      Great, but….
First time to Great Barrier Reef and hotel recommended this place and trip. Crew were brilliant, very knowledgeable and informative. Takes a while to get out to the reef, then an hour snorkeling- the equipment is very good quality and new-looking. Then a nice lunch with salads, sliced chicken, roast beef, prawns and sauces. Then onto a sand cay for a visit, then another hour snorkeling at a different reef. Def do the 2nd session, it’s NOT just more of the same. Sadly our boat broke down on the way home, so we sat in the water half an hour while they tried to fix the sail. These things happen. Ok the negatives : no free drink from the fridge ( beer wine) included in the package. They do not display their prices and it’s $10 for a can of beer —ouch. And even when they tried fixing the boat while we all just waited, it would been good customer service to comp us a drink ! They lost a start for that. Book via your hotel, not direct, as Reception will probably get you a discount if they book it.

Beautiful tour of the Great Barrier Reef
This was such a great tour. Really relaxed vibes and stunning views from start to finish. Snorkelling was incredible. The abundance of beautiful fish was amazing! The coral has lost colour which is sad, but the guides showed us how they are trying to generate growth via the glass bottom boat. We were a small tour of around 14 people, so had lots of room on the boat. I noted that the boat can hold a lot more people which I think would have hindered my experience as you have to get changed on the boat and need all the space you can get wriggling in to your wetsuit. Lunch was delicious although I wouldn’t describe it as a seafood buffet…more just a general buffet lol. Staff were nice and knowledgeable, pointing out things whilst snorkelling such as the reef sharks and turtles. We had a great day, thank you!

Awesome day at McKay Corral Cay
Yesterday we went with Sailaway to Mackay reef. It was a full days outing and so enjoyable. The group was really small (17 passengers). We traveled on Sailaway VII which is a big spacious, luxurious catamaran. It was a sunny day with calm sea and little wind, so perfect conditions. McKay Cay is a small sandy bank ‘island’ surrounded by coral reef. It’s about 150 ft long and has absolutely nothing on it! The waters around are crystal clear. So picturesque! We set off at 07:45. Sailed 2 hours to McKay. We snorkelled from the boat for an hour then had a nice lunch on the boat. We then had opportunity to go on the Cay itself in a glass bottomed boat to spend a brief time there. Enough to get some glorious pictures. Then back to VII for another hours snorkelling at another nearby location. The reef was as so beautiful. Colourful with abundant sea life. Swam with a green sea turtle. Lots of giant clams! Then the 2 hour return. The are lots of areas to chill in or out on the boat. So the journey out and return passed quickly. Lovely views of coastline. The crew were all super friendly and helpful. There was a great talk on GBR by the on board marine biologist too. We had a simply fantastic day. Sailaway is a slick, professional company and I’d happily do it again (also went on the Sunset Cruise with them). Highly recommend this tour!

      Felt very safe
Fantastic experience doing the full day Low Isles snorkeling in mid-November. It was a great intro to snorkeling the GBR. The crew took excellent care of us, and I felt very safe. We brought our own stinger suits, masks, and snorkels, but they will provide them (along with fins). The sailboat was wonderful because there were no diesel fumes other than during docking. The water was a comfortable temperature. A bit murky but we saw lots of colorful fish, a few sea turtles, and massive corals. Highly recommend Sailaway.

      Inner reef dead
I have no complaints about the trip but be aware the coral is mostly dead. We did see turtles and reef sharks and beautiful fish as promised but note the absence of coral. The inner reefs of gbr are devastated and it was depressing. I was told it was the latest cyclone by the staff but was here four years ago and it was as dire - last time was told it was natural bleaching. From what i hear outer reef is still good as not impacted by urban and rural runoff so suggest you take the longer trip.

Great crew, great boat…..shame we didn’t do any proper sustainable sailing!!!
It was a fantastic day out, mainly because the crew were so professional, friendly, knowledgable and fun, and the catamaran was beautiful. It’s a great shame, however, that despite having hoisted full sail in a nice 10-15kt wind, both engines were kept running at high power whenever underway. That is not what I call a sustainable experience, and was not as relaxing as I’d hoped. The only place to escape the noise of the engines was on the foredeck. As a sailor myself I would have loved at least some pure sailing, and I’m sure others, who had perhaps never sailed before, would have absolutely loved the exhilarating experience of pure wind power. Please switch those engines off when there’s a bit of wind if you want to give a more enjoyable and sustainable experience and exhibit best practice and protect the environment, as stated in your brochure.

      Check your booking date
Please please please double check your booking date - an easy mistake to make a booking for the wrong day and the office at Sailaway will not change your booking or be flexible in any way. The crew on board did their jobs well but my whole experience was affected by the mistake that I made and the way the office handled it. Either be there or you’ll lose your $1000

Easy trip and professional company with great boat. Definitely recommend it to anyone.
We were kept informed of everything coming up at every step. The crew was always friendly and able to assist and accommodate all abilities throughout the sail. The waves were a bit rough on the way out, but the crew looked after everyone to ensure we made it to the island with no fuss. The snorkel and glass bottom boat trip was amazing. The coral is so close to the island that you don't have to go far to see the beautiful fish. We even were taken on a tour of the island and saw a turtle swim by in the shallows. The cruise home by sail was perfect and easy with the crew ensuring we were being looked after with snacks and drinks along the journey.

Spectacular Day out on the Reef 🐠☀️
A perfect day on the reef. The catamaran was a great size for the amount of guests on board, it felt like a day out with friends. The lunch was delicious and plentiful! The crew were very attentive, especially Conor who helped a lady snorkel for the first time. She was initially nervous about being in the water and was absolutely thrilled that he gave her the confidence to give it a try. The highlight of my day was when Conor led me to where a turtle was swimming amongst the coral. An amazing experience! The entire crew [Damien (Skipper) Erin, Peter,Diego & Conor] were friendly, enthusiastic and very respectful to all the guests swimming abilities. I would highly recommend Sailaway to anyone wanting to explore the reef.

Nice trip and snorkelling at Great Barrier Reef
It was a very nice tour where the crew take care of us, guided us in the sea and serving good lunch and afternoon tea incl drinks. Unfortunately was the water not as clear as I thought but that’s nothing they could be responsible for. Overall was it much better than I expected 👏🏼👏🏼👌🏻👌🏻

      Perfect day
We were picked up from our hotel and taken to the marina and quickly boarded the catamaran. It’s a barefoot cruise so they take your shoes before you walk on there were snacks and non-alcoholic beverages available as we made our way to the island. It was about an hour each direction on the boat and we had a very smooth ride and calm seas. Once we arrived, we did snorkeling first because the conditions were fantastic. After a short tutorial, we snorkeled with guides (equipment provided) for 45 minutes and saw several turtles, black tip, reef sharks, several types of tropical fish, giant clams, and lots of different types of coral. After re-boarding the catamaran, we had a couple minutes to dry off and transfer to a glass bottom boat for a very short ride to an island with a lighthouse - where a tour was offered. After about 30 minutes, we re-boarded the glass bottom boat back to the catamaran. Once we were underway, alcoholic drinks, and additional snack snacks were served and we headed back to the harbor during the sunset great views and smooth sailing. It was just the right amount of time for every activity.

Well worth every penny fantastic trip . It’s a must
Professionalism at its best from the moment we boarded. Captain Tom and his crew were so knowledgeable and their attention to detail and safety was excellent. About 25-30 on board nice size. Food was excellent, snorkelling supervision great plus a glass bottom board trip. Loads of reef vision.

Choose Sailaway, the other ones are just okay.
Amazing day out in the outer reef! I am VERY picky when it comes to choose a tour company, which is why I spent a day in advance just to figure out which of all the 100 companies doing tours to the outer reef, I should choose. I hesitated as they run a sailing catamaran which takes a bit longer time to get out to the snorkling spot but it was worth every minute. Service and staff were top notch, food was great, snorkling site.. just us! It is like a five star hotel compared to the others. Yes, I can compare as I did go for another one the day after as it suited my schedule. It was a half day tour to Lower isle. That company (does not matter which one because they all have the same standard and prices) was not bad at all but just average good. Sailaway cost approx. 20 AUD more than the others for a full day tour, but worth every AUD. / Anders from Sweden

Our group of 4 were highly disappointed by this sunset cruise & felt like we wasted our money. Admittedly nature was against us & the sunset was ruined by cloud cover which we understand cannot be helped, and also there was no wind so we couldn’t sail which also couldn’t be helped. So all we did was motor out of the marina & then they turned the engine off & we just sat in one spot for the next hour doing nothing. If there was no wind they should have used the engine to cruise out or up a bit further so we could have at least seen a bit more of the coast instead of just bobbing around doing nothing. The staff barely interacted with the passengers apart from the initial welcome & then handing out the one drink per person that was included, there was no acknowledgement of the lack of sunset or wind so we were left just sitting there doing nothing, until they started the engine & took us the the 10 minutes back to the marina. It was literally a waste of an hour & a half (& not to mention a waste of $75 each!) & I wouldn’t recommend this cruise because if nature isn’t on your side & there is no sunset & no wind then what’s the point? It’s not like you even get cruise around to see any of the coast.

During our Honeymoon my wife and I booked the Half Day Sunset Cruise at a cost of $600 based on the information provided on the Sailaway website being " Explore the island during the quiet time of day with a guided snorkel tour by a marine biologist, over the beautiful coral gardens and swim with turtles in their natural habitat. Continue to enjoy your afternoon on the glass bottom boat with an interesting reef talk by our skipper and join our experienced guide to explore the history and nature of Low Isles with an Island Heritage Walk. We serve a delicious light lunch, afternoon tea and a selection of canapés. Beverages are also included to top off the day and provide 1st class service - Our focus is on 1st class service, small numbers of guests " (copied from website) The actual cruise was 21 people with not enough seating for all on board and once underway we were informed that you could Snorkel or take the glass bottom boat NOT BOTH! To get anything to eat or drink you had to squeeze your way into the cabin, and at no time did the staff offer food or drinks, it was fend for yourself from start to finish. The glass bottom boat was filthy with water sloshing around the inside of the glass panel with your seat being the steel rail on the side of the tiny aluminum boat. A terrible waste of our time and money!

I’ve been on a few sunset sails. This one started off nicely, easy check in, complimentary drink and hand food. Once the trip began however the water was very choppy and everyone on the front deck got splashed and wet. I think we were all waiting for the boat to come to a stand-still so we could catch a break from wind and water sprays but the stand-still never came! My partner and I tried to make the most of it but we definitely came off soaking wet 😂 I would recommend that in future, if the water is choppier than normal, that the boat should spend a little more time in the stiller water at the start or end of the trip so the passengers can actually enjoy the sunset ❤️ Or that if the organisers know the water is gonna be choppy, send an email out beforehand so everyone who wore their nice dresses and skirts knows that they’re gonna get wrecked (we saw a couple of people beside us get their nice clothes soaked.)

We have been to PD many times and really enjoyed the Sunset Cruise. It's a great opportunity to relax, breathe in the fresh salty air, enjoy a drink and good company whilst sailing around the calm waters off PD. But this time round it was anything but enjoyable. There was 28-29 knot winds and waves that looked to be around 3m high. No one could sit out front of the boat (without being completely drenched and thrown around) and no one could sit inside for fear of becoming seasick. So everyone scampered to the rear of the boat but there was limited seating options for the 50 people on board to use. Many were forced to sit (and get drenched) along the back row, some braved the side deck, hanging onto the railing for dear life and others braced themselves against the stair rails or whatever else they could get a good grip on. For a solid 60mins we rocked from side to side and up and down. No one moved. No one relaxed. A brave few continued to drink (they at least had their hands free, being in a seat) but most abstained. People were clearly NOT enjoying themselves (one girl was sick) and we couldn’t wait to get back into the sheltered waters of the inlet. This so called “sailing experience” could be likened to a Sydney to Hobart experience – only for the serious sailor! We had friends who did this cruise the day before us – and experienced exactly the same conditions. Three people on their cruise were sick. We were only told once aboard the yacht that things might get a “little rough”. No one was given the option to leave and we were never told just how rough and uncomfortable the trip would be. I’ve never been so disappointed in a cruise, and I survived it better than many other older people on board. I think it was quite irresponsible of the company to proceed. They could have chosen to stay in the calmer protected waters of the inlet, and just puttered around there for 90mins, and I think everyone would have been happy with that. Next time I consider going on this cruise I will not trust Sailaway to make the call – I’ll be personally checking the local wind and wave report.
The only positive I will mention, is that the 2 female crew members did a great job in trying to make everyone feel safe and comfortable.
Sailaway - please consider your customers next time - and do the right thing by them.

Very average cruise. We paid $75 and got the complimentary drink and snacks but there was a limited supply and it was all pretty much gone in the first 5mins and there was only a small group of people on board. The snacks provided were very average and you could tell they had done the bare minimum. The weather was dreadful which was obviously out of the control of the hosts but it was advertised as a Sunset Cruise which we would of rather of had our money returned instead of it going ahead in the wet weather. Hosts were lovely but I would not recommend especially for that price.

My husband and I did this cruise as a Birthday gift for him. We could not have asked for a more perfect time. The two crew members were fantastic, a welcome drink on arrival and finger food. An hour and a half was a perfect amount of time to experience sailing on the water and watching the sun set.

A beautiful way to end the day, whilst no sun setting that evening due to being overcast, the cruise was awesome. Joel and the crew were first class, very informative and lots of fun! The catamaran was very spacious, there was 45 passengers on board and lots of space for everyone to sit down and fully relax! Great music playing, canapés provided with first drink free of charge. The whole 90 minutes was relaxing and enjoyable- full of information and something I’d recommend doing!

Great little sail. Skipper Joel, and his crew were fantastic. Full of information, and happy to chat and engage with passengers sharing details about the area and the vessel. Only problem was 90 minutes felt a little short, and you rarely get to see the sunset over the cloud cover in the hills. Still well worth it for a peaceful cruise.

We absolutely loved this experience. The crew was exceptional and they provided great service. The view back to the mainland was spectacular and being on the water and watching the sunset was amazing. Remember to dress for the possibility of windy conditions and you will be asked to take your shoes off before boarding. Totally recommend this as it is also great value.

Been going to Port Douglas for the past 3 years. This was our first Sunset Cruise & experience with Sailaway Cruises. We booked for a Saturday night and couldn't have picked a better night to go. It was a beautiful day, no wind & calm seas. Crew were effecient and recieved a very funny but great safety talk from the crewman (sorry forgotten his name). Sailed out about 3-5 kms from Port Douglas and then drifted for some 20 -30 minutes while the sun was going down. My wife & I took some lovely shots. Snack/nibblies provided with first drink free and payment required after that. Smallish group of about 45 people which was just enough with plenty of room to walk around. Thoroughly enjoyed our evening and had great interaction with all the staff from purchase to crew. Would recommend and do another in the future.
