About
The white sand beaches, tranquil bays, and nature reserves of Rottnest Island lie just off the coast of Perth. This tour is ideal for independent travelers who want to explore the island at their own pace without the hassle of organizing their own transport. Cruise out to the island by high-speed ferry and enjoy a full day to discover the island. Perhaps hire bikes and cycle the coastal roads, dive in to swim and snorkel at the beaches, or spot quokkas in the nature reserve.

Highlights
  • Free time on Rottnest Island to swim, bike, or snorkel
  • Chance to spot quokkas at the Rottnest Island nature reserve
  • Self-guided tour: explore the island at your own pace
  • Round-trip transport by high-speed ferry from Perth or Fremantle
What to expect
  • Your Rottnest Island ferry departs from either Perth or Fremantle, depending on option selected when booking. If leaving from Perth, you’ll cruise down the Swan River through the city to reach Fremantle, from where it’s about a 25-minute ride across the ocean to "Rotto," as it’s known to locals. When you arrive, you are free to explore the island—and its 63 beaches and 20 bays—however you wish. There are plenty of spots to get wet with a swim, snorkel, stand-up paddleboard or surf, or just relax on the sand and watch yachts bobbing in the water. The most popular activity for visitors is renting a bike on the island to cruise leisurely along the scenic roads, where no cars are allowed. If you’re interested in history, check out sites like Lomas Cottage, Rottnest Island Museum, Pilot Boathouse or the Salt Store and Exhibition Centre. And don’t forget to keep your eyes open for wildlife, particularly the island’s native quokkas. (All entrance fees, activities, rentals, food and drinks are at your own expense.) At the end of your full day on the island, head back to Fremantle or Perth on the return ferry.

Spectacular day trip
A fabulous day out. Thank you to our Perth family for the early Christmas present. We spent a fabulous day cruising out to the island but the best treat was the fabulous lunch at Isola Restaurant. It was amazing. We shared a tasting T-Bone steak with a great rocket salad and a nice glass of wine. Would highly recommend you book so you don’t miss out on this gem.
The bus tour around the island is a must on a warm day and you don’t feel like you have time to walk it after a long lunch.
A wonderful time out.

Big thanks to Malcolm (Mal)
From the time we ran into Mal as we were watching swans on the Swan to the return trip, nothing and no amount of requests for information was too much trouble. His commentary as we sailed down the Swan from Perth was extensive. He even serves at the little cafe on the Express and helped with directions when we ran into him on the island. Mal is a great ambassador for Rottnest Express and is keen to let you know what other adventures you can do with the company. The trip down the Swan was informative and extolled Perth, WA, its geography, people and all its wonders.
We watched in Fremantle as the crew efficiently, quickly and carefully loaded passengers, their bikes and baggage. And unloaded with the same efficiency in Rotto.
The only negative was the dried spray on the windows which made it difficult to take photos from inside when we wanted. And not even easy to see through.
A good day, nevertheless.

The island was beautiful to explore. I suggest you get there the earliest as possible to enjoy it. Everything you need is in the island.

Wasteful ferry ride
Sep. 2021 • Couples
You will spend more time docked in various port in Fremantle and another shed for loading of gear than on water. Exhausted from sitting on the boat for more than 2 hours, losing valuable time, while wasting tíme at ports. I presume this service works also as a supply run. Do not recommend. Would be better if the provider declared the time lost.

Fantastic service
Jun. 2021
A huge thank you to the staff on duty at mid-day yesterday at North Port who very kindly organised a shuttle bus to B Shed for the marathon runners returning from Rottnest.
The runners had parked at B Shed at 5.30am to catch the special ferry to Rottnest but then had to get back to B Shed on their return as the first ferry returned to North Port.
On behalf of all the very tired runners, thank you.
A great service.

Service from Perth to Fremantle
Apr. 2021
My children and I enjoyed our return ferry trip on the Rottnest Express ferry. We took our bikes for an extended weekend and it was a convenient service from Perth Elizabeth Quay. The commentary along the river was interesting. It was a 3 hour journey, which was a chillaxed start to our extended weekend. Good and clean facilities on board. Staff helpful and friendly. Highly recommend.

Captain pugwash loses luggage
Mar. 2021
My wife and I went to Rottnest for a couple of nights and the trip across and the stay at Rottnest were great. However, coming back we were to come back at 2.30 and we were one of the first embarkees on to the ferry. There was an officious employee who told me in no uncertain manner that the small bag I was carrying was not to go on board as they were expecting 150 students and all the adults and other travellers would have to go on the upper deck.

He then took the bag and when I got back to the disembarkation point the bag had not arrived. A trip down to Fremantle the following morning in peak hour traffic was required after the said bag was located.

I am unable to follow the logic as we had carried the bag on as hand luggage from Fremantle and when other passengers got on they had far more hand luggage than the small bag that was lost.

It absolutely wrecked the holiday we had as I had a fairly expensive camera inside the bag.

Hi Andrew, I'm sorry to hear about this experience. As I'm sure you can appreciate, to make the journey comfortable for all passengers when the ferry is rather full, we can't accept hand luggage on the vessel. Rest assured, we take the utmost care with our passengers' luggage and it is returned safely once the passengers have disembarked the ferry.
