- Laurapattinson20230 contributionsHot!Make sure you book your stinger suit before you travel. Spots in the shade are limited, and the only really shade on the beach means sitting on the dead coral . So 2 recommendations. If at all possible take some kinda pop up beach tent or umbrella and an extra towel to sit on as the dead coral can be a little uncomfortable 🤔 😉 the snorkeling is good (not great) but the boat staff are fab. Please note this can be a long day stuck in the sun, if go unprepared!Written 6 April 2023
- Jean G0 contributionsNice teamHad a blast doing the half day with my wife and 1 year old. Brooke was there to help with my nausea by providing me with some ginger tablets. Great to deal with her and the rest of the team.Written 16 March 2023

- 389glenne0 contributionsA good day....we had a good day. I want to give 3.5 stars... Started with a snake at the pub..then looked at the water to see a turtle swim past. Went to the white rock for some snorkelling...good between the rocks...but a pity the coral has been trampled. Some nice coral and fish around the rock. Went to nudey beach.....too much wind so it was swim only. Lunch from the boat was simple but fillling. More swimming. Didn't do any of the activities.....but a good day.Written 7 November 2022
- Christine c0 contributionsDefinitely worth a visit. We opted to do a half day tour leaving around 11 am and retiring on the 2 pm boat. In our case this was a mistake as it did not give us enough time to visit the turtle hospital and attend the information session, walk around a bit, visit Nudey beach and have a spot of lunch. The longer treks to the lighthouse and summit, along with the snorkelling option were not for us. Still it was a great experience. The boat trip there and back was excellent and despite some chop felt safe in that the crew were competent, professional and friendly. We also had the opportunity to purchase drinks and ice creams. Suggest before booking, check what activities are on offer, the times, then make the choice of a full or half day. Definitely worth a visit.Written 26 May 2021
- Warren T0 contributionsGreat half day tour.Just have to say WOW. What a great experience we had today. Sailed at 11am. Returned on the 2pm ferry. Enough time to check out the lighthouse and a swim at Nudey beach. Highlight was the crew onboard the boat today. Sunday 23/5/2021. What a happy/friendly crew. Acknowledgment of traditional owners was extra special. Keep up the brilliant work. Can’t recommend highly enough.Written 22 May 2021
- sydneylovestotravel0 contributionsHalf day trip not worth itAlthough the website promises 2h on the island it was past 12.30 when we arrived and so we only spent just over an hour on the island. (Left at 2pm). Couldn’t even extend our trip to return at 5pm as the boat was full.Written 6 April 2021
- Meredith F0 contributionsA great dayWell worth the trip. You can snorkel very safely by yourselves and see an array of fish and coral very close to the shore. Don’t bother paying for the snorkel tour , was very disappointing as the marine biologist only spoke about coral, we saw more species doing our own snorkel. Bar is good for a drink. We grabbed a sandwich at the general store for lunch. Ran out of time to do any of the walksWritten 14 January 2021
- david_mary-ann0 contributionsGreat day outWe took a trip out to Fitzroy Island for the day to do a bit of snorkelling on the beach. It was a bit rainy, but the water was warm. It was best at Nudey Beach.Written 21 July 2020
- MissFlavour0 contributionsA great trip to the stunning Fitzroy Island. The staff are lovely, all very professional and friendly. Safety tips covered well with a little humour which was a nice touch. Once arrived on Fitzroy Island it is really up to you to do what you like. The secret garden is a beautiful a tranquil walk. There is a restaurant there with average food, but the sweet potato fries were delicious. You can get your snorkle gear very easily. Highly recommend getting stinger suit to be safe and then you can snorkle at ease. The water is crystal clear and just near the shore, you will see some coral and beautiful coloured fish. The glass bottom boat was a great trip, the guide/driver Peter was very knowledgeable and informative. A great way to see a bit of the reef with some good information, which was easy to understand. Overall i would reccommend this tour. Less touristy than green island, which made a very peaceful and memorable day. Thank you!Written 29 February 2020
- andreaabradley0 contributionsGreat Day at Fitzroy Island w/ Raging Thunder. We had a wonderful day. Lots of good snorkeling - nice reefs toward the rocks, a lot of fish at Nudey beach. We enjoyed the turtle rehabilitation center. A little hike to Nudey beach - wish we made more time to spend there. What I liked about Raging Thunder are their times of departure and arrival. Very convenient for us. Also, their staff was extremely friendly with great service.Written 12 February 2020
- ruben d0 contributionsFitzroy Island - Great day outwe went to Fitzroy Island with the family for the first time. only 45min ferry trip from Cairns its a great option for families. Great place for swimming, snorkeling, Paddle boards and kayaks are on offer and full stinger suits. we also got to see baby reef sharks, plenty of fish and also some turtles. Also a must is the Glass bottom boat was great. staff were friendly and very helpful. Easy trip back from Fitzroy Island to Cairns Marina. had an amazing time, kids loved the paddle board experience.Written 29 January 2020
- LirazS2310 contributionsGreat experienceBeautiful place, the staff was very kind, excellent snorkeling gear and beach gear (kayaks and saps), good lunch, had a great timeWritten 27 January 2020
- Sam7530 contributionsit was okFitzroy island is a beautiful place for photos etc but we did need the full stinger suit, snorkelling near the pier was nice early on, saw some nice fish (and some jellyfish!). but as the day went on it got very choppy. We tried the standup paddle boards but it was a bit too rough to actually stand up, the kayaks were also included but we didn't use them.(you get 30 mins each time you hire them). We went for the 20 min walk to Nudey beach which was very pretty, its worth the walk, and there was some good snorkelling near the rocks. If i went again I would have snorkelled near the pier then had lunch and then gone to Nudey beach as you have to give all the gear back by 3pm. (we did everything then had lunch and were done by 230 pm (kids couldn't be bothered putting the stinger suits back on) and had to wait until 4pm for the boat. Don't really rate Foxy's, waited 40 mins for lunch as they lost the order and then it was under cooked. Also can't believe they actually have a guy guarding the toilets, they are just like park toilets. A tip The Cat is very hot inside so take a seat out the back in the shade, or upstairs in the sun with the breeze. (it had 1 aircon but really didn't work with 50 people inside). Would i go again? Yes but in winter. If you are tossing up between here and Green Island I would recommend Green Island we didn't need stinger suits there.Written 25 January 2020
- b0bz800 contributionsA fantastic family day out!We regularly visit Fitzroy Island as it is one of our favourite places for a family day out! The boat, food and staff are also fantastic and I can highly recommend a hike to the summit to take in the incredible views with a snorkel afterwards to cool off!Written 24 January 2020

The boat trip to Fitzroy Island was great despite very windy conditions. The crew were outstanding settling everyone in and giving advice on sea sickness and suggestions on taking motion sickness tablets etc… we hired snorkeling gear which was in good condition. I recommend trying on your gear quickly before you the vessel leaves cairns so you can swap if fins don’t fit or gear not right. They are a ferry service so they drop you off and leave so you need to know what your doing. There’s not a lot of time to swap things over. Highly organised, the crew friendly & professional. In regards to Fitzroy island, if you want to save some money bring food with you or you can buy from the cafe and gift shop. A relaxing day, lots to see. It’s a coral beach so if you have them wear surf booties or take runners. Very sharp on the feet. Great snorkeling. Highly recommend overall.

Booking was easy. Our boat got changed, and we got longer on the island for it. Communication regarding this was excellent. The boat was pleasant, clean, and staff helpful.
Once on the island, there aren't many amenities for day guests. There were three toilet cubicles for ladies and only beach showers. There is no seating on the beach, only sandbags which many have green ants. Day guests only have access to foxy's bar and Cafe. Which is expensive (2 meals = $60, no drinks). Most people sat at Foxys for a beach view, and there is a picnic table near the camping area for campers.
The walks are pleasant. Lighthouse and summit are challenging with steep inclines. The secret garden and nudes beach walks are easy. Nudes beach has no reef and can be windy to swim in. The beaches are clean, coral is semi alive, and there are turtles and a good number of reef fish.
The biggest issue is the lack of safety for day guests at the beach. We saw no signs for first aid areas. There are no life guards, and if you are at nudes beach and you have an accident or swimming issue, it's a trek over stairs and rocks to find a staff member to help.
I wouldn't recommend paying to see the turtle rehabilitation area. It's just a room with a turtle recovering, and the people giving talk only have superficial information. Which you could read off the board at the front of the centre. The glass bottom boat was good.

Fitzroy Island is a stunning place, we love to visit however I think the Day trip could be done so much better. We arrived before 9am and the Dive shop where you get your snorkel equipment didn't open until 9.15 and was so busy. It made for a lot of wasted time on the Island. We were booked in for a snorkel guided tour at 10, didn't leave until after 10.30 and included 45 minutes of snorkelling which was great, the coral and fish sighted was incredible. No-one advised us this would be late so we spent over 1.5 hours just waiting around when we could have been swimming. We were booked on 12.15 boat to Cairns so most of the time on Island was wasted which is disappointing as it's not a cheap trip when having the inclusions.

I would not recommend this trip. Most of the staff (apart from the marine biologist) I felt created an unwelcoming and unfriendly atmosphere from the beginning. This is advertised as a ‘tour’, but you are basically dumped on the island with little guidance from staff on what to do there, I had to find signs instead. I chose the glass bottom boat option which was very disappointing but this was mostly due to poor visibility in the water the whole day which made snorkelling extremely disappointing too, after 3 attempts I eventually gave up at seeing any sea life. The tour guide for the glass bottom boat seemed very uninterested in what he was talking about, and it only lasted 25 mins so seemed very overpriced. Despite this, the island itself was beautiful with great walks although there is not a whole lot to do there, food at foxys bar was good and friendly staff there. Maybe you would enjoy this trip better if you are with a group of people and have checked before going out that the visibility in the water is good, but I do not recommend for solo travellers, especially if you plan to snorkel by yourself because the current at nudey beach is strong and seemed dangerous.

Thanks for the feedback Lucy,
I am disappointed to read your comments about crew when we're congratulated often with regards to the service they provide.
We offer a ferry service to Fitzroy with the optional choice of joining snorkel tours, GBB tours and more. I do feel this is advertised very well via our website, brochures, digital communications guests receive before travel as well as the e boarding pass, communication from crew on board plus our crew members are available at the island should guests require assistance.
I am sorry the visibility didn't sound to great on the day you travelled and i am happy to read you enjoyed the island.
Thanks for writing in.
Regards,
Chris

First of all, I want to point out that Fitzroy Island is a fantastic island with beautiful nature and really good snorkeling.
However, this boat trip disappointed us greatly. When we arrived at the check-in location, the staff were incredibly slow and unprepared to receive guests. This also led to us and others almost missing the boat they had arranged.
The staff on the boat were arrogant and also slow. It was stated that it would be a fast boat and that the boat trip would only take 30 minutes. It's a lie. The boat sails slowly and the trip takes 60 minutes each way.
Fitzroy Island is cool but I can't recommend this boat company.

I don't even know how to start this since we got to the island, there was constant Nickel and diming of the day guests, which was how I visited. They wanted to charge us $10 for Wi-Fi at the hotel, which is free for people staying there at the resort, and then since it was raining hard during our visit and there was no point in staying for the rest of the day, my family and I wanted to get on an earlier ferry unfortunately since we had missed the lunchtime ferry our only option was to wait for our original 5:30 pm ferry unless we were willing to pay a whopping $51 per person to switch to another boat company. So we were stranded on the island in the rain all day, which was ridiculous. It's a shame because the island itself was lovely. I enjoyed the glass-bottom boat tour of the Great Barrier Reef, and the food was outstanding. The upcharge for wifi and the infrequent boat service ruined it for me.

Hi WValexd, Sorry to read of your disappointment. You could start by directing this to the company you actually travelled with and removing this from our thread.
a) We have no option for guests to add wifi at $10, we find most passengers can use their standard cellular data in most areas
b) We don't have a 1730 departure from the island, our last departure is 1600
c) Fitzroy Island Adventures does not charge it's passengers to swap a return time as long as we have availability, however I appreciate if you are swapping the return journey to a different operator , then of course you would have to pay, they are completely different companies.
Whilst it's great to read you enjoyed the island itself and the Glass bottom boat tour, I would very much appreciate you removing this from the Fitzroy island Adventures reviews as you did not travel with us.
Thanks and regards,
Chris

In 2 words don’t bother and save your money there are plenty of other top places to snorkel . The brochures do not give a true indication of what to expect . Did not see 1 fish in the murky water. The staff at the hire place had zero customer service skills and were quite off hand to say the least . There is only one place to eat the menu is less than ordinary be prepared to queue and then wait and wait and wait . The rain came after lunch so most people were sitting undercover . A coffee and cake would have gone down well but the coffee machine closes at 2.00 pm and the ferry returns to cairns at 5.00 pm . There is a constant queue to the 3 toilets as they double up as change room as well . We tried to look on the bright side and remain positive but it was a wasted day when we could have been doing another trip . Tourists are spending hard earned money to get there I’m wondering where the money is being spent certainly not on improving the place to bring it up to a reasonable standard !

Hi Elaine,
Thanks for your review and I am sorry to read of your disappointment.
We do feel our brochure that advertises our ferry service to and from the island represents and give a great indication of what Fitzroy island Adventures has to offer. We don't operate any of the facilities on the island such as hire place, restaurant, toilet facilities, our passengers receive snorkel hire on board our vessel before departure and our picnic lunches are served from the vessel.
Sorry you didn't see much marine life , Fitzroy has some great coral, turtles and abundance of fish species, I do understand that poor weather conditions can play a part in this though.
Thanks for your feedback, I will ask our operations team to pass on your comments to the resort regarding the facilities concerns you mention.
Regards,
Chris

Our original cruise was canceled with no formal notice AT ALL.
And we had to book another one to the Fitzroy land with Sunlover on the spot.
I had the full package plan which was 128 dollars, but we were informed that the glass bottom boat was canceled again when we went to the departing spot. What’s even worse, we were only refunded for 14.4 dollars for the cancellation.
Another thing about this spot is that you can barely see any sea life around the beach.
And the island was a resort, so most of the place was restricted to enter, leaving us only one place to have food and toilet. Could u guys imagine walking for 1.2km for a toilet which is the only available toilet for cruise visitors?
NOT RECOMMENDED

Do not do this tour! The ferry has seating inside, on top (in full sun no cover) and limited seating at the back. Inside is extremely hot and there is zero airflow. There is one aircon cooling the whole inside but you can't feel it unless you are standing right in front of it. I heard the skipper say to one of the other staff that the temp was nearly 40 degrees earlier. Seating was also very cramped with knees touching the barrier in front.
Don't do the half day! It's not enough time. You don't have time to do snorkelling/swimming, glass bottom boat and get food. It's just not possible.
Also, when we booked we were told that departure time from the Island was 3pm. It was actually 2pm so we had a whole hour less than we thought. We were told 3pm by the people we were booking through AND it says it on their brochure. False advertising!! Extremely disappointed.
FYI - Fitzroy island had great snorkelling but it's a coral beach so very hard to walk on.

Customer service wasn’t that great to engage with before or during the boat ride over. We were running 5 minutes late from traffic and when we called to let them know, the girl on the phone wanted to cancel us to a different day! When we arrived the boat was still there boarding some other late comers so I’m glad we didn’t listen to the girl over the phone and miss out on the day we paid for…
Fitzroy Island felt a bit overrated. The reef and water was beautiful, but going on the day trip meant that you were always with a lot if people. Pretty much everyone upon arrival went to either the cafe or Nudey Beach since they were the 2/4 things you could do. By 1pm myself and my partner had done everything that you could do and wished we could have caught an earlier ride home.
The glass boat, whilst a cool idea, was kind of a waste of time, we didn’t see much and from where we were sitting we could really see through the glass anyways. If I could go back I defs wouldn’t have paid the extra money for it! You would see everything better from snorkelling anyways…
Everyone spoke really highly of Fitzroy Island to me but honestly after being there, you can see everything you wanna see in half a day & also there’s some better Islands out there you could spend money day-tripping too!
