Great experience with an awesome crew!
Booked Ocean Free 1/17/24. Would highly recommend! Skipper Jan and crew Yanou and T were great. They were very helpful, informative, and friendly. Lots of sailing, snorkeling, eating, drinking, and island exploring. Saw turtles, fish, anemones, cucumbers, sharks, and multiple corals of course. Would definitely book Ocean Free again or also Ocean Freedom next time.

      A marvellous experience
This was the highlight of our visit, having earlier had a disappointing trip out to the reef with a big boat operator. The Ocen Free skipper Pascal and his crew could not have been more helpful, friendly and inclusive, great snorkelling, refreshments wonderful, sailing on this boat was a real treat, a very authentic experience not on any account to be missed. Thank you. Geoffrey Jordan Herefordshire UK

      Leave the turtles alone!
I’ve done a lot of snorkel trips. I enjoyed this vessel and I enjoyed the first snorkel spot we visited. The second site, the current was too strong and U got right back in the boat. I thought the crew was too relaxed on their safety briefing. They did not really go over how to keep your distance from the sea turtles. As a result, we had a sea turtle swim into our roped off area. Guests were touching it to take selfies. Guests were hanging on it while it was swimming away from them. Two crew members, one on the top deck in a red vest, were watching and not telling the ignorant guests to knock it off. It was disgusting. I felt horrible for the sea turtle. It left me with a very unfavorable opinion of this company.

Amazing diving experience with professional and friendly staffs
We had an awesome experience, me and my friend had one dive as we will have flight in the next day. Staffs are super friendly and caring. My friend went for an instructive dive and I dived with instructors. We both enjoy our diving experience, the instructors are professional and make the trip fun and relax, my friend told me she felt really blessed to dive with ocean freedom as a new-bee. And I believe she will dive more in the future. I had diving experience with another boat in 2016, but this is my best boart experience as an advanced open water diver. BTW, the food is amazing, have several rounds of fruits, cheese, and desert always fresh.

      Disappointing experience with RIP current
We had a RIP current experience on this snorkeling trip. Could not see any corals in the reef. The crew moved snorkeling from morning to afternoon but it did not help. They dropped us on Green island where there is nothing than a small beach with no waves - not enjoyable at all. In afternoon, we tried snorkeling but it did not work at all. The crew was helpful but they charge a lot for this trip so beware of weather conditions and reach out to your tour operator to find what they already know and reschedule your trip - not worth the money if you can not see the corals that you paid for to see.

      Crap tour
What a scam. Lunch was horrible and we spent a ton of time cycling through various people getting intro to scuba. Staff was ok to inattentive. Ocean free also way to slow. It’s a tarp.

Fabulous day tour to Barrier Reef and Green Island
Very happy that we booked this tour for yesterday. Lovely sailing boat with only 25 guests on board along with Matt and his crew: Alexa, Rose, Martin and one other gorgeous girl who’s name escapes me, each one friendly and helpful. Moored right at the reef! Trip to Green Island also! Cannot recommend this tour enough 10/10 😃 thanks for a fabulous day

      Excellent Experience
Excellent experience. Especially Yanu took good care of us. We mentioned that we are not strong swimmers and she stayed with us for the whole time we were in the water. The whole team is extremely nice and friendly. We were hesitant being vegetarian - but they overfed us starting from breakfast - there were pastries and fruit with coffee and tea. For lunch 3 kinds of salads. Snacks - cheese and crackers, fruit, cake - they served us every hour with a smile on their faces. Also complimentary wine (we didn't take it) I already told all my friends and colleagues about Ocean free tour - highly recommend it

      Amazing day!
Would highly recommend this tour! The staff were all very friendly and the limited number of passengers made it feel a much more personal and safe experience. Snorkelling spot was great, I even saw a turtle. Lunch and snacks were plentiful and yummy.

An experience of a lifetime.....20 years later!
Before I begin please note this is a review of an experience with Ocean Free that took place almost 20 years ago. At the time of my experience TripAdvisor did not exist. This review is a result of finding some amazing pictures and memories created by the amazing staff and crew at Ocean Free. While backpacking through Australia after amazing experiences at Blue Mountains, Uluru, Kata Tjuta, Kakadu National park I landed in Cairns with the express intent of visiting the barrier reef, fully knowing that I couldn't swim and would probably miss out on an amazing experience of a lifetime. However, while at a local youth hostel I was introduced to Ocean Free and their services, fully amazed at this possibility I nervously booked my experience. Best decision of my life, I experienced a day that I continue to reminisce about fondly even 20 years down the road. After nervously boarding the vessel in the morning I was met by an amazingly patient Danish lady named Hannah, she provided a thorough beginner dive guide with some timely jokes and additional information that proved to be so helpful while underwater. I had a couple of nervous moments before submerging but Hannah remained patient and encouraging throughout. Once underwater the experience was something that still brings back amazing memories today, Hannah was with me throughout the dive pointing out fish, reef, coral and helping me to take some amazing pictures. No one on the vessel knew I couldn't swim at the start of the day but upon coming out of the water everyone knew and let me know with a pat on the back! After 20 years my memories of Ocean Free and the experience I had that day something amazing and out of this world. I look forward to the day I return to Australia with my family so what we can ALL experience this amazing adventure together. As a worldwide event planner I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending Ocean Free to any group or individual. Thank you again for the experience of a lifetime.

      Great experience
Great excursion! Only 25 guest and 5 crew so no crowding and plenty of personal attention from the crew. Scuba lessons were offered for a very reasonable up charge. Snorkeling was well supervised. Captain and crew were ever present. Now the food was over the top as compared to any other tour we’ve been on.

My group had such an amazing trip! The crew were all knowledgeable, helpful, and efficient so we maximized our time enjoying the reef safely. I was the only certified diver in my group and my dive was amazing! I was so impressed with how the crew guided my friends on their introductory dives with ease. We did one dive, and then had the rest of the day to snorkel and explore Green Island. The lunch was great and there was complimentary wine and cheese on the way back. Everyone agrees this is the highlight of our trip, and a must do in Cairns! Book the small tour (25 people) if you can for an even more personal experience!

For anyone considering a GBR tour, as FNQ is doing it tough with low tourist numbers, I could not recommend these fabulous tour and crew members enough - this was spot on. Small boat numbers gave highly personal touch and attention, felt safe and cared for - just perfect.
Matt and Jen were amazing, calm and reassuring as scuba experience members - so professional. Ben and Liam were not only great conpany ( Liams humour an added perk) but so knowledgable about the reef and importance of maintaining eco friendly tours.
And the reef was looking fabulous too! Got to see and fulfill the turtle dream and Matt and Liam allayed shark fear of daughter which meant she did a dive ❤
Thanks a million guys, what a Team!!!!

My partner and I went on this tour on July 4, 2020. Each of our experiences was completely different, and not necessarily due to the tour company as much as sea motion sickness. So, our STRONG suggestion is, “Get the TravelCalm medicine they offer ($3 for 2 pills) or get your own in advance, period!” DO NOT WAVER. It makes a world of difference. I had the most amazing time, and enjoyed everything they promised and delivered. Upolu Cay was gorgeous. My partner, sadly, got sick and couldn’t enjoy.

Due to windy weather, they told us a day in advance that they couldn’t take us on the glass boat, so check company email and weather ahead of time. Cancellation is allowed 24 hrs in advance.

There was a little glitch during the tour, not the company’s fault, and we were generously offered a reimbursement, but since one of us enjoyed everything about the adventure, we accepted 50%.

Overall, a unique and beautiful experience with great food, equipment, just as promised, and staff taking care of us the entire time, including remarkable safety instructions for all levels.

With Travel Calm, and good weather, I highly recommend this tour company and Upolu Cay!

Thank you for your review. It was indeed a pleasure to have you both on board with us and great to hear that our crew looked after you and gave you a great day! .Thanks for the advice for future travelers. If anyone is prone to travel sickness we also recommend taking about 20 minutes before boarding the boat to be most effective . Make sure your partner does that for next time if a little windy 😊 – hope you enjoyed your onward journey and thanks again!

As a long time Cairns resident, a dive instructor and someone who works in the maritime industry, these guys are by FAR the best company to experience a day out on the reef with. From the moment you book your trip and step onboard the boat you are made to feel welcome and valued. To these guys you are not just a number but someone they genuinely want to have a great time and experience the reef in whatever capacity you can (dive, snorkel, swim or simply admire from the boat)

The crew are professional, enthusiastic and ensure the day runs smoothly. Matt, an extremely competent instructor took my 2 friends for their first ever intro dives- minds blown, they signed up for a 2nd one and have been buzzing ever since. The delicious and abundant food must also get a mention as should all the crew again for the experience they provide.

As someone who seen the daily operations of all dive boat companies in Cairns operate over the last 10 years, Ocean Freedom is by far the only company I could ever recommend. Keep up the amazing work team, you deserve all the good luck moving forward out of this Covid situation.

The day was really well organised and catered for everything we needed. We have been out on reef tours before but found this company we’re really helpful with fantastic staff ratios so they could take the time to look after passengers needs, even those who don’t swim or aren’t confident in the water. It was a little more expensive than other options but totally worth it as you spent heaps of time in the water with guided snorkel tours at different locations and drifting along the coral edges. The crew were super friendly and helpful and nothing was too hard. We saw them go out of their way for everyone to have a great time, just like they were looking after their own family and friends. Would definitely recommend to others

The best cruise experience on the reef. The Ocean Freedom family are outstanding and they facilitate a memorable day on the reef.
Totally professional with 100% fun thrown in.
Our snorkeling and diving was supurb we couldn't have been happier.
We have done similar trips in Fiji & Hawaii but these guys are next level.
From start to finish our day was amazing.
All the crew were interactive, knowledgeable, and very attentive.
Scuba with Lou & Rose was such a brilliant experience, thanks girls!
Shout out to Paul for assistance with our new masks. We though we had made them dive ready but he really helped when they started to fog. Fixed things completely and with a smile.
Food was outstanding as was a nice cold beer on the way back to port.
If your wondering who to go to the reef with, this premium smaller vessel experience is definitely the way to go. Your treated as valued guests not just a number to be herded on and off a larger vessel.
Plenty of room on the boat and good spaces to relax.
Do yourself a favor and have an Ocean Freedom experience.
We will be back next time were in Cairns.
Thanks to all the crew for our memorable day on the reef.

Fantastic Experience from Start to End. We went out with Ocean freedom on 29th Feb 20. When inquiring about booking the Crew/Owner were soo helpful explaining they do 2 to 1 into scuba diver/instructor experience, and as a weak swimmer they made me feel at ease even at this stage explaining the processes etc. The staff were very friendly and welcoming as soon as we got on the boat. They explained everything very well from safety, to procedures, to history, to information about the reef and the wildlife in it. They provided a lovely breakfast tea, lunch and afternoon tea all fresh lovely food. The crew made me feel at ease throughout the whole tour when snorkeling a crew member was always watching and checking if everyone was ok and other crew members were in the water guiding tours around best snorkel areas and helping the swimmers. As a weak swimmer this really helped me enjoy the process. They provided a glass bottom boat tour which was really good and informative. We chose to do the intro scuba dive which was reasonable priced extra and it was amazing. I was terrified when it came to it as a weak swimmer but the staff where soooo patient, reassuring and understanding when it came it from getting the gear on, helping me into the water and complete the saftey tests in the water and then the dive itself. The crew diver holds on to two people only per dive, one of each side and really lets you feel at ease and enjoy the experience as they are literal holding on to you the whole way through guiding you about the scuba diving experience. We enjoyed it sooo much we purchased a second dive ( again we thought reasonably priced) and again they crew were still so patient and helpful and stayed holding on to us the entire time exact same as the first dive.Fantastic experience. Anyone who is a weak swimmer or worrying about doing a dive this company definitely takes away the fear and worry and makes it such a great experience! Could not recommend this company enough.

We had originally booked on “Ocean Free”, but sadly due to lack of bookings were moved to “Ocean Freedom”. However…..!

The whole day was superb from arrival at the jetty, check in, boarding, the days events, food and return back to port.

The weather on the day was hot, humid, overcast but dry, the day before saw torrential rain most of the day in Cairns. The young crew where superb at all stages, all safety briefs where informative but with humour at the same time. Fruit, pastries , tea and coffeee included on arrival. The boat is well maintained and got us to the first location in about an hour. Those diving were sorted first, then those of us snorkelling where in the water shortly after enjoying the marine life including many fish, a few turtles and one reef shark. There was an opportunity to go on the glass bottomed boat also with an excellent commentary.

Lunch followed and was excellent with salmon, shrimp, beef, chicken, ham, salami, salad, pasta bread and butter, soft and alcohol drinks are paid for extra but there is included tea and coffee all day.

After lunch we moved to the second location for more of the above, my highlights being turtles, a 4ft barracuda and a large Giant Trevaille (GT)sticking around for a feed from a crew member at the end.

The trip back to port included fruit, cheese, biscuits and cake. We were so well catered for that we didn’t have an evening meal that eve! I cannot praise the staff enough, they looked after us well, including the few that were sick on a flat calm sea! All in all a superb end to our Aussie adventure, thank you guys 👌

Our apologies again for having to change the original plans of having you tour on Ocean Free, but we are over the moon that Ocean Freedom delivered a "superb" experience from you! Thank you so much for taking the time to leave such detailed, positive feedback - we really appreciate it! We are stoked that our cheeky crew, the "excellent" catering and the Great Barrier Reef itself made your experience one to remember. It's absolutely fantastic that so many marine animals made an appearance for you, extremely lucky to have fish, turtles, reef shark and a barracuda say g'day all in one day! Our crew work hard to ensure everyone onboard are safe, well fed and having a great time, we will make sure that your kind words get passed onto everyone in the Ocean Freedom family! We look forward to having you tour with us on Ocean Free in the future, it was a pleasure having you onboard! Thank you again for your kind words :))

At the last minute we decided to travel North to FNQ instead of our planned trip to The Great Ocean Road in Melbourne. We first headed to Port Douglas and as we had already snorkelled and dove in a number of other amazing places we decided against a trip while further North. We headed to Cairns for the last couple of days and on a walk around we called in at there Check In. The member on staff at the time could not have been more helpful, lots of very good information without pressing to sell the trip. We decided to book the trip even though the weather was not favourable. We boarded the boat and were immediately made to feel welcome by both the staff and the owner of the boat. Did I say this was an owner ran and operated company! The day was fantastic, lots of useful information and plenty of staff to help out wherever the need arose. The snorkelling was done over 4 separate events, a glass bottom boat trip, a snorkelling trip, a drift snorkelling event and then we moved to another site for the final snorkelling event. Lots of fish of all species including ‘Nemo’ and ‘Bruce’ (in the form of a silver tip)! The lunch was amazing, lots of seafood or salad or meat to cater for any need. A spot of cheese and biscuits and some cake for good measure. We were extremely happy to see that joining the five of us were a group of University Students investigating and replanting coral in the area. A massive thanks to Perry (the owner) and his team for an epic journey. Thank you so much! I would definitely recommend this trip to anyone interested in the reef!

Wow, thanks for this wonderful and detailed review! Glad that you made that last minute trip north and chose to spend it with us :) Sounds like you had a great day seeing some "Nemo" favourites, as well as learning about the coral "gardening" we have been participating in. Hope to see you again!

Waking up early in Cairns is not difficult, believe me as I am someone that likes to sleep.. And it is specially easier when you're going to embark on one of the most amazing adventures of your life. You start with the checkin with where you will meet the first group of very friendly people and then it will all continue going up when you arrive at the boat and you meet the young, fresh and happy crew that always carry a smile and a friendly word for you. Prepare yourself to enjoy the fantastic trip. Get your coffee and pastry and settle for the ride up to the 1st snorkeling point and then, jump into the water and just enjoy. Breath with your heart (and don't forget to use also the lungs :)) as you will see beauty in its true sense. After take a ride on the glass bottom boat, I hope you go with Scott, he is great and you'll learn so much (sharks it's his speciality, I would say). After lunch another adventure under water with more awesome experiences. On the way back, just sit and enjoy!
