About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Guide208254802230 contributionsThe most unpleasant experienceI experienced the worst customer service ever. I booked and paid for two people to have a private spa. Unfortunately I ended up going on my own, I was told that it was policy that as a single person I couldn't use the private spa. Very confused at this stance I asked to speak with someone. That is when the stropiest, rudest young woman crossed my path. The distribe she delivered including her swearing was nothing short of atrocious! I was left shaken by the experience. I will never visit again. What was supposed to a quiet relaxing soak at the end of the day, turned into a confronting and unpleasant interaction. AVOID THIS SPA AT ALL COSTS.Written 11 February 2025

- chambjj0 contributionsAmazing and extremely relaxingWe had a Romantic Double Dipper (Pavilion & Sky View Private Pool). The whole experience was amazing and extremely relaxing from start to finish. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and our fruit juice was delicious. Maybe the Changing Rooms could do with a little refurbishment, but this is only a minor point, and overall we couldn’t recommend it more!Written 6 February 2025
- BarbaraKYC0 contributionsGood but could be betterEverything was fine, front desk’s staffs were great and friendly. Until the Indian lady at the cafe who just has a slight attitude. Redeemed my drink vouchers that came with my tickets. She doesn’t handle me the drinks, which is fine. But she put them on the top counter and expect me to reach, when she had them so far away from the out side. I am super tall or have model’s large arms. She did it with the first drink and I said I can’t reach, thought she would at least try harder as push the second drinks as close as possible. And the answer is no. Totally a mood killerWritten 5 February 2025

- jeffreyhG6258LL0 contributionsWonderful relaxation breakOur visit here was the highlight of any relaxation activity we did on our trip. After many days of touring and exploring, we spent the morning at the spas. The selection of pools was wonderful. The facility is very clean, quiet, relaxing. The staff are very friendly and professional. I added on a massage option that was excellent as well. Very experienced therapist and a perfect way to add to any relaxation from the hot spools. We did have lunch in the cafe and it was very nice as well.Written 2 February 2025
- Stubbenz0 contributionsWonderful, relaxing experience, though really quite expensiveThe pavilion pools were wonderful and incredibly relaxing. We went just before sunset and it was magical - I definitely recommend visiting at that time. The only downside is the price. At very close to $100 for two people and a locker, it's just too expensive for me to wholeheartedly recommend.Written 1 February 2025

- Paradise041986657670 contributionsTotal relaxationA lovely relaxing place with a variety of pools to experience. Surreal to be lounging in an outdoor pool with such an amazing view. We were able to get some drinks for poolside to help us cool down, rather that than the cold plunge shower! The changing facilities were ok but it would have been nice to have had some volcanic cleansing products to use in the showers.Written 17 January 2025

- RumiG0 contributionsA must experience when in RotoruaWe had an amazing time enjoying hot mineral water outside on the lake shore. - Freedom663729250540 contributionsSky view private spa; Looks can be deceiving - disgustingThe views were nice as it was very private. But the experience was not great. The pool was disgusting. There is no way that anyone cleans that between guests. It looked nice to start with but once we got in it stirred up the water and then there was stray hairs and dead skin floating everywhere. There is a difference between loose minerals and dead skin cells. It grossed me out so so bad. I got a UTI from this experience. And this is supposed to be a serene and quiet private bath experience. But there were kids screaming and running up and down the hallway and children in the baths on either side of us. It was far from quiet. We paid $70 to escape our kids for this private spa. Only to listen to other people's kids screaming and bath in the most filthy thing I've ever seen. I wouldn't waste my money coming back and I wouldn't recommend this sky view bath to anyone. Photos are of what it looked like before we got in. Looks great doesn't it?Written 1 January 2025

We had an incredible memorable experience relaxing in multiple geothermal alkaline and acidic pools at different temperatures overlooking the magnificent lake. It was pouring rain and being in the warm/hot water outdoors with the falling rain was an unforgettable experience. My two sons - 22 and 17 years - absolutely loved it, as did I. We sat, relaxed and chatted. We’ve been to the “Blue Lagoon” in Iceland but this was so intimate and unique we preferred it. Don’t forget to have the ice cream before you leave - it’s yummy especially after you’ve been in the thermal pools. Book the Polynesian Spa. It’s fabulous and you will feel so refreshed, relaxed and sleepy when you come out you’ll just want to curl up and take a nap. It and the Māori Village were the two highlights of our Rotorua visit!

Thank you for your feedback. The mineral pools are very therapeutic and the best sleep is had after a nighttime visit. Agreed, the gelato is next level good!

Staff at reception and in the cafe were really friendly and helpful and made us feel right at home, they explained the beef it’s of the different pools available to bath in. Really clean changing rooms with free lockers and complementary towels. Showers had really nice soaps, shampoos and conditioners. The pools themselves were very relaxing, very scenic and peaceful location and for the busy season it didn’t feel busy at all. Plenty of shaded areas in the pools and drinking fountains so you don’t overheat. Sun loungers were geothermally heated and were so relaxing I fell asleep. Overall would thoroughly recommend if you’re in need of some relaxation with a beautiful view.

The day we booked for our time at the Polynesian Spa was raining. I read that rain enhances the experience of being in the thermal springs. I would have to agree. We thoroughly enjoyed being in the Priest (acidic) & Rachel (alkaline) springs while looking out at the lake with its incredible wildlife. There is information posted about the different pools, and they are very well maintained. There is a plunge pool for those so inclined. I got as far as my chest each time I tried! (Maybe I was supposed to actually plunge!) The heated loungers were such a treat! So relaxing! I have been to thermal spas in other parts of the world, but the Polynesian Spa is hands down my favourite (so far)!

Thank you so much for your fantastic review! We’re thrilled to hear that your time at the Polynesian Spa was your best thermal spring experience ever. There’s something truly special about the combination of rain and hot springs, and we're glad you enjoyed the unique atmosphere. The heated recliners are definitely a treat for relaxation, and we’re happy they added to your experience. We hope to welcome you back for another unforgettable visit!

1. The spa is way too bright at night. I had read that it would be lovely to soak in the tubs at night and look at the stars, but it’s really too brightly lit for that. I know that the spa requires a certain amount of lighting to make sure that nobody falls getting in and out of the pools, but they could light up the footpaths without making it as bright as it is. it really diminished the nighttime experience to have so many bright lights. Perhaps somebody fell once and there was an issue and so they started really lighting it up? I know that there’s some older clientele there. I would love for them to consider lighting the footpaths and the areas around the tubs only so that people can get in and out without making it so bright that the lights are annoying. (See photos).
2. We were met with a lot of rudeness by one person on the staff. We purchased the package that allows you to go into both the Pavilion Pools and the Lakeside Pools areas, and we would spend a couple of hours in one area and then go to the other area. We preferred the area that was much less crowded, but we wanted to see what the other pools were like. In order to go back-and-forth, you have to cross through the lobby, and we also went to get a smoothie which was included in our package. We peeked into the family pool area because it was on the way to the smoothie and the lifeguard there was very upset with us. He asked what we thought we were doing, and I told him we were just looking at the family area. And I commented that the slide looked fun, and he was very rude and said we weren’t allowed in the area and certainly couldn’t go down the slide and made us feel like we weren’t going to kidnap children or something. Later, we saw him rushing around and having a conflict with another patron. Hd made us feel like we were doing something wrong when we were just on our way to get a smoothie and looked into the family area.
3. The last reason for a three star review instead of a five star review is that… speaking of kids…one of the areas was supposed to be child-free, and it was not. A family came in with two little kids, probably about a year and a half and three years old, and they started screaming; where was the grumpy lifeguard then? It would’ve been nice if he was around to get the children out of the adults-only area if he was so concerned with us not being in the family area. We finally just left, because it was about time to go anyway, but the grumpy lifeguard and the bright lights left a bad impression. And, keep in mind that I have enjoyed a lot of spas around the world, and although the setting here is lovely and the front desk people were wonderful, and they had a couple of nice cold plunges, I really felt that these other elements detracted from our stay. It was hard to relax with the kids and the bright lights.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. While we’re pleased you enjoyed aspects of your visit, such as our setting, front desk team, and cold plunge pool, we’re sorry to hear that other elements impacted your overall experience.
Lighting in the Pools at Night:
Safety is our top priority, and adequate lighting is essential to ensure all guests can safely enter, exit, and navigate the pools and pathways. While we understand that brighter lighting may affect the ambiance, we believe it is necessary to maintain a safe environment for all patrons. We hope you were still able to enjoy the natural beauty of our geothermal setting.
Interaction with Staff in the Family Pool Area:
We apologize for any discomfort caused by your interaction with our staff member. The family pool area is reserved exclusively for families and guests who have paid and choose to visit this area. The slide is specifically designed for small children. While our team works hard to uphold these guidelines, it’s never our intention to make anyone feel unwelcome. We’ll review this situation to ensure all guest interactions are handled with the utmost courtesy and professionalism.
Children in the Deluxe Lake Spa:
We’d like to clarify that our Pavilion Pools are reserved for guests aged 12 years and older, and this policy was upheld during your visit. The Deluxe Lake Spa, however, is family-friendly, and children are welcome in this area. This is communicated in our materials, but we apologize if this was unclear. Our lifeguards are on duty to ensure all Poolsafe protocols are followed and to assist guests as needed.
Your feedback is incredibly valuable to us, and we are committed to making each guest’s visit as enjoyable as possible. Should you wish to discuss your experience further, please feel free to contact us directly at dutymanager@polynesianspa.co.nz.
Thank you again for your thoughtful input, and we hope to welcome you back in the future for a more relaxing and seamless experience.

Experienced the 60 min massage with lunch and private bathing. Was an incredible experience starting off with a 1 hour soak prior to the massage, ending off with a private bath after in the lake view rooms.
Access to the geothermal pools continued after the massage experience for the rest of the day.
The experience was well worth the price

I purchased a spa package - 60 min mud wrap massage which also included time to bathe in the deluxe lake spa for approx. 40 mins before my booking. This is pretty good value considering the entry price for. The treatment was lovely and the pools were great. They are open to all ages so it can get a bit noisy if there are kids around - if you want more quiet/ privacy then I suggest booking the private pools. The décor in the facilities is a bit outdated and could do with a refresh. Overall a great experience and would recommend to anyone visiting Rotorua!

Views were great and very serene atmosphere - such a beautiful experience coupled with a facial which was excellent (the Timeless facial). The only thing I’d recommend is that those of us who didn’t book a spa treatment weren’t given a short tour which explained what each spa pool was good for e.g. skin, hair, nails etc. so oerhaps there could be additional signs which provided these which seems more practical than providing the short tour for all guests? Changing rooms were clean and tidy too.
The facial was also amazing but the only thing I would’ve liked is for them to check the preferred pressure as it was a bit too strong on my arms personally.

Thank you for the review and suggestions. We will certainly let our therapy team know about the feedback. It is usually asked of guests what their preferred pressure level is.
We are considering signage that explains the benefits of each geothermal water type for guests instead of simply naming the kind of water alone and the temperature, while being mindful of too many signs cluttering the pools and gardens.

If you can afford the extra few dollars, I recommend the Deluxe Lake Spas, rather than the Pavillon Baths. The atmosphere appears more natural - with the pools being shaped with rocks, and native plants. The pools also overlook Lake Rotorua. With the deluxe spa you also get access to complimentary towels, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and body moisturiser in the changing room.

We stayed at the Deluxe Spa due to the beautiful pictures. Buying tickets at the counter is quick and easy.
However, the entire plant has become significantly old. The showers and changing rooms were very basic and quite wet or dirty due to the busy operation.
The pools are really nice and invite you to relax. However, everything is much smaller than thought and as I said, here too you can see the ravages of time.
A visit to the other areas, e.g. when it felt too loud for us, is unfortunately not possible.
Conclusion: Certainly suitable for relaxing, but with smears.

Thank you for your review. We truly appreciate your feedback.
We want to assure you that regular maintenance is carried out by our dedicated teams. In September of last year, the deluxe lake spa was temporarily closed for upgrades, including the installation of new gardens and pathways connecting the changing rooms, lounge area, and pools. Our spa is located on a heritage site, one of the oldest in New Zealand, and it holds significant historical value to the region.
As our pools are part of a geothermal environment on Sulphur Bay, it’s natural for them to accumulate mineral deposits, particularly calcium and magnesium, over time. These deposits are a result of the geothermal waters, which contribute to the unique experience we offer.
Regarding access to other areas, please note that the private pools and additional spaces are available for separate purchase, which is clearly communicated on both your ticket and at reception. The deluxe area you visited features five pools, including four alkaline pools, one acidic pool, and a cold plunge pool, all designed for your enjoyment.
Our cleaning team works diligently to maintain the bathrooms and other facilities, and during peak periods like January, we roster additional staff to assist with higher demand. With a large number of visitors, particularly international guests, it’s inevitable that wet conditions can occur in high-traffic areas.
We also apologize if the recliners were occupied during your visit. These geothermally heated recliners are a popular feature and tend to fill up quickly. We will be adding more signage to ensure it’s clear that they cannot be reserved while guests are bathing.
Thank you once again for your review, and we hope to welcome you back some time in the future.

A great place to go and relax. It was waking distance from our hotel so my wife and I decided to treat ourselves before dinner. I thought we were only going to spend an hour or so but we ended up staying more than 3 hours. There were over 5 different pools and they all had a clear view our the lake. They all had a different touch and feel. Most pools were only about 2-3 feet deep. Not enough to swim but enough to sit back and relax. The weather was perfect mixed with the warm and sometimes hot water with a cool breeze. There was also a cold tub to cool off but beware because it was quite cold given that we've been sitting in warm/hot water for hours. The shower area was clean and they had shampoo and conditioner for your convenient. They also provided towels and a locker for your belonging.
Overall, it's a great place to get some r & r at a reasonable price with a great view.
