About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- kelliep8800 contributionsBut of everything for everyone so kept us revisiting the old daysTreat day tour operator was wonderful efficient comfortable service was amazing Museum was so larger then expected the tours run are great specific exhibitions old relic cars loved the mostWritten 9 February 2025
- KazP1700 contributionsNot worth it unfortunatelyThis was a waste of time tbh. We went to the Pompeii exhibit which was ok, but the rest of the museum was a bit disappointing.Written 24 January 2025
- mmao0 contributionsAvoid if you like museums. Go if you like watching audiovisuals. An awful museum. Very few objects and generally these are very second rate (a twenty year old fireman's helmet as an example). Lots of audio visuals (which could be watched via YouTube) and wasted space. And the signs are almost illegible. The Australian Museum in Sydney, the Powerhouse Museum (also Sydney) are so much superior as is the South Australian Museum. A waste of time.Written 2 January 2025
- bella23530 contributionsVery disappointing, confusing and a waist of time.Very disappointing confused displays at amateur level. No real theme and absolutely no European history of Australia. Whilst the First Nations historically is critical and should be celebrated the European history is very important to many people to ignore it is not what a national Museum should be about. I never really understood the word woke till I visited this place.Written 30 November 2024
- Aviation C0 contributionsGreat place for education!Great place with lots of interesting displays. The information cards for each item might take a while to read, so take a picture and read it at home. Very descriptive as well. Learnt a lot there!Written 3 November 2024
- davidlZ3911EA0 contributionsI shall never returnWhat a total waste of space, not to mention taxpayers' money. The museum is an utter disgrace, and anyone involved in its planning should be facing dismissal. The aboriginal exhibit was supposedly downstairs. However, everywhere one looked at any point in the museum, it was nothing but aboriginal art etc. There was an FJ Holden, but that was the only item in the entire "museum" that was not woke in nature. The only redeeming feature was that we visited on a weekend when parking was free, as I would have hated to have been charged for parking to view such a worthless exhibit. I shall never go there again.Written 1 November 2024
- islandboi60 contributionsWonderful Museum and Exhibition!Specifically visited to see the Egyptian exhibition which was wonderful and spent several hours exploring. The building its self is wonderful, loved the whole experience!Written 6 October 2024
- AussieVG0 contributionsExhibition halls suit all agesI love a visit to this museum, and it was a pleasure to revisit as a parent with the toddler. The exhibition halls are a great mix and perfectly engaging for all ages. We also visited the discovery centre which was brilliant. We did get lost a bit, more signs back to the exit in the outdoor space would be welcome.Written 14 September 2024
- kevins9570 contributionsLuke warm coffee, bewareThe exhibitions were very interesting, the museum structure was well worth looking at. Please don't purchase a coffee in the cafe, it was the worst my wife and I have ever had, barely luke warm, I told a staff person on the way out but I think that was a waste of breath.Written 20 August 2024
- marcuslambertus0 contributionsA very interesting visit. This is a great museum. We visited for the Egyption exhibition, but the overall vibe of the place is great. Staff are excellent.Written 15 August 2024
- Pip R0 contributionsExtraordinary Egypt ExhibitionWe went to the Egyptian Exhibition. It was worth every single bit of the $25 entry fee. I went with a friend and spent just about all day there. The exhibition was busy, but not crowded and you could take all the time you wanted to appreciate the experience. The National Gallery of Australia could take some serious leaves out of the Museum’s book on how to really do an exhibition. I appreciated being able to see all the objects up close to view the sheer detail of their construction. I particularly valued the sensitivity and respect that the Mummies were given too. The Tour Guide who was there was very very well informed about the Exhibition and he clearly loves his work. This exhibition alone was worth every bit of the 3 1/2 hr drive to get to Canberra. I’d do it again for this exhibitionWritten 8 August 2024
- AnhArmaan0 contributionsBrilliant Ancient Egypt ExhibitionWe came here this weekend to see the Discovering Ancient Egypt exhibition .. a truly amazing collection spanning 3000 years of cultural and spiritual history on loan from the Egyptian and Nubian Collection of the Dutch National Museum of Antiquities. Central to their belief system were their gods and their own journey to the afterlife. Impressive parts of the exhibition for me were the variety of sarcophagus on display all customised to the interned. The separate room with the mummies was very sobering (& rightly no photography was allowed of the mummies). At the end of it all one can’t be left to be both amazed by this rich civilization as well as being a bit troubled by the removal of mummies from their resting places thereby interfering with their journey to their afterlife. I don’t know if there can be a solution to such a paradox when we have such a thirst for discovery. All-in-all an amazing exhibition, well worth seeing.Written 4 August 2024
- mariesL6833IW0 contributionsA great FREE experienceWhy do you tell people it costs money to go to the museum? It is free to enter and look around most of the museum. Tours are totally optional.Written 17 July 2024
- Q7840EUdanl0 contributionsPreserving Australian & First Nations History. Our first attraction to visit in Canberra, headed there early on the Sunday morning, firstly to have breakfast in the cafe and then explore the museum. Although many areas of the building were barricaded and closed to visitors for renovations and extensions, we still discovered enough interesting exhibits to view until lunchtime. We enjoyed the Great Southern Land exhibition, the indigenous content, the story of colonisation and betrayal, the wonderful paintings and art pieces that depict a rich ancient culture and so much more.Written 18 June 2024
- AustTrail0 contributionsEgyptian exhibition was excellentWe visited this museum for the first time to see the Egyptian exhibition. It was a fascinating visit and although the tickets were a bit pricey, the artefacts on display were well presented. The display was world class and I recommend this to all who visit Canberra. The exhibition will be open until September 2024. We did not have time to see the other exhibits but the building itself was spacious and seemed well designed. Will return to look at the other displays.Written 11 June 2024

I was only filling in a short time slot but I certainly will be back to this really interesting place. Because of Covid there are no regular group tours, but one can wander around for hours looking at the intriguing and interesting displays in his place.
In the First Australians exhibition there was a message wall, which had some profoundly moving words, a reminder of the strong connection to Country of our First Nations People.
On my way out there was a lady - a guide outside who explained the Garden of Dreams. Wow! She was very informative! There is much more than meets the eye, is all I will say.

on in Octyober is the Rome exhibition that is as usual well curated; displays and information very good; I suggest the audio tour to assist if you are not a Rome scholar. As well, nit to be missed is the Exhibition on maralinga, where Menzies PM allowed our British masters to test atom bombs in the north of SA and so damage all involved including my father who died of radiation poisoning.. Very important now for citizens to develop support for ICAN and to push the Australian government into signing an anti-nuclear treatment before the US startys a terrible war, eg with China..

We learned so much. Highlight of our trip! Our guide was fantastic. The museum itself is awesome, but our guide brought it to life for us.

The National Museum of Australia is a unique building, built in deconstructivist style, representing a number of circular knots, which includes Dreamtime themes. The National Museum explores the social history of Australia, and the people and events that made the nation, The Museum has the world's largest collection of Aboriginal bark paintings, and an extensive collection of stone artifacts.
