      Amazing crew!
Had the best time. Everyone was so friendly and I felt super comfortable the whole way through. Felt a bit sea sick mid activity and the crew was nice enough to help me out.

Friendly Crew took us on an Amazing Underwater Adventure!
My wife and I booked our tour to the Great Barrier Reef with Ocean Freedom on Feb 16th, 2024. Simply put, it was one of the best experiences we had in water so far! The crew, the cat, the snorkeling, the dive sites - everything just added to our experience and made it better. I should also mention that the weather was also perfect till the last hour of the tour. There was some rain when we decided to start back but did not disrupt our trip in any way. The only regret for the entire day is that we were not prepared to take any underwater photos or videos. TLDR - Brace yourselves We had booked the package with one intro dive each. We started promptly by 8 AM from Cairns marina (reef fleet terminal). From the beginning, the crew was very observant and friendly. My wife was a little anxious about being on the boat that day and one of the crewmates (Charlotte) immediately noticed and came to talk to her and comforted her. There was tea, coffee and fruit on the boat. All the briefings were pretty funny and engaging rather than a boring narrative of safety rules. Luckily for us there were only 3 people including us that were going for a dive that day. Our instructor Yanu and a scuba trainee (Charlotte again) gave us detailed instructions with a mix of the dive physics and rules. We reached the Upolu reef in about an hour on the boat. We had a pre-fixed mind from the online reviews that glass boat tour would not be that great. But once again, the narration and the interactions from the guide (Matt, I believe) made it a good experience. Snorkeling was for everyone, I suppose. All were given the equipment, and all went snorkeling - some in pairs and some with the crew mates who were happy to take whoever would join to the reef sites and show us the good stuff, even duck dive at times to show how giant clams close up or how soft coral move with the current and hard do not - and so on... We saw jelly fish is an understatement. They were everywhere (not the dangerous kind). Besides the colorful corals (most of them were brown but there were enough bright ones to blow your mind) there were all kinds of fish - groupers, clown fish, parrotfish, Sting rays, variety of jelly fish, variety of sea cucumbers and many more. We even found a reef shark and a turtle was spotted from the boat, but no one could actually see one up close. Then for the dive, we had two instructors for the 3 of us. After suiting up, we practiced breathing and skills at a dive bar attached to the boat. Yanu took me and my wife under the water. After about 10 minutes, my wife panicked as she drank a gulp of sea water, and we were safely escorted back up and we had to stick to 'just under the water' thereafter. I should say I was very disappointed but there is no way I was forcing my wife to go back. Safety first! Soo, I was very happy when the captain offered to take us for another free dive post lunch (which is usually charged). So, after a decent lunch served by the crew, we went to a different spot about 10-15 minutes from the first one. My wife tried to dive again but just stuck with snorkeling. I went back down with Yanu and Charlotte and this time, went as deep as the sea floor near the reef, swam with shoals of fish, saw a ray up close in the sand and even spotted a puffer fish! It was just a beautiful and serene world under there. After about 30 minutes of diving around the reef, it started to rain which we could see from under the water. It is very tiring to swim in the currents continuously especially when we are not keeping ourselves active on a regular basis. So, we just relaxed on the cat after that and waited for everyone to come aboard from the snorkeling. Then, there was fish feeding (a regulated amount with permission from GBRMPA) from the boat and that concluded our trip for the day. On the way back the crew served us 2 rounds of snacks and a delicious cake. We were back on the marina by ~4 PM.

      Outstanding!
Everything was outstanding! The abundance of food, the guides, the instructors and the equipment. I am apprehensive in the water. A guide stayed with me the whole time and was very encouraging. I was able to see a lot and had a very positive experience. Thank you so much!

      Great Scuba experience
We had a fabulous time scuba diving. It had been six years since we’ve been diving so my husband and I were both a little nervous. Amber took incredible care of us. She was the dive master we met down with, and she made it so easy and comfortable. We got to see a turtles and stingrays and clown fish and giant clams and tons of other fish so really large barracudas. They fed us huge seafood all you can eat lunch. They also brought us lots of snacks during the day fruit cakes, and other yummy items. I would definitely recommend booking with this company. Everyone was friendly. We met a lot of fun people and just had a great time.

      Fantastic experience
What an amazing tour this was. The crew was very chill, friendly and knowledgable. The gear was good and there was plenty of delicious food. The snorkling and glass boat tour were fantastic. We saw countless beatiful coloured fish, multiple turtles, rays and even a reef shark. Super cool swimming with them. Ocean freedom has few fixed spots on the reef, so they really know their way around. Thanks for the great experience!

      Highly recommended!
With so many companies in Cairns to entice you to snorkelling and diving experiences, I proceeded with Ocean Freedom company based on reviews. They are fantastic from get go! The experience was personalised. I have fear of water but didn’t want to disappoint rest of family by not participating. I’m glad I did! Skipper Ben made sure I was buddies with an instructor and guided me to most beautiful reefs and managed to see clam, stingrays, nemo and many other fish. Food was delicious - buffet styled lunch, accompanied by cheese and fruit platter, cakes. If you forget to take motion sickness tablets don’t worry, they have this too on the board. Well spent money and i would definitely come back again.

      Great crew!
The crew on this tour were so nice and patient. There were multiple people on our boat who had never snorkeled and didn’t even know how to swim! The snorkeling was fantastic and plenty of time and each stop. Almost everything served was gluten free. Highly recommend this tour

      Leave the turtles alone!
I’ve done a lot of snorkel trips. I enjoyed this vessel and I enjoyed the first snorkel spot we visited. The second site, the current was too strong and U got right back in the boat. I thought the crew was too relaxed on their safety briefing. They did not really go over how to keep your distance from the sea turtles. As a result, we had a sea turtle swim into our roped off area. Guests were touching it to take selfies. Guests were hanging on it while it was swimming away from them. Two crew members, one on the top deck in a red vest, were watching and not telling the ignorant guests to knock it off. It was disgusting. I felt horrible for the sea turtle. It left me with a very unfavorable opinion of this company.

      Amazing day at the reef!
We had the most incredible day on Ocean Freedom yesterday! The boat, crew and food was amazing and the snorkeling… wow! Snorkeling with turtles, soooo many types of colourful fish, corals, starfish and sea cucumbers was so great! It was our sons first visit to the Great Barrier Reef and he loved every second, we could not get him out of the water and when we did try “Its one of the 7 wonders of the world” well, you just can’t argue with that! Thanks so much for the amazing experience.

      Excellent Crew!
Professional crew, decent food, low cost on beverages, and very good in-water guidance. My only complaint was the quality of snorkeling gear.

      Great crew!
The staffcrew of the Ocean Freedom was great! They were super attentive to everyone's needs and when offer a personal swim with clients around the Reef if your are not totally comfortable going on your own. The lunch was great, plenty of tasty food. One of our group was feeling a little quesy after snorkeling and didn't feel like eating and the staff offered to put aside a platefull of food for him for later. Very thoughtful. Overall a very fun experience.

Highly recommended. Full marks on everything and thanks for looking after everyone so well
The whole trip was fabulous and all of my family felt that they were given special attention. Charlotte who did the marvellous food was always smiling and so helpful, Blair did the introduction for safety so well, Molly who did the snorkeling instructions so well with Ruth and Lucy supporting me so well during my first attempts. The food was brilliant throughout the trip and plenty of it. Nothing was rushed and the time spent snorkeling and diving was perfect in length of time and support. The captain was always supporting his crew so everyone got maximum out of the trip. An absolutely fantastic day. Thank you

Great Barrier Reef was something on my bucket list so this small group tour really appealed. The crew were great, very friendly and I can’t fault the service that they provided. One of them guided me and 2 others around while we were snorkelling and pointed out animas in the water including a turtle and reef shark. This was great!
However the amount of time spent in the water is minimal particularly if you opt to explore Green Island. There is however the option to go back in the water and skip the island or add scuba diving for extra cost.
The issue for me was that the sail boat is extremely small and cramped. Yes the tour group is small and you can store your belongings in the deck below but getting up and down the ladder may be challenging for some. It’s not good for anyone who feels claustrophobic.
I have never suffered with travel/seasickness but this trip made me queasy. But they do provide anti-sickness tablets at the beginning of the day for anyone who feels that they need them.
We had lunch on the boat in a cramped area which wasn’t enjoyable due to lack of space and choppy waters. Food was ok and mostly consisted of salad.
Most of the day is spent making the return journey to the reef/Green Island during which there is nothing to do. I thought there would be some kind of activity during this time but we were left to entertain ourselves…might be ok if you’re travelling in a couple/group. But personally I was happy to be back on land.

Hi Lauren, Thank you for your feedback. Happy to hear you enjoyed snorkelling with our crew and got to see a turtle and a reef shark! Reef sharks a normally very timid, so you were extremely luck to see one. Our Ocean Free tour provides 4.5 hours of time between the reef and island to choose as you wish. Most boats have 3-4hrs of reef time so as such the tour offers a good amount of time on the reef time especially if you opt not to go to Green Island as you mentioned. Ocean Free is advertised to include a sailing experience so it will take a little longer to get to and from the reef than a motor vessel but also provides an authentic sailing experience. The boat is surveyed to carry 52 guests, but we cap it at 25 for comfort. Sometimes passengers may congregate in the rear of the vessel (undercover), this may have been the case on the day you travelled but on most days guests will sit along the foredeck on both sides. On the journey home we do turn off all engines and give a full sail experience allowing our customers to get the full joy of sailing in silence as this is part of the experience this tour offers! We sorry that you did not find the sailing enjoyable and if you are back in Cairns you may prefer our Ocean Freedom tour as this is a fully motorized fast catamaran and allows 6 hours of reef time!

The sailing boat experience was amazing! The crew were extremely professional but at the same time friendly, and happy to join in with conversations and have a laugh. Skipper Pascal, diving instructor Chris, and snorkeling guide Cassie, worked beautifully as a team and made the entire experience better for everyone on board. The sails going up on the return was unreal! My sister Missy had 2 dives and loved every minute of them, and the rest of us thoroughly enjoyed our snorkel. The water on Green Island was gorgeous to swim in. A trip that we will never forget. Highly recommend you go directly through this company and book in as many adventures as you can!

This tour was so well organised. A brilliant sail out to the snorkeling spot. On the way we were fitted out with stinger suits and snorkel gear by the lovely staff. They were so great and nothing was too much trouble. On the way we were offered tea/coffee and fresh fruit.
The snorkeling was beautiful with lots of amazing coral and sea life. We then had a delicious lunch of salads, prawns and cold meats before being transferred over to Green Island for some free time exploring. So idyllic. A real coffee could be obtained and we had an incredible iced coffee from the cafe.
Then back to the boat for the sail home. Cheese and wine on the way home!
Just a perfect day, brilliantly run by a friendly and professional crew.

My Husband and our 2 daughters (7&9) did this yesterday. It was without a doubt the best boat trip we have been on. Chris, Ben, Eva and Sophie were an amazing crew who were professional and welcoming. They made us feel like our experience was important.

We had an almost private reef tour with Sophie, who was so wonderful with our girls we felt safe enough to have a little snorkel off while she had them. They learned so much about the reef from what Sophie taught them.
Green Island was nice and the crocs in the sanctuary were massive and quite awesome.
Food was good. We certainly didnt go hungry!
The Crew coped with extreme weather conditions, on the way back we got caught in a storm and it was amazing. Thunder and lightening and lashes of rain. They made sure everyone was comfy and safe and Captain Ben did a brilliant job of getting everyone home safe.
All in all a fab day. Thanks so much guys. Xxxx

Can highly recommend this tour as a more personal way to enjoy the reef. We had only 11 on our ‘cruise’ and the 3 crew (Chris, Pascal & Yada) were attentive, friendly and jovial. They made the day feel like a trip out with old mates rather than strangers. Banter with and between the crew was top notch.
Whilst the weather wasn’t ideal: the wind picked up in the afternoon, some rain to start and end the day and a strong current at the snorkelling spot; all these were adapted to by the professional crew and made to be insignificant to our enjoyment of the day.
Plenty of great fish and coral to see at the snorkelling site and enough time on Green Island for a full circumnavigation by foot and a nice lay on the sand.
Food was also yummy and plentiful. Only improvement would be a better selection of beer (something other than VB or XXXX).
Will certainly be my go-to activity on any return trip and would recommend to any friends visiting Cairns.

My friend and I visited Cairns over the weekend and came across this full day sailing cruise on the reef. We were blow away by the amazing day had on this beautiful sailboat. The day was spent on the beautiful reef in an intimate and relaxed setting with a great and attentive crew onboard. As someone who was on her third trip out on the reef I can highly recommend Ocean Free & Ocean Freedom for a day out snorkeling and exploring the beautiful Great Barrier Reef and Green Island.

Such a wonderfully family orientated day. My 4 and 5 yo were soon part of the crew and nothing was a problem. The amazing crew gave us extra support to get the kids comfy snorkeling from the boat with mature coral heads and big fish right beside their authorised mooring in the lagoon, and helped in answering the usual 1000 "why's" of my children's curiosities... These guys know exactly how to orchestrate a family day to remember on the reef, with the bonuses of a stop on Green Is for an icecream (beer) and a beautiful sail home (perhaps another beer enjoying the sail). Having worked in the marine industry all my life, I can say hand on heart this family owned and operated business is passionate, caring and responsible and the one we will come back and continue to support. Very happy to have made the right choice... our kids are still frothing about their day! Pick Ocean Free, it's a day to long remember.

This was an amazing excursion! For my solo travelers out there: there were zero children on this experience! The group was small, 25 or so and the crew were pretty young and vibrant. The snorkeling was excellent with some great views of the reef. I spotted the turtle while out in the reef, my good luck charm for the rest of the year. There was nothing I didn’t like about the excursion, I met quite a few people (I tend to do better in smaller settings) and had a great time. Make sure you are physically able to climb a ladder and get around tight quarters. Other than that, I’d highly recommend this excursion for my fellow solo travelers.

The crew Pascal, Chris and Yadda were personable, attentive and punctual. My wife is not a snorkeler. Yadda helped her in the water and she experienced the underwater life of the Reef ... she loved it! Lunch was delicious. We didn't book a separate tour on Green Island. We walked around the island, and found there wasn't much more to do unless you liked to shop. It was a great day!
