Once at the protected sites at the Coral Cays, nature activities will include snorkelling over the pristine coral reef with a qualified marine biologist offering reef interpretation on a guided snorkel tour. A glass bottom boat coral viewing tour is also on offer. Premium reef sites showcase abundant marine life, including encounters with turtles and an amazing display of giant clam gardens, beautiful corals and a wide variety of fish. We took the Sailaway Mackay Cay Snorkelling Tour. We had perfect weather on the day out. The crew onboard were professional and friendly. Special mention for Maddie, Moby and James.

Moby provided us with very personalised service and made a non-confident swimmer very comfortable snorkelling around the sea. She even gave us a personalised coral reef tour! All the crew onboard were very helpful and placed the safety of all guests a priority while we were snorkelling at the reef.

The tour included some time at the Mackay Sand Cay. We really enjoyed our brief time at Mackay Sand Cay via the glass bottom boat. James was very patient with helping guests to photographically capture the special moment.

Maddie even helped us organise a loan optical mask (for the rest of our Port Douglas trip) as mine was smashed by the hotel housekeeping staff.

The marine life around Mackay Cay was splendid and the clam garden was magnificent! It was an experience not to be missed.

Sailaway provided high quality snorkelling equipment and gear. The yacht was comfortable and gentle.

Service: Excellent
Cabin Ambience: Good
Food: Average
Value: Very Good (this tour was on promotion at our time of booking and included a sunset sailing cruise - please see separate review)
Overall Experience: Very Good

Overall, we would highly recommend Sailaway Mackay Cay Snorkelling Tour.

Our experience was an eventful one but in no way a bad one! When we first went out the boat had some technical issues and we had to return to shore to refuel. This put a delay on the whole day. (Staff assured us that this is a rare occasion) and we were safe the entire time. The staff were amazing about this, we were given the option of rebooking for another day or staying on the boat with less snorkeling time. We decided to rebook for a few days later. We were given free drinks for the issue and also given a complimentary sunset cruise. The staff were amazing on both days, making sure everyone was okay and providing info on the day. The reef itself was incredible as expected. Highly recommend using the pool noodles when snorkelling, I am a pretty strong swimmer but it just made it so easy and relaxing. Lunch was beautiful and fresh. Highly recommend using sailaway for your water adventures!

I along with my mum, brother and three children aged 8, 6, 2 all booked a sailing and snorkelling tour of the outer reef. We booked a full-day tour that also included a glass-bottom boat trip to a small sandy key. This trip was fantastic we had so much time to snorkel and explore the water we saw huge sea turtles, sharks and an array of tropical fish. we were shown a video before had full of dos and don't while in the reef. All of the staff and instructors were very helpful and patient.
The food on the boat was fantastic and there was plenty. The staff were so patient with my children even pointing out blue starfish to interest the children.
This trip was more expensive than some we had looked at but I truly believe it was worth it

This is my family's first time snorkelling the outer reef. The magnificent Great Barrier Reef is a sight to behold!! What made this trip extra special was the Sailaway crew that made us all feel safe and informed.

From the beginning to end, we could not fault the service. We met Steve, the owner, as we were checking in and he sounded so passionate about these tours. On board we had Jazz as the skipper along with the rest of the crew - Kai, Louisa and Guy.

My mother who is 69 and so nervous the first time thoroughly enjoyed the snorkelling. I was personally anxious too at the beginning but I had the wonderful experience of swimming with Louisa, Kai and Guy who were all Super!! Louisa in particular when I was snorkelling with her answered the many questions I had about the marine life we saw. She was absolutely knowledgeable. The crew absolutely cared so much that everyone enjoyed the experience including my mother who was a poor swimmer.

If I were to put half a point off from 5 stars, it will be only because we missed out on heading to Mackay Cay because the small glass-bottom boat had an issue.

All in all a great day!! So glad I trusted the recommendation of the staff at Mowbray By The Sea.

We had the best snorkelling trip! We saw turtles, a reef shark, a giant moray eel and beautiful coral and fish. The staff were friendly and helpful and the food was delish. Most of the staff are also marine biologists, so they could explain what you were seeing in the reef. Definitely worth the little bit of extra money to be with a smaller group so you got more time snorkelling less time lining up to get your gear. The photo op on the sand island was also really cool.

We spent a wonderful day travelling on a catamaran from Port Douglas to the Outer Reef. There were 2 opportunities to snorkel for an hour each time, a visit via glass bottom boat to a sand cay as well as a tasty lunch, snacks and beverages. A marine biologist spoke at length about the reef. This slick operation provided by a friendly, helpful crew catered to all our needs for the day. We saw turtles, stingrays, reef sharks and lots of beautiful tropical fish. As a nervous first time snorkeler I felt safe and in good hands.

This was an excellent choice and we had a fabulous day on the outer reef snorkelling in and around the magnificent barrier reef. The boat and the crew were excellent and could not do enough for us. The snorkelling gear they supplied was new and in great condition. The wet suit and all the gear was sanitised properly and the morning tea and lunch was top class. Based on this experience we booked another 2 tours ( twilight cruise and Low Island snorkelling) and the service was excellent each time. Had the opportunity to compare this tour with another by a different operator and based on this we would select Sailaway in Port Douglas every time.
Book with confidence as you will not be disappointed.

The Outer Barrier Reef trip with Sailaway to Mackay Cay / Mackay Reef was the best reef trip I've ever done. Over the past 25 years, I've been up to Cairns / Port Douglas 8 times and have done multiple trips with multiple providers to different parts of the reef and this was the best by far! The sandy cay pure paradise - stunningly beautiful and surrounded by turquoise water. The reefs we snorkelled in were healthy and undamaged by weather, with such a huge diversity of colourful fish species and colourful variety of coral. We were lucky with weather and visibility and got to swim with 2 turtles. Snorkelling equipment was high quality. Lots of sanitisers all across the ship and passenger numbers were limited - each group got to sit separately and socially distanced. Amazing trip and I hope to go back soon!

absolutely top day. left at 8am. it’s a couple of hours tom get out but the trip was really enjoyable due to a couple of factors. firstly the maximum number of people on board is capped and there was plenty of room to move around and spread out. secondly one of the crew was a marine biologist and gave a few really interesting talks to explain what we were going to see.
once we made it out to the reef we did some snorkeling. then did a trip out to the cay and then had time for some more snorkelling. we saw turtles and lots of different fish and coral. we spent about three - four hours in total there and had an excellent time.
trip back was enjoyable too - sat out the front in the splash zone and enjoyed the sun and company.
all crew members were super friendly and very professional. safety was at the top of their minds at all time.
all in all an amazing day and would recommend it 100%.

We couldn't fault our trip on Sailaway VII" a stunning 25m sailing vessel to the Outer Reef sailing along the coastline with views of the oldest rainforest in the world being the Daintree Rainforest. We past Snapper Island before heading out to the Outer Reef.
This was a perfect day as we invited friends to come along & celebrate Sat 29Feb Leap Year Day & about 12 of them took us up & decided to come & enjoy the day in the water for the full day enjoying Coral Cays of Mackay & Undine Reefs. We were the only ones out there (small group) with some other visitors from o/s and all of us enjoyed exclusive use of reef sites that are shallow & protected perfect for snorkeling. The colour of the Reef was spectacular compared to reports one reads in the media! We all enjoyed our trip back (some layed back in the fresh air having a snooze after such a great day) We all spoke about the fantastic day out on our way back to shore, the fantastic lunch & all the snorkelling at different locations. We had friends who were not so keen to swim but just enjoy the day out on the water on this splendid yacht reading & sipping a glass of champagne or just having a cuppa!
We were spoiled & the trip back to Port Douglas had us on the deck enjoying some fresh local fruit & a few more glasses of champers!
Could not fault the day nor the Sailaway tour & the Sailaway crew who kept us safe & they very much looked after us al! We shall be back!
Thank You for such a perfect day exploring the Great Barrier Reef!!
We shall tell many & we shall be back!! Regards M
