The wildlife out on such an awesome show for us as we saw a pod of around 50 dolphins, sea lions, seals and a sting ray. - Dorito500 contributionsNot to Be Missed from FremantleThis is a supremely well-organized, efficient way to get to the extremely worthwhile Rottnest Island. We met Perthers who come from Perth to take it from Fremantle instead because there are more departures on the Fremantle schedule. The ride is quick and comfortable. (Riders prone to motion sickness may want to sit downstairs, which is closer to the water level and thus smoother.) We chose not to do the bike combo offered by the Express, but that operation looked super-smooth, too. Instead, we took the on-off bus around the island, which gave us plenty of time for swimming, sightseeing and a picnic lunch - all thanks to the Rottnest Ferry ride. The locals warned us just to be back at the dock on time because the well-organized, efficient ferry waits for nobody.Written 26 January 2025
- amanda s0 contributionsA great day outMy granddaughter and I spent the day on Rottnest Island, where we hired bikes from Hillary's Rottnest Ferries and had an amazing time, mainly because we didn't get lost or crash into any quokkas. As it was her first visit, she was excited to see quokkas, cycle around the island, and visit the beautiful beaches, and I was excited to see her not whine at all! The weather was perfect, with a cooler temperature on the island compared to Perth - it was a glorious 28 degrees compared to 35 in Perth, which meant we didn't have to carry around a million water bottles. We found the island to be hilly, extremely clean, and very well signposted; we were extremely impressed that we managed to cover most of it, cycling 14 kilometers and visiting several beaches, including Pinky's Beach and Fay Bay, which was our absolute favorite. We had the best ice cream at the basin, but we did feel like the basin was very busy and very touristy. We also saw many quokkas to our delight. We had lunch at Subway's, always a safe bet! Overall, we had a fantastic day and are already planning to return and stay overnight.Written 25 January 2025

- Andrew F0 contributionsPoor customer service. Employees act like they’re doing the customer a favor.Ugh. We went to the office trailer in person. We had to cancel our Wednesday trip due to personal circumstances, which we did online a few days before the original date At the trailer the employee said they would give us a voucher for Thursday, “ no problem”. So they then gave a voucher for Wednesday not Thursday, which is what we requested ( we didn't notice their error)The interesting thing is they gave is voucher for the Wednesday 9:30 am departure (we were at there office trailer on Wednesday after 9:30). So we show up, Thursday morning for the 9:30 am ferry, we board and arrive without issue. When it was time to depart rottenest, the employee taking tickets refused our entry on to the boat, acknowledging the error made by his associate told us we could wait and be “ stand by”. So I said to him “ an employee of the company made an error and we have to pay the consequences” his response was “ yes” We refused and eventually boarded the ferry. The boat is fine , but customer service is extremely poor. The employees act like their doing tbe customer a favor. There are other optionsWritten 9 January 2025

Ferry over was good with stop at Freemantle, nice commentary, fairly calm but seats very close together in covered area, felt a bit cramped, crew friendly. Rental bikes were very poor, if you are over 50 suggest bus option not bikes. Island fairly flat. Amazed how many people on the island either staying or visiting. Was told some days 4000 bikes. Food options good and reasonable. Plenty of places for picnic or to get away from others. Saw a few quokkas - mainly around food outlets. Return of bikes was poorly organized, not sure of procedure, many just dropped off bikes at jetty and walked away, crew seemed unconcerned. Trip back was long with 2 stops - took 2 hrs. My overall opinion 50/50. I would prob recommend to combine a trip to Freemantle and Rottness Isl together.

We were very lucky to enjoy fine sunny weather given that it was the wettest month of the year. The swells were normal and so our journey could proceed!
The ferry ride was fun, and the staff provided good commentary (but the speakers on the outside deck kept cutting out - please look into this)
On to some small pain points:
The booking process is terrible on smart phones. I initially wanted to book tickets at the sales booth at the pier. But staff suggested I book online to save money. The mobile website is set up in a way where you need to press next at each step of the booking process. But if there is an issue with information on one of the forms, it won't let you proceed to the next step. This is fine except the site doesn't throw up errors or explains this very well. The booth staff had to explain how it works to me (even your own staff agree this is not user friendly on smart phones). It was also ironic as staff could have just as easily put in the booking on their computer themselves, if not for the higher price.
While the journey was scheduled to take 90 minutes from Perth Barack St to Rottnest, I think it took closer to 2 hours as we stopped and took quite a while to load up additional passengers and cargo at Fremantle.
Once we got to Rottnest, it again took a while to get our bikes off the ferry. The staff were getting cargo off the ferry first. I overheard one of the staff saying that the ferry's crane is broken so it was not working at its usual speed. This meant less time for us customers to ride around the island.
My bike was quite rusty, and the bike seat was difficult to adjust due to the rust. The bike tires were also a little low on air. Unfortunately I only realised this after I left the port. Would be better if you refreshed your bike collection.
After a short lunch, we only had about 3 hours of actual riding time on the island, as we had to rush back up to 30 minutes before the ferry departed as explained on our booking. This was to ensure there was time to board and to get a seat on the outside deck. With 3 hours of riding time, we could only explore a small part of the island. If the above issues were fixed, this would have maximised our ride time.

The island itself is well worth the trip. We left from the Barrack St jetty because we specifically wanted to hear the commentary about the Swan River. Unfortunately the sound quality of the speakers was so bad that I, even as an English speaker could only pick up about every 10th word. Maybe the ferry company could invest in headphones like they have in museums where the commentary could be also offered in different languages. However, the staff on the ferry were friendly, helpful and knowledgable. The bikes could do with a good audit and service. I had to return my first bike as the seat kept on swivelling and then the bike I ended up with only had 2 gears out of 3 which meant I had to get off and walk my bike up several hills. The food at the Rottnest Pub was really good and overall I would recommend this experience.

The company that I booked this tour through charged me in US dollars rather than Australian dollars so it cost double the amount anticipated. The website only shows you the currency AFTER the purchase has been made.
I tried to get a refund but the American company would not help, they left me on hold for 7 minutes (international call from Australia) and then hung up on me.
This is dishonest business practice and they should not be allowed to advertise on this website as they are misleading customers and ripping them off.
Do yourself a favour and book directly with one of the rottenest ferry tour companies in Perth and hire a bike and leave out this dishonest American middleman.

Rottnest was great but I was charged the wrong amount via this site when I booked. They have the child age listed as 3-11 but when I picked up the ticket, the child age is actually 4-12. I contacted this site to ask for a refund in the price difference, and I provided proof of the child age on the ticket but they have not processed my refund or replied to me. Save your money and book directly at the ferry counter.

We did a return from Perth, including bike rental. The ferry was on time, information given was very clear and generally the ride was very smooth. They even were on the lookout for dolphins in Swan river. The bikes provided were decent, although the saddle on one of them was a bit loose. Locks and helmets are also provided.

From start to finish, the service was excellent. The staff from Rottnest Express was helpful. We took the ferry from Barrack Street Jetty and had a commentary of the history of the Swan River.
We also included the bike hire on our trip and I would highly recommend doing the bike hire for those who are capable. One of the best way is to take a ride along the island and figuring out yourself where is the best route to take. Bear in mind that there are some tough routes with lots of up hill and down hill rides which can be a bite dangerous if you are not careful.
There are food stops at certain stops but would recommend to bring some snacks & water while cycling in case you want to stop by some of the beaches. Don't worry if you forgotten to bring any snacks as there is a grocery shop just at the start of the jetty.
Overall, me and my son enjoyed the visit to Rottnest and we did get a selfie with a smiling Quokka.
Once again, kudos to the Rottnest Express team. Will defiantly go back again during my next visit to Perth.

I have been planning this trip to Rottnest for 4 yrs. My was so excited, however, once we got off the ferry you are just given a cycle , no information or contact if something goes wrong etc. we planned our cycle ride so we could cycle the whole island, we stopped 20 min from the port for a cuppa at a lovely friendly cafe. We locked the bikes up but when we went back the rusty lock had seazed so the key wouldn’t open the lock, this left the bike unusable, we had no phone number no instructions and were just stuck there. Eventually we asked the lovely lady who owned the shop if she could phone someone, she phoned a different bike company on the island who bikes have an emergency phone number painted on their bikes, they put her in touch with. Our company, who promised they send someone out with another bike within 30 min. We sat in the heat waiting, after 2 hrs it became clear nobody was coming. We had to go back to the helpful lady In the shop and get her to phone again, tbe company told us they sent someone who said nobody was there ( we had not left the bikes once) and they cut the lock off, well clearly they cut Someone else’s lock off!!!!!! They still offered us no solution. In the end the Lady in the shop felt so sorry for us she brought her buggy round put our bikes in the back and took us to the other bike place where they let us leave our useless bike and gave us another for free. This whole experience left us with just 90 min to explore the island and get the bikes back and on the ferry. When we took the loaned bike back we then had to carry the broken bike back to the ferry, as obviously with a broken lock the bike was unrideable, when we handed the bike in we told them we were furious as it had ruined our day, the guy just shrugged and took the bike. Disappointed is an understatement .

The Rottnest Express seems to be one of a small handful of operating ferries between Perth/Fremantle and Rottnest Island. We took the ferry from Perth and it started with a slower boat ride (because of the speed rules while on the Swan River) and good commentary of some of the buildings, homes, etc., that we were passing. Following a short stop in Fremantle to pick up additional passengers, we were off to Rottnest. The one-way trip took about an hour. There was some decent wind during the trip so the waters were a bit rough. We were fine, but there were people who definitely got seasick. I'd suggest motion sickness medicine if you're susceptible.
Upon arrival, they unload a handful of bicycles and you can take a helmet from a bin they have there - and no, they're not santized/washed after every use as we saw the employees just throw the ones we used all day back into the same bin. Either way, the bikes are functional and we didn't have any problems.
Overall, I would definitely recommend some form of transportación to get the most of the island - whether that be a bike, tour bus, or segway. Walking it is not conductive and you'll only find yourself walking a few hundred yards in either direction outside of the small main area. With a bike, you can see much more of it and with a tour bus, even more.
There are a handful of dining options, but all are pretty basic. Good food, but don't expect a lot of options outside burgers, sandwiches, some pizza, and baked goods.
The Quokkas are everywhere around the central part of the island as I'm sure people feed them scraps so they've unfortunately learned that's where to be. Plenty of options there to get your selfie.
I give this five stars because what you see is what you get. Essentially a ferry ride with some basic commentary, a safe ride to/from, and a functioning bike to get around the island. Worth it all.

Pros: Easy booking and seamless logistics. It was nice to purchase the full package of ferry/bike/snorkel in one go for a decent price. Rottnest is also full of beautiful scenery, and of course, cute Quokkas.
Cons: Most of the cons have more to do with the island itself, rather than the Rottnest Express. E.g., hot sun, high UV, and little shade in some parts of the island. We were also constantly harassed by swarms of little annoying flies. We were additionally not particularly impressed with the snorkelling, as much of the landscape seemed over touristed and over impacted. Lastly, the distances on the island to bike sometimes felt like a slog with the hot weather and many little hills.
Bottom line: a great day trip while in Perth, but if you're going in summer, bring the sunscreen, bug spray, and prepare to sweat! :)

Thanks!

You can gear the cycling trips to your needs. There are various ‘suggested’ routes ranging from 1 hour and upwards. There are also plenty of ferry operators who run regular crossings too and fro. I suggest you make your own time table for the day, using the ferry times, giving yourself a little flexibility to ensure you don’t miss any connections. Hope this helps

Hi Amanda
Rottnest has lots of areas to explore and if you plan on riding around on a bike you will find very little shade. I'd go in spring or autumn but it does get very busy in school holidays. We were only there for a day trip on the bikes so I can't comment on the accommodation standards only that it looked quite basic from the outside. But it's a beautiful place!

Has anyone added the optional lunch at Karma Restaurant? We are wondering if the serving time is pre-set, or can you just make your way there when you are ready to eat?

The information states as 'Duration: 8hrs'. When we arrive in the morning, can we leave the island anytime we prefer e.g. 11.30am or 2.30pm?

You'll need to check the timetable online of whoever you want to travel with. We caught the Rottnest Express from the Barrack St Wharf (8.45am) and there was only one departure time from the island (4.30pm). There are however more frequent trips if traveling to / from Fremantle.
