- fussbunny0 contributionsCruisy Kayak Weekend With The RivergodsThe guided tour on Canning River was a great experience for all ages. The kids are paired up with an adult on the way down to our destination picnic area. On our return trip, the kids are more confident to sit with each other, while mum and dad get to enjoy a romantic cruise along the river. The guide was very friendly and informative. Showing us and naming all the river birds that passes us by. Got to see the wildlife that we used to see only on TV or internet. No prior kayaking skills required. The guide will give you a quick course on how to paddle and maneuver. Life vest also provided. Great activity with the kids all season.Written 2 August 2023

- Ant_Safari0 contributionsUpsettingIncredibly disappointing experience. I booked the kayak hire at Shoalwater Bay to go with my young daughter. We drove over an hour to get to the meeting place to find that the address provided was wrong. When we finally got to the right place the operator was unhappy because he had brought a kayak and life jackets for adults only. I told him there is nowhere in the booking to enter the ages of participants to which he replied there most certainly is. Even today, there still is not. He said I should’ve booked direct, but still today bookings are accepted through Adrenaline. The pictures on Adrenaline show younger children so I expected this information wasn’t critical. We changed the kayak to a smaller one, but he was so disorganised he didn’t even have spare children’s life jackets. He put her in an adult’s life jacket, did it up tight and said it would be fine. We went to the water and I made a silly mistake when jumping on the kayak and we tipped over. The water was very calm and it wasn’t a big deal but the operator came along and said he was cancelling the hire. I think he was concerned about his liability if something went wrong and he had put a child in an adults life jacket. Still, his manner was quite rude, never accepting any responsibility for the wrong address, unspecifiable ages or incorrect life jackets. The person running the experience was disorganised and rude. A refund was given for the experience but nothing to compensate for the day or petrol that was wasted.Written 9 April 2023
- janecS394NK0 contributionsGreat birdwatching experienceWonderful solo tour with Carl the guide as I happened to be the only person who’d booked for a tour that day. Carl was very knowledgeable on the natural environment and the European history of that part of the river and although I live in Perth and grew up near the Canning River I learnt a lot. We were lucky enough to see most of the resident bird species on and above the river, including the elusive Spoonbill. Highly recommended.Written 8 April 2023
- Sirroneilyk0 contributionsAmazing experience!Fantastic experience! I highly recommend Rivergods and would definitely tour with them again. Very professional and well organised, catering for those (me) with zero experience kayaking. Saw the beautiful sea lions and penguins up close and enjoyed a lovely healthy picnic lunch on the island, followed by a swim/snorkel in the ocean.Written 23 February 2023
- andyschendel0 contributionsBest way to see penguin islandThis is a great way to enjoy penguin island. Pick up on time and then a trip on the kayaks to sea the sea lions . It’s amazing how close you get . We then headed to penguin island and had a informational tour of everything we saw. Penguin feeding was great and the lunch was much needed after a busy morning. Snorkelling and sunbathing completed our time before we headed back to shore. Shout out for Karl and his help during the trip . Recommended.Written 8 February 2023
- moh65750 contributionsFun, fun, funWe (3) arranged an independent hire of 1 DBL and 1 SGL sea kayaks to use at Shoalwater Marine Park. Tom was excellent with taking the telephone booking and payment for next day hire, and very accommodating. All immediately confirmed with an email confirmation. Great price and so much fun. The next morning 0845, we met the van and guide to help receive our kayaks off the trailer. After a how to and area brief, we were off. The day of hire we had very clam water, with little swell and light off shore winds. The water is very clear and we enjoyed paddling around the islands, seeing the wildlife and snorkeling at the rear of Penguin island. Even had a friendly seal come bounding over to our kayak to say hello. Amazing! Return at 1400 was very easy. We were back before the tour group, and as we were physically capable, we loaded the equipment back onto the trailer, and confirmed to Tom with a quick call. Really liked the choice of guided tour or independent hire, as we like to do our own thing at our own pace. Rivergods made it all very easy. I would highly recommend the experience to anyone visiting the area. Plenty of space in stowage for lunch, water, sunblock, camera, snorkel gear, shoes etc.Written 21 January 2023

Great guide, Carl. Knowing a lot about animals and nature. The sea lions didn’t want to swim when we paddled near and no dolphins were showing themselves, but if was even though a great day. Most surprising were the huge amount of Pelicans. A lot of other birds were also spotted.
Only bad thing was when waiting at the meeting place I was called up and informed the guide was a bit late (good to be informed), 10-15 minutes, but he didn’t turn up until at least 40 minutes later. Would have been better having that time at the Penguin Island.

Thanks for your review, sorry about the delay that day, we also prefer kayaking etc to being stuck on the freeway but if we are to pick clients up in the city that is the risk we must take . That day there were a couple of epic traffic jams he got caught in, that is why the delay was longer than we thought it would be. Thanks for coming and come back soon - if you like birds try our Canning River tour.

If spending two hours loading and unloading kayaks to and from the beach, and enduring passive aggressive monologues from guide Tom is your thing then this is the trip for you.
If not, I suggest you hire kayaks and paddle across to Seal and Penguin Islands yourself. This is easily done and a far preferable way to enjoy the stunning environment.

Thanks Ed,
We reached a similar conclusion - that it would have been better if you had hired . .or arranged a private trip. I am sure our dear readers can work out that some people will have more fun in a hire setting than a group setting, and hopefully know themselves well enough to choose wisely. We are happy to get people out there paddling either way which is why we offer both hires and tours. It is wishful thinking to imagine moving the kayaks is any different in either situation by the way.

The pick-up service in Perth is great and the guide was very nice. We got a drybag to put the clothes and snorkel/masks were available which unfortunately is not stated in the tour description so we organised it ourselves without needing it then. The tour itself was nice. But nothing special. It felt as the guide was quite in a hurry to get to the pinguin island. We almost spent no time with the sea lions even though on pinguin island we had a very calm programm with lots of free time that I would rather have spent in the kayak around seal island or along the coast of penguin island insted of hanging around on penguin island. I personally would not do the tour again but rather rent kayaks and paddle to the islands on my own. There wasn't much added value from having a guide. (Sometimes I saw the guide talking. But our kayak was too far away to understand what she had said. Just at seal island there was one short information about the animals for everyone.) Lunch was a self-made sandwich which was nice. Coffee would have been a great add-on. In total we paddles maybe about 50 min (30 min until penguin island and 20 min straight back). The rest of the time was spent on the island.

We had a fabulous trip paddling, snorkeling and exploring the islands. Carl our guide was extremely competent and informative. We learnt a lot about the seals, bird life and penguins. We enjoyed a picnic lunch on the lawns overlooking the coast while making friends with the skinks. My interstate visitors loved the experience and I would recommend this highly as a great outing.

Excellent from start to a very novel finish. There were six people plus Tom on our trip and none of us were greatly experienced but, apart from clocking up extra distance on the water trying to figure out how the rudder controls worked, the kayaking was relatively easy. You do need to be able to help out unloading and loading of the kayaks but the doubles have four handles so not too hard with four people.
Lunch, a very informative walk around Penguin Island and a relaxed but professional guide make this a fantastic experience.
Probably best to have to have some paddling experience but eminently doable for young and old (I'm in the old category)
Lastly, connecting the four kayaks together and using the lunch tablecloth tied to two oars to enable us to sail "back to Australia" was epic and highly recommended.

What a great day! My sister and I were lucky enough to be the only ones on the tour and we had a great time! Paddling out to Seal Island and the on to Penguin Island. Just 2 older ladies and our wonderful guide. The day was clear but windy so there was a little “chop” on the bay but the kayaks are very stable.
After arriving on Penguin Island we had morning tea, watched the penguin feeding, walked around the island (amazing bird activity on the island), followed by a lovely lunch. Then it was time for a nice paddle back. We still are smiling from this adventure!

The water around the marine park were very neat and despite being a novice canoeist who is a non- swimmer. Carl was a great guide who helped us kayak around the park to explore the island. We also learnt many interesting facts about the wildlife around the park. Great experience snorkeling and equipment for kayaking too. The morning tea and picnic lunch at the penguin island was also lovely. A great family holiday.

I've been kayaking many times before this. I'm a young, fairly fit female and was pretty confident as we set out. This trip was guided by Tom and a new hire, Ben. The weather was beautiful and the trip over to the islands was easy. Unfortunately the tide was extremely low and because of this, we could not snorkel at penguin Island. Tom was very knowledgeable.
On the way back, I was paired with someone who struggled to steer and therefore so we veered off course in fairly strong winds. I had to flag down Ben to help us get back on track by towing. The group had to help unload and load the kayaks onto the trailer as well as back and forth on the sand to stay on schedule. Perhaps a little more info on the nature of the activity involved would help to filter those who are not physically capable or willing to assist. Perhaps also a couple more minutes spent on how to steer for those in the front of the kayak to assist less capable paddlers if mismatched. Otherwise, good trip!
