Arrive at Eaglehawk Neck in Tasman National Park, where you will transfer to an open-air cruise ship and set sail around the peninsula’s rugged coast. - helen n0 contributionsSuper tour and well worth it to see the sightsThe boat driver was knowledgeable and helpful. The vessel was comfortable yet exciting and the driver took us closer to the dolphins each time he saw them. The girl helping lauckie ( Jo?) was attentive to seat belts and suggestions about photo opportunities. Of course the scenery was as marvellous.Written 13 February 2025
- Prabsky0 contributionsThe Tasman Cruise was the absolute highlight of our Tasmanian road trip! The Tasman Cruise was the absolute highlight of our Tasmanian road trip! It was an unforgettable experience—thrilling, breathtaking, and so much fun. The scenery was surreal, and some of the photos we captured look straight out of a postcard. The staff were incredible—warm, welcoming, and truly passionate about what they do. If you’re visiting Tasmania, this cruise is a must-do—you won’t regret it! 🚤✨Written 9 February 2025
- annag8500 contributionsThe cruise is only two hours, not three but spectacular cliffs and sealifeI was not quite lucky with the weather and the tour could not go the full length or into caves. The brochure says that it is a three hour cruise but in fact it is only two hours because the bus transfer from Port Arthur General Store to the Jetty plus boarding takes up one hour. The cliffs are spectacular and I could take some great photos from the speeding boat as I sat in an end-seat in the middle and could take photos sitting down. We saw some seals and dolphins and bird life: cormorants and the rare albatross. If you want to see seals I recommend the Maria Island and Ile de Phoque Cruise though. I would have liked it if the boat had stopped a few times more for the cliffs. The going was at times a bit rough but I liked that - just some more time would have been nice. Nobody got seasick. They gave us Ginger Tablets. The two guides were very funny and gave us excellent information. The toilet on board is highly appreciated. I did get a bit cold towards the end but that was my fault - they tell you to wear warm clothes. Their long red gown is very valuable that you do not get wet on the lower part of your body.Written 22 January 2025
- 811stuarts0 contributionsWaves, wind and spectacular cliff views.Fabulous 3 hour cruise around the spectacular Tasman Peninsula coast in small but very stable rigid inflatable craft. Crew were attentive and knowledgeable, and the commentary was very informative. Spray jackets provided, but dress warmly, the wind can be very chilly even in summer. We were fortunate to get the whole experience including an almost-complete circuit of Tasman Island - waves and weather may not always allow this. We saw seals and plenty of birdlife, including the rare shy albatross, wonderful experience.Written 15 January 2025
- N8445LEkareng0 contributionsA MUST DO TOUR!!!This was definitely one of my fave tours while in Tasmania! We did the arvo tour and we were blessed with lovely weather !To see the ruggedness of that part of the Port Arthur coastline was astounding. Huge craggy cliffs with caves and inlets. The seals and the dolphins put on a swim show for us, the dolphins riding the bow wave never gets boring! A few speedy bits which where met with screams of fun and delight! ( Mostly mine!) The staff were lovely, friendly, amusing and determined to have you get the best out of this tour. I highly recommend to sit at the front if you want a bumpy ride!!!! 😁 Ps the boat floor can get wet at the front take minimum stuff guys you really don't need itWritten 9 January 2025

- Tyler S0 contributionsGreat trip! The whole boat trip was well organised, and Lily and Las who were our boat crew were great, cracking jokes but also explaining everything in an easy way to understand. You also didn’t miss anything as they ensured we circled and everyone on the boat got a thorough look. We were lucky and saw dolphins, two types or seals and albatross. Next time I’m back in Hobart wouldn’t hesitate to book a trip again.Written 26 December 2024
- 848kimg0 contributionsA Beautiful Area To ExploreWe took the tour from Port Arthur. The boat ride was very rough. They do offer everyone ginger tablets but be prepared with your own seasickness tablets as well. The crew was fun and engaging. They took good care of those that were ill onboard. A slicker is provided but be prepared to get wet as the water comes up over the edges of the boat as you go through the waves. The scenery is truly spectacular and we were very lucky to come across a pod of orcas. It was pretty magical. A great trip as long as you are well prepared for the waves.Written 28 November 2024

The boat cruise took us down the coastline from Eaglehawk Neck to Cape Pillar and Tasman Island. We saw an abundance of sea life from whales, dolphins, seals, albatross, shearwater, gannets and more. The crew were very informative and took us around the Hippolyte Rock in search of more whales. Highly recommended for nature lovers when visiting Tasmania.Written 11 November 2024
- 971seanw0 contributionsAn unforgettable day! What an incredible day! We were lucky enough to have Jo & Andrew as our deckhands who were brilliant - both energetic and enthusiastic about this stunning part of the world. Their knowledge of not only the area and it’s history but also all of the local wildlife was unparalleled. They continuously checked in with everyone as it was a bit of a rough day on the water and even retrieved another passenger’s runaway beanie from the ocean. We were fortunate enough to see seals, a couple of albatrosses and even a couple of pods of humpback whales! The scenery was absolutely stunning and being able to see Tasman Island as well as the east and west coasts was absolute treat. Highly recommend!Written 10 October 2024

What an awesome trip! The cruise was the best part - where you can see all the cliffs and rock formations and seals! Dress warmly as it was still cold in January.
Port Arthur was also a great place to visit. We chose to do our own thing there instead of joining the group tour as we wanted to wander around at our own pace especially with the kids.
The lunch provided was generous and delicious!
My only let down was that all the single travellers sat alone on the bus leaving a tonne of single sits meaning families and couples had to sit apart. It would have been great if the singles were asked to sit together.

We chose to option of the Tasman Island full day tour including the Port Arthur Historic site.
The whole day from start to finish, totally enjoyable.
The day starts from the Pennicott Wilderness Booking Centre on the Hobart waterfront. The bus leaves around 0745 for a scenic drive, with the first stop at the Lavender farm for a welcome cup of coffee and home-made scones.
Following this, 1000 and it is time to board the boat for a cruise. There is a bit of a walk down to the boat , which could be a concern for any-one with mobility issues.
As per instructions, dress warmly. The red over jackets, one size fits all offer good protection from the elements. I suggest sunglasses to help protect eyes from the wind. If problems with motion sickness, taking something prior the cruise recommended.
The cruise delivers on all it's promises. The scenery is breathtaking. While no whales, plenty of dolphins for company, along with the albatross and seals. While the ride choppy at times, the boat is well designed to cope with the swells, and we felt completely secure and safe.
Following the cruise, it was a short bus ride to Port Arthur, where a basic but generous lunch supplied. Following lunch, we joined a guided tour, which we would recommend. There was also an option of another small boat cruise, but we chose to explore the area on our own. Port Arthur is a beautiful setting and it was a lovely way to step back in time. At no time did the day feel rushed.
From Port Arthur, it was a relaxing bus trip back to Hobart. Thank you Pennicott for an amazing day.

Unfortunately felt very much like a school excursion. Logistics were frustrating, lining up at the start to check in , then again to order your morning tea and lunch ( lunch served in a brown paper bag). Minimal time to explore locations , most of the time is on the bus which was cramped ( 43 passengers). The staff are lovely but I would not recommend this tour if you prefer to spend more time seeing places or don’t like being on a bus for long periods.

Hi Wendie
Thank you so much for taking the time to share your feedback. We are disappointed to hear that your experience did not meet your expectations. The transfer from Hobart to Port Arthur is 90 minutes one way. We stop for morning tea at a local cafe before joining the cruise. Our cruise is approximately 3 hours and we do allocate around 3 hours at the Port Arthur Historic Site including a packed lunch to enable guests to have more time exploring around the Site. Our other Tasman Island Cruises day tour options have a sit down lunch at a local restaurant. The day you travelled was a very busy day, with the tour completely booked out.
Thank you again for your considered feedback.
Best Regards

This was a great day to pack in and see a lot of the Port Arthur region with a Tasman Island cruise! Our tour guide was experienced and a local so was able to give us really valuable insight during the trip. An absolutely wonderful experience that if you’re slightly strapped on time, is a good way to explore. We would recommend individualising the components of the tour if you have more time and a hire car of your own.

We were told they did not offer hotel pick up on this tour so we made our way to the Pennicott Journeys office at Franklin wharf independently. We left at 7.45 am on a bus. The drive was comfortable. Luke our bus driver was friendly and professional. We stopped at Rosedale Homestead Animal Park to have a delightful morning tea at the restaurant. The muffins were absolutely amazing. Next stop was the boat ramp before and we were on our way to experience fantastic views of sea cliffs and caves. We were handed out ginger tablets and luckily nobody threw up on the boat! The boat was able to manouver slightly into some of the caves. We were fortunate to experience a beautiful day (not cold thankfully) and calm waters. We saw seals, dolphins and birds.
After the cruise, we were dropped off at the Port Arthur site. We had decent lunch here before we explored the place further. Luke returned to collect us at approx 4.30 and we hopped back on the bus to be driven back to Hobart.
Customer service was excellent- I had left my sunglasses on the boat and the team were able to retrieve it and post it to my residential address.
I would highly recommended this trip.

Found the whole pick up and transfer exercise rather cumbersome with multiple options for pick up and drop off causing a logistics problem that someone at Tasman Cruises needs to get sorted out. Only one toilet at the first stop to have morning tea just didn’t work. At one point I counted 11 people in the queue, causing delays to the various pick ups and drop offs. The boat ride was good, with an expert helmsman who provided excellent commentary. However rather disappointed with the lack of wildlife other than a few fur seals and access to the rails for anyone not seated at the end of the rows was difficult. The boat was swung through 360 deg a number of times for all to see, but if you weren’t seated at a row end and were a photographer who didn’t want shots of railings and other passengers you were out of luck..
Port Arthur was OK, probably not helped by our Californian guide who just provided the wrong type of info in rather a shouty manner. Go and see the Strahan cruise to Sarah island to see how a prison visit should be commented upon.
Food (muffin at morning tea and a nice filled roll and soup for lunch) was good.

Excellent value.
Did the full tour from Hobart to morning tea at a charming little ranch restaurant, then the cruise around to Tasman island with knowledgeable guides, drove to Port Arthur for a great little lunch and historic tour, then the drive back to Hobart into the sunset. Our driver, Phil, was amazing.
Very lovely tour that was well worth it.

The boat cruise was amazing - great sights, interesting sealife, The dolphins swam alongside us for awhile. In a couple areas, seals were plentiful among the rocks. Well worth the time.
Our guide was very knowledgeable. He had us preorder lunch and had the large restaurant at Port Arthur reserve a table for our group, so our table was ready when we arrived and lunch was brought out soon after that.
Before the tour of Port Arthor Historic Site began, I asked what it would cover. Because of the depth of information they planned on sharing about the history of the site, the tour was only going to cover 1 building. So, I skipped the guided tour and explored the site on my own. Plaques in reach building/area provided adequate information so I knew the history of what I was seeing. I'm glad I did that.

The 3 hr boat cruise round Tasman Island was sensational. We had a calm sea and good weather so we're able to go up the east coast. Highlight was seeing dolphins and a whale - what an experience!!!!.
The bus driver and the two female crew on the boat were friendly and knowledgeable and made the cruise all the most enjoyable.
Port Arthur was also great but just didn't have a lot of time to explore the area. Lunch was very good too. Overall a wonderful day trip setting the wild beauty of the Tasmanian south coast. If your thinking of doing this trip and think it's expensive I say do it, it is absolutely worth every cent.

Hello, would like to check, I will be staying at Dodges Ferry during the trip. Hence, will only be able to reach Hobart by 7.45am maximum cause I will be taking public transport. Is this ok? Or is there a better alternative, e.g. pick-up point at Dodges Ferry.
Written 3 March 2023
I am not familiar with the location (Dodges Ferry) so I would suggest contacting Pennicott Wilderness Tours themselves, for options about meeting points / pick-ups.

I am not a great ‘on water’ traveller as I get bad motion sickness. Is this cruise on open water where it can get quite rough or is it in a protected inlet?

You will return about 6/7 pm, but you are passing by the airport, suggest you contact the tour operator and see if they can drop you off at the airport, that should allow you about 2 hours to check in before departure.

It says the tour lasts 10.5 hours. Will we be back in Hobart around 7 pm? (wanting to know if it's realistic to book an 8 pm concert)

Hi there, I am coming down for Dark Mofo, but would also like to see Tassie as I haven't been before, I'm from Brissy. Can you please advise when this tour returns, as my friend works in the city and I will have to check to make sure the times are ok. If you can please advise return time, that would be great. (approx. is ok). Cheers Ange :)
Written 4 June 2018
Hi Ange, The whole Port Arthur experience will take the best part of a day, comprising an early start from Hobart, an hour and a half drive to the Port Arthur area and then its your pick of doing either Port Arthur Historic Site or the Pennicott Adventure Boat Tour which is half day activity in its own right. For the Boat Tour (which is in a custom built, triple 350hp {!!}, open ocean high speed boat) the pick up point is the Pennicott shop on the Tasman highway near Stewart's Bay. I think you can also get a bus from the Hobart waterfront to the start point but I'd ring the Pennicott Company to check that. Either way, you are bussed to the launch site on Eaglehawk Neck and actual adventure tour boat part takes around two and a half hours and then its a reverse of what I've outlined. If you like spectacular scenery and dolphins, its a must do. I'm a local and I was extremely impressed. If you just want to see the Port Arthur Historic Site, the drive from Hobart is again around one and a half hours (car or bus) and I'd recommend at least three hours there at minimum. You can also do a short boat trip from the site across to the Isle of the Dead which is extremely interesting. Dark Mofo will be great so I hope you enjoy!
