- 692trishb0 contributionsExpert driving and awesome experienceWhat a stunning, sunny Sydney day to take the Red Bus tour with driver, Adam Goodrich on the 9am bus from Circular Quay this morning. The tour was fantastic as we reminisced touring through the city. His driving skills were brilliant as we wouldn't like to be in those very narrow lanes. Thank you.Written 25 August 2024

- JonInIndy0 contributionsBig Bus 'Big 5' - needed more time!Spent a few extra days, one being the day we arrived, in Sydney before going on a cruise. Decided to purchase the Big 5 ticket, on our 1 full day, which included 24 hr hop on/hop off, Wildlife Zoo, Sealife Aquarium, Madame Tussauds, and the Tower Eye. First off, it is a good way to get around the city to different sights. We never had any issues getting on the 2 level buses - there were always open seats. The recorded commentary, as we rode, was good (and in different languages) and easy to understand through the earbuds that they provided. For the price, it is a great deal if the offered attractions are what you really want to see in 24 hrs. We attempted to see all of the 'Big 5' attractions in one day. We were able to get on the bus at stop 1 as we stayed a few minutes from it. It was suggested we do the Tower Eye last - which we had intended to do first - so that we could go up near sundown. We took the advice, skipped it, and stayed on the bus for about 45 minutes to the other 3 attractions, which were all side by side in the Darling Harbour area. After doing those attractions, we walked across a bridge to go to a sea museum and then caught a Big Bus at a stop that was nearby after we were done. As time is an issue - the bus runs from 9 am to 4 pm - we decided to ride the bus around to a stop we passed earlier in hopes of switching from the red line to the blue line, so we could at least see Bondi Beach. We had a pretty long wait and we started thinking we couldn't ride the blue line loop, get back to another stop to see the Tower Eye, and then catch another bus back to near where we were staying before the last bus ran - the driver told us we could walk back. As my wife started feeling a little ill, we decided to hop back on a red line bus and go back to our hotel. A couple of things in hindsight: * We would have done the Tower Eye first and then the other attractions. * The Big Bus ticket has a barcode - we could have gone to the attractions on a different day, but we would have had to taxi or walk. * If you like walking and sightseeing, it would be easy to hop off at a stop and hop on at another * IMO, Wildlife Zoo is well worth a visit if you want to see animals that are native to Australia. Very nice layout and exhibits. We enjoyed it much more than Taronga Zoo which we did the previous day. Sealife Aquarium was not special - we could have skipped it. Madame Tussauds was fun and we enjoyed it. If there is a must see, it's the Wildlife Zoo. ** The 'Big 5' ticket: One day trying to do the attractions pushes the time. It would be tough to spend time at other sights, such as the Opera House, the Harbour Bridge, museums, or the Rocks if trying to fit in the Big 5 attractions also. If we had stayed more days, we probably would have done a different package, but we did enjoy the ride on the upper deck.Written 15 March 2024
- Marty G0 contributionsDO NOT 🚫 go when it's raining.I'm sure if the weather was better this review would not have even been written but the fact that it was raining, completely changed the experience. I UNDERSTAND they're not responsible for the weather but with rain pouring down, they continued to pack people into the lower part of the bus with most of us standing, no audio descriptions over speakers of sites or locations we were passing. On heavily raining days capacity should be limited to indoor seating only...so people can at least make use of the audio commentary on the provided earbuds. OR..., easy fix: Put in some speakers and play the description over them indoors...otherwise, you're just very overpriced public transit.Written 22 February 2024

- JJOH0 contributionsGreat way to get around the cityWe had the two day pass and did both circuits, one on each day. Each takes about one and a half hours if you just sit on the bus without alighting. The audio feed is informative and works well. It’s a very good way of getting a quick overall view of the city. We did that and then picked specific stops we wanted to get off at to see things. Buses came regularly so we never had a particularly long wait to rejoin at any point. Would definitely recommendWritten 7 December 2023

- Dave P0 contributionsWoefully disorganised waste of timeRidiculously priced "service" that is by no way hop on hop off. Buses every 45 minutes and poorly organised. If I could give it a negative score I would. Don't bother, use the local bus services instead. Thier hours are inadequate for any decent hop on hop off service anyway. The stops are placed nobody goes except the Opera House and Bondi beach.Written 25 March 2023
- Peter M0 contributionsSydney Hop on Hop Off BusThis is an excellent way of seeing Sydney on a Saturday when most of the businesses are closed. They have an excellent audio and on a nice fine day it is nice to sit upstairs. The only thing was the wait times can be 30-40 minutes but they also go to Bondi also so covers a fair distance. I was on the boat and got it from Circular QuayWritten 20 January 2023

Even after end of his duty time, he was kind us to drop us to Sydney tower eyes. We have 3 kids in our group of 9 people. If Adam didn’t help, we’d have to walk all the way which was almost 15 minutes walk from last stoppage of the Bus.Written 28 December 2022
- Paul C0 contributionsDisappointing and poor valueAlready below par experience ruined by unexplained 25 minute wait at one stop looking down from top of bus at long queue of forlorn tourists with tickets in hand unable to get on full bus. Buses were meant to be every half hour and there's no way all of those people would get on the next bus even. It's the holidays so more buses are needed. The bus also waited about 8 minutes at the Aquarium stop. OfWritten 26 December 2022

The bus was ok, clean, neat and tidy. No problems with the audio commentary. The main problem with this is that it is veeeery slooooow. Bus driver takes a long time to sell tickets to people boarding the bus at most stops. The most RIDICULOUS thing is that as the bus reached the Circular Quay stop, all passengers were asked to get off the bus, and wait for 20 minutes for the next bus regardless! NOT GOOD for people with a short time in Sydney! The worst thing was the comment from the driver: "It's not my problem!". They need to add warnings about this rubbish type of service to their brochures. NOT HAPPY :-(

We decided to go on this tour because there was a Chinese commentary available. We tried to catch the early bus at Central Station. It turned up 15 mins late and it then took the conductor another 10 mins to sort out the tickets. No conductor travels with the bus so at some stops it took 10 mins to sort out the tickets. So after 1hr 30 mins we were about half way round near Circular quay. The driver then came and told us the bus was changing route and going to Bondi beach. So we stayed on the bus and ended back where we started. After more dealing with tickets we set off for Bondi arriving 3 hours after we started
We got off at Bondi and later caught a return bus. On the route we stopped outside the Australia Museum and most people got off only to find the Museum is shut and being refurbished. They are too lazy to record new commentary to deal with closures of attractions. Also because they don't use conductors on the bus you spend half your time waiting for the driver to deal with the tickets. The whole thing is designed to maximise revenue and minimise costs with customer service a very low priority

My family are in Sydney for 2 days and thought that we would use the bus tour as a way of seeing the city in a short period of time. The buses were over crowded and had to stand downstairs all the way to Bondi and therefore had no commentary and could not see any of the sights anyway! We had to wait ages for a bus that had space and there was obviously no limit on numbers. We have paid for another day but think we will give it a miss tomorrow. Worst tour bus experience ever!

Thank you for the feedback and we are sorry for not meeting your expectations. Sydney is very busy at the moment with School Holidays, Cruise Ships and New Year's Eve visitors, therefore traffic impacts and the level of customers is very high. We have been informing customers of this and potential delays, however despite this the majority of customers are boarding within our advertised wait times. When buses fill quickly and a customer does not want to wait for the next bus we will on rare occasions allow standing, after informing that commentary will be missing. I am more than happy to investigate your circumstance further if you would like to email me at janep@bigbustours.com with your day and time of travel to Bondi. Regards Jane

This was awful, hot delays where bus change over was not matched up. Very over booked buses, on the day we went the poor staff seemed under a lot of pressure from many annoyed customers. Out of all our attractions this was the most disappointing.

I love hop on hop off tours because they're such a good way to learn what a city has to offer. I was really disappointed in this one. The audio is recorded and is only about 60 seconds for each area, so you listen to a lot more music than narrative. The narrative is pretty brief. It will tell you what I at the stop for you to go see, but very little as to why you should go see it. It also didn't take you directly to several places, like it would say hop off here for the fish market, and you couldn't see the fish market. The audio also seemed to get stuck and repeat itself. This is also the first hop on hop off where when it gets back to stop 1, everyone has to get off and move to the first bus in line. Too bad if you had a really nice spot up top. There was also a lot of confusion when the driver would stop before the audio said why, such as at the railway station. It was still a nice way for a tired tourist to ride around for 4 hours in the afternoon to see what I might want to go back to the next day.

We couldn't make up our minds on what to do and really didn't want to drive the rental car in the city. The bus stopped 1/2 block from condo we were in which made this a great option. We are not at all bus tour folk, but this was pretty cool way to see the entire city! Used our own Bose headphones which worked out really well as it gets a bit windy if you ride on top! Kinda felt like we were in a movie, hair blowing in the wind, sights going by! Some drivers were much better then other, Pete was the best! Some could care less if you were on or not.
The company should think about a better narrator and/or at least have them tell you which stop you are at ad/or mark or number the stops to match the maps given out. We missed a stop or two, so pay close attention. Being in Bondi Beach as our pick up, it is terribly difficult to try and get to the free walking tour or boat rides in time. You really need to days if starting in Bondi.

For those reading through these helpful reviews. Here is a suggestion for a great day out. The tours run every 45 minutes on the red route which stops at all the landmarks across the Sydney City Route. The Blue Route which takes you to Bondi beach is every two hours so it is best to join the 9:30 red route tour at Circular Quay on the corner of George Street and Alfred Streets and do the Red loop as an orientation 9:30am-11:00am. Then have a walk around the rocks for 15-20 minutes before the 11:30am bus departs stop one and joins the Bondi Blue Route Bus at Stop 3 at approximately 11:45am. You can head down to Bondi now and be dropped of at about 12:15pm at Bondi Beach for a 2 hour leisure discovery of Bondi beach, the Bondi Baths and find one of the cool cafes or restaurants to have some lunch. There are also plenty of hip men's hairdressers in Bondi beach area - so maybe a shave. Fish & Chips is a great tradition sitting down on Bondi beach. Then you can re-join the Bondi and bays Blue Tour at 2:15pm and head back through Watsons Bay, Rose, Bay and Double Bay towards the city arriving at Central stop 24 at 3:00pm. a short 30 minutes stroll around central station to see the Grand concourse and head back to stop 24 to meet up with the Red Route Bus which will take you back to Stop 1 Circular Quay past the Fish markets, Maritime Museum, Chinese Gardens, Aquarium, harbour Bridge. the Rocks and you are done.

While using this service made it easier to get around Sydney, there were some problems. Due to traffic, it was often very slow. The first time we were on it, the driver forgot to switch the audio to narrative vs the music. So we wpent our time from Darling Harbor to the Circular Quay mostly listening to music. We found the narrative very poorly done, lacking details about the places we passed. This needs to be reworked. Slower probably than the train and light rail, but it sufficed. The Opal card can be used on the transport network extending beyond the city to the Blue Mountains. I would use a this option next time to choose the train, buses and light rail, which are extensive and easy to get on and off at many stops.

We have used this company all over the world. The day we used it in Sydney was a Saturday and the time between buses was typically about 40-50 minutes. Much longer than advertised. According to the driver it was because of the traffic (definitely not observable from on the bus) and according to the office (when I spoke to them) they didn't have many buses on because it was quiet. But overall it was less than satisfactory to have to wait that long. Secondly, the commentary did not match the stops, often meaning the driver often stopped before the commentary said to. We missed 2 stops that we wanted. When we got back to stop 1 we waited for nearly 30 mins before moving off. All in all...not value for money.

We didn’t use this service as much as I had planned but it was pretty good. The routes are good and the narration ismwell done although it took us two attempts to find a seat with working audio. They have an app but it’s not very helpful.
The biggest problem we had was the inefficiency of the service. If you get off for a stop you can be waiting 30 minutes or so for the next bus. Mornings are also much worse than afternoons. Our bus stopped for 20-30 minutes at Circular Quay in the morning as they sold tickets to 30 or so passengers. We didn’t encounter any long stops in the afternoon.
IMO it’s best used for seeing the city (especially in the afternoon) but not for hopping on and off.

The Big Bus Tours' sightseeing formula has been designed to provide a flexible approach to city discovery. The hop on, hop off facility enables you to get off a number of exciting places and explore at your leisure. When arriving back to Circular Quay (Stop 1), there is a transfer of passengers between buses, before the bus in front departs. The bus waiting at Stop 1 will depart after the next transfer. Transfer time and frequency is seasonal. We thank you for your feedback and for the time you spent with us.

There are two routes that are covered by the buses. The city centre and the iconic Bondi Beach. If you are limited for time, then I suggest you do the city bus first so you can see the famous Opera House and Harbour Bridge. Because our bus was packed and we could not get on they extended our ticket for the time lost which was good pr.

Thank you for your review and we are pleased you enjoyed both of our routes. Sydney was very busy with travellers after the New Year therefore thank you for your patience. You can get on and off the bus at any of the stops so you don't have to start at any particular stop. Just buy your tickets in advance online. When we were there the red line through the city ran from 9a to 4p and the blue line to Bondi Beach ran from 9:30a to 3:30p. But I don't know if the hours change during different seasons. You can see the stops and hours at the bigbustours site

Hi Aftabfarooqi,
Although Red is the City route it was the longest, I think from memory it took approximately 2 hours to do the full cycle (no hop-off).
Blue is Bondi Beach route and it took approximately 90 minutes in total (although we did hop-off at one stop).
Hope this helps :)

Hi Kevin T,
So sorry for the late reply.
Download the BigBus app and it will give you real time estimates for each stop for both routes (we found this very helpful).
Start time from memory was approximately 9:30am but you can hop onto the nearest stop which is most convenient for you.
If you have any questions the Bus Drivers were very helpful and friendly too.
Hope this wasn’t too late of information 😅
