About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Stephen P0 contributionsInterestingBooked in for the 90min tour which was enjoyable only saw a fraction of the site as it is so large. Knowledgeable guide who is an up & coming athlete. Disappointing to see some sports like volleyball that don’t get virtually any Govt funding where as other sports such as basketball get a lot of money & athletes are fully subsidised. Worth the small fee.Written 24 February 2020
- silkybantom0 contributionsSports fans a mustDid the $20 tour. 90 min. Young contender Keely Small (800m) and her even younger long jump peer (Katie? with stress fractures) took little old me around the facilities. That was more fun than the actual facilities. I got to pick their brains. Very mature and engaging girls. From the bus stop i walked past the green machine training oval and the boys were going thru drills. Good morning for sports nuts like me.Written 17 December 2019
- givergifts0 contributionsgifatPass is a Christmas present..however actually not an actual "pass" but just confirmation of booking with price included which is not so good so far as giving a gift..otherwise satisfactory. megWritten 5 December 2019
- Neville R0 contributionsAIS tourInteresting tour. You tour around all the sporting areas used by the AIS scholarship athletes. Just dont eat at the cafe, overpriced and not very nice.Written 27 October 2019
- 494alicee0 contributionsSporting dedicationMy 12 year old daughter’s choice of what to see in Canberra, she loves sports unlike her mother, however saying that I (her mother) actually found it interesting and appreciate the dedication and time that our elite athletes put into their training and sporting careers. Found it interesting about the difference in funding and facilities between the different sports. It’s a 90 minute tour with one of the athletes, which included 30 minutes of interactive games which all 3 children enjoyed and wished it was longer!Written 10 October 2019
- stuartandkaryn0 contributionsDedication plus...No wonder our athletes do so well...this is a very interesting experience to see how hard they train...Written 7 October 2019
- C5619HDdianah0 contributionsGreat insightGreat place to see all the hard work our athletes go through. Your was great but it would of been good to see some of the ovals and fields. Tour was worth it.Written 29 September 2019
- betr0ss0 contributionsTake the timehaving bought the "3 in fun pass" our first call was at the Australian Institute of sport. The chance to involve yourself in some of the Olympic events was mind boggling. The tour guide was incredible with the knowledge he espoused.before we knew it, the tour had finished. Questacon was our next call, we only loaded the parking meter for 3 hours which was up in about 20 minutes. Cockington green was to be the final destination but we were side tracked by the dynasors and the day had been spent. Fortunately we have 12 months to use the pass and can then revisit one of the places again. Suggestion, Allow a full day for Questacon by itself. This pass is value for moneyWritten 28 September 2019
- LMO650 contributionsVery informativeWe did the 90 minute tour with Jenny. This tour is quite good the first part is quite fun with you being able to play a few sports like the Champs then onto a variety of facilities within the complex whilst it had been a considerable amount of years since my last visit this place has certainly expanded and we found the tour quite interesting. Good luck Jenny hope your Olympic dreams become a reality you added a personal insight into what some of our athletes do to become champions.Written 15 September 2019
- Hgranz0 contributionsDo not stay at the AIS residencesIf you’re looking to take a school group, stay there at your own peril. We were absolutely disgusted with our experience there. Dining hall - mostly nice staff, but the main woman was rude, obnoxious and had an unjustified air of self importance. Didn’t allow teachers who spent breakfast looking after children take a piece of toast out of the dining hall. Teachers went hungry instead. Food was good, not great. Disappointing. Kitchenhands were rude and ignored staff and attempted to discipline students (inappropriately of course, and in a way that undermined teachers). Also be aware that if any student is sick they have to be quarantined for 48 hours- not allowed in dining hall, and staff attempted to put an 11 year old child by themselves in a room when they were sick. Rooms are dated, students have to share 3 toilets between 24. Beds are thin, no air con, and water temp and pressure in bathroom varies from freezing cold to burning hot. Was charged for the price of a new mattress because one mattress got wet with water. They have no clue what it’s like to look after kids. Might be ok if you have high school kids, but I don’t know why they even allow primary school kids when they are completely ill-equipped to meet their needs. Worst Canberra camp experience we have ever had. We will never stay there again and would not recommend it to anyone.Written 13 September 2019
- blaintm0 contributionsExcellentWe took a group of approx 50 year 9 students to the AIS whilst on a school visit to Canberra. The staff at the AIS were excellent and more than happy to answer the plethora of questions the kids had. Even the non sporty kids really enjoyed the visit, in particular watching the athletes train and then the fun of the experience centre. I would strongly recommend the AIS as a place worth visiting for adults and teens.Written 12 September 2019
- 537craigb0 contributionsInformativeAn informative tour with a young member of the AIS. This tour runs for approximately 90 minutes and shows you all aspects of the institute.Written 9 September 2019
- MarkHeyink0 contributionsInformativeWe visited the AIS with our two young children at the very end of the school holidays- there were lots of touring school groups, and it was very busy. Our tour guides were athletes at the AIS and were very knowledgable about the AIS. We spent the first half hour in Sportex, a interactive sports display. It was fun, but a few things were broken and we ended up being in there with another large school group of about 60 kids. As a result, we were not able to try out all of the displays. We then went in to the training centres- the pool, basketball courts, volleyball and gymnastics. It was great to see these spaces, but there were not many athletes around which was a bit disappointing. Overall , it was an informative visit but a bit overpriced for what we got.Written 1 August 2019
- AdamLeaves0 contributionsGood conference venue with free parkingI attended three days of conference here. Very relaxed free parking and easy finding the venue. Good facilities and well worth considering as a conference venue in CanberraWritten 5 July 2019
- Herecomethehumphreys0 contributionsInsightfulWe attended the Sunday morning tour, which meant that it was nice and quiet! Tour guide was very informative yet relaxed! We felt $20 was a fair price for 90 mins, as it was a Sunday there were no athletes training so something to bare in mind! Also make sure you wear your active wear for the Sportex area where you can get hands on with some simulators!Written 30 June 2019

The AIS is sadly a white elephant. An amazing sports complex that was built to counter Australia's poor showing at the Montreal Olympics (1976) when the Australian team failed to collect a gold medal it is now sadly in need of love, attention and a cash injection which will unfortunately never come.
Up until 2013, the AIS offered scholarships to athletes across 36 programs in 26 different sports. After that the national sports funding model has meant that sports have moved away from Canberra to Western Australia, and Queensland and the centre is now a shadow of its former self.
That's not to say that the AIS isn't worth visiting. The Sportex centre is a series of virtual sports simulators designed to test your reactions, row or ride a bike or see how long you can balance for. It's a fun centre and ideal for kids and teenagers.
The tours are well conducted and informative and it's a nice setting. The cafe and gift shop are also pretty good.
What's sad about the facility is that it's slowly decaying. The pool is clean and bright, but no longer state of the art, the same with the arena and nearby Canberra Stadium which still hosts the Brumbies and Raiders is a functional but out-dated stadium.
Ultimately the AIS will gradually decline, the facilities are too expensive to bulldoze now (in 2024) but in a decade or so the ACT government will do a swap-deal with the federal government (who are the landlords of the site) and build houses on the site (which is on good road networks). Until then take a trip to see what was (albeit temporarily) the home of Australia's sporting success.

A great place to be at if you are visiting Canberra. Our tour guide explained about the different buildings, which was very descriptive. We even got to see Aussie athletes training. Sadly, Sportex disappointed me as there were limited games and it was very small.

Our exceptionally good value tour of the AIS provided wonderful insights into the lives and demands on our elite sportspeople. Although there were only two of us the full tour went ahead with Volleyroo Will Kay as our personal guide. Thanks Will for a great morning - undoubtedly one of the highlights of our Canberra visit.

On a recent trip to Canberra with our grandchildren we did the AIS tour . Our tour guides were Tom and Tulle from our men’s and women’s volley ball teams. What great ambassadors they are for the the AIS and Australia. The tour went so quickly as they kept the whole family engaged , especially my nine year old grandson . Well done Tom and Tulle

When in Canberra a visit to the AIS is probably on most people's lists; it was for us. We did the tour, as you can't go anywhere without a guide (locked doors everywhere). These give you a flavour of the operation, although mostly it's looking at empty halls, gyms or sports equipment. You might be lucky to meet a real athlete (in addition to your guide), we did in Bowyn Beatty who is shortly off to Sacremento. However, you are left with a feeling that there is so much more to see. The exterior of most buildings leaves a bit to be desired, but the insides are all immaculately decked-out.

It was an amazing experience. The games area for the first half was so much fun, everyone loved it. The tour was great, and our tour guide could answer all of our questions. I would definitely recommend going here if you visit Canberra.

What an incredible morning tour. Mali Towers 18. (Volleyball) was able to take us around and give us an insight into the grounds, their history, the facilities and was able to answer our many questions. Emilija Dakic U17 Saphires (basketball) later joined us. It was great to get an insight of what a usual day for these elite athletes. Thankyou AIS.

This was a fantastic tour, and our guide Tim was really knowledgeable and engaging. I'm a Canberra local and I had no idea this tour even existed - am so glad that we went. The experience room was so much fun, and I will be trying to organise another visit there just for grownups! Thank you!
