- L9954HUdebbien0 contributionsBrilliant day tour by plane of KakaduWe did a day trip on a small plane with Kakadu Air piloted by Cian to Jabiru in Kakadu: we flew out @ 7 am on a scenic tour flying over several rivers, a fire, a mine, several aboriginal communities and the famous loops of the Adelaide River all seen from the air. This was followed by a land tour with a local Jabiru guide, Rodney who was very friendly, helpful and knowledgable. Included was a cruise on the East Alligator River with a local Aboriginal guide, Gleeson who shared his detailed knowledge of First Nations people's use of plants and their diet. It was a really brilliant day. I would recommend it to anyone.Written 25 October 2024

We went at the end of the dry season and it ended up just being my wife and I. We had a great flight with our pilot Cian. The boat ride was full of crocs and birds and our guide was great.Written 2 October 2024

Landing on the dirt airstrip was easier than I expected. The river cruise along the river with Crocodiles and the migrating bird life amongst the waterlilles and gums was something I will never forget. So wild and free, untouched and beautiful. This trip was well worth the money, our pilot Cian was very knowledgeable of the local areas and the history that came with it and also made our trip very personalised by looking after us along the way. Our trip began in Darwin and headed east towards the winding Adelaide river then headed south east flying over rocky terrain heading towards our destination Cooinda airport. When at Cooinda we enjoyed a cruise with yellow water cruises seeing lots of wildlife including numerous crocodiles. After the cruise we enjoyed a beautifully cooked barramundi lunch at the Cooinda lodge and headed to our final destination the Warradjan Aboriginal cultural centre where we learnt the history and culture of the Bininj and Mungguy people. The flights to and from Kakadu (in a Cessna 441) were very smooth for a smallish plane but that might be due to Cian’s experience as a pilot. A very pleasurable day.

Last Thursday we did the "Kakadu in a Day Tour" from Darwin. We had a wonderful day and are happy to recommend it highly. Our pilot and tour guide for the day was Myles. His commentary was really interesting and I might add he landed the plane beautifully at the Yellow Water billabong. There were 6 guests in total on the trip. I have read some reviews in which people complained the flight was bumpy, yes it occasionally was a little bumpy but not more than you would expect from a small plane. I suffer from motion sickness and had no problems. The views of the landscape from above are amazing and something you wouldn't get to appreciate on a land trip. The Yellow Water Billabong cruise exceeded my expectations, heaps of crocodiles and amazing wildlife everywhere. The lunch at the Barra Bar was very nice and we had a choice of food, given the remoteness of the location we thought the food was of a high standard. We initially decided to go on the flight, rather than take a land only trip to Kakadu, as my partner has been ill and has mobility issues and we thought any land trip might involve too much walking. In hindsight we both agreed that even if we had had the option to take a land only tour we thought the flight had provided a much better experience. We would recommend it highly and found Myles and all the staff very friendly and helpful

We flew out to Kakadu from Darwin (airport) in a twin engine Cessna 204 piloted by Declan. He gave us a very informative and concise commentary of landmarks and the history of the vast vistas we passed over. We landed and went on the Yellow River boat cruise for 90 minutes that was teaming with wildlife and many croc's as would be expected. Lunch and the opportunity of a swim in the pool was provided for a midday break at Barra Bar (Jabaru) restaurant and a visit to the cultural centre before a direct flight back to Darwin. We could not speak more highly of Declan, great host and pilot for the day and represented Kakadu Air with professionalism.

This was a brilliant day trip, thanks entirely to Daryl our pilot/tour guide/ bus driver/ lunch waiter and provider of chilled bottles of water at all times.
There were seven of us passengers on our Easter Saturday day tour, along with Daryl in a twin engine Cessna. A smooth take off from the Darwin airport runway (tarmac) and headed east above the Adelaide and West/South and East Alligator river system. Daryl kept up the commentary whilst flying us over the immense stone country region of Kakadu National Park, flying low over waterfalls to give photographers a chance on both sides of the plane.
Landing at Cooinda air strip (non-tarmac) was a real experience for those of us who haven't landed at anything other than major airports before. Smooth touchdown, then into the mini bus and over to the Yellow River cruise. We were lucky to see two salt water crocodiles, up close, one eating lunch!
The rest of the trip and flight home to Darwin was excellent. The only way to see this part of the Kakadu National Park is from the air, and from a light plane, not a commercial jet.
Tips for first time travellers: bring a hat, preferably broad brimmed, sunglasses, water bottle, camera, sunscreen, lip balm and wear comfortable enclosed shoes such as sneakers with socks. I took a motion sickness tablet with water before we took off and did not regret that decision. The scenery below the plane is so majestic that I didn't actively focus the camera lens, just took photos as is, and still ended up with stunning photos.
This is a bucket list activity and absolutely recommend it for all ages. We did this trip in the Wet Season and will return to do it again in the Dry Season.

Commentary was very interesting particularly when the volume over the planes headset. Although the plane ride was bumpy we were given fair warning and did get to see the beautiful rock cliffs. Once landed we went straight to the boat cruise which was again filled with very interesting commentary. The cruise was very relaxing and scenery beautiful we got to see lots of wildlife. Our cruise driver was a very informative indigenous man with heritage from the area and gave us an insight to which plants were used for food and other areas in their culture. Lunch was perfect we had a menu to choose from and we went with a perfectly cooked barramundi and lemon myrtle sauce. The tour driver offered and hand delivered us an array of drinks. We had a table in the air con restaurant reserved for us unlike other bus tours who all got mixed around and had food off the buffet. We had plenty of time for lunch and to sit and talk to the small tour group of 8 we were with. Then we went an visited the cultural centre and learnt about the traditional owners of the area before a flight back.

Thank you so much from all of us for an absolutely fantastic day. From take off to landing back in Darwin, everything ran like clock work. The staff were friendly and helpful, very knowledgeable and passionate about Kakadu and Arnhem Land. Special thanks to our wonderful pilot, Daryl; and to Peter who piloted the other plane. I can’t imagine seeing this incredible part of Australia in any other way - seeing it from the air was incredibly humbling.
The Yellow River cruise was brilliant and we saw so much wildlife! Our guide (sorry, can’t remember his name) was very experienced and knowledgeable and took the time to take us up close to see crocodiles basking on the river bank, and point out the myriad of bird life and water buffalos which most of us would probably have missed if not for his skilled eye. Explaining the Aboriginal way of life and living on country in this part of Australia was very helpful. And lunch was delicious too!
I can’t say enough positive things about this tour. Probably the best I’ve done and I’ve travelled extensively around the world. Well worth every cent - we are so glad we did it and would highly recommend it to anyone visiting the Top End!
Thank you again, we will remember this day well with many happy memories!
Regards, Donna, Chris, Linda & Jenny from Toowoomba QLD Australia

What a day! We had a day that we will remember for a long time. Steve was not just a great pilot but also a very good host. His commentary was both informative and delivered in a way that created the great experience.
The Yellow Waters cruise matched the flight with a polished delivery on all things Kakadu. Arly certainly knows her stuff and kept the cruise interesting.
Thanks for a magical day and see you again.

My 78yo Mum and I booked the one day trip from Darwin and completed the day with the biggest grins ever. Everything just fell into place and the experience was like a VIP tour of the area by both plane and boat. The Staff were amazing. They were all so courteous, well informed and polite to say the least.
I would personally recommend spending the extra money thus saving yourself time travelling by road. You see so much in the plane and don't feel exhausted on return. The commentary and knowledge of all staff was awesome. I've already told friends and family that this is a MUST do when up here. Thanks again to everyone. See you next time. Av and Ruth.

We really enjoyed our day out. Flight with James out over the wetlands and into Kakadu was excellent and the escarpment highlights, including Jim Jim Falls were well-seen from the air. James' commentary was very good and his attention to and care for his (older) guests much appreciated. Our cruise on the Yellow Water was also good with a number of birds and a crocodile spotted. Vegetation in the wet season is quite lush and very green. Lunch was adequate and the location a nice break in the day. All guides/pilot excellent and well worth the money.

With the National Park’s land mass being 20,000 square kilometres and only a couple of days in Darwin, this flight was the best possible introduction to Kakadu.
Our pilot Steve took us over important historical, sociological & geological sites on our route to Cooinda air strip. Visibility out of each side of the Cessna meant everyone could see everything as he steered us over the sites and at Cooinda he provided us with a faultless landing.
The river cruise was happily not all about crocodiles, although we did see several. The bird life was wonderful - egrets, herons, sea eagles, kites, brolgas and numerous smaller birds, water birds & species of ducks.
The care of country & sourcing of tucker by First Nations people was well explained. This was further supported during a visit to the Cultural Centre also near Cooinda.
Our return to Darwin was quick & direct, flying at a higher altitude.
This was an incredibly memorable day that we won’t forget.
