The trails are self-guided walks ranging between 30 and 60 minutes and suitable for people with a low level of fitness. These trails combine views of native ferns, edible plants and eerie glimpses of our unique geothermal landscape, including colourful steaming lakes and thermal pools that you can only view at Whakarewarewa. You will definitely find a most memorable photo-snap opportunity for your social media profile! The Whaka Geothermal Trails will be an ongoing reserve development as we open new areas to be discovered. PLEASE NOTE: The times set for this self-guided tour are the last entry times, you may enter anytime from 9am through to 4pm.

      A Must See
Booked a tour of this living village and must say that we had an exceptional experience. Our tour guide was passionate and very informative, telling us many stories from the past and enlightening us of the Maori culture. Walking around the village and seeing how close the geothermal activity impacted the people that lived here in the past and still does today was a bit of a shock. The 45 people currently living in the village still use the communal areas including the baths. We were fortunate to see the Pohutu Geyser going off. This was definitely a highlight of our time spent in Rotorua and would recommend it as a must do.

      Living Maori Village
We got the combo tour as we wanted to have a walk around the lakes. Guided tour with a knowledgeable local person who explained to us the insights of the village. You will taste some thermal boiled corn and a bonus free view of the geyser, which is not on the premises of the village, but you can get a free view. If you do the tour between 10 am and 1 pm, you can enjoy a free show including traditional maori dance and haka.

      Insight into Māori culture
A fantastic insight into Māori culture and specifically into the lives of those living around the hot springs. I would really recommend the guided tour. It was well done with lots of information on the village’s past and present. Everyone was really friendly and welcoming. I especially loved the cultural performance. It was so well done with lots of information at the start on what you were going to see and the history of it all. Performers were fantastic with beautiful voices. Definitely a highlight of our NZ trip. A must for those wanting to learn more about the people and culture of the country

      Great day out
We really enjoyed our visit to the living Maori village which included a guided tour and a cultural performance. It was a great day out and we learned alot about the thermal areas and how they've been used for centuries.

A great experience of a living village
We did the all day pass, so we had access to the guided village tour, the cultural performance and the self guided thermal trails. This was such an amazing experience. We kept waffling between the Whakarewarewa Living Māori Village and the Te Puia Cultural Center and ended up choosing Whakarewarewa and absolutely loved every minute. There is something about this being an active living area (around 20 families live here now) and have been guiding visitors for over 200 years through the area. Our tour guide is a descendant and was very informative of the area, the culture and the history. I encourage you to visit. I spent about 3 hours doing all three activities. The cultural performance is about 30 minutes and was fun to watch. The thermal trail was a great walk and glad I did it.

      Amazing experience!
Sheng and Manawa looked after us and were both helpful and friendly! We loved our Mauri village tour so much. It was one of the favourite parts of our trip! It was great to learn about Mauri culture and try some of their food.

A very interesting and informative tour.
Our guide was very knowledgeable but also easy to hear and included some humour. We enjoyed the tour very much, learning about the Mauri way of life.

      Loved it
This was a short glimpse into the performance side of the maori culture! With a conch shell, a karanga (woman whaling), a waiata, and also rakau sticks (a game with sticks), the haka, poi etc!!

      Love this village tour
Absolutely amazing tour Tour guide was very informative and passionate about her culture, ancestors and land. As new zealanders knowing basic things about the culture it was worth the visit to learn a bit more. There were gift shops throughout the village, and you could also see the pohutu geyser at neighbouring te puia! The locals were awesome and welcoming The kids dive for coins from the bridge and were happy to show you how easy it was for them!

      Great Learning Opportunity
This was a great tour. Our guide grew up and still lived in the village, so he was able to provide historical information and some personal stories. He was very knowledgeable and open with sharing. I especially appreciated the geographical points. For example, he spoke of impacts seen around the world (e.g., volcano eruptions, etc.) after a change had been noticed in some of the pools within the village (e.g., lower water levels, higher temperatures, etc.). It was fascinating to see how the planet is so connected using modern examples. He took his time and pointed out some very interesting small highlights that we would have otherwise missed. I believe that the tour is scheduled for an hour, but we went a bit over. I definitely recommend visiting this village when in Rotorua.

      Definitely more than worth it
The guide was very knowledgeable and shared so much history and culture with our tour group. Our group was very respectful and quiet. We enjoyed sweet corn cooked in the spring. We enjoyed the mud flats and thermal area after. What a unique area.

After experiencing many other geothermal type walks in Rotorua we were somewhat disappointed with this one. We found the most interesting views were right at the end of the trail and until that point it was not very exciting. You cannot see the Pohutu Geyser on this self guided tour. The guided tour of Whakarewarewa Village appears to show you it though and I would recommend doing a guided tour of the village as a more interesting and valuable alternative. For the geothermal self guided walk alone, the price is quite hefty, at $30 per adult, but we were able to book discounted tickets through BookMe.

Loved that we could spend as much time as we likes- 1hr 30 min was ideal. A beautiful experience. I wish the self guided map on paper matched the posted maps for reference. Very good descriptions of the uses for the pools. It was somewhat discouraging to some of the thermal pools full of trash.
I am not sure the tour was worth what we paid for each person, but am hoping it goes to supporting the Maori Community.

After picking up our tickets, we approached the entrance to the Maori Village. The initial scene was quite ethereal with lots of steam venting continuously as we walked from the Memorial Archway, over the bridge and past the Wharepuni. After clearing the village, we walked the entire geothermal trail passing by a couple of lakes, mudpools and ended up on a hill with multiple lookout views. The map we picked up in the ticketing office did not match all the highlighted stops on the actual trail so it got a bit confusing what exactly we were seeing. In addition, while the gravel travel was in good condition some of the benches and fences could stand to be repaired. Overall opinion from the family that there was nothing that unique or exciting to see. Kuirau Park would have sufficed for our exposure to the geothermal activity in Rotorua and much cheaper.

Whakarewarewa has long been a favourite place for me to visit but I have to say this time I found it disappointing. I got the $30 self-guided tour, which I was surprised to discover didn't included access to the village or the main geothermal area. The only way to see this area now is through the $40 guided tour. And, ok, I appreciate that this is a place where people live and they may no longer want random tourists traipsing around their streets, but the self-guided tour felt like a disappointing alternative. Yeah, it was a pleasant walk and I saw the steam lakes that I'd never visited before, but it felt overpriced. Perhaps Whakarewarewa needs a revamp to really highlight what makes it unique and not just another Rotorua tourist attraction.

The self-guided geothermal pool tour takes you around some geothermal pools. They’re interesting but there are lots of other places in the area where you can walk around geothermal pools for free. The map they give you is all messed up, with places given the wrong numbers on the map, more than one place given the same number placard, etc. You can also see the geyser (partly hidden behind a tree) maybe around 800 meters away from the end of the trail if you don’t want to pay the additional admission for the guided village tour that takes you to it. Kinda cool but not sure it was worth the price of admission.

Awesome experience. Active geothermal exhibits. Lovely walks that take you to different parts of the village. Experience how people lived in the past with history. Can see the geysers of Te Puia from here. Amazing gift shops selling intricately made and unique souvenirs. Guided tours are available as well as performances that you can watch.

Highly recommend a visit. It's a beautiful intimate walk where you get to encounter the surroundings close up. The walk along the walkway engulfed by the steam was an amazing experience. Also, to visit the little Maori community was intriguing because it was like stepping back in time. Well worth the visit.

I wouldn't recommend anyone waste their time doing the self guided tour. There was no information sign posted anywhere along the way so didn't learn anything about history or geography of the area. For what you actually get to see you'd be better off visiting Kuirau Park where it's free to see geothermal activity.

The self guided was great as we could take our time enjoying the geothermal sights. Well worth the price too.

The car park can fill up so you may need to wait for a spot to free up.
