- ScottJ4190 contributionsThe Heart of Our Wine Tasting Experience in the Barossa ValleyIf you are going to visit wineries in the Adelaide area, then Small Batch Wine Tours is the only way to go. My wife and I signed up for two tours with Matthew and his team, both in the Barossa Valley. The first tour was run by Matthew, the head of Small Batch Tours and the second was run by Chris. Both gentlemen knew everything they needed to know about the Barossa and its wines. Moreover, they were focused on understanding what we wanted from the tour. When we signed up for the tours, we were asked about our preferences in wines and the experience we were looking for. Matthew then made sure we visited wineries that matched our taste. We were provided with the list of wineries matching those perferences that we would visit well ahead of time. And he continually discussed our expriences with us during the first tour, so that when it came time for the second tour, the list of wineries to be visited had been revised to more closely match the wines we most enjoyed. Moreover, Matthew was constantly providing us with information which would help us enjoy our vacation in Adelaide, whether it was places to dine in the Adelaide area or Barossa Valley or wineries that he thought we would enjoy visiting on the days we were not taking a tour with Small Batch WIne Tours. Finally, we ordered wine from various wineries to be shipped overseas to our home. Without any request from us, Matthew coordinated with the shipping company to ensure that they understood that all of our various orders were part of the same shipment. We cannot have asked for any better service or a better experience in the Barossa Valley. Within 24 hours of our first tour with Small Batch Wine Tours my wife and I knew we would be coming back. And next time, before we make plans we are going to talk to Matthew first about what to do. It is not what you know, it is who you know. And if you are wine tasting in the Adelaide region, you need to know Matthew and his team.Written 27 January 2025
- DaWenti0 contributionsTruly personalized experienceSuch a great, personalized experience. They asked for a brief survey to be completed ahead of time and really listened to our expectations. Matt is well known at the wineries and gives a lot of great information about the region between stops. We discovered two wineries we never would have found otherwise.Written 16 November 2024
- obxnativ0 contributionsAmazing day! Highly recommendFrom the moment Tom picked us up in Adelaide we knew we would have an amazing day. Tom's extremely knowledgeable but isn't a nonstop talker. He quickly discovered what interested us most and provided great information. We toured 4 wineries and were treated to a fabulous lunch. We've done multiple wine tours in NZ and Australia on our trip and this was by far our favorite!Written 11 February 2024
- smbjazz0 contributionsWonderful day in McLaren Vale with Small Batch. We were out with Small Batch in January 2024. We visited 4 wineries and Salopian for lunch (which was so good). We also stopped to see the D'arenberg Cube, however, we chose not to go in as it was busy. We chose to go to smaller wineries, the first one, we were like the only people there. And then at the last stop, we were on a buggy in the vines, tasting wine and seeing the landscapes. It was so fun and a different way to taste wine.Written 27 January 2024
- Z855NHlorraineg0 contributionsA Fantastic Wine TourI’ve done a few wine tours over the years, and this was one of the best. Our driver/guide Tom, did a terrific job of explaining the day’s itinerary, and provided commentary and answered our questions during the drive. My tour included stops at four wineries: Yangarra, Wirra Wirra, D’Arenberg (along with a visit to the cube and exceptional Salvadore Dali Exhibit) and Samuel’s Gorge. All of the hosts were excellent and explained their process and the nuances of each of their wines. A fantastic day! Thank you! Lorraine GWritten 16 January 2024

New wineries we hadn't tried before and a couple of old favourites. A great lunch. He is both knowledgeable and good company. It really was a superb way to see the area.Written 21 July 2023

- yongkhoong0 contributionsBest Private Wine ToursWe spent a highly enjoyable three days touring Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale and Adelaide Hills with Matthew, Paul and Chris. All three were knowledgeable, exceedingly accommodating and friendly, going out of the way to ensure we were well taken care of. Matthew's recommendation of restaurants was very good, and we were fortunate to be able to taste some of the best foods in Adelaide in addition to the fine wines at the wineries we visited.Written 21 February 2023
- alcdn0 contributionsTwo very engaging days touring Barossa and McLaren ValeWhile escaping the cold in Canada, my husband and I toured both Barossa and McLaren Vale regions with Small Batch Wine Tours. Matthew, Paul and Chris shared great stories about the wines, vineyards, regions, history, viticulture and geology .... Anything we asked about, they had the answer and were most keen to share as much information as you'd like. They tailored our days with vineyards we requested which was greatly appreciated. Since returning home, it has been exciting to wander through the wine shops, to see labels from places we visited and to actually find some of our favorite wines from those days touring with Small Batch. A 5 star rating from us with sincere thanks to all of you for such informative and engaging days.Written 28 December 2022

- Tim G0 contributionsFaultlessWe have just returned from a wonderful day in the Adelaide Hills with our guide, Paul. He was marvellous company, his Mercedes van was very comfortable, and Small Batch arranged 4 stops during the day where we enjoyed fine wine, cheese, chocolate etc and were treated like royalty. Worth every cent. Thanks Paul for a great day.Written 9 December 2022
- 125iank0 contributionsAn Exceptional Day OutWhat a wonderful day! We we’re staying in Barossa Valley for a couple of days and had the good fortune to have booked a wine tour with Small Batch Wine Tours. Pick up was punctual and although there could have been up to six people on the tour we struck lucky that nobody else had booked the same day (surprisingly). Our driver, Paul, was excellent. He had a superb knowledge of wines and vineyards as well as an exceptional knowledge of local history which made our day so much more pleasurable. We visited four cellar doors and had lunch at Harvest Kitchen which was also a delight. If you’re going to book a wine trip locally I’d highly recommend booking with Small Batch Wine Tours.Written 6 December 2022

Being interested in enotourism and having visited many wineries in various countries, I select wine tasting tours very carefully. Moreover, I wanted to make sure that the tour will be running as we were limited on time (the tour runs with minimum 2 people). Small Batch Wine Tours was the BEST choice I could have made. Due to low season, there were only two of us (my dad and myself) but we had an amazing day. Tom picked up us promptly and we drove to Barossa. We visited 2 wineries in the morning (Langmeil and David Franz Cellardoor) and 2 in the afternoon (Rockford Wines and Turkey Flat). The quality of wine was superb and we were happy to taste sparkling shiraz for the first time in life. Lunch was delicious with 3 course meal - very tasty and filling. What made this tour special was our guide and companion for the day - TOM. Tom was very knowledgeable and easy to talk to - we had plenty of questions (not only about wine but Australia in general) and Tom was patient in answering. After a couple of hours spent with Tom we felt as if we met an old friend. We fully recommend this tour to all who love wine of good quality, who wish to discover more and have a conversation with friendly passionate Aussie guide and who want to enjoy the moment without being rushed. Thank you Tom, thank you Batch Wine Tours :-)

Whenever my wife and I visit wine growing areas we can’t help but take a wine tour and our trip to Adelaide was no different.
Over the years we have learnt that the smaller tours with lunch offer a better experience as the organisers tend to select the smaller boutique wineries . This tour being no different.
We were joined by another couple from Switzerland so we were a linguistically mixed group. Our driver, of a very comfortable vehicle , kept us all entertained and informed throughout the day long tour
The 4 wineries we visited were small batch and all bar one have agents in the UK and Switzerland which we intend the contact upon our return home.
2 tastings in the morning followed by 2 in the afternoon demand lunch. The chosen venue was excellent and we all enjoyed the ‘ chef’s selection’ together with the obligatory glass of wine.
We were surprised at the range of wines produced in Barossa , not just Shiraz , so had an enjoyable and informative day and would recommend this tour

Thanks for the informative review of Small Batch Wine Tours, Geoff! You are so right, after adding in the price of tasting fees and an outstanding lunch with wine, what you end up paying with us versus the cheaper tours really isn't that much at all.
The big difference, as you mentioned, is the much higher quality experience, vastly better wines, more personalisation and attention to detail. So many people that tour with us and also a cheaper tour business quickly regret choosing the cheaper option and scramble to cancel them without losing out, and try squeezing in another day with Small Batch Wine Tours at the last minute.

This was the second time that we have experienced a Small Batch Wine Tour, and it was a fabulous day in the Barossa Valley.
Matt’s knowledge of the area and wine is outstanding, but more importantly, it’s his ability to fine tune the days offering with what we the customer was after.
Specifically, Russell and I were interested in boutique wineries with a point of difference. Matt knows the area and he knows the producers so the experience is so much more than just wine tasting.
We had a wonderful day, including a delicious lunch at Fino.
If we come to Adelaide again, we would not hesitate to book with Small Batch wine Tours.

What a pleasure having you both onboard Margot, and thanks very much for the fantastic review.
Lunch at FINO is actually part of the private Barossa tour packages available on our website, and that's the experience you were on this time around. The flexibility of privately touring meant we could really focus exactly on giving you what you wanted. Meeting the winemakers, biodynamic producers, obscure varietals and techniques - you get a whole lot more bang for your buck on a private tour!
Looking forward to having you back again next year :D
PS: Russell's passion for the tennis prompted me to buy an impromptu ticket to the Australian Open this weekend!

We booked a micro-group tour expecting personalized service tailored to the group, but unfortunately, the experience fell short. The driver was pushy, talked excessively, and seemed unable to read the group’s dynamic. Instead of a unique and memorable experience, we were taken to four wineries that felt obscure and underwhelming. At $350 per head, we expected so much more—especially a thoughtful itinerary and a more refined approach. In hindsight, we would have achieved much more with a self-drive experience.

Hi Ryan,
Thanks for taking the time to leave us some feedback.
You booked a shared group wine tour advertised as visiting boutique producers with a strong focus on quality wine, variety of wine, and an engaging experience.
Your first stop was Hayes Family Wines - 100% estate-grown, organic, and largely biodynamic. Your group was there exclusively before opening trying a lighter shade of wine to the typically strong Barossan beasts. To contrast this, your next winery was Langmeil, home to powerful reds and the oldest living Shiraz vineyard in the world.
After a specially curated chef's menu lunch at one of the hottest venues in the Barossa, you then went to meet with a winemaker, again exclusively, in his winery surrounded by barrels. This winemaker was crowned James Halliday's Best Winemaker for 2021, and "one of the very best producers in the Barossa Valley, and indeed one of Australia's best wine producers." To end the day, you went to yet another exclusive by-appointment-only winery owned by the ex-head of grape growing at Penfolds, with wines made by the ex-second in charge at Penfolds. Their pedigree is without peer and their wines show it.
I was personally excited for this itinerary, one of the best we had put together in a while. We had you engaging with boutique winemakers and growers, learning from the people who grow and make some of the best wines in Australia, tasting various styles of wine the region is famous for, and enjoying a fabulous restaurant lunch. Surely by anyone’s standards, this is a well thought-out and refined itinerary.
Your guide tells me you were sorely nursing hangovers in the morning when he picked you up, and you were still trying to sleep them off on the drive up. This may be why you found your guide to be "talking excessively" and "unable to read the groups dynamic" when he was actually doing his job for the other paying guests on tour. These guests were engaging enthusiastically with Paul, and found his dialogue and winery choices to be impeccable.
You may have found him to be “pushy” since you lied to him in saying you wanted to get snacks and sodas for the drive home, but instead you snuck over to the pub and illegally snuck beers into the car to drink on the way home. This was in direct contradiction to your guide’s express instructions and to our company policy and license. Had I been driving I would have rightfully taken you straight to the police station so they could deal with you, and the rest of the group could continue enjoying their day. My guides have now been firmly told that this is strictly the policy should we have to deal with unruly and obnoxious customers in future.
It is clear now after hearing the feedback from my guide and looking at your initial requests to visit a brewery that this tour was never the right choice for you, but that is your decision to make. Most customers take the time to read the messaging on our website, on TripAdvisor, and in the hundreds of 5-star reviews we have received for our tours, to support their decision to choose Small Batch Wine Tours to provide a thoughtful, refined, and luxurious day touring South Australia’s wine country.

We had an excellent day in the Barossa Valley with Tom as our guide, who was very informative about the local area as well as the wine producers. All four of the cellar doors tasting sessions we had were excellent, showcasing a great selection of wines and giving very good information about each wine. Lunch was also excellent at Jacobs Creek winery! Thoroughly recommend this trip as being a small group you get a very personal touch and our fellow travellers were great fun too!

Hi Stephanie,
Great to hear you enjoyed yourselves with our newest guide Tom. He's been drinking South Australian wines for about as long as I've been alive, so he knows a thing or two!
One of our restaurant partners Harvest Kitchen recently moved into their new home at the Jacobs Creek cellar door. Very happy to hear the food is just as good, and I know the boutique (tiny production) wineries they feature by the glass would be a perfect accompaniment.
Thanks very much for the feedback!

The small batch wine tour of Mclaren Vale, is one I recommend. Paul our fantastic guide was very knowledgeable of the history of Adelaide and the wine industry. He took great care to make sure our days was enjoyable and the style of wine we loved. We had a small group of 4 as Small Batched Wine Tour specialize in small groups and not mainstream wineries. We visited 4 wineries from Gemtree Wineries who specialize in organic and biodynamic that was a very interesting science lesson, Lino Rambel wines are hand-made with an emphasis on fruit character being the star of the show, lunch at Salopian was exceptional and this also included a glass of your choice of drink, Oliver’s Taranga Vineyard where we tasted besides great wine olive oil with fresh baked bread and last Kay Brothers with amazing views and wines. That’s the beauty of these yours as Paul asked what style of wine, we enjoy drinking. Our pick of the day was Kay Brother, which we would have never discovered. As the price was $300 dollars each this did include all the tasting at each winery and lunch, transport from Adelaide and back. Totally recommend this tour.

The tour guide was excellent. His knowledge of wine, wine-making, and the area near Adelaide was great. He kept us on schedule without making us feel rushed. The vineyards we visited were mainly smaller ones which means the service was more personalized. There were 4 of us traveling together and 1 more person added to our group. The low number of people also allowed the tour guide and vineyards to gear the day towards our interests.
Lunch was a "shared menu" which gave us a nice variety of food to sample. The day was a great one.

I was collected from my hotel and taken on a tour of the Barossa valley, we visited four smaller family owned wineries. The tasting rooms were all very well presented and the staff passionate about their wines. We tried an interesting range over the day and I learnt a lot about wine! The our tour guide Paul was a great source of information on the history of the Barossa and all things wine. Lunch was delicious and plentiful. Great Day, Highly recommended.

Our tour through the Barossa was exactly what we had hoped for: a small group (just 4 in total), with a mix of places highlighting different styles. We weren't rushed at all, yet managed to stop at 4 wineries plus lunch. Matthew asked a lot of questions up front to plan out the stops, and listened to what we were enjoying throughout the day, ready to adjust the plan if needed. Even within each visit, he would guide us to try the wines he thought we would like most, and he was always right.
It was great to tour with someone who really knows his wine, which made for a more educational day. We were confident that Matthew was taking us to great places, a mix of large and small, and by the end of the day he set us up for recommendations for Day 2 in the Barossa on our own. That advice in itself was a huge help.
We definitely recommend for those hoping to learn more, received personalized recommendations, and have great wine talk through the day.
