About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Discover401486936200 contributions"Bringing Them Back To Life" - This tour definitely lives up to its name. What a fantastic informative tour. Gary is so passionate and knowledgeable. The stories are told with respect and humour, when appropriate , and as a consequence brought these brave young people back to life . We learned so many things we never even knew had happened in our own country. So glad we went on Garry's tour.Written 16 October 2023
- jendo19610 contributionsHistory Brought to Life!Gazza was a wealth of information the whole time we were out with him learning more about the importance of Darwin in WW2, and the people on both sides, who in some way played a part in this time in our history. His knowledge is deep, which clearly showcases his research into Darwin’s history that he enthusiastically shared. Three hours went by so quickly as he took us on an adventure to so many parts of Darwin with a great story, or two in each location we stopped. Would certainly recommend taking a journey back in time with Gazza. Rod and JenWritten 11 July 2021
- fiona l0 contributionsMust do in DarwinGarry provides a thoroughly informative tour with fabulous stories about a time in Australia’s history that we don’t talk about enough. Highly recommended. Thanks Garry!Written 14 December 2020
- barrykH131PE0 contributionsMust do in DarwinGarry is a great Aussie Larrikin and his knowledge and presentation of the history is just fantastic. He tells some fabulous stories, and also shares some knowledge not readily known, through his research. This is a "must do" when in Darwin.Written 23 October 2020
- Lynchie90 contributionsFantastic informative tourThis tour is a classic example of how a great tour guide can bring history back to life with fantastic storytelling. Gary’s connection to Darwin’s wartime history via his Dad really adds to the storytelling flavour. Garrys real Aussie humour adds to the tour I was in fits Thanks for a great morning Garry a well worthwhile tourWritten 4 October 2020
- KarenS52490 contributionsGarry’s Darwin Bombing Tour5 star tour, informative and friendly Garry makes this 4 hr trip interesting. We visited many places around Darwin in his lovely clean air-conditioned bus. The history and endless stories Garry has to tell keep you very interested and never a dull moment . This tour is a must do item while in Darwin .Written 8 September 2020
- Kim G0 contributionsExcellent tourThis is one of the first things we did in Darwin and helped us get our bearings on the layout of the city. Garry brings the Bombing of Darwin to life. Raises certain questions about what the Australian Government is still not telling us. His book "A Nice Day for Flying" is an excellent commentary and follow up of the tour.Written 17 November 2019
- MarcusD270 contributionsA MUST do if you are in DarwinA really cool location out on the end of the pier, plus there was a VR exhibit when we were there that recreated the bombing. This ins't a part of history that you learn much about if you aren't from Australia, so it was cool to understand more about what happened in and around Darwin during that part of the war.Written 5 November 2019
- Strawb38560 contributionsBombing of Darwin World War 11 HeritageThank you so much Gary for your informative & knowledgeable tour! We began this tour only knowing a minimal amount about the Bombing of Darwin. After our 4 hr tour we came to the realisation that Darwin was impacted more than we ever could imagine. Congratulations Gary we wish you all the best going forward!Written 4 November 2019
- Mike F0 contributionsA passionate and skilled story teller and historianGarry is one of those smaller-scale tour operators that have established themselves in the market by offering a highly personalised and informative tour experience. This tour took in sites around Darwin leading up to and following its bombing by Japanese forces in early 1942. The graphic descriptions of aircraft attack, the resistance by depleted and ill-prepared forces on the ground, the destruction of important buildings and facilities and the stories of heroism were brilliant. Garry is both a passionate and skilled story-teller and a highly informed historian. This tour only had 4 people on a rainy-season morning so the chance to closely question Garry was an added bonus. The concluding visit to the aviation museum was an added highlight. Sorry I hadn't taken this tour years ago!Written 26 October 2019
- Lorrie610 contributionsInformative World War II tourWe recently had the pleasure of taking this half day guided tour of significant bombing and war sites around Darwin. Garry was an excellent and humorous story teller and he had a huge amount of knowledge about the war and bombing of Darwin. We found it incredible that there were many events that we never knew happened and it made us appreciate the lengths our armed forces and everyone involved in the war went to ensure our country was safe. Garry told many stories about individual characters that brought a personal dimension to this time in our history. We would highly recommend this tour.Written 17 October 2019
- NEHiker_110 contributionsImportant battle for Americans to remember, Garry explains events wonderfullyThere are two parts to this review. The first is how this battle involved American sailors and airmen in the defense of Darwin, their actions under fire, their sacrifice and how the Australians remember and honor them. The second part is how Garry brings the events of that day to life so that you can appreciate those actions and come away with a much better appreciation of what went on As mentioned in other reviews, the attack was from the same Japanese task force that hit Pearl Harbor two months prior to the February 19th bombing. What is not really well known is that American servicemen represented over a third of the offical fatality count of that day. This was primarily from the sinking of the USS Peary and airmen trying to defend Darwin with only ten P-40 Kittyhawks (versus over 200 enemy aircraft). Gary is able to not only explain the 'big' picture of the events of the day but also intersperse it with the story of individuals and their actions. One of the best compliments that I can give is that no one on the tour looked at their cell phones during the entire four hours. He was very helpful at pointing out things that were of particular interest to us. In our case, I was looking for a Vietnam era armored personnel carrier at the Darwin Military Museum (the museum is part of the tour) because that was what I used in the army. He also made sure we knew where the USS Peary Memorial was, which is a site that any American visiting Darwin should visit. Highly recommend this tour.Written 12 October 2019
- Tassie140 contributionsMust do in DarwinThis was a fantastic tour. Garry has excellent knowledge of Darwin and especially the bombing, very entertaining commentary son the tour, shown all around the harbour and explained in detail what happened and where and especially with the names and history of some of the soldiers and pilots gave it that personal touch, highly recommendWritten 10 October 2019
- stubb60 contributionsFantastic experienceGarry provided an excellent history of the WW2 bombing of Darwin. His passion for and knowledge of the history combined with his laconic communication made it an awesome experience for us. He is a very personal and likeable guy and the price is in our view great value. Well done mate!Written 7 October 2019
- John F0 contributionsFantasticThanks so much Garry for a wonderful and very informative tour. We learnt so much about the Bombing of Darwin to which we had no idea because this was not taught at school. Your warmth personality and very well speaking as well a little humour made this tour even more interesting. We are glad we purchased your book and cant wait to start reading. Keep up the great job and we will make sure we tell our family and friends about this tour when they visit Darwin.Written 30 September 2019

Really enjoyed the near 6 hr journey with Gary and a lovely Oz couple. Gary certainly not short on enthusiasm and brings a real feel for the event with numerous names and events. Given you get a ‘taxi’ ride to the Aircraft museum included then i felt it was well worth the money. Im a sucker for WW2 history but this was well worth the effort👍

We were visiting from England and discovered this gem of a tour after a recommendation from the delightful lady at the Tourist Information Office here in Darwin.
Our guide, Garry, is a really 'top bloke' [a little expression which we Poms use!] who was friendly, amusing and informative. His recall of anecdotes and stories and the names of the people, event details, dates etc was quite dumbfounding.
Garry's narration of the bombing of Darwin really brought home the scale and horror of those days in 1942 which are often overlooked by many of us in the UK and US. As you will find out if you do the tour [spoiler alert!] more planes attacked Darwin than Pearl Harbour and more tonnage of bombs were dropped. Furthermore, there were many more raids on the city - some 64 in total over the rest of the war.
The tour covers most of the history of the city itself quite apart from the war itself.
The transport vehicle is comfortable, air-conditioned and Garry was the perfect host.
The visit to the aviation museum is included towards the latter part of the tour and I could easily have spent several days there as there was so much to see, view and read including one of those enormous and truly iconic B52 bombers.
If you visit Darwin then, IMHO, this is the *one tour* you should do even though it is nowhere near as well publicised as so many of the other 'big budget' attractions.
Enjoy! We certainly did.

One of the best tours I've ever been on! The tour manager Garry, had a unique way of bringing the bombing of Darwin to life. He generously shared his extensive knowledge in a friendly and engaging way that kept you spell bound and entertained. A genuine Aussie guide with a passion for his topic who was able to convey this to us tourists. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I highly recommend Garry's tour to anyone wanting value for money and a great learning experience about what really went on during WW11 and the bombing of Darwin.

Pick up is at your motel. Garry provides a very indebt narration of the 1942 events and shows you places of which very few would be aware. Being a small group adds to that personalised feeling and all at a leisurely pace. Also included were many of the City's sights including time at the Aviation Museum.

This tour is full of information, stories and laughs. Gary is a terrific guide who has stories of the Bombing of Darwin to make it very entertaining. We learned so much from Gary and saw places right beneath our noses which we would not have linked as important in the Bombing. His passion for Darwin's history was shared with us and we leave Darwin far more informed than when we arrived.

Been coming to Darwin for ten years. Seen historic sites, relics and partaken in a few historical tourist activities. Built a bank of questions on what i’ve seen. Today I thought we would take a guided tour, but which one? Hop on/off bus?, Army truck? I recalled a radio station MIX 104.9 talkback on local small group operator Garry J Gallagher’s “Bombing of Darwin tour”. So easy to coordinate timing with Garry. We experienced four hours of interactive insight with punchlines from Garry. All my questions were answered and many more questions formed from the information he departs. What you get from Garry is a small group, on site, interactive commentary. Not a one way scripted commentary. Wonderful way to learn all about what happened around February 19, 1942 in the Darwin vicinity.
Highly recommended.

Unfortunately I really disliked the tour guide. He was not factual enough and kept leading with facts that were actually jokes. By the end of the tour I had no idea what was true. I found the aviation museum to be the best part and you can go there cheaper than being stuck on a bus looking out a window that was mostly obstructed by trees or heads when he stopped. Only got off the bus three short times other than museum.
Others found him great but I was just not able to find much on this tour that was of great content. Didn’t walk more than 10 metres from the bus but that will suit many. No tunnel tour - only driving around listening to banter and stopping at the museum where he disengaged totally sitting in the cafe.

A very interesting and informative tour!
Garry is very entertaining and really knows his local history plus he throws in the odd funny line.
I highly recommend this half day tour if you’re in Darwin and want to know more about the bombing raids in 1942. The aviation museum was a great finish the tour.

This was a half day tour in a mini van. Alot of knowledge and history shared on wartime Darwin and visit to the Darwin Aviation museum - the aviation museum has B-52 bomber. I felt there was enough time on the tour to be able to explore the museum and you get out at a few points along the journey. Gary was very knowledge and a good character.

Gary the tour guide would have to be one of, if not the best we have had the pleasure of doing a tour with.
From the moment he shakes hands & introduces you to the others in the group with his friendly & happy nature, the next 4 hours seems to disappear quickly with his vast knowledge, story telling along with great sense of humour & banter with everyone on the bus.
It's obvious he loves what he does & he makes the commentary interesting as well as laid back with his Aussie personality.
Thanks Gaz for the experience.
