About
At Cairns To Cooktown 4WD Tours, we offer fun, interesting and informative day tours in our purpose built air conditioned 4WD coach. Having crossed the mighty Daintree River on a vehicle ferry, we head North through the lush, ancient Daintree Rainforest where we enjoy a stroll on secluded Thornton Beach. We now tackle the iconic 4WD Bloomfield Track taking in the wonderful sights along the way, before we arrive at the histiric 1875 Lions Den Hotel for a well earned "coldy". Shortly after we arrive in the charming settlement of Cooktown and take in the amazing Endeavour River, Grassy Hill Lookout & of course Capatain James Cook's monument. We'll buy you a tasty pub lunch at the 1874 Cooktown Hotel, better known these days at The Top Pub, before we head to the best regional museum in Australia, The James Cook Museum, where we'll take care of your admission. Heading home via the inland, outback route we stop at the mysterious Black Mountains and the remote Palmer River Goldfields.

I had visited Cooktown before but my wife hadn't and was keen to see it, so coming across this tour in the Port Douglas Tourist Info centre was a welcome surprise.

Tour operator Dale picked us up at our hotel after starting the tour with the main group in Cairns and we headed north through the Daintree.

Sitting in the last row of seats it was quite the bucking bronco ride over the 4WD track so if you get the choice I'd suggest trying to bag a seat in the middle of the bus. And when you're ordering your lunch from the pub, I'd recommend you avoid the sausage patty hamburgers!

The trip covers a lot of territory in a day but Dale keeps it interesting with his entertaining commentary and keenness to make sure everyone has a good time.

In these Covid-blighted times it's hard for fledgling small businesses like his to keep going and he works hard to make it a success.

While it is a long day, it is an enjoyable one with plenty to see and make a note of for a possibly more leisurely return visit later.

You need to do this, no excuses. Dale developed this business from scratch and it ticks all the boxes. We had such a great day seeing everything there is to see between Cairns and Cooktown. 40 years ago I failed to get to Cooktown due to raging river waters in the Daintree, but Dale's expedition enabled me and others to tick-off a belated bucket-list activity. Its a fantastic day that includes driving the Bloomfield Track which was rugged and reminded me of my days in Iraq tearing around in Bushmaster infantry mobility vehicles. Dale is a great host and guide, with a great sense of humor. This trip is money well spent and marks a vital introduction to the Top End, for further exploration another time. Cooktown is paradise on Earth.

Oh Michael, thank you so much for your really detailed review of our wonderful day. I'm so pleased that you enjoyed your day & your comparison of your days on the frontline of Iraq are "gold"! Thank you so much & maybe we'll see you again, perhaps in Cooktown over a "coldy".

A full day of stunning, contrasting views (coastal, rainforest, rivers, creeks, mountains and settlements), diverse scenery, places and experiences.

We’ll always remember:
the two steep climbs on the Bloomfield Track and the first Bloomfield river view;
the Cooktown museum - we weren’t too bothered about visiting, but it’s an absolute gem, full of such amazing artefacts, very visual (not too much written/reading stuff!) and we’ll laid out;
the Daintree ferry crossing;
the coastal views between Palm Cove and Daintree;
the Grassy Hill lookout.

A perfect experience, thanks to our very competent, safe chauffeur and informative, interesting guide Dale. The 4wd vehicle has very clear, elevated and unobstructed viewing windows, it’s very cool, comfortable, clean and spacious.

Dale made sure we had plenty of water and good, clean loo stops and lunch was short but perfect in quality and quantity and in a great location - the old, original Cooktown Hotel.

We also appreciated the Black Mtn stop, the Lions Den and Palmer River Roadhouse refreshment stops and history, as well as the stunning ‘open’ Desailly Range views.

The tour is really great value for money and worth every dollar and we would do it again. We especially like the small group size.

What an amazing day trip! I visited Cooktown during a 4WD trip to Cape York about 26 years ago and loved my time in Cooktown and Home Rule. My husband didn't want to camp so he missed the trip so he was delighted to at last be able to visit Cooktown on Dale's 4WD Day Trip. This has to be the best value day trip we have ever done in our 50+ years together. Dale was a source of inspiration, information and humour. The trip was so well planned and the 4WD vehicle was very comfortable. Yes it was a long day but worth every minute of it. My husband now knows why I raved about The Lions Den Hotel and the great pub fare at The Top Pub in Cooktown. My husband said the sausages and mash was divine. I had the lambs fry and bacon with mash and peas and it was delicious! The views of the Endeavour River from the top of Grassy Hill look much the same as they would have done when James Cook stood in the same spot. The eerie Black Mountain range was so much larger than I remembered. There are definitely ghosts in the James Cook Museum! On coming down the staircase which was very rickety and very noisy I heard a different sound which made me look upwards; it was the sound you make when you run a stick along the bannisters. There was no one there but as I continued to walk down the stairs it happened again so I believe the ghosts are those of happy kids having fun! We had many comfort stops and photo stops along the way as there was so much breathtaking scenery to take in. The drive along the Bloomfield Track was great fun and Dale kept us going all day with snack bars and water. Our lunch and a drink at the Top Pub was included in our fare along with entrance to the James Cook Museum. If you are staying in Cairns or Port Douglas this is one 4WD trip not to miss; it's like going back in time to 1770. What was truly amazing is that Dale only had my husband and myself on our trip; any other operator would have cancelled.

We had a lovely day on our adventure from Cairns to Cooktown, exploring every type of landscape from rainforest, to river crossings, to beaches, to vast swathes of outback, and the spectacular Bloomfield Track, one of Queensland’s most scenic road trips. Along the way we visited the Lion’s Den Hotel, an iconic Aussie outback pub, for a beer and a photo, and the closed Aboriginal community of Wujal Wujal. The Bana Yirriji Art and Cultural Centre is open to visitors and is a must see. Artists from the Yalanji, Nyungkul and Jalunji clan groups showcase a range of contemporary art.
To cover such a distance in a day and navigate the many types of terrain, travelling with Dale is a must. He is knowledgeable, patient, well organised, and friendly. He knows the route well and makes the day great. His special 4WD bus makes what could be an arduous journey comfortable and easy. Thanks Dale

What a fantastic day! Our guide and driver Dale was very friendly, knowledgeable, entertaining and made our trip very special. Our tour from and through Cairns up to Cooktown via the Bloomfield track was amazing with spectacular scenery and some great stories on the way. It was great to stop at the Lions Den Hotel, a little piece of paradise in the middle of nowhere, staff were very friendly and the beer nice and cold. Cooktown is a beautiful spot and our tour through the town and museum was very interesting and enjoyable. Lunch at one of the local pubs was great! A stop at Black Mountain was well worth it on the way home and quite fascinating. Our trip home via the Palmer River Gold Fields and Roadhouse was also very interesting. All up a great day out with spectacular views and scenery combined with very interesting history. Thanks Dale!

The whole 10 hour day was extremely well planned and executed. Dale was a master of infotainment. He kept us moving to ensure we had time to do everything whilst not rushing us. We had time to explore, question and take photos. Whilst driving (and there was a lot of distance covered) he pointed out so many things of interest - and was knowledgeable about the history and local issues. And when there was nothing to be discussed we were in a comfortable silence. He has a good rapport with many of the people we encountered along the way which ensured we got quick and friendly service.

Dale, owner/operator of Cairns to Cooktown 4WD tour, offers a superb service to his customers. We did this tour on 29 September 2021, and were picked up from our accommodation in Pam Cove.
Nothing was too much trouble. Dale was very knowledgeable and provided commentary along the way. The trip up on the Bloomfield Track was easily handled by his 4WD specially built vehicle. Our fellow passengers were of similar age to us and everyone got along great. Would recommend this tour operator to everyone.

We cannot recommend this tour with Dale highly enough. His careful and skilled driving made this a memorable day out.
His local knowledge was terrific and made for an enjoyable day.
The stop at Thornton Beach was stunning and not to be missed. To walk along the beautiful white sandy beach and see the rainforest right on the edge of the sand was a feature.
Bloomfield track provided some expert 4WD driving by Dale. The creek crossings provided some beautiful scenery.
A beer at the quirky Lions Den was welcomed.
The drive around Cooktown was lovely and a delicious fish lunch at the Cooktown hotel was much appreciated.
The stop at Black Mountain provided a surprise.
Our last stop which provided spectacular scenery was Bob's Lookout at Desailly Range. Wow!
Although it was a long day, it was worth every minute.
Thanks Dale!!

What a great day, we had not done the Daintree 4WD Bloomfield track before but so glad we did it. This was a packed day from being picked up by Dale in his air conditioned mini bus at 6.30am from our hotel, Dale was so knowledgeable and an all round nice guy. With so many sights to see we headed up to Cooktown and enjoyed lunch at one of the original hotels, the Top Hotel, where we met with some interesting true Aussie characters. Visited the museum saw where Captain Cook landed then headed back via the Palmer River Goldfields. It was a long day but most enjoyable.
