After dinnertime, be ready for pickup at your hotel in Kingscote. Climb in to a 4-wheel-drive vehicle, which allows easy access to the rugged terrain of Kangaroo Island, reaching places that traditional tour vehicles can't. As you head out into the dark, listen to your guide's commentary on the biology and behavior of the island's animals that are most active after dark. The drop in temperature and light after dark signals to many of these creatures that it's safe to come out; keep your eye out for Western grey kangaroos grazing in the open grasslands and wallabies coming out from the cover of small shrubs. Your guide helps you spot even more elusive creatures, such as echidna, stone curlews, boobook owls, or even penguins in their land burrows. End the tour with drop-off at your hotel.

The itinerary is quite flexible and tonight we will look for all those creatures who are more active at night time. Most of the wildlife is active after sunset, specially in Summer time. We will be able to observe kangaroos and wallabies grazing in to the grassland, shy possums climbing trees and mayne a solitary own flying around. At the end we will go to a secure beach where we will look for the little penguins borrowing in to the wild.

Best way to see Kangaroo Island
Our experience with KI Hire a Guide was absolutely 5 stars. We did the nocturnal tour with Luca and the day tour with Nikki, both of whom were fabulous. Nikki was very enthusiastic, extremely knowledgeable, and so much fun. She helped us spot a lot of animals including an echidna, koalas in trees and on the ground, kangaroos, eagles, sea lions & pups. The tour included a fabulous lunch cooked on the barbecue. We would highly recommend requesting Nikki for a day tour - she is absolutely phenomenal. Luca is very quick to respond to questions and pays attention to all the details when organizing the tours. He was great at spotting nocturnal activity during our night tour (including an echidna, penguins, opossums, kangaroos, an owl, and tons of wallabies of course). 10/10 recommend KI Hire a Guide.

      Podlax- A great tour
What a terrific day. Our guide Nikki Redman was so fun to be with She was knowledgeable and her love of the island and passion for the animals was obvious. We had five in the group and the excitement of the overseas family of seeing native Australian animals in the wild was infectious and made a great trip even better. Would definitely recommend this day trip especially if time is limited. Great memories. Thanks Niki and Luca

Two great tour days - two great Guides!
Enjoyed a fabulous day yesterday on the Seal Bay Tour with Nikki & also did the Flinders Chase tour with Luca last week. Both Guides have such great knowledge to share about flora & fauna , history & current issues. Great to have someone with local knowledge to drive us to places we’d never find or visit otherwise and know where to find the native fauna in their natural habitat. We saw lots! Lunch & comfy vehicle ride included. Highly recommend!

110% recommend doing this tour, so worthwhile hiring a guide to
Wow, what an incredibly enjoyable day! Nikki made the whole day so wonderful for our family. Her enthusiasm, wealth of knowledge and love for Kangaroo Island shone through. From the accommodating side jaunts for our bird phtotography interest, to the magic of Seal Bay, the spotting of koalas and echidnas and the delicious lunch. We topped off our day capturing the Western Whip Bird, glad we were there to share that special moment with you Nikki! Highly, highly recommend Nikki and Luca to see all the sights of KI. A must do.

      Kangaroo Island Guide review
A big thank you to Nikki for the wonderful tour last Wednesday. This was the highlight of our trip to Australia - with a superb mix of local knowledge, passion for the island, huge respect for the ecosystem of the island - animals, bird and people - it made for an unforgettable day. We have so many wonderful memories and you really shared your love and excitement of the island from walking with sea lions to koala and echidna spotting it was a remarkable day. And thanks to Luca for all the organisation and a lovely lunch.

      Nikki is a marsupial expert
Our guide was Nikki Redman. And a more knowledgeable guide it would be hard to find. She answered everything. And is a marsupial EXPERT. She took us to the natural habitats of kangaroos and koalas. We got great photos. Nikki is a wonderful photographer herself. Plants, birds, seals, sea lions, beaches, rock formations. No negatives at all except the hot hot day and as we picked our day we can't complain. And she gave us an excellent lunch. It was a day to remember. Highly recommended.

      Great Day on Kangaroo Island
Luca made our day on Kangaroo Island a special one! He met us at the airport in the morning and showed us around as much of the island as time permitted before our evening flight back to Adelaide. He introduced us to a place about which you could tell he was passionate, treating us to a memorable day full of interesting sights (sea lions, Admiral’s Arch, Remarkable Rocks…) PLUS a delicious barbecue lunch. AND we got to see koalas in the wild for the first time ever!

Wonderful all day small group experience on the island
The tour began early in the day and didn’t return to the hotel until 5:30. Luca was our guide for the day, was very knowledgeable about the island and the animals. We stopped frequently all day long to see and take photos of all the must do places as well as several sites to see kangaroos and koalas. Luca provided coffee/tea and biscuits mid morning, water all day and a beautiful lunch where he grilled lamb and bread to go with the salad and couscous. The lemonade and orange juice were quite good as well. The small group was truly a small group with only five of us. Luca has a great sense of humor and treated us like family! Great tour!

      Great experience on the island!
The Kangaroo Island is a wonder itself but Luca really helped us discover it. We booked the nocturnal tour with him and saw in less than 2h kangaroos, wallabes, koalas, penguins, pelicans and opossums. The following day we booked the full day with him and experienced the encounter with the seals/sea lions, a very close one with koalas, a nice barbaque and wonderful beaches. Luca is a great guide, he really made the experience on the island spectacular!

Nice, but not worth the cost
We had a lovely day on the West End Wildlife Tour, but it wasn’t anything we couldn’t have planned on our own and was a bit expensive for what we got. We went to Flinders Chase and Remarkable Rocks, but we definitely could have found those on our own. Our tour guide didn’t give too much additional information about the island. The best part of the day was koala spotting in the trees and the drive through a very kangaroo heavy area. I would only suggest this if you are short on time. Otherwise, it isn’t worth the cost.

      Amazing experience!
Fantastic diurnal and nocturnal tour of Kangaroo Island, with the expert guide (and great chef ;-) Luca! Many animals could be spotted in the wild: kangaroos, koalas, penguins, sea lions, seals... And a beautiful view of the night sky, with explanations on the Southern Cross. Unforgettable!

We had a great time finding and viewing wildlife on Kangaroo Island on this tour! Most wildlife is nocturnal and this tour offers a great opportunity to see animals outside of zoos and parks.

We had an amazing night. We saw 4 koalas, 1 owls, many kangaroos, wallabies, little penguins and possums. It is totally worth the money!! We went on other tours, too, but we saw the most animals during this night tour. We even saw a koala JOGGING&RUNNING! We also met little penguins very closely, comparing how we met them in other tours. The whole trip was safe and the guide was very considerate.
It was a “once in a life” experience for us.

Our family of 3 was on the 4WD Nocturnal tour that start from 8pm to 10.30pm with Luca.
We felt that it was a total waste of money (A$100 per person) for a tour which we only sighted Kangaroos and Wallabies. We did not see any Koala, Owl nor Penguin that night - only lots of wallabies and kangaroos.

Luca, an Italian staying in KI for many years, was indeed very knowledgeable but may not be at his best to find us wildlife that fateful night. We went home disappointed.

Paying a fraction of the cost to visit Wildlife park in main SA are more worthwhile.

Hi Sally, yes you are absolutely right. Unfortunately some time the "wild" animals are not "performing" at their best and we have already sent an official notice to them. The Koala will be sacked on the spot and the penguins are already gone on strike because we did not paid them enough fish ... Yes please go to the Wildlife Park next time and enjoy your time there. I'm sure you will enjoy feeding the kangaroos and the wallabies. On a more serious note: 1. Your tour was in MAY and penguins are coming to the island in WINTER for the breeding season. May in Australia is not winter ... 2. If you wish to see them come back in winter (NOW). 3. We do not train those animals .. they are wild. 4. We do not have any influence on them, they will come when they want. 5. Koalas are quite rare now (did I mentioned that they are now an endangered listed animal?). Some time we do see them, some time not ... they are wild! By the way we are glad that you enjoyed our wallabies and kangaroos!
