About
Spend time in a lavvu (traditional Sámi dwelling) and talk with reindeer herders—not possible for most visitors to Northern Norway—on this overnight tour from Tromso. Travel to the island of Kvaloya, where your reindeer-herder Sámi guide takes you sledding with their animals and into their lavvu to enjoy a home-cooked meal and conversation before spending the night. It's also the ideal location for spotting the northern lights.

Amazing Experience
Feb. 2020
We had an amazing evening!
Reindeer sled riding, overnight in a Sami tent, traditional Sami dinner and the Sami guide who spoke on their culture and ways of life (she is a reindeer herder!), and we saw the northern lights!
This was a cool experience, but I am not sure I'd sleep over again. At age 60 sleeping in Lavvu on reindeer skin and stocking a fire oven once an hr was a stretch. That being said, I am very glad I did it.
However you can come out and do everything else and then return back to town rather than stay in the tent.

Sleeping in Lavu is great, deer sledding is not that cool
Feb. 2020
Staying in the Lavu is a great experience. Cozy and warm. The dinner was not that tasty. We had only the vegetarian one so can't tell about the other one. Sled riding with the rain deer was not that exciting. I guess they just don't like humans so they didn't seem to like pulling sleds. Feeding them felt nice, thou.

Dear 83cezard, Thank you foryour balanced and honest feedback. We really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience with us. We are happy to hear that you enjoyed your visit and had an overall positive experience. Unlike huskies, reindeers only run when they are distressed (or cold). Reindeer sledding is therefore a slow activity. Best, Bernhard

Highlight of my trip
Feb. 2020
I stayed in February 2020. Had a great time, spent an hour with the reindeers sledding and feeding them. This was follows by a meal and a talk about the Sami culture. The best bit was staying overnight in the tent. Really cosy as there was a wood burner. Didnt see the Northern Lights but enjoyed getting up every couple of hours and checking, great breakfast in the morning also. Stunning scenery around. Cant recommend enough

A worthwhile experience
Feb. 2020
Very nice trip starting from Tromso. We had bad weather but in spite of that we truly enjoyed the area, the hospitality of the local Sami group and the overnight in the tent. Very good explanation in the evening about the Sami culture and history. And we had some Northern lights too !

The reindeer feeding and sledding were so much fun! Afterwards, we had reindeer stew for dinner while learning about the Sami culture and their music! A Memorable Night.
Dec. 2019
Upon arriving at the site, we suited up in an arctic jumpsuit and boots, which kept us amply warm. We were then herded to feed the reindeer and then to ride the reindeer-pulled sled.

Feeding the reindeer was interesting; I wished there was more time with the reindeers.

The sled ride by itself is not spectacular, but the night sky was amazing. The sky was dark but bejeweled by dazzling stars, and countless shooting stars grazed the midnight blue sky.

A traditional Sami meal was served after our reindeer encounter. The reindeer stew was delicious; I had second helping. Dinner was followed by a talk on the history and culture of the Sami and a few ethnic songs. Breakfast was served the following morning promptly.

There was no activity after dinner. We were directed to our lodging for the night. Don't expect a traditional-looking lavvu like the pictures. The tent was quite warm and cozy when we entered. Hot water, tea, coffee, and water and a tin of cookies were provided in the tent. It was a cold night, -5.5C. Sleeping bag and warm blankets on reindeer hide helped with keeping us warm. Amazingly, the wood-burning stove did a splendid job of keeping the tent warm. The caveat, you need to feed the furnace at regular intervals; otherwise, the nipping cold creeps in, and you will be rudely awakened by the frigid temperatures. Shoving another firewood into the stove heats the lavvu in no time.

Several outhouses are close by if you need to answer the call of nature.

The staff was accommodating and enlightened us about the Sami people and their culture.

Recommend this trip for anyone interested in outdoor camping in frigid weather, a chance to see the aurora borealis, and the Sami culture. You can bring your luggage, and they can store it for you. Bring some hand warmers and a headlamp; these will come in handy.

Unforgettable Night
Dec. 2019 • Couples
My girlfriend and I went on this trip and it was absolutely amazing. The hosts were truly passionate about what they are doing as well as being passionate about the Sámi people. The hosts were incredibly nice and accommodating. This trip truly exceeded our expectations. The hosts also responded to emails very quickly and were accommodating for my girlfriends vegetarian diet.
If you are worried about being cold in the lavvu, don't be. The fireplace does an incredible job making it very warm and cozy. Everything was perfect and it was truly an unforgettable experience. We highly recommend this trip.

Feeding Reindeer Under the Northern Lights!
Nov. 2019
If you are looking only for a good night's sleep, book a hotel. If you want an experience of a lifetime, spend the night in a lavu tent next to the reindeer and under the Northern Lights! The lavu tent is a warm and inviting space and so long as you feed the fireplace throughout the night, it will keep you warm. The combined experience of arriving under the Northern Lights, meeting the reindeer, going for a reindeer sled ride, feeding the reindeer herd, enjoying a meal of reindeer stew and delicious bread and the company of your Sami hosts will likely stay with you forever. In the morning, with a bit of daylight, it was nice to meet the reindeer again and get additional pictures.
