We met outside Radisson Blu hotel at 9.45, were checked on a list and put on a bus which took about 25 minutes to take us to the reindeer place where we were welcomed by the Sami people. A young lady called Elizabeth really stands out as she’s passionate about her culture and genuinely wanted to share it with us, including getting us all to join in with a yoik, one of their traditional songs.

We were in the sled group first which is at walking pace for 20 minutes or so, a blanket is offered for warmth. The route takes you around a big loop of the field alongside the water, daylight was only just arriving and it was all stunningly beautiful.

Next was feeding the reindeer. They’d obviously already had some while we were sledding so not ravenous but happy to eat more. The Sami man explained how the females know when they’ve had enough but the males will just eat and eat! They are smaller animals than we’d expected and clearly very tame and used to humans turning up every day with food! Very gentle and rather cute too. We were free to wander around the very large area with our bucket of food and it was a strange sort of peace, surreal.

Afterwards into the large tent-like structure where many benches with reindeer skins over are available to sit around a roaring log firepit with kettles boiling and the pot of stew keeping ward. We somehow managed to miss out on the hot chocolate, maybe in the wrong tent, not sure but no big deal, the stew was delicious with very tender meat. All too soon it was time to board the bus back to the hotel. I could’ve listened to Elizabeth for hours. She is one who speaks clearly but is also able to project her voice so even my hard of hearing other half was able to hear her clearly.

A thoroughly good trip out, many thanks to the Sami people, long may your culture survive and further develop.

Incredible experience would highly recommend!

My partner and I booked this experience last minute due to issues with another tour, so we were unsure of what to expect and we were so glad we did.
The staff; Luna, Anne-Marie and Matilda were all fantastic so welcoming and made us feel at home amongst the reindeer.
We were provided with an incredible Reindeer stew (definitely try this!) and Luna shared plenty of stories and facts about the native Sami culture.
The reindeer experience was phenomenal, you get to roam around and feed any of the 50-100 reindeer for about an hour and a half before jumping on a leisurely sled ride around the area.
This was one of the best things we did in Norway (and Tromso) and we couldn’t be happier with how it was conducted from start to finish!

Absolutely wonderful experience! The staff (Jenny in particular) were so friendly and welcoming, everything was well-planned and efficient, and the experience was absolutely magical. While there were quite a few people on the tour (around 120, I think), it didn’t feel crowded at all! In fact, while feeding the reindeer, the area is so big and there are enough reindeer that you almost feel like you’re by yourself! The views around the Sámi camp are breathtaking as well! I recommend doing the short sleigh ride to get the experience, but 15 minutes was long enough! The reindeer stew is phenomenal and there is hot chocolate, tea, and cookies available throughout the day as well. You have unlimited feed to feed the reindeer so you will have plenty of time with them, but if you get cold, you can go into one of the laavus to warm up! The Sámi culture part of the tour was so informative and interesting. The speaker was funny, engaging, and delivered the information in a fun and interactive way! I learned a ton about the Sámi people and have a totally new understanding and appreciation for the culture! Whether you are traveling as a family, couple, or solo, if you are visiting Tromsø, don’t miss out on this experience!

We are extremely happy that you enjoyed every single part of the tour. Also, we are very grateful for your words about our staff, we have forwarded your message to Jenni. This must be one of the very popular day tours that tourist liked to join. 2 big buses full of tourist are going to feed the reindeer at the same time, what a chaos. If fun to feed the reindeer, take the sledge ride and listen to the Sami story.
Perhaps the organiser can improve this tour by providing more details while we are inside the bus on the way to the farm. Many tour guides looks new to the job and all arrangement went loose without proper guidance while in the farm with reindeer.

We went to Tromsø to celebrate my husband's 40th birthday. I booked this tour for us (2 adults and our 4 year old) this was one of the best tours we have been on ever! We loved our sledding trip and feeding the reindeer. The culture part was exceptional. I only had wished we could have had the culture part first so we could have more time to ask questions. We had to go straight back to the bus after the culture part. The Sami woman who spoke during our culture session was so passionate and amazing. It brought tears to my eyes and I only wish I could have expressed our gratitude to her for sharing with us. Our four year old loved every minute of it! She was learning about the Sami culture in nursery school and all the Sami were so kind to take pictures with her so that we could bring them back to her friends and teachers at nursery. I cannot recommend this tour more!

We had a great time feeding the reindeer and learning about the Sami Culture! The camp is very spacious with lots of reindeer to feed. They also gave us crampons as it was quite icy so we could walk around easily. Enjoy your time with the reindeer, there is plenty of time to feed them and walk around while waiting for everybody to enjoy their sled ride so no need to rush or worry you'll miss something - they'll come find you! The sledding was quite relaxing, and I was nervous about the reindeer stew but it was very good. Our favorite part was learning about the Sami culture. Really recommend this experience and learn about the Sami people during your time in Norway.

I booked this trip last minute and I was so glad I did. The reindeer camp and the Sami people were wonderful. Their stories and songs were charming, the reindeer stew was good and feeding the hungry reindeer was exciting. I took the short sleigh ride which was more than enough. Be sure to dress warm and do not miss this excursion.

Thank you for your review and for visiting us. We are happy that you have had a fascinating experience at our camp! Special thank you for your mention about our meals. No worries about being cold - we offer blankets and warm jackets for everyone. In case you get super cold, you can stay in lavvu and warm up by the fire, while enjoying some cookies and hot beverages. Hope to see you again!

I didn’t expect it to be so beautiful! It really made my day!
When we got to the reindeers’ farm, two beautiful Sami ladies dressed in their traditional clothes warmly welcomed us. We got invited into a Sami tent to warm up by the fire. Both ladies sang to us unique Sami songs. We were served hot drinks, traditional food and we enjoyed a long sleighing trip. We fed the reindeers which was-for me-the best part. It was one of the most beautiful days in my life! I just wanted to go every day :)

Most underwhelming part of my Tromsø trip. I am unsure how it has such a good review on trip advisor, makes me wonder if I can trust it anymore.

Did not feel authentic at all, it felt like a tourist trap, pack people in to make profit, was not personal and members of staff were not friendly. Not worth the time or the money. Spend your money elsewhere.

The meal was like a school dinner. The smoked salmon roll tasted like it was frozen, plus it could have been suitable for vegetarians since there was hardly any salmon. There was no dressing or seasoning on the salad. The bidos was okay but it was just a stew. The cake was dry, and not worth the calories.

Feeding the reindeer was probably best part of it, however I could probably do something similar at a local farm for free.

The sledding was far from thrilling. It was pathetic. I could walk faster since we were being led by a gentleman walking the reindeer. I would expect that it could be suitable for small children, but even a child would probably get bored.

There was one sami guide, who was 23 years old. The talk was short and there was no time for questions. It would have been nice if this was at the beginning and there was actually a chance to ask questions and maybe meet more of the family.. Why is he on his own?

Overall, the set up was too touristy and did not feel authentic. Apart from the sami guy and one lady on the coach, the members of staff were cold and it felt like they did not want to be there.

The coach was packed with guests and for the amount of money spent, I feel like the trip could have been a lot better. I feel ripped off.

Go out for a nice meal instead!

Sorry to hear that you feel this was not a good experience. As you mentioned we mostly get 5 star reviews so most of the time we do get it right but in your case it appears we did not manage to meet your expectations. I will try to respond to your main points of complaint. The reindeers go as fast or as slow as they feel. We do of course always have a guide with the sleigh ride and this is for your safety. The food we serve is traditional sami stew called bidus. This is served at all Sami weddings and celebrations. We cook it over the open fire so the smoky flavours combine with the reindeer meat and vegetables. This is the Sami national dish and it is important that we share this with you. The sami culture normally lasts around 45 minutes but if you felt this was too short then we take this comment on board but we also have to find the balance between the reindeer feeding, sled ride activity and the culture. Depending of the day or evening you visit the number of sami reinder herders varies. I hope you understand that not all the sami reindeer herders can be there every day and evening. We do take your points very seriously and we will continue to do all we can to make sure all guests have a 5 star experience. We would also like to offer you a full refund. We don't ever want anyone to feel like they have been ripped off. Our intention is that guests leave with a memorable experience and a better understanding of sami culture. Please send me an email at info@tromsoarcticreindeer.com and we will give you a full refund.

We came from Ireland and did this tour outsise of Tromsø. Wonderful combination of education and fun with Sami representatives. Feeding the reindeer was very fun, and the talk/meal/songs were genuine and honest. Came in knowing nothing about Sami culture but came out with an interest in learning more! Great experience overall.
