About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Navigator5536960 contributionsAbuse of power by Master Karen, no customer careNeeded to get from Watsons Bay to Manly which with the regular ferries necessitates a long trip via Circular Quay. Captain Cook is a private operator which runs a direct service - and seems the monopolisation of this route has got to one of its Master's heads. At Watsons there's one wharf and when I arrived there was a line of people with no signage or direction which queue is for which ferry (I saw later usually one of the crew comes ashore to gather the right people, as it's pretty confusing). The small red and white Captain Cook ferry was moored up and was scheduled to leave in the next minute or 2, and the deckhands were adjusting the lines. I didn't want to miss the direct ferry, so I approached the loading/unloading area on the wharf, still 3-5m away from the water's edge or any mooring lines or moving ramps, and no risk to myself or anybody whatsoever, to ask if I could get on. Cue much commotion from the deckhands that I shouldn't have been there, that the queue was at the top, so I of course made my way up and got in line. After some time during which it became clear they had been still mooring up, passengers disembarked, one of the crew went ashore to gather passengers, and the line of people began boarding, the Master of the boat had emerged on the deck and informed me that he was not letting me on board, due to perceived dangerous behaviour. He'd waited until the moment of boarding and after I'd waited in line to inform me of this. I explained when I approached the wharf I hadn't known if the boat was coming or going, and had been keen not to miss the ferry, as my family was in Manly and other routes were much longer. In his words he "didn't care" and I had to "find another way" (which he well knew was longer and/or $100+ taxi ride). A Master should not be so unaware of the layout of the wharf, so inconsiderate of customers if running a public service, or so panicked and dramatic in a very calm situation. It is extremely easy to inadvertently access the loading/unloading area, via the route I took to get back to the queue. Me having been positioned where I was on the wharf for a few seconds had not created a dangerous situation and even if it had, without any drama I had joined the queue once it was clear it was for this boat. The Master would no doubt like any "diligent" Union member parrot the line that safety is paramount, which it is of course, but this doesn't explain why he waited until the moment of boarding to raise his concerns with me or exercise his authority - seems he took personal pleasure in the amount of inconvenience he was able to cause me. There was no danger, immediately once the rules were clear I adhered to them, but in his own words he "didn't care" and seemed incapable of critical thinking in a calm situation, none of which bodes well for a Master operating a key tourist and maritime link for Sydney Harbour. Maybe he was having a bad day. I understand from the next ferry operator that there's a big culture problem within Captain Cook, many employees leaving, unhappy staff, which doesn't surprise me at all based on this Master's attitude; also judging by some of the other comments online about customer service.Written 11 February 2025
- C912VTsaraha0 contributionsThere are much better cruises than this oneI thought I booked the same cruise I booked two years ago when I took a group of business colleagues on a tour of the harbor - a bunch of folks who had never been to Sydney before. That last time we went to all around on a much smaller boat to Barangaroo and to some little beach area and it stopped for like 30 minutes where there were lots of outdoor places to grab a drink and under the Sydney Harbor Bridge. This cruise was NOT THAT. I do NOT recommend this cruise. The boat went so slowly that there was no breeze. It did not go under the Sydney Harbor Bridge or the little beach. We basically did nothing. The boat two years ago gave had a commentary on what we were seeing. This one you had to have your ear buds with you - which they did not tell you - and do it on your own on your phone. There were very limited chairs on the top deck.Written 9 February 2025

- BostonTraveler790 contributionsPhenomenal experience in SydneyWe really enjoyed this dinner cruise. Other reviewers are correct that, at least during the height of summer, the cruise finishes before sunset—so you don't see the sunset from the boat, but at least you're dropped off in central Sydney and can get some very nice sunset views anyhow. We upgraded our ticket for premium food and a guaranteed window seat. The price wasn't that much more than the standard ticket so we felt this was worth it. The food was excellent and our server was very nice. She kept apologizing because I think she knew the boat was understaffed. Be prepared that you can't really just order a drink anytime you want it - you need to be ready with your order when your server comes to your table, because if you don't get it then, she may not be back for another 45 minutes. Not her fault, and she definitely did the best she could to provide good service to all of her assigned tables. One thing to note is that in between dinner courses, you can leave your table and go up on deck to admire the views without the obstructions of the window frame. We definitely recommend doing this!Written 25 January 2025
- Budadeb0 contributionsA wonderfully delicious and memorable evening dinner cruise! This was one of the loveliest evening dinner cruise experiences we have ever had. The food was absolutely delicious as were the wine pairings and the scenery and photo opportunities were wonderful as was the staff service. - markl7960 contributionsFabulous dining on the Sydney HarbourThe cruise of Sydney Harbour was only outdone by the dinner itself! Unfortunately it was overcast/rainy most of the day, so the sunset happened behind the clouds, but still well worth the investment. Between my wife and I, we tasted both entrees, both main courses and both desserts - they all were fabulous but we agree that the spinach & pumpkin salad and the branzino were our favorites; but we were split between the lemon/lime tart and chocolate dessert.Written 17 January 2025
- torbeng6340 contributionsA waste of timeWe joined the dinner cruise. Nice ship, but the rest? Mediocre food, mediocre service, uninterested musicians, lousy food. - keishb20140 contributions30th birthday long lunch cruise on the harbourWe went for the 3 hour long lunch experience on the Sydney harbour. From start to finish everything was so professional. It was calm and relaxing with fantastic view points. Entree was salmon for myself and pumpkin salad for my partner, then both did the beef cheek, lemon tart and choc pebble for dessert. Food was fresh and delicious, better than I expected. I enjoyed that the vessel came in and out of the harbour and we weren’t out on sea for the whole 3 hours. Vessel was also so clean and the staff were friendly to us. Thank you for making my 30th birthday lunch captain cook cruises.Written 16 January 2025

The zoo was spectacular. However, we got there before the zoo opened and still most of the animal encounter experiences were fully booked upon arrival. That was disappointing, but we were able to have a koala encounter which was informative and very cute. I have visited various zoos from around the world, and this was definitely a top-notch experience. Also taking the ferry there was fun and unique.

Great Zoo for big and little kids to enjoy. We were a group of 4 adults and we all enjoyed the ferry ride and zoo very much. We arrived at 9:30am and the first return ferry back with this pkg wasn’t until 1:10pm. We were all done by 11:30am so we chose to purchase a separate ferry ticket back.

The Taronga Zoo is a great place to explore and see all the animals while in the Sydney area. If you go with children, you could easily spend a full day there. They also have a hotel at the zoo, in case you wanted to do night walks to see the nocturnal animals in their natural habitat. That would be very cool to do also! I would definitely recommend this trip, but depending upon your available time, you may want to take a regular taxi ferry, as they run more frequently than the Captain Cook Cruises.

This review is of the tour operator, not the zoo.
We opted for this operator, despite it being more expensive, as it departed from Darling Harbor. We purchased our tickets on line (recommended and lowers cost) and walked down and was told we would need to wait almost 2 hours. The alternative was to walk to circular quay (where the cheaper ferries departed from anyway) and catch one of the more regular ones 🤦♀️
Coming back was just as bad.
The timetable is not made available until you get to the ferry.
The staff are lovely. The boats are very clean and it is an easy trip.
I Would not recommend using this operator for this tour.

Don’t buy this package! It’s literally double the cost of the main entrance fee for the Zoo and even the ferry passes. We also had to wait 90mins for the ferry and ended up buying passes with another company so we didn’t have to wait so long! Not to mention it’s in US dollars not AU. Mistakes made, lessons learnt!

The ferry ride was fine. It’s only 15 minutes from Circular Quay to the zoo. Zoo was disappointing – not a lot of animals available to be seen; the koala experience for which we paid extra was a five minute experience that you could’ve had in the regular koala exhibit; only saw one kangaroo! Lion exhibit was closed. Ferry ride back to Circular Quay was fine. We were able to extend to Kings Wharf where we could visit waterfront of Darling Harbor. They then brought us back to Circular. Quay - ferry experience was a 5 the zoo was a 3!

We booked this package as it incorporate the zoo ticket & covenient/fast ferry transport to the zoo. Its not a very big ferry compared to the public one but a nicer one & less crowded. However one really need to plan your zoo visit trip timing well due to limited return ferry times. Infact, there are only 3 return timings from Toranga Zoo & its about 2 hours wait. So if you miss any of them, either wait very long for next one or pay again, to take the public one

We started the trip from Darling Harbour from Wharf 1 (Tourist map at Darling Harbour still showing Pier 26). We headed to the top deck .. it was not raining then. Would have been great to have the seats dried off before picking up the first group of passengers. Amazing views from the ferry.
Return trip from Taronga was chaotic with passengers from various operators waited at the pier. Captain Cook Cruise were not able to confirm which side of the 'pier we should wait at as there were various ferry operators using the pier which is understandable.
We arrived for the 3.30pm ferry 1.5 hours early as we couldn't afford to miss the ferry back. I queued up at the first door on side A. Come 3.30pm the pier was packed. Captain cook ferry came and the ferry assistant decided to open the door FURTHEST to the ferry entrance. The first door was just facing the ferry entrance! There were alot of upset customers as the people who waited the longest was not able to board the ferry and the next scheduled ferry was at 4.40pm. They did sent another ferry soon after to pick the remainder of the passengers up. The passengers who missed out on the 3.30 ferry were now queing at the second door, however when the next ferry arrived, they opened the first door! Had it been busy then, we would have missed out again. If one wants more frequency in terms of ferry times to Circular Quay, my suggestion is to use the normal ferries

Very good zoo but beware of summer crowds on weekends. Because we could only go on a Sunday ( free day on an Australian tour) it was crowded. We did our best by leaving on the earliest Captain Cook Ferry (9:00AM) which helped us. Bird and Seal shows were great. Later shows were so crowded we didn't try to fight the crowd. However, we did see a lot of Australian animals and the grounds are pleasant albeit a fair amount of construction going on this summer. Koala outdoor viewing area was a favorite! Actually saw a Koala jump from one branch to another which I understand is rare to see! The ferry ride from Circular Quay was fun and efficient (roomy and clean)!

Taking the ferry to the zoo makes for a fun day. There are also great views of the city from the zoo itself. Taronga is somewhat spread out, but you can see most of it in about 4 hours. At the moment, they seem to have several exhibits undergoing renovations, so they seem to be continually improving the facilities. KIds would really enjoy doing this while in Sydney!

All in one ticket, which you can by from the booth at Circular Quay ( the main transport hub), enjoy Sydney, I loved it, ps a little tip, if you buy the Opal card ( travel card) you can use it any time (usually cost is distance related i.e the further you go the more it costs, but the travel is cheap anyway), but on Sunday anywhere is one dollar, so go to the furthest place (eg Manly beach, or Paramatta)

Hi, Captain Cook Cruises operate Ferries to Taronga throughout the day - I am not aware that purchasing the package stipulates you must catch a particular ferry. The first of which departs Circular Quay at 9:15am (weekday) / 9:35am (weekend). It would be best to review their timetable online to plan your arrival/departure times appropriately.

I would go Friday and if possible go early. When we were leaving the zoo, around 1 pm, there was a line for the tram to get to the entrance. You’ll enjoy the many animals they house.
