- 1‘The temple of art’ is the expression that describes the Art History Museum in Vienna the best. Even its architecture designed in the best traditions of historicism combines the details of temples from the three key Western cultures. This is the place where you will find all gods and heroes of the West European art Olympus, such as Arcimboldo, Brueghel, Velasquez, Holbein, Dürer, Giorgione, Cranach, Raphael, Rembrandt, Rubens, Titian (listed in alphabetical order). As any Western museum proclaiming itself universal, Kunsthistorisches Museum also features collections of Egyptian, Greek, and Roman art, as well as a numismatic cabinet. Moreover, a quarter of the exhibition space of the museum is occupied by the Cabinets of curiosities, a mixed exposition of indoor sculpture, church plate, decorative elements, and scientific instruments; all in all, everything considered unique and of special value. The museum’s curators have drawn up an informative list for visitors; including 700 masterpieces for local art lovers, 100 for recurring visitors, and 35 “must-see” pieces for newbies. With this art tour we follow the curators’ short list and take a very close look at globally celebrated masterpieces, from varying perspectives to understand what makes each art piece so very special.
About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Cruiser175341412630 contributionsA tour that exceeded my expectations many, many timesI came to the Leopold Museum with a very basic knowledge of Austrian art, I knew about Gustav Klimt of course, but not much more. In just two hours I not only learnt a few names or had a number of paintings explained to me, but thanks to my brilliant guide Julia I now have a very vivid picture of what was going on in art in Vienna. Julia really has a talent for making you see complexity without overloading you with any kind of technicalities. Highly recommended.Written 1 January 2025
- Javajanet0 contributionsWonderful tour and great guideJulia is knowledgeable and a wonderful guide through the Kunsthistorisches Museum. I learned so much from her and had a terrific time doing it. She had been my guide on my tour of the Leopold. I was delighted when she turned up for this tour so that we would continue our discussion of art together.Written 17 December 2024
- GoPlaces097248575430 contributionsTop-notch guideEverything Julia said made sense and was not the usual talk about art styles. She made this tour not what I expected it to be from the description, it was a lot more interesting. I highly recommend this tour!Written 14 November 2024
- SusanF27800 contributionsFabulous Art Tour Guide in ViennaMy husband and I arranged for two private art tours with Julia: the “Vermeer, Bruegel, Titian” tour in the Kunsthistorisches Museum and the “Big Tour of Gustav Klimt’s” art in three separate museums. We wholeheartedly recommend Julia. She is one of our favorite tour guides ever. To begin with, Julia’s knowledge of art and art history is encyclopedic. She doesn’t just explain the key elements of a painting; rather, she describes how the artist was influenced by older artists as well as current peers and how these influences manifest in a given painting. She also pointed out hidden elements and not-so-obvious themes in the paintings (and in the museums that contain the art works) that really enhanced our appreciation and understanding. In fact, Julia made me so excited about art that I’m actively thinking about enrolling in an art history class. If you treat yourself to an art tour with Julia, you will not be disappointed.Written 11 November 2024
- laureln3860 contributionsWe Loved This Tour!My husband and I learned so much about art, it’s history, what is art, why are some pieces of art valuable as well as many technical aspects about paintings in this short tour! I will visit art museums now with a completely different perspective. It broadened my understanding and appreciation of art!Written 29 September 2024
- Navigate560440189040 contributionsHighest quality tourThe Leopold Museum has such a great collection, but we would never have understood or even been able to see it without Julia's excellent guidance. This tour was so much more than just information about artists and paintings. It was the most emotional, intelligent and witty encounter with art we have ever had.Written 1 June 2024
- LynnF2180 contributionsA fabulous private tour with a great guideOur guide, Julia gave a wonderful tour which included not just Klimt but a great deal more art history. We learned how to discern specific parts of a painting for example. The Klimt paintings were exquisite and Julia’s knowledge added so much to our enjoyment and appreciation. A private tour is a great way to get the most out of the experience. Thank you again Julia!Written 28 May 2024

Our three-hour tour of the Vienna Art Museum was so amazing that we wanted to hear more - so we booked a second tour with her two days later. Julia provides such rich insights into not just the specific artworks but their context within the broader culture and history, drawing on resources from The Economist to Mark Twain to the museum’s own research. We eagerly soaked it all in. We’ve can’t praise Julia enough and highly recommend her tours!

Dear Kris, I'm so happy to get your review. Six hours in one museum is a challenge :) So I am grateful to get this confirmation that all my stories and sources are to your liking. I thank you for this great opportunity to share my insights. And allow me to wish you more discoveries that confirm or disprove Tiziano's motto "Natura potentior ars".

During our weekend stay in Vienna, my husband and I went on this tour through the Art History Museum, and it was an absolute pleasure. Julia, our tour guide, was so knowledgeable and passionate about the arts and particularly about the masterpieces she showcased to us. Through the art pieces she provided us with fascinating insights into the history of our culture as well as with eye-opening background stories about each of the works and the masters that made them. We had no idea that art viewing in a museum could be so engaging, until we visited this amazing museum with Julia.

When booking private art historian tours, we have always received engaging and knowledgeable guides. However, our experience with Julia at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna was broader, deeper, and more immersive than any other tour. There was so much more than just the background information on a selection of masterpieces and the fascinating stories about the artists. It is an experience that changes the way you think about art. Try it. It's absolutely worth it.

Julia was fantastic! She is very passionate about art and the museum and was able to explain what makes the artwork we were viewing so exceptional. Her depth of knowledge was amazing and she was able to communicate the ideas in a way I could understand and appreciate. I’ve been on many private museum tours all over Europe and this was the best I’ve experienced. Passionate, articulate and engaging….Julia was the best!

This made our city break memorable. Julia not only talked about the paintings (6) and the artists but also gave some very interesting insights into the science and psychology of art. I found it inspirational, the time flew by (3hrs)
I would do this tour again and certainly book her for the other museums

For our first visit to such a fabulous museum like the Vienna Museum of Art History, we wanted an art professional who can introduce us to the important masterpieces. We booked a tour with Julia, and though it was not quite what we were expecting it was our best time in a museum ever!
The tour keeps the promise given in its title – it is a tour of must-see pieces of art and we did see such impressive works as of Breugel or Titian (sadly no genuine Raphael at the moment). Extraordinary and unusual was the way we talked about these genius works. Yes, we did learn a lot about artists and their works, but we also were challenged to give answers to questions, which at first sounded odd, but finally, it was a way to get a much deeper understanding of the ideas and purposes of the artists. And it certainly kept our spirits high for more than three hours, which is quite something in itself. Adding the emotional engagement of our guide and hilarious stories about art, forgery and crime, made our tour an excellent experience.
