About the operator

- Wellykiwis0 contributionsMine was bigger than his!!Did the farm tour, fishing and platter. During their 'down' period so we fished for longer than normal. Mine was about 80cm and hubby's was about 25!!! I had one on within first 5 minutes. A few got off but thats fishing. Great tour, fantastic platter - raw fish, fish balls, fish skewers, sping rolls, batterd fish. Very friendly and very professional. Neck cover a great touch. Highly recommendWritten 18 November 2024
- Wellykiwis0 contributionsHighly recommended. I got a big one!Husband and I did farm tour, tasting platter and fishing. The young guy (Cody I think) was great. Friendly and knowledgeable. The fish platter was divine. Very tasty and just the right size. The fishing was so much fun. I got an 80cm and lost a few. Hubby got one half that size that we ate for tea. Highly recommend this place. It's 30 mins out of Port Douglas. Whole farm is well run and worth every cent.Written 2 November 2024

- kristensO6493IY0 contributionsGreat family activity - interesting, fun and great food! Our family of six had no idea how to fish. Michael took us on a really interesting tour of the farm, then got us started learning to cast. He and Jay helped everyone to have a great time. They were so helpful and patient, and everyone had the chance to bring in a Barra. When we were done we headed over for lunch and the food was awesome - genuinely delicious fish. We'll be looking out for Daintree Saltwater Barramundi at the fish markets when we go home. Thanks to all the team for an awesome day!Written 4 October 2024

- herschellb20160 contributionsGreat Day of FishingDid the farm tour as well as the fishing. Great day out. Worthwhile experience. Seeing the look on Hubby’s face as he caught a 90cm trophy Barra was worth the whole experience! We will be back again when in the area.Written 15 July 2024
- peterwB1774WM0 contributionsGreat fishing experienceThe friendly and knowledgeable staff gave us a great tour, and ensured our fishing experience was successful in catching and releasing some lovely Barramundi. The Barramundi tasting plate provided was delicious. I thoroughly recommend Hook-A-Barra, for a fun filled day.Written 26 May 2024
- josh4080 contributionsNot to be Missed in Port DouglasWe had a wonderful time here and were glad we chose the 4 hr plus experience where we were given an insight on the workings of a barramundi farm. A lot of credit must go to the extremely informative and effervescent Michael who regaled us with facts and figures about the barramundi and the farm. Lunch of barramundi and chips and the spicy barra burger was excellent. We topped off the day by reeling in two whoppers of barramundi! An exceptional day, indeed. Thank you Michael.Written 23 May 2024
- Kerri W0 contributionsA must do!!Wow!! What a great experience!! Michael was our guide.. he was fantastic.. the tour the food and the fishing was 10 out of 10.. Nike It!! Just Do It.. we even had a rare experience of seeing a Hippo enter the water to release a snagged lure!! Ha ha ha!! Great bunch of guys!Written 18 May 2024
- Britt R0 contributionsHighlight of our trip!Absolute- must do experience. We caught the shuttle organised by the farm from Port Douglas on pick up Michael introduced himself and instantly we felt welcomed.. Michael led us on a tour around the farm which was very interesting and engaging and spoke about how the farm operates as well as the damages caused by the recent flooding caused by cyclone Jasper. We were saddened to learn that over 60% of their operations were damaged because of their flooding including some of their barramundi being unfortunately released into the Daintree river (great fishing now for the locals!) After our tour we had a really lovely lunch of fish and chips (other options including chicken available) which was cooked locally on the farm. Then we were into fishing! As someone with minimal fishing experience we were taught the tips and tricks on how to catch the barramundi and ended up catching two fish each, two of which were nearly 80cm!! It wasn’t just a fishing experience. We appreciated how caring the operators were of the fish and witnessed this first hand with their fishing tactics and release techniques. All of their operations consider the fish, wildlife and Daintree forest and what is best for the environment. Highly, highly recommend. Be sure to take a long sleeve shirt, hat and sunglasses as you are outside. Can’t wait to go back with family!Written 14 May 2024
- Kate M0 contributionsGreat way to fishGreat day! Michael picked us up in Port Douglas & was friendly & polite from the start. We did a farm tour with Micheal which was interesting & informative. For lunch we had Barra fish & chips which were cooked to perfection. Then the fun started, under to the guidance of Michael we put our lines in & my god those Barra do bite & do put up fight. Thank you to Steve & the fabulous team at the Barra farm & especially to Micheal our top guide for great day.Written 29 April 2024
- Chris T0 contributionsThanks, MichaelIf there was an option to award six stars, we would. Our guide, Michael, was a very informative and knowledgeable guide. His tips on technique were spot on, ensuring good catches. Thanks, Michael!Written 9 April 2024
- T9897BXmichelles0 contributionsFishing, lunch and a farm tourMy husband and I went on a tour of the farm then fished for some trophy barramundi. The staff was very friendly. We were able to fish with Fly rods and spinner rods. The lunch was delicious. I had the spicy barramundi fried fish sandwich and my husband had the fish tacos. I caught the biggest fish at 89cm.Written 27 March 2024

We are Cairns locals and I had read mostly really great reviews on Trip Advisor for Hook A Barra, so I thought this would be an awesome school holiday surprise for my 10 year old son. (We have some fishing experience)
Drove almost 2 hours to leave Hook A Barra feeling disappointed and ripped off.
We were advised that we were only allowed to fish in one pond along with approx 12 other people. The staff were helpful and did try to ensure a fish was caught, however this was done by throwing food into the pond, then casting the line amongst the food, in which the staff member hooks the barra for you then passes the rod over for you to reel in - when the fish is close to the bank, they then scoop it up and place it on the bank for you to take a photo of / with. My son reeled in one Barra as mentioned above, however i caught nothing.
Pretty disappointing, considering i paid over $80 from Bookme.com ( Glad I didn't pay fully price)
Not really my idea of fishing....
My son's comment was, "this isn't even real fishing, its cheating."
After the "Hook A Barra"experience session of 1 hour was completed we thought we would get some lunch from the cafe, the guy in the kitchen said to order over at the other counter. We waited 5 minutes to be served, however no one was in sight, so we gave up and walked out.
Unfortunately I would NOT recommend this experience nor return again :(

Thankyou for your feedback.
I'm sorry you didn't get the chance to try our fish and chips. They're pretty good!
The fishing was exceptionally slow at the weekend due to the wet weather cooling down the water so quickly. I know the guys were trying a new method to try and get the fish to bite. It appears it was successful in the sense your son managed to reel one in despite the conditions. We wont be making this apart of the regular experience as usually there is no need to "cheat".
We get a huge range of expectations from a variety of different guests and we try to cater for the group and conditions as they are on the day.
We hope you change your mind and give us another go in the future.

This attraction is new since we were last in Port Douglas 9 years ago so we thought we’d give it a go .
I originally planned to be there for lunch , but unfortunately due to COvID , the restaurant has been closed since 2021 . I believe they are still contemplating whether to reopen , depending on the international tourist traffic .
We were there for a midday 1 hour fishing appointment and were greeted by the friendly staff . There were 2 families , with a total of 8 people in the group including 4 small children . The staff were very good with the kids , teaching them to cast and how to stay safe .
The lures used had barbless hooks so the fish would not be injured if caught and released .
We started in the general Pool and within 5 minutes I landed a 80cm monster ! Staff helped me land it and then the rest of them caught some smaller specimens . If the kids are not having any luck , they move you to the production pools where the kids are practically guaranteed to get something !
Everyone including my wife who has never fished before had a good time ! If you want to entertain the kids with fishing , this is the best option ! I remember paying loads more for a fishing charter , and even then we caught nothing spectacular and the kids enjoyed this much more !

Booked a 1 hour fishing session at Hook a Barra with some family members, they gave us a run down on their farming activities and some pointers to get us started, the fish habitat was well presented with natural features and overhanging banks that held a lot of the fish it definitely wasn’t guaranteed that you would catch a fish so the techniques the crew showed us were the key to success.
I had plenty of hook ups but couldn’t get a fish on the bank, I was so keen to get a Barra that I booked another session for the following morning this time I converted the hook ups to catches, 4 amazing Barra on the bank in an hour the best a 90cm fish I will remember for a long time. Great people great fun and the ethos of this place is awesome Australian produced sustainable fish.

Wowzer! 4 fish in an hour in the big pond. Good work!
Its amazing what a little RnD can do for your fishing success.
We recommend coming so see us to improve your chances for Barra out on the open water. Our fish respond exactly the same as they would in the rivers.

Attended Hook A Barra, hoping to catch a Barramundi with the understanding that it isn't always going to happen. The day was overcast and a bit cold with recent rain, so the odds were against us.
We were given a rod and lure and told to spread out around the pond and begin fishing. My group decided, with a few other people, to go to the far side of the pond so it wasn't too crowded.
It quickly became obvious that, due to the conditions, the fish weren't interested in the lures and no fish were going to be caught on lures that day. The staff started to use a pellet bait set up and were successful in helping people on the other side of the lake in catching fish.
Great we thought, they will come over to us and help, except that never happened. In fact the whole time we spent fishing, not 1 of the 3 staff on duty approached anyone on the other side of the pond to provide any type of assistance or to check if we were having any problems.
So at the end of the session about 2/3 of the group had caught a fish with the assistance of staff, and the other 3rd were totally ignored. Happy to take our money though.
Poor customer service and I would not recommend.

We had a great time at Hook-a-Barra today. Our young kids loved it - the guides were all super friendly and helpful, taking the time to teach them how to cast and reel in the fish. Both our kids caught three fish right away in the practice pond, and then the guide hooked a big one in the trophy pond and let our little guy reel it in. He was thrilled!

We had visited here before and thought it was bit expensive but this time we thought we would give it a try and we were very happy that we did. We booked in ahead for one hours fishing this morning for my husband. He wanted to catch and purchase a fish so he was led to the appropriate pond and caught one in about 4 seconds, it was a good size at 3.7kgs. After that he went to the hook and release pond but didn't have any luck there. He had a good time, one hour was enough and when he was finished we paid for our catch and we also bought a Barramundi Dip to take home. I must mention also that all the staff were very friendly and helpful, all up it was a nice experience.

Have just had an amazing morning with Leigh
at Hook a Barra doing the total Barra experience. The package included the guided Farm Tour, Leigh was a wealth of knowledge and I got to see the Barra harvest, followed by an entertaining hour battling witts with Barramundi up to a metre long.
The farm tour also included a tasting plate of different ways to enjoy eating Barramundi, in all it was worth every cent of the admission and I will be comming back with my friends in the near future.
Many thanks Leigh.

Absolute awesome experience! The crew were fantastic, explaining how the farm worked and what we needed/could do. We caught our smallish barra in one of the smaller ponds so we could say we caught one, but then the crew worked hard to help, explain and try to catch the big barra in the show pond. We tried out the kitchen for some fresh barra burgers and barramundi spring rolls, then BAM! my young lad was on the line for a fish almost as big as him!! He was stoked! Absolute ripper morning/lunch. Suggest you try for the 1030 session with lunch afterwards. Absolute ripper day! Thanks so much.

From the start we arrived a little early (before they open) and having seen us one of the operators Simon I think his name was allowed us in early and gave us a tour, went through explaining how everything was done in a very professional manner. He was great with the kids and wife. Soon enough he had our gear out and ready to go, he set us up gave us some tips and helped my 5 year old son lots by casting out for him for some time which was great ss it allowed me some fishing time also rather than just helping my son non stop. We managed to catch 3 Barramundi two of which my son pulled in and the whole time our guide was there readyand waiting, we could not have asked for anything more, its a great place with friendly people and I'd dare say your almost guaranteed to catch some. The only thing that let the place down was a lack of shade , other than that I could not fault it and would happily go again.
