        Good experience.
It was a good experience. Our guide gave us some history and explanations of some Māori customs. We were treated to a convivial family show of dancing along with the inevitable haka. There's a good opportunity to see lots of hot pools, mud pools etc. And for those who dare, the hāngī meal was very good.

Local guide was knowledgeable and courteous. Be amazed at how this indigenous tribe has thrived at their historic site amidst all the geothermal features. Don’t forget to taste their hangi lunch nicely smoked by geothermal energy with the sweet organic juices from the meat all nicely retained.

        Meaningful tour with knowledgeable guide
Tour brought us around a living maori village. Got to learnt about history of village, see geothermal activity and its use in the village. There is sweet corn cooked by the bubbling pools. The explanation on the meaning of the carvings and buildings within the village was clear.

The living Maori village at Whakarewarewa was an unforgettable experience.
The combination of geothermal activity and cultural history created such a unique atmosphere. Watching the geysers erupt and hearing about how the land is used by the local people was both educational and inspiring. Kerosene Creek was a hidden gem—the warm water was so soothing after walking around all day. A truly enriching and relaxing day!

        Immersive Maori Village Experience!
This is a working thermal Maori Village with 70 residents. It’s fascinating! They cooked corn on the cob in a geyser for us to eat and we learned so much about the Maori history and culture. If we had more time, we would have done the tour that included a traditional Hangi dinner in the evening. Our fascinating guide, Daniel, shared his stories, culture, and history with us in a compelling and interesting way. Highly recommend!

        Badly planned tourist trap
A really good example of bad planning and over pricing! The natural mud and hot pools are great to see, but the city has been built far too close up to it. From every point you see houses and even a very ugly multi-story hotel. Entrance fees are ridiculous for such a gift of mother nature. If you want to see the geysers and the mud pools and hot pools, it will cost you 72 NZD. That for a short trail around gifts of mother nature. The track is not even that well maintained. Numbers on the map do not match the numbers on of the sights of the track. The entrance building where you have to buy the tickets is far over the top on luxury, while the toilets are dirty and falling apart. This is a shameful tourist trap. New Zealand, you can do better and should do!

Learn about and Support Maori Culture
This is a very special experience. Guiding is a centuries old tradition passed down through generations in this Iwi. Kylie was a thoughtful and hospitable guide, who truly gave us a warm welcome into her home. You will learn how the community thrives in the geothermal conditions of the land around them, making use of the land and water to cook, bathe, and heal. The cultural performance was so amazing, I was overwhelmed with how lucky I was to experience it. I cannot reccomend this experience enough as a proper way to learn about and support Maori culture.

        Amazing place, Amazing people
Worth the drive. Lovely, welcoming Maori people who have been giving tours to their village for over 100 years! Saw the geyser go off, learned a lot about Maori culture. Short hike to see more hot springs. Guide cooked corn on the cob in a spring for us to taste- yum! Nice gift shop with locally designed products. Excellent performance of traditional song/dance/haka. Can't recommend this enough! GO!

If you are in Rotorua and have any interest in Maori history and culture, this is a wonderful tour to take. It is called a “living village” because it is a functioning Maori community which was explained in great detail with both humour and gravity by our illustrious guide, “Chief”.

The guided tour, which takes about an hour, walks you through the life of the village, including bathing, cooking, schooling, the Meeting House and the cemetery. Questions are welcomed and “Chief” farewelled us with a rendition of the traditional Maori love song Pokarekare Ana.

We then attended a cultural show which included the always-stirring Haka, Poi dancing and more information about traditions and a different version of Pokarekare Ana. I’m sure not every Maori has a good voice but it certainly seems that way!

Afterwards you are free to wander the village and visit the various hot springs and mud pools which are very active. The smell of sulphur is distinct but not overpowering. You can purchase sweetcorn which has been cooked in a hot pool (wrap in muslin, drop in pool and in 8 minutes you have cooked corn!) and I can tell you, it is delicious!

I would recommend everyone put Whakarewarewa on their list.

We learned a lot about Maori culture and their way of life at this attraction. I was impressed that the tour was conducted by one of the residents and the stage show was also performed by villagers. We saw how the village uses the hot springs for cooking and bathing, and how flax is used for clothing and decorations. There are also some enjoyable easy walking trails around the village. I recommend arriving as early as possible, before the large tour groups arrive.

High praise to the tour guide Michael, really informative and interesting tour kept light and interesting with great anecdotes and jokes. Really interesting to see how the community have used the thermal springs and hot pools in everyday life, both back in time when the village was established and how it is still used today.

This place really got two birds with one stone, hot pools, geysers, and Maori culture experience.

Hangi meal was great after a couple of weeks away from Britain - good replacement for a Sunday roast! Very easy process, just said booking name at counter, and was seated with meal in front of us within 5 minutes.

Booked on-line and found check-in quick and easy. Our guide was very informative and managed to mix teaching with humour effortlessly. He imparted lots of Moari facts to us that we did not know so learnt quite a lot. The 30 minute entertainment by the local Moari tribe was also very good but could have benefited by being longer. We elected to have the traditional "Hangi" meal which tasted delicious.
After the morning's activities in the village we went on an unaccompanied walk-about through the geothermal region of the village which turned out to be a photographers dream with so many sights to record.
All in all it was a truly wonderful day out and definitely well worth putting on your places to visit in Rotorua

Some of the prominent building is Whare Tipuna (ancestral meeting house), where it commemorating the Treaty of Waitangi between Maori and European settlers.

The theme of this tour was of geo thermal activity and how the Maoris live around this. A lot of emphasis was on the geo thermal activity, the various pools, bathing pool, and the washing pool and cooking ones. The commentary was funny, entertaining and informative.
A Maori from the village was talking about it and giving live examples. The area was hot and had the sulphur smell of the area.
We ate the hangipie lunch, it had a salad, the pastry stuffed with potatoes and Kumara and a pie. Being only a fish and eggs eating person, I had to choose the vegetarian option, boiled corn was given with every meal.
The Maori, dance drama was fun, most of the participants were very confident, speaking and explaining in English about the dance and the rituals in the dance. The love song and pine for each other was enacted well.
A good surprise after the Maori experience was an offer to the redwood tree walk.
This was beautiful and an enriching experience. The tree walk is built on a height helping us to be in a sort of canopy of the giant trees. There was enough information on each leg of the walk. This was a beautiful journey, and one realises how massive and tall these trees are. We could get good glimpses of a few birds as well.
Rotorua, has two good lakes, where many people reside around these lakes, there was a lot of activity, people on the shore, surfing, swimming, building sand castles, surrounded by lovely houses.
We then were dropped at the Rotorua info centre to board the bus back to Auckland.

Kia ora, Sounds like you had an enjoyable day with us, our guided tours are very informative. Our guides, who all whakapapa back to Whakarewarewa Village, are related to the guides who guided at the Pink and White Terraces. They are knowledgeable, informative, fun and do love sharing stories of the past, so it is good to hear that you connected well with your guide. Educating our visitors is an important part of ensuring that the Māori history, culture and everyday life is preserved for future generations. We endeavour to do this with our guides telling of their legacy, as well as through our cultural performance group conveying this through waiata (song) and dance. Thank you for your awesome review and we hope to see you again sometime soon. Ngā mihi, Whakarewarewa Team

Spent a really interesting and enjoyable afternoon here. We were glad we chose this living village rather than the government run made-for-tourists village (Te Puia) next door. Whakarewarewa is owned and operated by residents and this is evident from the start. Our guide, Hannah, was entertaining and engaging and seemed to be related in some way or other to everyone we came across during our tour. The show was good and felt authentic and we loved the sweetcorn cooked in the hot spring. After the show we wandered freely around the village and surrounding steaming ponds. A great way to experience Maori village life and get close to some of the natural wonders of New Zealand.

The one show you must see when you are in Rotorua. The guide is very knowledgeable and friendly and he will walk you through the village, telling you all the interesting and essential bits about life in the village. The walk is easy and insightful, plenty of chance for you to interact and learn from the guide. After the tour, there is a cultural show performed by the tribe. You are free to explore the village or sample the Hangi pie and corn cooked with thermal heating. Definitely worth it, complete your New Zealand holiday with this tour.

Loved this village. People who live here and run it are direct descendants of the ancestors who founded the village. The areas you are shown are actually used by the village to cook and bathe. The cultural show is one of the best I’ve seen and fun. The Aunty who introduces the show is wonderful. Various shops are around to get products and to be shown how things are made. You can get a meal cooked by the thermal pools and the cooked sweet corn snack was tasty. Remember this is actually where these people live, so money spent goes back into community. Geysers put on a show
