About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Camulodofan0 contributionsWonderful fun way to see the beautiful lakes.Great tour with an entertaining guide. A scenic route and splash down in three beautiful lakes. Loved the story behind our Duck Matilda.Written 4 February 2025
- up2ular0 contributionsSound quality is bad. Barely heard anythingWe did this years ago before Covid. It was a better experience in memory. Maybe it was down to the duck whistle thing is no longer available, or the guide commentary wasn’t as fun and clear as before. The speaker quality was poor that you barely heard anything. It ruined a big part of experience as this is heavily guide driven. I saw the company’s feedback for this issue is this is part of experience because the vehicle is old and loud. But this is never a good excuse if the visitors can’t hear anything. They should have done better.Written 10 January 2025
- jeanetskk20230 contributionsGreat tripTrevor is the best guide. He told us so many interesting things on the way, he has a great humor and the places we went were great. He Even made the rainbow come our for us 😉 I can only recommend this tours. Good value for money!Written 3 January 2025
- Getaway564749047160 contributionsNot worth it.Really disappointed with the experience. Extremely noisy bus. I wouldn't recommend it. Way too expensive and not worth the time.Written 1 January 2025
- Camper333583026440 contributionsGreat experience, definitely worth doing! Our tour guides Rileigh and Matt were wonderful. Rileigh was fantastic, she told us of all the local history and stories of the people. Her knowledge and information was fantastic and really brought the island and scenery to life. Matt’s driving was very comfortable and you felt at ease and safe the whole time. This is a fantastic experience and definitely makes you feel jealous not to be able to live in this beautiful place! Definitely an attraction worth seeing and doing!Written 15 December 2024

- Shanelle880 contributionsExcellent family activityWe are locals and it was our first trip on the duck. It was very informative and fun. The kids loved it. Thanks very much for a great afternoon :)Written 20 October 2024
- Connector527005768420 contributionsBeautiful and great storytellingEsther was an amazing guide, loved the fact that she's Maori and really tried hard to make sure the stories were accurate. My partner and three kids loved it and they all Whakapapa to Te Arawa so it was awesome confirmation and learnings for themWritten 14 August 2024
- kelsey9990 contributionsSightseeing and entertainmentThe duck tour was very entertaining, the guide Esther was fantastic, she had fun jokes along the way and told great stories interpreting the area around us. It’s beautiful scenery of course but the guide is really what makes the scene come to life. Highly recommend being driven around on the duck, it’s a nice mix of a boat ride and transportation without any fuss. Amazing option for backpackers that don’t have a vehicle to get out and see the lakes!Written 5 August 2024
- 12KatrinaM0 contributionsGreat, unique fun experience - highly recommend! We had an excellent afternoon out with our host/driver Alex exploring the stunning Lakes of Rotorua. As a local Kiwi I had not explored this area before and was blown away by the beauty, both on the land and the water. Our two children loved the trip and we all found it informative and entertaining. While in July we did not get cold and had the windows up/open the entire trip. I highly recommend for a fun family outing, away from the busy tourist attractions.Written 15 July 2024
- Scenic203709703190 contributionsA great experience - had lots of funWow this exceeded our expectations. It was so entertaining. Ether (our guide) was super funny and managed to keep us and children entertained throughout the tour.Written 13 July 2024
- BrendaB36410 contributionsThe kids loved itThe tour was great, Alex was fabulous and deserves a pay-rise 😊 the kids loved it. Its really cold in the wintertime though, especially at the end of the day; so rug up warm (I thought I read there were heaters and blankets onboard now, but there were neither).Written 11 July 2024

The female driver had a very dry sense of humour which added to the enjoyment of this tour.
We learnt about the use of these ducks during WW 2 as well as seeing some amazing scenery during our ride on the lakes. For a tour that takes 90-105 minutes I think that it was value for money.

Impulse booking but well worth it. We did the longer tour which included going into 3 lakes. It was very enjoyable and Matt the driver (2 hours) and guide did a great job keeping us informed about the lakes and surrounding area and some of the history. He also had some good banter to get everyone laughing.

This was such an entertaining and interesting experience. Full of information about the area, our driver Está was funny and informative but also a very professional driver with safety as a high priority. Going from road to water was strangely exciting and even the Australian Coots on the water knew instinctively to just get out of the way.

This is an experience that is both informative and fun for all ages. We had nonstop stories, banter and a string of Christmas cracker jokes throughout our journey around the city and lakes of Rotorua. Our Irish driver and guide did a marvellous job of engaging his passengers while simultaneously wrestling the 1945 gearbox on our amphibious vehicle.
These wartime innovative truck/boats were designed to last only a few months in service, not the 80 years that ours had lasted.
The weather held off for half of our trip, but when it did set in, we were all under cover and enjoyed our “splashdown” into the lake without getting wet.
You’ll return from your trip better informed about local cultural stories, some colonial history, an awareness of some local environmental issues and a smile on your dial.
Turn back the clock and truly experience this unique 1945 style of transport for 90 minutes while riding high in this breathing and snorting piece of authentic history.

This is by far the best thing we have done in years . Heaps of fun and laughter right from the get go . Our guide Ollie was fantastic full of local knowledge and made the whole adventure fantastic for all family members. My youngest granddaughter is now convinced there is a shark and crocodile 🐊 in the lake . And that will provide us with lots of laughs for future get togethers lol . Highly recommend this not only to tourists but to locals as well 10/10

We saw this advertised and looked at the reviews and decided to go for it. We weren’t disappointed either. We had Duck 1 with Matt as our driver/guide/comedian who made the trip so interesting and amusing with his wicked sense of humour, brilliant. It’s not often you get to go in one of these WW11 landing craft and drive through the city then into 2 lakes head first. It was worth every dollar. Well done Matt you are a star, not forgetting Matilda of course (Duck 1)

It was a very informative and wonderful experience. Esther our driver and guide was vey humorous and engaging and was a very safe and good operator.
The lake visits (2 for us) were well worthwhile and I gained a good insight into the area on this tour from the commentary.
It was an experience to travel in the old WW2 vehicle and take warm clothing if it is likely to be a windy day as you can be exposed to the weather. It does have clears you can roll down though but the experience is better with them up in my opinion.

We were recommended to do this tour by someone we met in a supermarket in The Coramandel Peninsula and it certainly lived up to our expectations. We had booked a morning tour but we were asked if we would mind being upgraded to the longer afternoon tour as we were the only 2 people booked for the morning. We happily agreed to join the 4 other passengers in the afternoon for the Lakes tour. Esther was our driver and guide and she was excellent and managed to give an informative and amusing commentary. It was really helpful to have done this tour on our arrival in Rotarua because Esther was able to explain so much about the geography, the history and the people who live and have lived in the area. She was extremely knowledgeable and entertaining. We thoroughly recommend the tour.

We took a tour with josh. The city tour with two lakes. Josh made this tour extremely fun and also interesting at the same time. Playing the titanic theme tune as we entered the lake was absolutely perfect.
My only gripe was I wish the city part of the tour was slightly longer covering more areas other than just round the museum area and Lake Rotorua.
This trip was booked on bookme along with the an add on to the Polynesian spa which made it a great deal.
Thanks for a great tour.

This activity sounded fun and a bit different. Our guide and driver talked for most of the trip and was very informative. We visited 3 lakes and were told the story behind each lake and a bit of natural history. I thought the information on the efforts to protect the lakes very interesting too.
The scenery is beautiful and I really enjoyed the vehicle too. It is one of only 1,000 still in existence and a remarkable piece of engineering and an important historical vehicle. It was an honour to ride in a machine that took part in one of the defining events of the 20th century.
It is not cheap at $50 each but you are unlikely to find anything similar anywhere else. I would recommend it.
