      Fantastic day trip from Perth!
The Rottnest Express took us from Perth, through Freemantle for our day trip to Rottnest Island. Beautiful views along the way with narration. We chose the bike hire for our time on the island, taking around 4 hours for the 22 km loop (and maybe a little more with some of the trail off-shoots). Fantastic views of snorkeling bays, limestone formations and unique vegetation, not to mention the many quokkas! The bike ride is not for those who haven’t biked in awhile as some areas are hilly and the wind could be a factor. Bring repellent for the flies. Enjoy a cold beer at Geordie’s Bay General Store picnic tables after at the end of your day!

      Day trip to Rotti
The ferry staff were fabulous until we arrived at Rottnest. The lead on board was incredibly rude when we asked about our hired bikes and snorkels that we prepaid and hired. The snorkel sets were at the far end of the wharf, and the crowd was thick. Not only did we navigate down to the snorkels there were several people waiting for about 15 mins until a staff member came to assist. The bikes were great but we did not get a lock and the obvious thi g happened at our last snorkel spot...our bikes were stole and the 3 km walk back dampened a great day. We had drinks and snacks at the Mezz waiting for our ferry, service was excellent and food delicious. We snorkelled at Matilda Bay and Lorikeet Bay both fun places with plenty to see.

Rottnest Island - Worth the visit!
From start to finish, the service was excellent. The staff from Rottnest Express was helpful. We took the ferry from Barrack Street Jetty and had a commentary of the history of the Swan River. We also included the bike hire on our trip and I would highly recommend doing the bike hire for those who are capable. One of the best way is to take a ride along the island and figuring out yourself where is the best route to take. Bear in mind that there are some tough routes with lots of up hill and down hill rides which can be a bite dangerous if you are not careful. There are food stops at certain stops but would recommend to bring some snacks & water while cycling in case you want to stop by some of the beaches. Don't worry if you forgotten to bring any snacks as there is a grocery shop just at the start of the jetty. Overall, me and my son enjoyed the visit to Rottnest and we did get a selfie with a smiling Quokka. Once again, kudos to the Rottnest Express team. Will defiantly go back again during my next visit to Perth.

Ferry was very comfortable and staff were friendly and helpful. The bike I hired worked well for the cycle round the island.

Not great, but I hope others can save some money…
While I wouldn’t recommend this provider based on my experience, if you are set on using them try “HELLOROTTO15” for 15% off.

A must do if you’re in Perth
We are a family of 4 - Nana, Papa, Mum and 4yo. We did the ferry and bus trip and had an amazing time. The day was quite windy and cloudy - but was still warm enough for a swim in the afternoon.

      Not honest
I booked a round trip premium boat/bus from Perth. Upon check-in I asked if I could return to Fremantle? If so, could I get a refund for the price difference. I was told yes. Upon returning to Fremantle, the agent said we can only give credit. I wrote to the company and was told NO refunds, just credit. So much for standing by your employees. Hence, I suggest taking the SeaLink boat crossing.

The staff were really friendly and tried hard to find and follow the whales. Very informative commentary and commentary on the whales you see. Plenty of shade, plenty of room to move around boat slightly choppy waters

      Awful service
Rottnest Island was fantastic, however Rottnest Express ferries came close to ruining the experience. Despite arriving early for the ferry that we had booked and joining the queue, the queue closed and the ferry left without us. Staff were pretty rude and unhelpful about the situation and we could have been stuck on Rottnest staying in 'emergency accommodation' overnight.

Perfect tour for a visit to Rottnest Island.
Combined the boat trip with the bus tour, as it was slightly raining the best choice. The 90 minutes bus tour brought us to the most important views. The guide was continiously giving us information about the island. So all the expectations were fullfilled.

      A terrific experience
A wonderful day. The bus tour was a great way to learn about the history and natural history of the island. The tour guide was terrific and the views with leaping whale calves incredible. The tour guide was great. And of course the quokkas are so cute. A great way to learn about the island as a preliminary to biking around it.

      Totally unpleasant sweaty experience
Booked this journey to go to Rottness for the day at your peril. The air con the boats lower deck isn’t working and hasn’t been working for a while. Expect a fully clothed sauna and a nauseating experience. No apology, no fans, no windows or doors that open. Complain and you are made to wait, then fobbed off. Good old corporate greed take the money stuff the customer. It’s called maintenance do some. Be warned use this ferry if you have to but don’t expect a pleasant experience.

We purchases their round-trip ferry upgrade from Perth.

The ferry terminal is located right in the Perth CBD and was easy to walk to from anywhere in the CBD or get to using the free Perth CBD public busses.

After boarding, we met individually with Grace because we had purchased the upgrade and she spent a few minutes helping us plan our day on the island.

Grace provided commentary during the majority of the 1.5 hour ferry trip to Rottnest Island and she was extremely friendly, informative, and funny. Truly enjoyed listening to her stories and anecdotes.

We sat outside under a shade and had an enjoyable trip to Rottnest. It was on-time, had a small bar/cafe on the boat for snacks and breakfast, and had a very pleasant trip. We even saw dolphins!

One of the perks of the upgrade is that we get to skip to the front of the line when boarding the ferry. My husband and I told Grace when we got to Rottnest Island that we didn't feel comfortable doing that. So, she offered to meet us at the beginning of the jetty 30 minutes before the scheduled departure time. I am so grateful for that because she walked us to an area under an umbrella right by the entrance to the ferry and we were allowed to wait in the shade. Unfortunately for everyone else, the sun was shining and it was extremely hot and there wasn't any shade on the jetty for the main line.

The upgrade gave us a coupon for a free drink; water, soda, or alcohol, and a small care package. There was live music on the way back to Perth and a small wine/beer tasting from Swan Valley wineries and breweries.

It was an inexpensive and entertaining way to get to Rottnest Island. Highly recommend it.

We recently travelled to Rottnest with our four young children for a weeks holiday. When we arrived to depart in Fremantle we were unsure of the process to load the large amount of luggage, bikes, kayaks, paddles boards and more that we had. When I approached a staff member to ask about this, she came over to our trailer load and assisted in unloading our stuff. Upon returning to Perth, we made an error that caused our kayak and SUP to be left on the jetty in Rotto. Staff were amazing in chasing up the location of these items and made several calls to ensure they were loaded on a later ferry. Will certainly travel Rottnest Express again. Thanks to all the staff that helped make a chaotic journey with 4 young kids such a fabulous experience.

Hi nicholaspiani, Thank you for your review. It is relieving to hear that our staff and crew were able to reunite you with your lost belongings. Unfortunately it does happen occasionally, but we always do our best to track down the missing items and return them to their owner. Our jetty crew are always more than happy to assist passenger's with the loading and unloading of their luggage and freight items, and help direct passenger's to make their journey as seamless as possible. During the peak season, the jetty can become quite congested with passenger's sorting their luggage and bikes, so the jetty hands are there to make this experience less stressful for our guests. Thank you for travelling with Rottnest Express, and we look forward to welcoming you back to the beautiful Rottnest Island again soon. Kind Regards, Lydia

do not buy annual pass $129 for 10 times, you have to pay $19,50 each time landing, which is cost $32.40 each trip, 10 time annual pass is $324.00 not $129. it is misleading. Rottnest express wouldn't offer your refund. I very disappointed it with attitude.

Hi Crawley2021, Unfortunately, the $19.50 lading fee or $25.50 if you are staying for an extended period of time is something that we have no control over. We collect this fee at the time of booking on behalf of the Rottnest Island Authority and it is mandatory that every person who visits the island pays this. I'm sorry that you have found this information to be misleading, however, the fact that the admission fee is payable in addition to your pass is stated in the terms and conditions on our website and the confirmation received upon purchasing your red rider pass.

There were a couple of companies offering the ferry from Freemantle Shed B but we chose the express. Not sure how much you can say about a ferry other than it arrived on time, left pretty much on time and arrived on time. The vessel on the way over was smaller with few facilities and a much smaller outdoor area but the return vessel was larger with a much larger outdoor seating & a snack bar. If this is important to you best check the schedule before travelling. If sitting outdoors, check with the crew whether you are likely to get wet. A couple of people in prime position needed to move inside due to the prevailing winds and rough water, their seats got duly soaked!

This was an interesting experience. Get there a little earlier if you want to sit up too and see the views.

It was pretty expensive so be prepared to be shocked by the cost and also very busy and don’t dare miss your last ferry back or get on the wrong one either!

Rottnest Island itself was a bit of a disappointment. It was absolutely mobbed like Oxford street in London on Christmas Eve on steroids!!

The island if you can get to see it is beautiful but the bus ride taking you round is horrific, stopping to ram folk onto the bus and struggling to let folk off the bus at $25 each to be crammed onto a bus in sweltering heat was not funny.

The driver to be fair tried his best, but just too many folk on the island it sort of the defeats the purpose of the whole eco tourism thing.

We managed to spend a whole hour and a half trying to find a spot on a beach to just enjoy the scenery.

Don’t go during peak season you’ll be thoroughly disappointed, take everything you need and do not forget sun cream and stay hydrated. The food outlets are rammed and expensive $5 for a 1/2litre bottle of water $10 for a tray of fries, although there are water refill stations dotted about they are in constant use and again you’ll need to stand in line to use them.

Be prepared for a long wait in line to get back on the ferry again and do not miss it we watched a couple of folk who missed theirs by literal minutes and it wasn’t funny.

Would I go back, yes when it was quieter and not filled with tourists and screaming kids fed up being dragged around or waiting in line or fed up being stuck on a bus when all they wanted to do was get on a beach, make sandcastles and swim in the beautiful waters.

And yes we did see a Qoukka!

Our Family of 5 made the return crossing from Perth. We purchased the upgrade for express entry but if you arrive early you will miss the queue. To our surprise the upgrade included a gift ( coffee cup, water bottle postcards in a zip case) and vouchers for drinks and snacks which went down very well especially cruising on the way back to Perth with the sun setting with dolphins frolicking about. The big winner was our host on this day (18/09/22) whose commentary regarding the sights and history of the areas from Perth was informative, funny and much appreciated. His Patience to those who refused to stay seated when docking as they tried to be at the front of the departure cue was a lesson in class! Thanks guys for a great trip!

We left from Perth, the cruise up the Swan River to Fremantle was pleasant with a good commentary from Grace. Having done this with another company two days earlier the quality was evident. It was good to get a bit of speed up on the water when the river widened out. The boat got very busy at Fremantle but the crossing from there to Rottnest is only 30minutes. On the return journey the same pattern ensued with a very busy boat to Fremantle but after that quieter. The live music and the wine tasting a pleasant way to pass the time. Only slight criticism was that we had booked the hotel transfer as part of the package. In the morning two buses had done the pickups, but in the evening only one was there. It took 1hr 15minutes to do the drop offs in the Friday night traffic which made the end of the day quite stressful.

Hi MarpleTraveller, Thank you for your review. Our live music and wine tasting is a new addition to the Perth services, so we're very glad to hear you enjoyed it and found it a pleasant end to what I'm sure was a great day on the island. We have two buses operating the morning pick ups as the passenger's need to be at the terminal in time for the ferry departure, which they certainly would not make with only one bus in the morning. We do sympathise that the afternoon drop off is slightly slower due to only using the single bus, but our second bus is already in use in Fremantle for our B-Shed passenger's hotel drop offs. Thank you for providing valuable feedback, and we look forward to welcoming you back soon. Kind Regards, Lydia

We had booked this ferry ahead of our trip to Australia. Unfortunately our flight to Perth was cancelled and we had to rearrange our trip to Rottnest Island. The ferry company were so helpful in reissuing tickets for another day at no charge. The trip from Perth to Rottnest is via Fremantle and they made the trip enjoyable on the return by having music and wine tasting from Fremantle to Perth. The whole trip was run very efficiently and was a great day out.

I visited here in December 2019 on my 3rd visit to Perth. I have family here and they have always recommended a trip to Rottnest however I don’t travel well on boats so I’ve always been hesitant. This time, I decided to give it a go and it’s definitely worth the trip! It’s such a beautiful island. The boat journey from Freemantle isn’t bad, though I did take seasickness tables just in case. It takes about 30 minutes to get there and once you’re on the island, there’s loads to do and see but remember to get water as there’s no water available other than in the built up areas. I spent about 6 hours there in total as I had plans on the evening, however I would recommend spending the full day there in you’d like to see everything. I took the hop on hop off bus which was brilliant with a good commentary and it gave me the opportunity to see most of the island as well as spend some time sunbathing on the beaches. I always took a Quokka walking tour to ensure I got my Quokka selfie. The tour was only 30 minutes but it was very interesting as I got to learn some facts about the animals which I wouldn’t have known if I’d gone looking for them on my own. There’s plenty to do on the island as well as some great restaurants so I would definitely recommend a visit here for the whole family!

Hi VikkiBee, Thank you for your review. It really sounds like you had a fantastic day on the island! Exactly the experience that we strive for every guest to have. The crossing from Fremantle to the island isn't too long, though being open ocean, can sometimes be subject to decent swells. The comfort and safety of our guests and crew is our top priority, so we do recommend taking a sea sickness tablet to any passengers that are prone to motion sickness. Sitting outside in the fresh air can help, and we do keep the air conditioning set to a low temperature, as this can help with sea sickness. Once you leave the main settlement on the island, fresh water is hard to come by. We always advise guests to take plenty of water with them, especially on hot days, as the WA sun is very strong and heat stroke is a savage beast that you do not want to mess with! Thank fully there are plenty of places on the island to sit back and enjoy the views with some scrumptious food and a cold beverage. Don't worry about talking your own food to the island, as you will have multiple choices for lunch, and can even put together your own picnic from the General Store. Thank you for travelling with Rottnest Express, and we look forward to welcoming you back soon for another great day exploring the island. Kind Regards, Lydia

The ferry ride with Rottnest express was very good, the driver was narrating the whole ride telling us about the areas we went past. We departed from Perth but stopped at Fremantle to collect other passengers which unfortunately crowded the ferry as there were no seats available. That’s the only downside.

Arriving at the island it was absolutely gorgeous, weather was perfect starting of October and sun was beaming. We caught the hop on hop off bus which takes you to all the beaches and attractions. You can get off anywhere and hop on anytime you like which is awesome but it does get very crowded which some people may not like, but it’s good for its price. It’s not meant to be luxury its purpose is to get you from one place to another and it did it job.

Every beach is beautiful, definitely recommend little salmon bay and Geordie’s bay as they’re hidden gems.

Overall the experience was amazing and would recommend to everyone :)

Hi, Thank you for your 5-star review and glowing feedback, we are so glad you had such a memorable day on our beautiful island! Firstly, it's great to hear that you enjoyed the Swan River cruise portion of your ferry journey from Perth, we are sorry to hear it was so busy this lovely weather and school holidays have certainly brought the crowds out. Your day on the island sounds simply amazing and we're so glad you got the chance to explore a few of the best beaches! Thank you for choosing to travel with Rottnest Express and we hope to see you again soon. Kind regards, The Rottnest Express Sales Team
