professional. Great scones available for only $5 and clean and comfortable seating areas. Thank you.Written 26 April 2024
- Road554370776630 contributionsSuch a great experienceWOW!!! What a service! Very organised/ on time & helpful. Accessing the terminal is very easy & clear signs everywhere. We got ourselves there early & lined our car up. Once the cars were about to board, our hire cars battery decided to die. We had fast service from the team who jump started our car & got us on the ferry. The lounge areas/ the food / viewing decks were all amazing. Such a beautiful boat trip - which didn’t feel long at all. Once we had to get into our cars, staff checked on us again to make sure our car started. We had such a great experience - thank you.Written 18 April 2024
- Sparcs070 contributionsIncredible ferry journey, taking in some of the best views of New Zealand.Picton is one of the prettiest ferry ports in the world, and this added to well run ferry creates an amazing journey. These ferries offer good food, drink seating and run a very smooth sea trip. This journey can be bumping where the Tasman sea hits the pacific, but 90% of the time it’s calm and stunning .Written 4 April 2024
- zg640 contributionsFerrying to CapitalEasy transportation from Picton to Wellington. Plenty of seating and cafe for light fare. Beautiful views but it does get quite cold and windy, so it’s impossible to stay on the outer deck for too long. Checking and claiming bags was a breeze, but you do need to make sure your bag is 50 lbs and under, otherwise a fee will be required. Free transportation to the Wellington train station is provided upon arrival.Written 15 March 2024
- 501nilsa0 contributionsBeautiful way to start the exploration of the Southern IslandGreat views from the ferry and worth the money to take the trip. At least one way. There are airports in Blenheim and Queenstown so I would recomend taking the ferry going south and fly out/back from the Southern Island.Written 15 March 2024
- mtU4121FC0 contributionsRead my review, you will save time and a lot of money! Honest review, make backup plans!!!We had a 2 week holiday in new zealand. The tickets we bought like about 2 1/2 weeks before arriving. From Wellington to Picton, everything was good so far and the ferry was on time. After 1 beautiful week at the south island, we arrived at picton for the check-in to wellington. There the hole joke from interislander is going to get started.... So they said.... sorry but your ticked got canceled (Ticket was issued for the 12th of March), because your ferry is broken (technical issue). We are not able to serve you until the 16th of march. I asked if this is a bad joke! Sadley no... Then they said, go to the other company (bluebridge) and buy a new ticket, maybe they can bring you and your car more quicker to wellington. Then we asked there... same thing, no tickets until 16th of march. On nearly all questions about what is going to happen with all the booked hotels, the overstay of our rental car, our flight back to europe (flight is on the 15th, so no way we could reacht it), they said.... yeah, sorry we cannot do anything for you. And also the cost, you have to buy everything and give it to your travel insurance (haha best joke ever), they "interislander" are to serve us and they have to find a solution for all of the lost bookings, overstay of the rental car, new flight ect.... They gave us a card, where we can call someone at interislander and ask there for a refund, but they told us at first only a refund is possible for the shipping ticket and all other cost, are at first on your own.... if you get it refunded, no one knows. All together, cost are about 1500 to 3000€ only because they canceled our ticket, and the worst thing, nobody told us anything per e-mail or telephone before. We recogniced it directly at the shelter, where they told us the news. So for all guest who will have a flight ticket shorty after your ferry ticket from the other island, i would devinitely recommend it to you, to have backup plans in mind. I, in a 100 years would not believe if anybody hade told me, that this horror of a situation can happen to you, so keep that in mind. Later i talked to many many loclas in all over the island. They told me, that this horrific situation, that the ferry brakes down and travelers stranded and lost their flights and everything else, happens since 3 years, many many times!!! The prices are about 250 to 450 NZ-Dollars per Car including 2 persons. So for a short trip on the ferry (3hrs 30min) still a lot of money.Written 12 March 2024
- V9313GTmelaniet0 contributionsStunning views in the SoundsIt was very windy the day we went Wellington to Picton! You couldn't go outside as you would have been blown awayy! Inside the ship was fine, a bit rocky but that was to be expected. Very quick to get on and off with a vehicleWritten 6 March 2024
- HahnTravels0 contributionsMade ItArrived by car earlier than our scheduled departure time only to find late comers go on first. Almost last to get car on and then second last car off. So arrive late - less hassle! Crossing was OK, windy day but good scenery. Had a cabin, very old and needs refurbish. Left and arrived basically on time so I suppose that was a win according to some other reviews. Ferry out of use by date I reckon. Wouldn't do it again.Written 5 March 2024
- Graham M0 contributionsPremium lounge highly recommendedBe prepared for a 400 metre walk followed by a lot of stairs to get on the ship, but if you head for the Premium Lounge, you will not be disappointed. Staff are very pleasant and helpful. A great selection of drinks and snacks. Buffet lunch is simple but good. The three and a half hours passed so quickly.Written 4 March 2024
- Explorer8104790 contributionspremium loungeWe booked into the premium lounge on the 1 March 7.30am kaiarahi sailing out of Picton. Can’t say enough great things about the two stewards on duty in this lounge Friendly and helpful. Thank you so muchWritten 2 March 2024
- PiningForTheFjords0 contributionsAnother great crossingI’ve always felt well looked after on the Interislander, I’ve had multiple trips on it and my last trip was no exception, always comfortable and enjoyable if it’s a calm crossing but even the rough crossings aren’t too bad. Food on board is quite good but also quite expensive so would suggest you eat before hand or take some snacks on board. If you feel like being pampered spend the extra $89 and use the lounge which includes food and comfortable seatingWritten 26 February 2024

We booked the 9.00 am ferry and to ensure we got on early arrived at 7.30 am number 55 in the queue. We ended up as one of last on the boat and when we finally got on most of the seats had been taken. What is the point of giving a queue number and then to ignore it?
Food on the boat appears to be designed for hungry lorry drivers. Coffee was excellent but not much else. The outside weather was cold, about 6 degrees but his was not excuse for her boat itself to be soo cold inside.
They need more orderly loading procedure, more variety of food and proper heating

We took the 2am ferry in January Wellington to Picton and the 6pm back in February. Most on the 2am passengers slept and since there weren't many aboard, we were able to find couches to spread out on and get some sleep.
Two adults and one van - no issues with our van. We were lucky enough to cruise when the water was calm and enjoyed the trip. We slept most of the way there, but on the way back, we enjoyed some food and hot drinks.
You get a decent discount on the ferry and items purchased on board with a Top Ten membership.
Helpful, friendly staff.

We booked our ferry tickets online for our campervan after doing thorough research for the morning ferry and arrived at the ferry queue just over an hour before departure for check-in as instructed on the ticket. No issues and as we waited for the ferry to get ready we enjoyed the sunrise.
Instructions were clear at check-in, that we hang the explosive-canister tag on our campervan and vacate once we have parked in the ferry and enter the lounge/restaurant floors of the ferry. Private rooms can be rented or premium lounges are also additional costs.
The free section includes two main floors with the bottom floor consisting of café, buffet restaurant and gift shop. Access to the outside of the ferry are also located on this floor. The next level up is the quiet section with mainly individual lounge chairs for napping or relaxing.
Journey can be smooth or rough depending on the swell and weather as ferry companies will cancel voyages if the seas get to rough.
Disembarkation at Picton was smooth as campervans were almost the last ones to get loaded, they are also the first few to disembark.

I went up to Picton on the Coastal Pacific train on the 16th of February and back to Christchurch again on the 23rd of February. The scenery was awesome especially along the Kaikoura Coast. I spent most of the trip on the outdoor viewing carriage. Train was 15 minutes early into Picton and also 15 minutes early into Christchurch last Sunday. I highly recommend going on the train. They are getting rid of the Tar Barrel tunnel north of Kaikoura. Saw five seals on the rocks at Ohau Point. Food in the Cafeteria carriage was delicious.

Was booked on the 5pm Wellington to Picton Sailing which was delayed by a couple of hours. Staff at the main gate informed me on arrival and I discovered an email advising me of same, it was a pity to miss the sailing during daylight sailing but was still a pleasant trip.
I had a 7.4m long Motorhome, the staff and crew were very helpful and there was plenty of room to manoeuvre it into position.
I paid the extra $35 and had access to the "Plus Lounge" which included an open bar, dinner and snacks and some very comfortable seating. I would book the extra next time, I had a look at the Bedrooms which were available for $40 that included a couple of beds, a bathroom and a desk and they looked good value if you had been driving and needed the sleep.
Excellent service, the ship was clean and well run. Great trip.
A mask wasn't mandatory but was recommended.

Kia Ora,
Thanks for taking the time to provide your feedback.
We are sorry to hear your sailing was delayed and you missed the communications about this. We agree upgrading to the plus lounge, there really is no better way to travel across the Cook Strait. Enjoy some all-inclusive drinks and food whilst you sit back and relax! Our cabins on Kaitaki are also a great option if you need a rest or a private space.
Thanks again for travelling with Interislander and we hope to see you again one day!

Once again, our trip across Cook Strait on the Kaitaki was effortless, extremely pleasant and totally wonderful.
The money spent using the Premium Lounge was worth every cent and we were well looked after by efficient and very happy staff.
We'll be doing it again in a couple of weeks and are in no doubt that our experience on board will be just as enjoyable.

I felt the staff cared about each passenger as individuals. Communication throughout our very long crossing (13 hours or thereabouts) was excellent, staff were all so helpful, nothing was too much trouble during the journey. I applaud them all. Loads of passengers were vomiting due to rough seas, the staff were excellent in re-assuring people, clearing up quickly, efficiently.
Catering was excellent, the food kept coming, hot fresh scones jam and cream, fish and chips, sandwiches, mac n cheese, even lasagne, all hot and looked delicious.
At around 01.00, hot buttered toast was my whim, and they made it for me! I can't tell you just how grateful i was, even a choice of white or brown bread!
It turned what could have been a nightmare journey into a sociable friendly and bearable time for all - we borrowed an iphone charger, people chatted, the atmosphere was really good, no complaints or moans and groans, an excellent crossing helped by excellent staff

We are really glad to hear you felt so well looked after during what was a rare occurrence and unfortunate weather disruption. Your comments are so kindly and gratefully received by the team who always work hard to make sure our passengers are comfortable.

Due to COIVD my trip was cancelled. I can not fault Interislander but I struggle to see why they associate themselves with a useless, dodgy and impossible to contact travel insurance partner. Chubb refuse to give refunds that people are entitled to and after a phone call which seemed productive and multiple emails they are now ignoring all contact.
Interislander do yourself a favour and chose a different insurance partner that actually has some moral compass and ethics.
I look forward to attempting the journey again but DO NOT add the insurance. Absolute waste of money.

Interislander notified us of cancellation 2 hours before departure, NOT due to the poor weather but due to staff shortages, we had turned up 2 hours prior to our departure to check in and were told to turn around and wait for communication from the company. I spent 1 hour and 40 minutes waiting on the phone to be told there was no availability until March, over 2 weeks after our original crossing, basically wrecking our holiday of a lifetime due to company mismanagement. This has cost us financially and travelling with a wheelchair user much stress and frustration

Kia ora,
Thanks for leaving a review.
I am so sorry to hear you were affected by this. Unfortunately, we need minimum crew numbers to sail and in an unforeseen circumstance where multiple staff are unwell, we are unable to sail. We understand this is highly unfortunate and frustrating to customers, however, we must abide by Maritime NZ laws.
Furthermore, I am sorry we could not accommodate you on an alternative sailing at that point in time. We were one ship down during peak peak season and we were incredibly limited for passenger space to move people into.
I hope you did manage to get onto another sailing or find an alternative travel arrangement.
Kind regards and thanks,
Karen

Kaitaki: we booked the Queen Charlotte Lounge on the way down which was comfy and came with discounted food passes ($15 each). Ship was full of people and young families, so the 18+ lounge was very relaxing. Also used our Nautical Miles for priority Onboarding with our car and we were third off the ship in Picton. Nice ship; tidy and food, staff friendly, while not flash, was pretty good. BIG shout out to the Contact Centre and Nautical Miles people who were absolutely brilliant north times I needed their assistance.

Thank you for your great review on Interislander.
Queen Charlotte Lounge is such a fantastic way to travel on Kaitaki! Being adults only and including a food and beverage voucher makes it a comfortable way to travel.
I will ensure to also pass your lovely feedback onto the teams who you had a great experience with.
Kind regards and thanks,

Yes!! Once you have booked your tickets for the ferry you can go to the shop on the ferry to purchase tickets to sit in the lounge/bar if there is availability. Have not been in their as we have always had children with us when we have travelled.

If I have luggage can that be checked in on the ferry and transferred onto the train to Christchurch or do I have to keep it with me at all times. (2 large cases!)

Hy there,
Sorry not being able to answer your question. Why don‘t you contact the Ferry company directly. Have a wonderful trip anyway.

Does anyone have an opinion regarding take the car or not on this ferry. I am curious about the logistics and total elapsed time consumed of car vs. passenger. The wisdom is you can’t take a rental car on the ferry. The fact is you can if you use a NZ rather than
an international company. But the line ups! The logistics of getting from the rental drop - off spot to the terminal ( while carrying luggage) picking a rental service that has a drop off area near InterIsland or BlueBridge terminals. A logical puzzle, Non? F

We dropped off at the Wellington terminal and picked up at Picton. It took us about 5 minutes to hand the vehicle in and walk next door to the ferry terminal cafe. In Picton the hire vehicles are another 5 minutes walk across the terminal car park.
Much better to sit on board with a coffee while others queue to stow their cars. Check the hire car relocation fee and compare it to the cost of the ferry ticket for your vehicle. Add in the value of finding an awesome seat on board before all those car people catch up!
