About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- carmi20 contributionsfind a better place to spend your moneynot worth it. the trip is about 45 minutes one way. once you get there, you either do the glassboat, or snorkel with provided equipment. glassboat (wife) - only 30 minutes, some fish and some coral, but too short, and a lot of the reef is dead. snorkel - the swimming beach about 100m offshore has little areas of live reef. you got to swim quite a bit to locate those areas - which are nice but few. so this was ok, but not more. overall, this is not worth 110aud pp that we paid. maybe Fitzroy Island, but we didn't visit there.Written 19 March 2025
- muazselims0 contributionsGreat team! wont disappoint! green island was lovely.Really nice experience, did a tour with a marine biologist. very friendly and knowledgeable. helped us when we missed our glass bottom tour. got us on the next one instead. they show presentations of history of the island and what to expect and also offer several options of things you can do on the island when you are there. Although it was jellyfish season (trip was in 2nd of March) with the body suits we had no trouble. but the current brought some jellyfish and led to other fish swimming away from our diving spot so maybe go at a better season lol.Written 9 March 2025
- john S0 contributionsNot a great experience. Look elsewhere.Big Dissapointment No Fish. The ferry ride was 50 minutes.I snorkled off the coast of the island but did not see but 1 fish. Very dissappointing. The glass bottom boat was not that good eithher. Spend your money on something else.Written 18 February 2025
- FlyerDA400 contributionsUnderwhelming snorkeling and reefThe tour company is fine. Nice boat and so on. The problem is the reef conditions are very poor due to coral bleaching which is a worldwide issue. See the reef while you can because it will only get worse. Thought the underwater safari option would provide better quality reef since it is in deeper water with no foot stomping tourists, but it was the same. But I did see a turtle.Written 30 January 2025
- Abhaya S0 contributionsMarvellous Green Island tripItinerary was well planned. We had a great time under the green island canopy. Went on glass bottom boat and semi submarine. With the bright sun light and clear water the underwater experience was amazing. Food was great at the buffet in big cat vessel.Written 17 January 2025
- KazzaB19790 contributionsAmazing trip we will be backWe loved it all, family of 5 with two teens and a four year old. The staff on the island are all so lovely and helpful. Facilities are great, plenty of toilets and drinks/ snacks. Snorkeling from the beach we saw loads of fish, sting rays and a baby shark. Some coral was also seen. Water is so clear and warm, suits are provided in case of jelly fish but we didn’t see any the whole time we were there. Glass bottom boat tour was fantastic for our youngest daughter who could quite get the snorkeling thing. We saw turtles and so many fish. The boat guide was super friendly. We also took the plunge and did scuba dive (first timers) it was absolutely stunning, our instructors Eason and Emma are so professional and attentive I couldn’t recommend them more highly they are so passionate and we all felt so safe in their hands. We even spotted a turtle and their photographer got photos of us with the turtle. Memories to last a lifetime. Could easily spend more than a day here would love to come back and stay on the island next time.Written 16 January 2025
- annwoodward0 contributionsLovely day trip to the reef great to have the island as a base for the dayWe travelled in January with 2 teenagers and snorkelled on the reef while not as good as quicksilver from port Douglas it was priced accordingly. Having a nice stable base on the island was great, toilets, showers, cafes and even a swimming pool. Stinger suits were a must as in Jan as lots of stingers around we snorkelled out as far as you could but had most rewards int he shallows with 3 separate turtles. Even saw turtles from the jetty. All up a great day out.Written 11 January 2025
- violyel0 contributionsFull day tour.Good experience.Good visit to Green Island. We booked the bus pick up and drop service from Palm Cove which was air-conditioned, on time, with barely any passengers and a lovely driver. Drop off in the morning was right at the jetty that had a cafe conveniently located. The boat is air-conditioned with an upper deck.Seating with tables is across both levels and there is complimentary tea/coffee at the start. Please don't forget to have Travacalm for motion sickness. There is fish feeding around 3.30 from the boat.We saw many Trevally and a shark then. Lunch was a buffet which can definitely improve in taste.Desserts and drinks can be purchased on the boat. The staff were all very friendly and helpful and lovely on tour as well as on the boat. We did the glass boat which was so good, saw a manta ray, turtle and many other fishes and coral. The smaller tour boat was breezy with lovely staff. The submersible on the other hand was a dreadful experience which made us feel sick to an extent.Cramped up with very little ventilation.Staff were good. Both tours last for half hour each. Green Island very little to do except take a walk around the scenic beach or the rainforest but beautiful nonetheless.Of course you can snorkel on your own with stinger suits and hire equipment at the boat. There is a good museum there with tribal art, where we saw a crocodile and turtle show at 1.20 pm for 28 dollars each. You can buy merch there too. We never ate at the island.Written 10 January 2025
- Jan S0 contributionsNot worth itCatamaran ride fine. Visibly of coral reef through glass/plexiglass bottom boat was poor. Tour guide was great. No tour guide included in cost of excursion. Etc.Written 26 December 2024
- stacysB8094MM0 contributionsProbably won't be back unfortunately.Whilst the views were amazing yes, The island smelled of rotting plants/fish whilst on the board walk and there wasn't nearly enough seating on hot busy days. We headed down to the beach and found it in rough shape sticks everywhere, feathers covered in bird Poop and the beach smelled of dead birds/bird Poop. The best thing of the trip was the glass boat tour and the semi Submarine although the semi Submarine glass does need cleaning it was a bit hard to see through the algae. We probably won't be back to Green Island and that's such a shame because when we came in 2016 it was much nicer.Written 20 November 2024
- M6197GSmichaelf0 contributionsA very special snorkeling experienceI had a wonderful day out that included snorkeling, the glass bottom boat tour, and I walked around Green Island which is just gorgeous. In particular my snorkeling guide, Daneka, was amazing. I was very unsure of my ability to cope in the ocean which she spotted immediately. Daneka then gave me a very special snorkeling experience that suited my ability much better. Because of her, I have very special memories of my day on the Reef, I saw more than I ever imagined I could. She also followed up with me and my husband later in the day to see how we were doing and make sure we continued to have a wonderful day. Thank you so much Daneka.Written 13 November 2024
- Joanne D0 contributionsSort of like being on a cruise ship tour - quantity over qualityOur tour was on a beautiful day so nature made the reef spectacular. This tour felt like we were being nickel and dimed all day. You have to choose either snorkel equipment or a 30 minute glass bottom boat tour. If you choose the glass bottom boat you then have a lot of day left with little to do. This is where they now charge you for snorkel equipment. This tour needs to be set up differently - every passenger should have the snorkel equipment included as well as the short glass bottom boat ride to introduce you to what to look for while you’re snorkeling. If they did this the day wouldn’t feel like a “cruise ship” type outing. It didn’t feel like there was anything above and beyond with this tourWritten 13 November 2024
- jessA3143TF0 contributionsUnlimited Snorkeling Off the Island! This experience was great in that you could do so much on your own. There is actually ample snorkel space right off the island, you can walk / swim in from shore and can spend as long as you want snorkeling. It was the first time I didn't feel rushed snorkeling! The boat was excellent. It was quite crowded which was annoying, but there were many areas and levels to sit. There was AC which was nice. The buffet lunch was great. The complimentary coffee, tea, and water was also excellent. Loved that the boat docked all day so we could go back and forth and enter it and leave it as we wanted. Loved that there was the resort we could use with showers and changing stations. We did think that we paid for snorkeling as that was in our charges; however I guess that was just the cost of the snorkel gear - all we needed was the Lycra suit, but we ended up paying the same amount as full gear. It was an additional I think 70-100$ if you wanted to go on an actual snorkel expedition off the island.Written 11 November 2024
- H4829MOcarolw0 contributionsAmazing day.We saw a lot of big and colorful fish, turtles munching on the reef grass, a black tipped reef shark and several stingrays. A great day.Written 23 October 2024
- kenc7530 contributionsGreat trip but expensiveThe crew were terrific but the prices on board were exhortion. The meal provided, as part of the ticket price, is delicious. My partner & I have Gluten free & they went all out to give us a delicious meal. It’s a trip that you need to do but if you’re on a budget take stuff with youWritten 23 October 2024

Great 1/2 day trip. Ran on time. Staff was courteous. We were so glad to find an option without snorkeling. Glass bottom boat was really fun and driver was super informative, funny jokes and all. There was a smell on the island that I’ve seen in other comments but it was only right in the area of the food. If you walked to far end of the beach, you couldn’t smell it. Super glad we took the day to see the GBR.

We couldn't have asked for a better trip. On our way up to Cairns our trip to Green Island was cancelled. On arrival we made our way to the Cairns booking terminal and found the Green Island desk. All I can say is that April, who was manning the desk, pulled out all the stops and rebooked us on the Fitzroy Island excursion, which was almost identical to the original trip. April went above and beyond our expectaions for customer service as we thought our trip had been wasted. Fitzroy island was truly magical. I would definitely book through Green Island again.

We went to Green Island 18 years ago and remembered snorkelling with sea turtles, but didn't think we would be lucky enough to experience it again... but we did! We spent a good 15 minutes under water following a turtle who was feeding on sea grass and it was a fabulous experience. I don't like cold water, but I was find to snorkel at Green Island - I think the water temp was about 26 degrees. Unfortunately the visibility was poor the day we were there, but it was still worthwhile. On the boat you can buy chips and soft drink. Everything on the island is very expensive, but you can take your own food and drink with you.

This excursion has almost no interest, the only interesting activity is the glass bottom boat (option to pay extra).
Otherwise you make an hour boat towards Green Island in the idea of finding yourself in the middle of the ocean on a small island preserved to snorkel but what a disappointment arrived on the spot!!
You disembark, at the end of the pontoon is a poorly maintained hotel complex littered with bird droppings with a pestilent smell🤢, None of the many employees would have the idea to throw water before the boats arrive🙄. You then go to the ticket office to collect your snorkeling equipment, normally free but not quite... if you need a children’s vest it’s for a fee, the same for a jellyfish suit...
On-site catering $12 per tray of fries to give you an idea.
The snorkeling activity is dependent on the tide, unfortunately for us the sea was low at the time, which forces you to walk on the reef to reach a deeper area, not obvious with the fins and very bad for the reef!
In short a factory for Asian tourist in search of sensation... European Avoid this Attraction

I am not usually a negative reviewer but thought it was important to give this feedback so others are aware of the experience we had.
My partner and I attended the afternoon transfer. We were advised to attend for boarding at 12:30 at a specific location. When it got to 12:50 (which was meant to be end of boarding, boat leaving at 1pm) there was still no boat. The boat did not arrive until about 1:15, at a different location and a totally different boat. There was no explanation or communication about this change, everyone was very confused.
We left late and had time on the island compromised, and were not provided the suits for snorking (presumably due to the different boat being used). The staff were lovely but I am not even sure they were big cat staff.
The island was low tide so snorkeling was not a vibe, you had to walk over sharp rocks to get to very very shallow poor snorkeling, it was not worth getting in the water and had we been advised about the low tide affecting snorkeling we would have saved money and not hired the equipment. I see on the website it has a note about low tide, but the date we went wasn’t listed as being affected, and nothing was advised on the boat/general email coms. I realised half way through trying to navigate the ‘rocks’ that it was actually partially emerged coral everyone was walking on, which is sharp and can be dangerous, and is also not good for the coral which should be protected, so I was a little mortified by this. Overall the island is fine, but in my opinion there are nicer beaches/walks up Port Douglas way, I would suggest save the cash for something else.

HI Mckka,
I am sorry to read of your disappointment. Would you mind emailing me your booking details so I can locate your bookings details and date of travel so this can be investigated please. I am presuming the Reef Rocket had mechanical issues and therefore an alternate boat replacement was used.
Regarding the stinger suits, these are only required between the months of Mid Sept through to April / Early May which is why they wouldn't have been allocated.
You are correct with regards to extreme low tide dates, as you mentioned we advertise these on our websites so our passengers can make an informed decision on the few days per year this happens, this is why I'd like to know your booking details so i can follow up as to why your travel date was not included.
Thanks for your kind comments about the crew and once again I am sorry to read of your disappointment. Please send your details to c.koscielny@reefunlimited.com and I'll look into these matters and respond to you asap.
Thanks for taking the time to write in.
Regards,
Chris

A lot of money for a 4-hour trip, of which almost 2 hours on a rough sea, barely 25 minutes on a glass-bottom boat with green glass. Saw some green fish and green corals. The rest of the time I walked around the island among a crowd of tourists and over the smelly droppings of the birds.
A negative on our tour in Australia. Not recommended.

Hi there,
Thank you for your review, and sorry to hear you did not enjoy Green Island. I understand it would have been disappointing to go on a not so favorable day, but unfortunately, we don't have a lot of control over the weather.
We hope you enjoyed the rest of your trip around Australia.

Staff on the boat trip were very friendly and professional making us feel safe and comfortable. We took the glass bottom boat option which was really interesting and our guide was very informative. Back on the jetty we were lucky enough to see a turtle and a reef shark! Excellent day out!

Truly enjoyed the experience! Quick boat ride out to Green Island and then plenty of time to snorkel to your hearts content! Honestly so beautiful and we got to see a lot of wildlife (sea turtle, sting ray and loads of beautiful fish). I feel like something that was misleading on the posting was that snorkel gear WAS NOT included, but was an option for an extra AUD $20 to rent. After we snorkeled for a bit we went and explored the forested path!

The half day trip with submarine is a good way to spend a half day, you get to see something of the reef. The choice of glass-bottomed boat or snorkelling is another 30 mins (a little longer on the latter if you are very well organised). My feeling is if that if you really want to snorkel you need more time. The croc museum on the island is worth a quick visit too. Most of the half day is the journey to/from Green Island.

My husband and I had a great half-day trip through Big Cat Green Island Reef Cruises in Cairns! The entire boarding/travel process was very easy, the crew were super helpful, and they made sure we had a safe trip over. The beaches at Green Island were beautiful, and we were glad we went in the morning because it started to get crowded around midday. We got to see some cool parts of the reef, a ton of fish, and just sit and enjoy the beautiful beach. There were also amenities on the island we could access if needed.
