About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Monique W0 contributionsmore time walking to the wrecks then doing activitiesI was really looking forward to going to Moreton island with my mum from brisbane. To anyone looking at doing this tour I would definitely recommend driving to the wharf, I wish we were provided information that you could get day parking there, and that there was plenty of street parking - we weren’t sure so we got an Uber. Once arriving to Moreton island we were taken to the Tangatours building which was run okay, just a lot for that one women to manage everyone choosing what tours they were going to do that day. We chose to do a snorkelling tour, 3 hour hire of kayak/snorkel equipment, and 1 hour stand up paddle board hire. It’s very hard to fit all the activities between 9:30am-3:30pm. Unfortunately the day we picked we couldn’t use our stand up paddle board experience because for the guided snorkel tour we could not be picked up from the tangatours location, and had to walk 25 mins each way to the tangalooma wrecks (no fault of the staff). This meant that the from 1:15pm-3:30pm we were doing the guided snorkel tour, which if we had of known I probably would’ve just snorkelled by myself because I’m a confident swimmer. Also it was quite windy the day we went so there was some swell, meaning when we hired the kayak we had to walk it up the beach (25 min w/o kayak so a bit longer with the kayak) to the tangalooma wrecks. I don’t know that I would do that again, as there is a micat ferry and another company that does dock right adjacent to the wrecks, not a 25 min walk that my mum struggled with. It also seemed like there were not enough staff to help with rentals when there were snorkel tours going on, but I’m saying that the guide we had, Jaz was absolutely wonderful and so kind. We are grateful to have had her. But we really recommend if you are going to snorkel, and if there is swell please assess your ability to swim because we had people in our group that obviously lied about being able to swim and poor jaz had to pull them along and they didn’t help her at all. Because of the walk and the waivers needed for the snorkel tour (important for safety but time consuming) it just meant we didn’t actually get to borrow the paddle boards, we also almost missed our ferry because we were walking back from the wreck after the guided snorkel tour (and it decided to leave 30 minutes early because of the swell). I’m glad that it re docked and we left at 4pm, but I wouldn’t of purchased the $169 one for myself and I given we couldn’t actually do all the activities!Written 13 April 2023
- M3436ONvickib0 contributionsVisit to St Helena Island BrisbaneThe boat left Manly Harbour at 10.00am and returned at 3.00pm. It was a really outstanding day. Three characters cum tour guides remained in character throughout the day and performed various aspects of the island's history which is so close to Brisbane. Our family aged from 10yrs to mid 70's enjoyed the humorous, knowledgable and entertaining day. There was even a van for those that weren't up to walking the 5 kms or so. I highly recommend the tour.Written 6 March 2023
- heikem6380 contributionsA lot to do in little time.Booking through the Trip Advisor website was uncomplicated, even the night before. The next morning, our names were already on the list at check-in at the ferry terminal. On the island, we were greeted as we got off the pier and taken to their rental location. We signed the forms. That all went pretty fast. In the Wrecks Package, you have 3 activities to choose from, but it is really difficult to get in all 3 in one day. We took the early ferry, but by the time you are there and signed up, it is 9:30. That leaves 6 hours for the activities, as you need to pick up the return ticket around 3:30 back at the pier. We did the fish feeding event right away (at 9:30), which was supposed to be an hour, but they had us back within 30 minutes. Snorkeling was due at 11:45, meaning you are ready to go out to the wrecks at 12:45. Needless to say, after that, the day is done. We ended up taking a kayak and snorkel by ourselves, not the tour, to give us more time at the wreck. That was fine, other than the fact, that the kayaks were very hard to streer in the water. But we had a great time observing the fishes. Some of them are very curious and come right up to you. Overall, it was a fun day. I think the deal, for that price, is OK. I think you end up paying about the same had you chosen the activites separately. You do loose a lot of time between activities. We had the (bad) luck that a cruise ship had anchored near the island, so there was a LOT going on.Written 2 February 2023
- K6938UDdaniell0 contributionsCheck the weather!I know they cannot control the weather but, conditions were not good the day before and were forecasted for strong winds on our day (didn’t know). When we arrived we couldn’t do any of the water features. I couldn’t do any of the land features from other vendors because everyone on the island booked those excursions due the poor water conditions. Whole day was a bust! Partial good news is that we received a 45% refund. Owner called day prior to ask if I could go another day (couldn’t because we were leaving), at that point it would have been appropriate to be clear about the island potential conditions due to the forecast and give me the opportunity to cancel and get a full refund. $128 gone to a very frustrating day. Recommend to book land excursions prior to arrival and bring snorkeling gear. Island has some amazing opportunities, activities just get over run on busy days.Written 3 November 2022
- Maddyyyw0 contributionsATV , lunch and ferry tourAnyone going to Tangalooma for the day have to include this in your day. Huon took us out for a great ride on the ATVs, the group was a bit slow but Huon made the effort to take us apart from the group for a bit more fun. Highly recommended 😊Written 24 September 2022
- A5276LNsimonem0 contributionsGreat day, but communication needs improvementChose the Wrecks Adventure Tour for our trip to Moreton today, price seemed great considering it was only about $60 more than catching the Micat over, then activities and resort access are included. A few of the activities weren't available because it was not windy enough (catamaran and parasailing) and The Covid (banana boating) which was a bit of a bummer, but our Guided Wrecks snorkel, Stand Up Paddle board and Kayak hires all ended up being great. Our snorkel guides were efficient and friendly, and hiring the SUP and kayaks was super smooth. The wrecks were pretty busy and crowded, but hey, it's that time of year. Only 4 stars because we were sent incorrect info about ferry departure in the morning, told 7am in the email confirmation and website FAQ but it's actually 8. I could've slept another hour! Then on arrival when choosing our activities the staff also told us confusing info about which activities went to the wrecks and how. Otherwise a great day, would love to go back for longer!Written 3 January 2021

- Travelkatsec0 contributionsSnorkelingThe night after I went snorkelling I developed a sore throat. My throat was burning!!! I was treated for a bacterial throat infection. The staff don’t monitor customers cleaning their snorkel which is a quick dunk in water which I hope did have antiseptic. And clearly they staff don’t do any further cleaning. Avoid if you want to be sick.Written 28 February 2020
- Megan S0 contributionsThe island is great, just book through someone elseSummary: The island is beautiful and worth visiting. A lot of the positive reviews are about the island itself, not this company. So, visit!! Just book through basically anyone else. When we spoke with the resort staff about our problems they were very kind and seemed to care. You can definitely do better! They are rude and have ridiculous policies that are discriminatory. They do not seem to care at all whether their patrons are safe. They simply want to make money and be able to place blame on others when things go wrong. Further you have very little control over when you do things on the island. They booked our boat tour during the only time the restaurants were open for lunch. Hope you want a muffin for lunch!! They also failed to notify us that the island water was contaminated with ECOLI! And had been for months. So, hand washing was a problem, and all food and water was concerning. I was pregnant and didn’t find out till I arrived, and it’s a lot easier to catch when pregnant and definitely a huge problem. They said “blame the resort”. Well, the resort had a warning. I very much wish we had booked a different way.Written 2 February 2020
- Davebabe0 contributionsMoreton Island Left Us Wanting More.An early start (7.00am), at Brisbane Coach & Train Station for coach to the ferry. A Bostin hot day and got hotter as the day went on! We booked with Sunset Safari's where we were met a really friendly bunch of guides in Chris and Zak etc. This was our first time on anything like this, we were totally blown away as we approached Moreton Island, all we saw was crystal clear blue water and golden sands! We went for the day trip, our coach was a 4x4 coach! There journey was toally Bostin, we strapped ourselves in and off we bounced over the sand dunes, down and along deep sand tracks, through a forest track and along beach after beach like Spitfire Beach and Braydon Beach, as the sea waves crashed in! After a lunch, we visited Honeymoon Bay, North Point, North Point Lighthouse and Blue Lagoon for a paddle! The time just flew by, but we were well looked after, well fed and had a totally PURE BOSTIN time! Well worth a visit. Thank you all at Sunset Safari's for a Bostin time!Written 22 January 2020

Lots of fishermen around wrecks. I worried about getting caught in a hook. Instructions for snorkeling non existent.Written 10 December 2019
- Heidi B0 contributionsAveragePositives: The island was beautiful and being able to access all the resort facilities was good. The staff on the resort was lovely and super helpful! Negatives: Firstly being told to get to the ferry port at 6am was insane. No way you need to be there that early. Secondly on our information email it said someone would meet us off the boat... this didn’t happen. A group of us were wandering round trying to figure out where to go for a good while... ended up having to ask at main reception, this really was unorganised.Written 30 November 2019

My husband and I booked this tour last minute after being told of the beauty of Moreton Island. I wished we never had!!
The island itself is beautiful, but everything else revolving around it is just utterly horrific!
- Information provided upon booking was very inconsistent, instructing us to meet at the docks: 0 min, 30 min or 60 min before departure… all on the same ticket!
- After landing in Moreton, we were herded to some tables where we had to fill out a formular and decide which activities we wanted to participate. We had paid extra for the snorkeling guided tour so they told us to proceed to the sport equipment renting shop. There the circus started: we have previously rented fins and wet suits at many different locations across Queensland and Moreton was by far the most ridiculously disorganized system I have ever seen: queue a first time just to tell what you need, a second queue for the fins where we stood with other people for over 10 min without anybody from the staff showing up, queue a third time for the dirtiest, most worn out wet suit I have ever seen. Are you done after that? NO! Now you have to fill ANOTHER formular with some rude stuff members. Then came the briefing and waiting for the boat - tour was supposed to start at 9:45, we weren’t on the boat until 10:30…
- The boat takes 5 min to reach the wrecks and the snorkeling tour lasted 30min - ridiculously short given we had spent over an hour being made ready for it. And unfortunately: it was NOT worth the wait! Moreton wasn’t too crowded on the day of our visit and yet I can’t tell you how many snorkelers, divers, people in kayak are at the wrecks - I was hit twice by kayaks, which is unavoidable in those conditions. The guide barely gave any info, her only preoccupation was getting us at the other end of the site within 30min and kept ordering us to keep going. We were then rushed to the boat because “we have go pick up the next tour”. What a rip off!
- Lunch: if your expectations are at the level of the worst fast food you’ve ever had, you’ll be disappointed: it is worse! We had calamari and fish that tasted like rubber, undercooked chips, a burger as dry as a bone. Food on the island is simply disgusting!
We were so let down we decided to take an earlier ferry back to Brisbane. And just so you know: it may be 2022 but the ferry operator believes we are still in the 90’s. You booked online? You still have to line to get your ferry pass - once in Brisbane and once in Moreton, or they won’t let you on board.
Save your money and plan something else if you are in Brisbane!

Hi Erica,
Firstly I'm very sorry about your experience over here on Tangalooma. We always strive to provide as safe and enjoyable an experience for guests as possible so anything that falls short of that we take very seriously.
As I mentioned safety is an upmost priority here and that can account for the duration spent preparing for the snorkel itself. Initially we greet our guests at the jetty to make sure they are taken to the correct place rather than getting lost in the resort. As this has to be all guests participating in anything within watersports we then have to divide them into the correct groups after arriving at our office. Those who are snorkelling are then shown where they need to go to meet for that tour. approximately 200m away. As these tours run throughout the day and are not always directly after this they are advised to arrive there 15mins before the tour as making sure upto 60people are in the right place can take a little time.
On arrival they are checked in and fill in a snorkel manifest form which is designed to gauge their ability and highlight any issues that we need to be aware of. This is an important safety measure designed to group guests correctly however it can take a little time to make sure it is done correctly.
After which the guests are directed where to get a wetsuit, fins and mask. They are dissuaded from grabbing them themselves to avoid incorrect sizing and instead wait for an employee. Occasionally a staff member might be engaged elsewhere as there are many moving parts at watersports and only so many staff members. After this their groups are called and they are given a briefing by their specific guide as to how the tour will be conducted in the water, proper use of equipment and all safety issues. I'm sure you understand our tours are aimed at all abilities and therefore this is an extremely important part of the process.
Despite all these necessary measures we make sure we have everyone safely on board the boat and departing approximately 45mins after guests advised arrival time (30mins after the displayed start time).
With regards to the snorkel duration itself we get feedback from some that it is too long and some that it is too short. In reality we have found over the years that 30-35mins is the right duration it takes to comfortably get from one end of the wrecks to the other while enjoying all the amazing aquatic life. It is very clearly marked on all our advertising the tour duration is 1:30hrs while the in-water portion will be approx 30mins. This is done so that guests can adequately plan their day while also knowing how long they'll actually be snorkelling.
Some advanced snorkelers who wish to spend more time in the water often take the opportunity to then return to the wrecks by themselves now they know the layout and safe areas. I believe your ticket would have entitled you to 3hr snorkel, mask and fin hire as well as the snorkel tour itself.
Unfortunately we also do not have sole use of the wrecks and therefore cannot stop kayakers, other snorkelers and boats being around. This is another reason a guide comes in handy as they can help the snorkelers get safely through what can sometimes be a busy environment. I do apologise that despite this you had a run in with some kayakers.
I'm sorry that you felt rushed throughout your snorkel tour and we will certainly be looking at more ways we can address this while maintaining a safe and enjoyable tour.
As a gesture I would like to offer you and your husband a free snorkel tour or 3hr snorkel equipment hire if you return to tangalooma island and give us a chance to give you the experience you hoped for.
Thank you!
Alex
