Itinerary
- 1• Depart the resort in total darkness for the short drive to Bruce Munro’s renowned Field of Light installation • Take it all in from a private dune-top as your host provides details of the artist and his incredible undertaking • Wander through the paths surrounding the 50,000 hand-crafted frosted glass spheres of light, in colours of ochre, deep violet, blue and gentle white • Why not find a quiet corner, covered under a blanket of stars, to immerse yourself in the silence? • Return to the dune-top, where you'll be served a warming tea, coffee or hot chocolate. Watch as the dawn creeps across the desert plain and lights up Uluru – don’t forget to look out for Kata Tjuta behind you! Return to the resort in time for breakfast, all flight transfers or further activities.
About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- nenoc4760 contributionsYou can't miss to see Uluru Ayers rockWe went with Emu run experience! They are very good and very professional!! Our gide YAD was amazing. We were in a small group and he came with a small van! Lots of stories, lots of dates about the Rock and Rock formation and about the Aboriginals. Even like a chef and the host he was excellent! We couldn't get better guide!Written 3 December 2024
- curly02580 contributionsGood views, poor guideThe experience of seeing the magnificent rick was excellent, slightly dampened by a cloudy morning, but still very worthwhile. When we got to Kata Tjuṯa, the sun showed up for a while and this was impressive. So why 3 stars you may ask ? The tour guide I think her name was Nerja or similar?? (She was about 60 with blond hair ) was very rude, sarcastic and little interest in her guests, she was regularly throwing her eyes up to heaven, but managed to be civil when using the coach PA system. Whilst at Kata Tjuṯa , she gave a worthwhile safety briefing . Then proceeded to march off at a fast pace leaving all her guests behind , we kept up with her as were keen walkers, but others where 200-300 metres behind her on rough terrain; not once did she look back to check on their welfare . When at the viewing platform, she stared into space with her back to all her guests . Maybe having a bad day, but it wasn’t a good representative for the company. On the other hand the driver Riley was very amicable, taking time to talk to guests and answer questionsWritten 17 November 2024
- Mai L0 contributionsWorth doing. The sun did not set over the Kata Tjuta outcrop as shown in the booking photo. Access to the actual rock faces was not possible because there was a fenced in area. It was still a pleasant trip with decent hors d’oeuvres and wine. The site is used by several tour groups.Written 12 November 2024
- 848kimg0 contributionsLong Day if You Don’t Do the Long WalkThis tour was well organized and the logistics were handled well. Our guides were Lincoln and Chloe and they were wonderful. Very knowledgeable and engaging. It was a super long day with a pick up for us at 4:15am and a return back around 5:00pm. In our opinion this trip would only be worth it if you are capable of doing the 3 hour rim walk. We were warned that the walk starts with a very steep climb of more than 500 steps and then continues with a lot of up and down. The heat is intense in the high 30’s. While the surrounding area is beautiful, we are not sure it warrants six hours of driving if you don’t see the upper canyon area. We started on the rim walk but after doing the first 200 steps felt it would be too challenging to continue. Chloe was very understanding as we went back down to join the creek walk. Lincoln provided a very informative walk on the ground of the canyon but it was obviously not as exciting. The tour advertised the opportunity to enjoy the amenities of a resort but the property was more like a lodge and there were some obnoxious students in the pool. We swam for a bit anyway and then had a nice lunch while waiting for the return back. We didn’t find the stops on the return to be very interesting and felt they were unnecessary at that point. Lincoln was an excellent driver and made us feel safe the entire time on a difficult and long journey. In our opinion if you don’t have the ability to do an extremely difficult hike (graded as a 5) and the definite highlight, then perhaps give it a pass.Written 11 November 2024
- travelingammonite0 contributionsAbsolute nonsense tourI didn't understand the organization of this itinerary at all. I travel for work and have been on hundreds of tours, and this is in my bottom three. HOW IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE: Pick up guests. Drive to an Uluru viewing platform. Provide hot drink. Guests walk to viewing platform to see Uluru at sunrise. HOW IT WAS: Guests were picked up. We drove to an Uluru viewing platform, where a station for hot drinks (in satchel form) was set up. There was no line, it was an absolute free for all with lots of shoving. Time was wasted just getting the three things you needed: cup, powder/teabag, hot water, none of which had lines. After wasting a bunch of time playing an impromptu round of the Hunger Games, you then walked to the viewing platform, cup in hand, because there were no trash cans. You're also joining 5 other buses full of people, mind you, so the viewing platform is another free for all as you're wrestling for the best spot (with one hand, because remember you're still holding on to your cup). Taking photos was a nightmare. They told us to be back at the bus at 6:05, which is baffling! Sunrise was at 5:54, but the walk back takes 10-15 minutes. Essentially, we were told to be at the bus as the sun was rising, which defeats the purpose of watching the sun rise over Uluru. Even more baffling because we spent 15 minutes sitting in the bus afterwards? Doing nothing?? Like we could have spent more time at the viewing platform? Absolute nonsense. I suspect the tour guide has dealt with late guests before so she told everyone to be back 15 minutes early. Too bad it meant missing the actual sunrise, but she simply didn't care, lol. She just wanted to go home. There was no info provided about Uluru at all. When we pulled up to the viewing platform, all we got was "oh look, there are desert trees..." which yeah, we're in a desert. Tell us more about Uluru! The drive to Kata Tjutu was full of tree facts lol, she just pointed out different kinds of trees and read from a script. I couldn't tell if it was the tour guide's first day or 20th year in the business. Either she didn't know what she was doing or she has simply done it so often, she didn't care anymore. Kata Tjutu itself was nice, we went up and down and that was it, lol. If you're decently fit - like if you could get through a gym class in high school - you'll be fine. There's a bit of an incline but the challenge is the uneven ground caused by a conglomerate of rocks. It's a 20-minute walk up, so very doable. Even this part of the tour you could just see on your own if you rent a car. This tour felt like spending money on things I could do on my own, but like... paying to make it unenjoyable. Skip it if you can.Written 6 November 2024
- T1366YCcathya0 contributionsSunrise experience was betterIconic view of Uluru at sunset - however, too many people, an irritating driver/tour guide (limited knowledge, thought he was a comedy act). Fizz & nibbles were OK, BBQ cancelled. Better option is the Sunrise & Field of Light.Written 2 November 2024
- FarAway308750061510 contributionsLoved it.What an amazing experience this was. We were driven to an area plied with drinks and snacks to watch the breathtaking sunset from a great viewpoint. It was not overly crowded so you could get decent uninterrupted views and take some great photos. We were then driven to an area so close to the rock for a bbq cooked to your liking with plenty of choice after which we were treated to a star gazing talk. Absolutely worth every penny. The staff were so amazing and made sure you had everything you needed. One of the highlights of our Australian trip.Written 31 October 2024
- hiking_reads0 contributionsMUST DOMUST DO! Very early morning (pick up at about 5am, dependent on time of year). Back to the resort before suppertime. Great hike, Starts with a 520 step climb tp get to the rim...that's the hardest part. Easier after that, but still many more ups and downs, just shorter ones. Good exercise. Bring LOTS of water, particularly in the hot months. Park regulations stipulate 3L per person. On the resort, buy bottled water at the Shell gas station....much cheaper that at the hotels. Or at the IGA grocery store, but not sure about their prices.Written 27 October 2024
- JohnMcB17170 contributionsMorning MagnificenceThe views were amazing and we took lots of photos. Michelle and Riley (guide and driver) were excellent hosts and really informative. I would recommend this tour to anyone visiting Uluru.Written 24 October 2024
- waynewZ1315JG0 contributionsDo yourself a favour, take the challenge of KC walk with supportive informative staff!Being not a great morning person the 4.15am start didn’t really appeal, however do yourself a favour, make the effort!!! On arrival our tour crew, Chloe, Haley and Jess were outstanding, they catered to all of us, easily placing overseas tourists, locals, us older people and the younger people at ease. They were engaging and provided interesting commentary and facts all day. Breakfast at Kings Creek Station was a bacon and eggs affair for me but there were also healthier options. Then it was on to the Rim Walk at King Canyon. The first 200 steps had people struggling, but being allowed to ascend at a leisurely pace and being encouraged by the guides ensured we all made it to the top and the start of the walk around the rim. The staff were awesome pointing out areas of interest and providing informative commentary. The views and photo opportunities were outstanding. Though I am not an ‘influencer’ I could picture influencers creating outstanding content all around this walk! The spectacular views and scenery cannot be captured via camera….you really just need to do this walk! Although only 6.65km (via the gps watch) it is quite difficult for those that may have limited fitness. The mid morning/midday sun also takes a toll on the south side of the walk, make sure you suck down the water. The walk down is also quite challenging, but the reward of completing this walk is well worth it. Lunch at the Kings Canyon resort was welcomed and the journey back to Yulara was relaxing. A stop at Atila for photos and also at Curtain Springs roadhouse were also a step back in time. We loved this tour, and the staff running it were outstanding!Written 19 October 2024
- thomasfP6446IE0 contributionsMesmerising sight. We arrived after a short, comfortable ride. Michael, the driver, supplied a detailed narration on the way to Kata Tjuta. Unfortunately, there was music being played at the same time, making it difficult to listen to his commentary. We arrived well before sunset and were served snacks and refreshments, including sparkling and red wine, beer, and soft drinks. On our visit to Uluru the previous day, we were not inconvinced by the flies. However, at Kata Tjuta, it was a different senerio. I would definitely recommend using a flynet. The timing of our visit coincided with a full moon rising on our return to Uluru.Written 18 October 2024
- eyebeetrippin0 contributionsPerfect day trip - worth every minute and every dollarWhat a way to fill a day! I joined Glen and Cole for a tour of Kings Canyon. I did the creek walk after trying the steps for the 6km walk and finding my body was not up to the task. Glen dealt with that decision with compassion and competence. I enjoyed the walk along the creek bed with Cole learning much about the flora, fauna and geology. It was a 38degree day and it was not for the faint hearted. You can not carry too much water on these days. You need it all. The bus carried fill ups which was much appreciated. We stopped for a great cooked breakfast prior. Seeing camels and meeting Bruce the donkey. We learned of the value of the area and its resources via Glens commentary on the drive. Afterwards we had lunch at Kings Canyon Resort. Some people swam. Some took the helicopter over the canyon. It was a full day but with naps on the drive and a pit stop at Mt Conners cattle station for ice cream on the way home, it was a comfortable 13hrs. Highly recommend.Written 16 October 2024

- Curious6225700 contributionsIncredible introduction to some of the cultural aspects of UluruWe learned so much from our Aṉangu guide Valerie, who was super generous in sharing some of the stories that make Uluru such a special place for the Aṉangu people. Our driver and guide Jesse was also really engaging and knowledgeable and shared some other stories and knowledge that we loved hearing. We would strongly recommend this tour for anyone interested in learning about Uluru as more than just a geological feature in the desert.Written 30 September 2024

Very Disappointed. I booked this tour for late June, had paid in full and received confirmation of the booking 3-4 weeks ago and then received notice today that my booking was cancelled. No explanation given and can only assume with peak season they got a group booking that they prioritized or something similiar. Poor form AAT King!

What a beautiful expetience to see this magnificent light installation at dawn. We took a sunrise tour with ATTKings in Uluru and taken to the site before dawn. We got a view of the vast changing lights from a hill top and then taken down to the flats to walk through the lights. They changed cour every 6 seconds from green to blue to gold and more making it a truly memorable experience. Our guides Sue and Gary were friendly and knowledgable and set up a tea and coffee station with biscuits on our return. This is well worth seeing while visiting Uluru. The bonus is that you get to see the sun rise over Uluru as the light installation fades. Just magical.

Whilst it required an early start from the Hotel, the sunrise field of lights tour was incredible.
After a short walk over a low sandhill, it was an easy walk through the installation with the opportunity to view it from the sandhills or from walking within the display. The size and complexity of the installation was a surprise.
The AATKings' guides pointed out the best way to see the field and set up tea/coffee/hot choc for us at the end as we watched the sun rise.

We chose the field of lights tour after
Friends recommended it. We were disappointed To be honest. The bus ride was on a corrugated dirt road, which was fine but should be in a four wheel drive open air 4x4 truck experience. Then the venue was ok but the canapés were presented to us in little cardboard boxes. Covid or not, it was not up to the expectations I had for the evening. Light well we lasted 2 mins.

My partner and I visited Uluru over the Easter long weekend in April 21.
I was initially SUPER disappointed that the evening tour was booked as this was one of the top tours on my wishlist. I booked the sunrise tour so I wouldn't miss out entirely.
In the end, I am so glad we did the morning tour instead! It was a little chilly and very dark, but we were picked up right from the resort via warm comfy coach and had very wonderful, kind and informative tour guides.
The FOL is just incredible - one of those experiences that exceeds expectations and gives you goosebumps. I would highly recommend checking this out as it really is once in a lifetime. Getting to experience this with an added sunrise over Uluru with the Olgas in the distance was really special.
AAT puts on a lovely breaky snack table with some bickies and tea, coffee, hot chocolate too which was a hit and much appreciated.
The only downside was the AAT did not inform us of our tour time change as a result of the change in daylight savings time. We were told 420am, NOT the actual 5AM, pick up time so we were sitting out front of the campground at this time awaiting pick up. I would recommend re-confirming this with them the day before so you're not up at 330am instead of 430am like we were.

The tiny individually-crafted lights changed colours imperceptibly. Silence made it peaceful and meditative. The walking tracks to and from the viewing platform were clear and there was plenty of room to get a good view. The tour guide was informative and interesting, and very approachable. She took our photo with Uluru in the background - so much better than my selfies.

Having done both sunset and sunrise tours and would 100% recommend this option over the others.
Very easy to book online on the resort website, over the phone or from the tourist information centre in the middle of the resort.
It’s an early start, with pick up from your hotels over 1 hour before sunrise. Which suits us beautiful cause there’s a heatwave and we’re back at the hotel before the temperature reached the 40s.
I feel this is the only tour operator offering sunrise tours, meaning you don’t have a bunch of tourist with you, only those on your bus.
The opportunity to take dark photos and then pictures against the sunrise was phenomenal.
Nicely finished experience with tea, coffee, hot chocolate and biscuits.
10/10, the best way to experience the outstanding Field of Lights exhibition

We went to the Field of Lights Star Pass the night before and wathced the Sunset which was amazing.
In comparison the Uluru Sunrise and Field of Lights was breathtaking. Firstly while it is sad the tourist numbers are down for tourism on the flip side as a tourist it is an incredible opportunity to travel to such a beautiful place and have it practically to yourself. There was 8 of us on the tour and on arrival it was a clear sky so we got to see the night sky and shining stars. The lights were glowing and on the horizon the sunlight was slightly visible so you could see Uluru in a night shot. As we walked through the field of lights it was a different experience in the morning from the night before as they started to dim down. This was my favourite spot to watch the sunrise as it was coming up to the left of Uluru and you could take it all in.
Saul our travel guide was funny, knowledgable, extremely courteous, and we would give him 5 stars out of 5.
**other than having to get out of bed early nothing bad to report it was totally worth it!

Waste of money…. One tiny patch of lights was working, the rest OFF! They knew they wouldn’t be working yet they still happily take your money… this tour would rather take $$ than provide some kind of visitor satisfaction….
DONt book Sunrise, if you are compelled to see Led lights powered by solar do sunset, at least you will have a decent view of Uluṟu at this time of day.

We went here after sunset, with just a field pass, so had to make our own way around the display. We were picked up at our accommodation and returned afterwards (the only way you can get there!). It was an interesting display, given its size and the subtle way the individual lights changed colour. The course we walked was marked only with individual solar lights that can be bought from Bunnings for a dollar or two. Not very robust and easily demolished if you’re focussing on the display and not where you’re walking (guilty as charged!!). There is no other lighting, so you are literally stumbling along in the dark!!

After completing this Sunrise Tour, do customers have enough time getting back hotel and catching the flight 1:20pm at Ayers Rock, NT (AYQ-Connellan) airport?

We were picked up at the front doors of Sails in the Desert by the AAT Kings Coach at 4:30 AM, after all passengers had been picked up from around the resort ring road we arrived in less than 10 minutes, followed by a leisurely stroll along a marked path to an elevated viewing point above the field of light. Then it was another walk down into and through the field, followed by a return to the viewing point for coffee, tea, hot chocolate, bickies and the Sunrise at Uluru. Kata Tjuta was also visible from this point and both rock formations were lite and changed hue with the rising sun. A marvellous way to commence the day - well worth the cost of a ticket. Enjoy. From pick up
On the tour description they give you the key times..pick up at the resort 105 minutes before sunrise and return 30 minutes after sunrise. The site isn't far from the resort.
If timing is supercritical contact the tour operator, AAT Kings, info on the bottom of their tour page
Add the usual front and punctuation to the tour providers address (we can't post links in answers)

How cold will it be at night around 5th August. Also considering doing the field of light dinner but worried it will be too cold in winter? How many people per table?

The days will be beautiful, it warms up early, the nights will be cold but nothing a jacket won't fix, generally it does not get very cold until after 9pm

One of our party of 4 cannot undertake major climbs or long walks. Please let us know if this tour involves such activities. Thanks

You need to be able to get up the steps of the pickup bus, which was a regular coach
The path up the dune and down onto the FoL is graded with some blown sand. I would estimate each section was 100m
The walk around the FoL is flat and there are several benches.
The field is large but you don't have to walk all around to see the intended effect
You can return up to the dune view in your own time. You don't have to go down into the field of you don't wish to.
There are benches at the top.
Can't see why you couldn't carry a small fold up chair if it would give extra confidence
All the guide info is delivered on the bus or at the top. You are lead down to the FoL but not guided around it.
They don't rush you.
A woman using a walking aid (two walk sticks) participated fully in our tour with the help of her friend.
Our personal head torches with a red function were helpful on the dune paths but not required in the FoL.
Hope this helps you decide. The tour operator will also give you good info on what to expect and can probably be more accurate about the distances than I am.

Is this tour best at morning or evening?

The sunrise tour arrives in the dark. You see the full field from the dune top observation area then walk down among it until the predawn light when the lights fade out. See the sun rise on Uluru in front as it emerges from the dark, and on Kata Tjuta behind you, while having a hot drink on the dune top. We liked that you saw the lights and the sunrise
