Very disappointing as we live in Canada and this was our wine of choice. Lots of staff just standing around not to impressive.Written 14 November 2024
- P8534HKsallyb0 contributionsTasting WeekendHaving eaten at Magill Estate Kitchen on Sunday (which was excellent) just passed, we decided to go to the celler door for a tasting prior. Was a good experience, although it seemed as if everyone was running around a lot. We didn’t have a booking however felt lucky to be taken care of. Would go again on a quieter day.Written 12 November 2024
- WorldTravellerOz0 contributionsAmazingCame here to try a few wines and was blessed to be looked after by Ann who made the visit better than the wines. Her knowledge and experience was amazing and made the difference. Highly recommended.Written 20 September 2024
- W6794AOkarlal0 contributionsA lovely tour and tasting of PenfoldsJosh was a very informative and engaging tour guide through the winery. He then provided a detailed tasting, answering questions and walking us through a beautiful tasting flight, finishing with the delicious Magill Estate wine. Perfect way to spend some time in Adelaide. Highly recommend!Written 26 April 2024
- Ree M0 contributionsAmazing tour !We did the tour along with the tasting afterwards, Josh looked after us throughout. Amazingly informative when it came to the history of penfolds, the wine making process past and present, and a thorough knowledge when it came to the different tasting notes. Causing us to buy more wine then we intended. Cannot recommend Josh enough! Overall the experience was amazing and well worth it!Written 22 September 2023
- Tracey K0 contributionsGreat way to wine tasteOur guide was great very informative and engaging with the history of Penfolds. Nice small group and not rushed with the tastings of some great wines. Ended up spending the afternoon having a meal and a bottle of wine, food was incredible as was the staff!!Written 1 April 2023
- David H0 contributionsWorth a visitFabulous visit, tour and tasting at this iconic vineyard. The ultimate tasting which was 6 top wines also includes a taste of many of the top wines - The Grange, RWT and The Yattarna Chardonnay to name a few. Our guide was Ivan who was incredibly helpful and informative in this fantastic cellar door and vineyard tour. The cellar door is very spacious and merges the old history of the Penfolds site with the very modern cellar door.Written 19 February 2023
- Relax7670060 contributionsNon ultimate experienceBooked this "Ultimate experience" with expectation to have the fine wine tasting including world reknown Grange in a beautiful, calm settings as per homepage. It turned out, not. Tour in the winery was informative, yet in a quite rush, A true disssapointment was when we were sat at a corner of an open loud lounge for $150 worth wine tasting. Just a small coffee table was prepared on which they jammed glasses and price lists. It was not possible to examine the colour of the wine as the table was black and sun reflection from the window behind was too strong. Explanation and walk-through of wine was one-sided. the guide walked away soon after he poured us wine. May be the reason that they were occupied with VIP or private function guests in private tasting rooms, but we did not feel our experience was worth the price.Written 6 February 2023
- Anne S0 contributionsA fabulous and informative tour with tastings of 8 wines. This is fabulous tour and tasting experience. The tour by Ivan was hugely informative and took us through the original old workings of the circa 1844 estate, complete with a visit to Dr Penfold’s original house and office and the original stone buildings and cellars. Marvel at the Grange Hermitage cellar and feast your eyes at 1950s wines. The tasting includes 8 different wines varying from $40 to $135 per bottle. Very good value for money. Without doubt the best value for money tasting I’ve ever had.Written 10 January 2023
- DN730 contributionsDreadfulDreadful It was worse on my second recent visit. I usually spend $3000 or more on Penfolds wine but wont any more. Even with a penfolds status I was treated worse than poorly and had to cop some standard tasting menu so I ended up leaving. Total waste of time. Will never go backWritten 25 December 2022
- Harold W0 contributionsAbsolute best!Penfolds Magill Estate Cellar Door We walked-in at the last minute and were lucky enough to be able to join the cellar door tour that includes the tasting at the end. The tour was excellent done by Ivan. He really shows us the warm hospitality and displays an extensive knowledge about the estate. The tour was interactive, informative and entertaining. We couldn't ask for more. We would definitely recommend this when you are in Adelaide. A very memorable day and experience indeed! It was that good!Written 14 December 2022
- AussieTraveller32040 contributionsGreat afternoon of wine tastingWe had a private tasting experience at the winery which is in such a lovely location in Adelaide. Despite the rainy day we enjoyed many wines with an excellent wine maker explaining all the wines. It was a lovely afternoon with no pressure at all to purchase at the end of the tasting. Well worth a visitWritten 21 October 2022
- Kylie C0 contributionsTour and tastingWe experienced the wine tour at penfolds and would definitely recommend this on your visit here. Finished off with wine tastingWritten 5 August 2022

Sam our tour guide has amazing knowledge and made this an experience to remember. Small group, two different vintage Grange tastings plus a couple of other delicious reds and a port, very tasty food, a private tasting room with music from the iconic Grange Record Player … a wonderful experience. Would highly recommend. Thank you Sam for making this such a special experience and sharing your extensive knowledge and love of wine with us.Written 14 January 2022

Our second visit after ?25 years. It’s a good tour but intense.Over 150 years +of history and lots and lots of wine.
We found arrival poor, the 11am crowds quite large and the cellar door reception not well organized.
When we got going Ivan was very knowledgeable and our group quiet but fun.
Cellars walk good then a sit down taste of 6 decent wines ending with a drop of young Grange Shiraz 2020 which sells for $1000.
The bad bit was lunch, we were all split into tables for 2 in the Magill Cafe not the good restaurant and the menu and wines were set, no choice.
King fish starter was good, some tough beef and salad, poor sticky toffee pudding.(3Wines)
The room very busy ,noisy and the chair cold unpadded. It was good to get out and away.
At the end of December opening hours were weird due to closed periods in the Australian way of closures during high season!
I strongly recommend a short tour and eating only at the main restaurant.
But don’t miss a walk down to the historic Penfold family cottage which was not included in the walk about.
We came back to the city by public bus from near by stop it was more fun than a taxi.

We were lucky enough to win two x $100 South Australian Experience promotional vouchers and looking around as to what we could use them on discovered the Iconic Penfolds Magill Experience for $295 per person but with the vouchers this reduced the cost to a more manageable $195 each.
We had previously been to Magill Estate for a lunch and a separate Taste Australia dinner function so we knew that it was only about a 15-20 minute drive from the city and on each of those occasions the food had been very good. The wines speak for themselves. Magill is the original home of Penfolds wines having been established in 1844.
We arrived at the Cellar Door and met up with our very experienced, informative and delightful guide Lee who quickly sorted out some issues that they were having with the use of the vouchers.
The tour started at the original home of Dr Rawson Penfold which is a short walk from the Cellar Door. Dr Penfold treated patients in his house whilst he and his wife, as a side light to begin with, tended to the vineyard and the business of making wine. He used to give his patient's some of his fortified wines for medicinal purposes.
Next was a visit to the winery itself, which is still in use, and then to some of the cellars where the barrels are stored.
Following this we were escorted into the Cellar Door and a very plush tasting room (one of a number in the Cellar Door) where we tasted six wines including two whites (Yattarna and a Reserve Bin A chardonnay) and four reds (including Grange, RWT, a 707 and a 169 Cabernet Sauvignon). As they have stopped giving guests cheese platters to have with the tastings during Covid we received a little Penfolds notebook.
Following the wine tasting we were shown into the Kitchen restaurant where we had a three course meal with matching wines. Our courses included quail, grilled lamb rump and a poached pear dessert. All of the dishes were very tasty.
We were then invited to go back into the main area of the cellar door to taste some Magill Estate and St Henri.
An excellent afternoon and thank you to Lee and the South Australian Government for making it so enjoyable and affordable.

This is just amazing. We did a tour with Jonah who went over and above to show us around the winery. He really shone when we sat down for a tasting of half a dozen wines including Grange.
Lunch was spectacular. It was a set menu, but with 2 dishes per couple to share for each course. Matched wines with each course. We couldn’t finish the deserts.
We bought a couple of bottles of wine for very close to retail bottle shop prices.
After all that we were supposed to do a normal wine tasting, but literally were too full and content to manage it.
Being Penfolds, there wasn’t a bad wine all day, and plenty that were memorable.
Make sure your partner doesn’t drink red wine and you can end up with a double taste of Grange ;)
I’m sorry, but I haven’t really conveyed just how good this experience is - just do it.

Touring Penfold's Magill Estate was one of the highlights on our recent visit to Australia. We chose the Iconic tour and got to spend an amazing 4 hours on the property. We walked through the production area, the cellar and even the founder's original cottage on the property and got to learn a lot about the long and illustrious history of Penfold's . Then we had an in-depth tasting of six of their premier wines and finished with a lovely and delicious paired wine lunch. Our guide was so friendly and informative as was all the staff in the tasting room and restaurant. Penfold's is now our favorite winery!

The tour and wine tasting was fantastic and we would give it five stars easily. The disappointment for us and reason for the lower rating was the three course lunch afterwards. We had read the Kitchen menu beforehand which looked great but unfortunately our set menu was not enjoyable. The lamb was tough and we still aren’t sure exactly what the entree was. Dessert was good. We wished we had just booked the tour and booked lunch separately ourselves so we could have selected off the website menu.

Very enjoyable day, We had a chap by the name of SAM to show us around the winery, tunnels etc, and also a wine tasting.
We thoroughly enjoyed his commentary, and also the tasting. This chap certainly knows his products. The wines were beautiful
WE also had lunch there which was first class, the food, service and staff were tops.
Would thoroughly suggest people to go to Penfolds. A great day was had by all.

We had just returned from a month long European holiday the day before.
This tour was up there with the best of tours we did overseas. Ryan our guide was so down to earth & knowledgable. We never felt like idiots asking stupid questions about wine (we’re semi-clueless). Wine was delicious, food was delicious, Ryan was the host with the most & a perfect ambassador for Penfolds. Love that this gem is only 15 minutes from home! Thanks Ryan.

A very informative tour was followed by a tasting of six of the highlights from the Penfolds range (ending in Grange), with a bonus tasting of the Magill Estate, and then a delicious lunch with 3 matching wines (generously poured). Our guide Rick was on hand afterwards to pour us a couple of bonus wines to try, to round off a very enjoyable day - thank you Rick and all the staff.
