About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- JaneS4900 contributionsGreat introduction to the wines of the BarossaA excellent tour just four of us with driver and guide Paul. Lots of history of Adelaide and the Barossa on the way up. We were completely unaware of the German History beforehand. Visited four Wineries including Yalumba (our favourite Viognier) and three smaller ones. Great range of wines to try with some surprises including a sparking Shiraz.Written 6 February 2025
- ScottJ4190 contributionsThe Heart of Our Wine Tasting Experience in the Barossa ValleyIf you are going to visit wineries in the Adelaide area, then Small Batch Wine Tours is the only way to go. My wife and I signed up for two tours with Matthew and his team, both in the Barossa Valley. The first tour was run by Matthew, the head of Small Batch Tours and the second was run by Chris. Both gentlemen knew everything they needed to know about the Barossa and its wines. Moreover, they were focused on understanding what we wanted from the tour. When we signed up for the tours, we were asked about our preferences in wines and the experience we were looking for. Matthew then made sure we visited wineries that matched our taste. We were provided with the list of wineries matching those perferences that we would visit well ahead of time. And he continually discussed our expriences with us during the first tour, so that when it came time for the second tour, the list of wineries to be visited had been revised to more closely match the wines we most enjoyed. Moreover, Matthew was constantly providing us with information which would help us enjoy our vacation in Adelaide, whether it was places to dine in the Adelaide area or Barossa Valley or wineries that he thought we would enjoy visiting on the days we were not taking a tour with Small Batch WIne Tours. Finally, we ordered wine from various wineries to be shipped overseas to our home. Without any request from us, Matthew coordinated with the shipping company to ensure that they understood that all of our various orders were part of the same shipment. We cannot have asked for any better service or a better experience in the Barossa Valley. Within 24 hours of our first tour with Small Batch Wine Tours my wife and I knew we would be coming back. And next time, before we make plans we are going to talk to Matthew first about what to do. It is not what you know, it is who you know. And if you are wine tasting in the Adelaide region, you need to know Matthew and his team.Written 27 January 2025
- GeoffM7990 contributionsAn Enjoyable and Informative DayWhenever my wife and I visit wine growing areas we can’t help but take a wine tour and our trip to Adelaide was no different. Over the years we have learnt that the smaller tours with lunch offer a better experience as the organisers tend to select the smaller boutique wineries . This tour being no different. We were joined by another couple from Switzerland so we were a linguistically mixed group. Our driver, of a very comfortable vehicle , kept us all entertained and informed throughout the day long tour The 4 wineries we visited were small batch and all bar one have agents in the UK and Switzerland which we intend the contact upon our return home. 2 tastings in the morning followed by 2 in the afternoon demand lunch. The chosen venue was excellent and we all enjoyed the ‘ chef’s selection’ together with the obligatory glass of wine. We were surprised at the range of wines produced in Barossa , not just Shiraz , so had an enjoyable and informative day and would recommend this tourWritten 12 January 2025
- livefornextholiday0 contributionsBe sure of your expectations prior to booking!!We booked a micro-group tour expecting personalized service tailored to the group, but unfortunately, the experience fell short. The driver was pushy, talked excessively, and seemed unable to read the group’s dynamic. Instead of a unique and memorable experience, we were taken to four wineries that felt obscure and underwhelming. At $350 per head, we expected so much more—especially a thoughtful itinerary and a more refined approach. In hindsight, we would have achieved much more with a self-drive experience.Written 6 December 2024
- Chobra0 contributionsA trip full of laughtersBig thanks to Matt who took good care of us during our day trip to Barossa. The micro group tour turned out to be a private tour of my family— just us four travelling. The choice of wineries (and Matt entertained my request!) and the restaurant for lunch was excellent. Besides, the histories and stories we shared were so enjoyable. And yeah, what a fun and memorable trip.Written 22 November 2024
- GordonE3910 contributionsGreat day out.A great very personal tour guided / driven very competently by an expert in the field of wines in all their diversity and complexity. A very enjoyable day out.Written 30 October 2024
- Happy7Voyager0 contributionsTom made our tour unforgettableBeing interested in enotourism and having visited many wineries in various countries, I select wine tasting tours very carefully. Moreover, I wanted to make sure that the tour will be running as we were limited on time (the tour runs with minimum 2 people). Small Batch Wine Tours was the BEST choice I could have made. Due to low season, there were only two of us (my dad and myself) but we had an amazing day. Tom picked up us promptly and we drove to Barossa. We visited 2 wineries in the morning (Langmeil and David Franz Cellardoor) and 2 in the afternoon (Rockford Wines and Turkey Flat). The quality of wine was superb and we were happy to taste sparkling shiraz for the first time in life. Lunch was delicious with 3 course meal - very tasty and filling. What made this tour special was our guide and companion for the day - TOM. Tom was very knowledgeable and easy to talk to - we had plenty of questions (not only about wine but Australia in general) and Tom was patient in answering. After a couple of hours spent with Tom we felt as if we met an old friend. We fully recommend this tour to all who love wine of good quality, who wish to discover more and have a conversation with friendly passionate Aussie guide and who want to enjoy the moment without being rushed. Thank you Tom, thank you Batch Wine Tours :-)Written 19 August 2024
- obxnativ0 contributionsAmazing day! Highly recommendFrom the moment Tom picked us up in Adelaide we knew we would have an amazing day. Tom's extremely knowledgeable but isn't a nonstop talker. He quickly discovered what interested us most and provided great information. We toured 4 wineries and were treated to a fabulous lunch. We've done multiple wine tours in NZ and Australia on our trip and this was by far our favorite!Written 11 February 2024
- smbjazz0 contributionsWonderful day in McLaren Vale with Small Batch. We were out with Small Batch in January 2024. We visited 4 wineries and Salopian for lunch (which was so good). We also stopped to see the D'arenberg Cube, however, we chose not to go in as it was busy. We chose to go to smaller wineries, the first one, we were like the only people there. And then at the last stop, we were on a buggy in the vines, tasting wine and seeing the landscapes. It was so fun and a different way to taste wine.Written 27 January 2024
- Z855NHlorraineg0 contributionsA Fantastic Wine TourI’ve done a few wine tours over the years, and this was one of the best. Our driver/guide Tom, did a terrific job of explaining the day’s itinerary, and provided commentary and answered our questions during the drive. My tour included stops at four wineries: Yangarra, Wirra Wirra, D’Arenberg (along with a visit to the cube and exceptional Salvadore Dali Exhibit) and Samuel’s Gorge. All of the hosts were excellent and explained their process and the nuances of each of their wines. A fantastic day! Thank you! Lorraine GWritten 16 January 2024

- StephJD130 contributionsExcellent day and fabulous wines! We had an excellent day in the Barossa Valley with Tom as our guide, who was very informative about the local area as well as the wine producers. All four of the cellar doors tasting sessions we had were excellent, showcasing a great selection of wines and giving very good information about each wine. Lunch was also excellent at Jacobs Creek winery! Thoroughly recommend this trip as being a small group you get a very personal touch and our fellow travellers were great fun too!Written 23 November 2023
- lescoley0 contributionsSmall Batch Wine ToursAn excellent day in McLaren Vale at Yangarra Estate, Lino Ramble, Gemtree Wines and Samuel’s Gorge. All the wines were delicious and our guide, Chris, was very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful! Lunch at the McLaren Vale hotel was very enjoyable too. We were glad we didn’t have to drive! Thanks to everyone!Written 31 October 2023
- T13XEpaulm0 contributionsWell worth it!This was an exceptional day. Matthew was easy to work with, spent time understanding what we were interested in and organised a great day out. New wineries we hadn't tried before and a couple of old favourites. A great lunch. He is both knowledgeable and good company. It really was a superb way to see the area.Written 21 July 2023

Such a great, personalized experience. They asked for a brief survey to be completed ahead of time and really listened to our expectations. Matt is well known at the wineries and gives a lot of great information about the region between stops. We discovered two wineries we never would have found otherwise.

Thanks so much for the invaluable feedback provided as part of our pre-departure survey. This short survey told us what we needed to know about your level of wine-geekery so we could tailor an experience to match. Truly bespoke tailored touring unlike anything else out there - that's the Small Batch Wine Tours difference!

Such a wonderful way to spend Valentines Day. And while we didn't get to spend the day with Matthew, we did get to spend the day with Matt. He was very knowledgeable fun, and kept us on schedule. First stop, Artisans of Barossa. Amazing wines, especially those from Lienert Vineyards. Then lunch at FINO in Seppeltsfield, an exceptional restaurant. On to Two Hands and their powerhouse Shiraz. Lastly, it was a stop at Torbreck, producer of some of the world's most sought after Shiraz. Then, unfortunately, it was time to head back to the ship.
Thank-you, Matt, for arranging this tour around our cruise ship schedule. The whole day was memorable. I would give you six stars if I could. I just wish that I had been able to purchase and bring back more wine. Twelve bottles wasn't enough. I have had some good Syrahs (Shiraz) produced here in the US, but I now truly believe that the best are produced in Australia, specifically the Barossa Valley.

I'm extremely happy to hear you had a great day out with Matt after we put together a cracking itinerary for you. Indeed we are the world capital for Shiraz, you'll now be able to wow your friends back home with your "suitcase imports". Thanks very much for the support, and for taking the time to leave a fab review.

We had a great day with Matt. His knowledge of not only the wine but of the area as well was amazing. We tried wines that I wouldn’t normally and they genuinely surprised us in a good way. Lunch was also a standout. The food was delicious. A large selection of foods without being too much. Next time we are in Adelaide, we will definitely be doing another tour to a different region.

Our day with Matthew/Small Batch Wine Tours was a highlight of our entire Australian adventure. He is not only super knowledgeable about wines and the Barossa Valley, he is articulate, well versed in local history, and very entertaining. Matthew took us to some incredible artisan wineries that we never would have found on our own, and the respect those vintners have for him is evident in the way they allow him to bring guests right into their operations. We learned much about this beautiful area, and had an outstanding lunch at one of the wineries he had chosen for us - REALLY special. Of course we ended up buying some excellent wines at all of the wineries we visited and thoroughly enjoyed those during the remainder of our vacation! This day was not just a "wine tour'....Matthew stopped at some places he felt we MUST see along the way that we SO enjoyed and were so glad we got to visit, some unique sights and experiences that we might have missed on our own. Can't say enough good about this young man and the way he operates - it was a day we will never forget and he is a quality tour guide!!

Amazing feedback Vicky, endless thanks for your insight and humbling words. I'm always happy to share my passion and knowledge for all things South Australian, and it's a delight to connect with people such as yourself and Dave on so many other fronts. Very pleased to have made your time in Adelaide memorable.

The three of us joined Matt and one other guest on a tour tailored to our wine preferences. Matt provided a friendly, informative tour. It was like touring wineries with a well-informed friend. He provided lots of information about Barossa Valley, the wineries (Two Hands, Artisans of Barossa Valley, Standish, and Ballycroft), and some AU history. Everything about the day was easy; Matt picked us up and dropped us off at our hotel. The vehicle was very comfortable. We loved all the wineries we visited and learned so much. Matt arranged for the wine we purchased from all the vineyards to be shipped. The whole day was one of the highlights of our trip. We highly recommend Small Batch Wine Tours and will certainly take another tour if we're lucky enough to travel back to Adelaide again!

Where to begin???
Matthew was extremely pleasant, outgoing, knows his area and wines and was very helpful to Us for our first tour of some wineries in this region of The Barossa. Matthew picked Us up from our accommodation in Handorf and from that moment, we were in for a special day. First stop a private tour at Henschke with Amalee (who was very lovely and helpful) and that was an incredible couple of hours. Learning the history of the winery and walking through the vineyards, then followed up with a private sampling of their wines. Very enjoyable and amazing time there! And a few bottles to dispatch home!
Then onto Seppeltsfield for a 4/5 course lunch at Fino, (extremely delicious) then followed with a private tour with Nigel. Again, amazing history, the surrounding buildings and then we had a "taste of our birth year" experience!!! Fantastic!!!! Their fortified wines - a taste sensation.
From there we went onto Penfolds, through some gorgeous countryside, passing vineyard after vineyard, breathtaking. Nicole was our private guide on all things at Penfolds and to see and hear about "The Grange" - incredible. More wines dispatched home.
Then back to our accommodation through some more amazing scenery.
We were totally spoilt for the day and it was thanks to Matthew, who arranged everything for Us. We could not have organised anything as wonderful as what Matthew did. He is fantastic at what he does. Thank You Matthew and all the Wineries for making our first time to the Barossa an unforgettable experience!!!!!

Tim & Annelise - what a day! So very happy to hear that the maiden run of The Pinnacle Tour was such a hit. As you witnessed, the history and wines we have access to just out of Adelaide is world class. I look forward to seeing you both again soon :)

My partner and I had the best day with Matt. Not only was he able to track down wineries that we would have never found ourselves, he had a fantastic knowledge of the area and the wines being made. He also was able to recommend and get us into some of the best restaurants around for the following days and recommend the cutest accomodation in Tanunda. Overall such a great day. We will be back!

We had a great day in Barossa Valley. Matthew customized the day and the wineries we went to based on our interests. He is very knowledgeable about the wines and the area, and he clearly enjoys sharing that information with guests. He was able to take us to lesser known boutique wineries as well as more prominent wineries, and we tasted some interesting and wonderful wines. We were able to get a real sense of the wines produced in Barossa. We would highly recommend this tour.

Sylvia, what an unreal day out that was! From the old to the new, the big names to the undiscovered - we really saw a great cross section of what the Barossa has to offer.
Many thanks for your great review, and I know you'll have plenty of amazing stories to share with friends and family back home in the US.
