I would not normally book a tour but was the only way I could fit in a visit to Salzburg whilst in Austria on this trip. Extremely comfortable van and excellent commentary by Ton. The visit to the lakes and St Gilgen on the way was a highlight. Had a lovely guide named Maria for our walk around Salzburg which was very informative. Maybe the walking tour could have been a bit shorter. Plenty of time to fit in lunch afterwards and quiet relaxing drive back watched The Sound of Music on iPads. Recommended.

I chanced upon the trip though a travel review article on-line and made the reservation. There were 3 couples and the van was perfect for our group size. Ben the driver was himself a good guide from Vienna through the drive and along Attersee, Mondsee, St Gilgen until we reached Salzburg where David the guide took over. He was knowledgeable of the area and made the tour very interesting with his insight of the place. We have a better appreciation not only of the obvious beauty of the place and its fantastic history, art and culture - but also its reference point in the context of WW2 - which was sobering and yet, also critical to the understanding of the place and its people. The latter aspect of the education I very much appreciated. We travel to learn and to understand others - but the irony is we come to understand ourselves more intimately as well. Salzburg beyond the obvious and pedestrian. This is what the tour gave me. And yet - everything was pretty as a picture. But it takes unique guide to show you the dark behind the pretty sights that one sees. The dark is important to remember and derive constant lessons in life

Hi Claire, thank you for your comprehensive review of our Salzburg & Lake Region Small-Group Tour from Vienna. This is why we choose to keep the group size limited to eight people – because it gives us the flexibility to offer an individual experience and cater to the different interests of our guests. We can provide more in-depth historical information to those who are curious or keep it light for those who just want to enjoy a fun day. Marlies & the Vienna à la carte Team

Wonderful tour! We only had 4 people all together so it felt like a private tour. Our driver/guide was great! The ride to Salzburg is 3 hours (quite long), you depart early (7:30 am) when most coffee shops in Vienna are still closed. He stopped by at this great restaurant were we had great breakfast and coffee. Great opportunity to see small villages and towns of Austria, wchich are quite amazing. The tour of Salzburg was very good as well, very informative. Afterwards we had plenty of free time to walk around. Overall, great experience

Hello O6936OKmarinal! Thank you for taking the time to write this very nice review of our small-group tour to Salzburg! We are glad to hear that it felt like a private tour to you. That's the idea behind the small groups - even when the tour is full with 8 people you have all the advantages of a private tour but for much less money :) Hopefully we'll see you back in Vienna one day! The mesmerizing scenery of the Austrian Lake District and the harmonious blend of natural and cultural beauty of Salzburg makes is definitely worth the 2-3hr drive from Vienna.

Although slightly more time at each stop would be an icing on the cake, overall the day trip is well organised by Vienna à la carte. We had a great day out with our driver and guide Markus.

I would highly recommend this day trip especially if you are spending your weekend in Vienna where most shops are closed on Sunday.

My friends and I wanted to explore Salzburg after spending several days in Vienna, and we were so happy with this coach trip! We were able to make several stops for meals, breaks, and photo ops, and the guide gave us lots of information about the area. Once in Salzburg, a walking tour guide gave us more info while making recommendations about what we might want to come back and do during our free time. I will absolutely look into other trips by this company when I'm back in the area!

If you don't want the hassle of figuring out how to take a day trip from Vienna to Salzburg on your own, or if you know how to do it but just don't feel up to taking the train, then book a trip with Vienna ala Carte. This is the way to go!

I booked a small group tour from Vienna to Salzburg. The Mercedes mini-van holds 8 people maximum, so a "full tour" is still a very small group. The meeting point in the morning is a very obvious landmark in Vienna (Tourist Information Center, across from the Albertina museum). The mini-van is equipped with powerful air conditioning and free wi-fi. In addition, each seat back has its own iPad, which is pre-loaded with a documentary on a concentration camp, a movie (of course, The Sound of Music!), and free Spotify if you just want to relax and listen to music the whole way. Each seat also has very nice Bose noise-cancelling headphones. I wasn't expecting these fantastic amenities!

The drive from Vienna to Salzburg includes a coffee/snack/restroom stop at a nice cafe off the highway, and a bit later, a picturesque stop at beautiful Lake Atter.

Once we arrived in Salzburg, our driver, Ton, handed us over to another guide (ours was Naomi) who conducted the city walking tour. The walking tour is about 1.5 hours, and Naomi showed us the main parts of Salzburg as well as the relevant Sound of Music sites. Be aware that this walking tour is not exclusively Sound of Music sites - it is a general tour that combines the main sites of Salzburg with a few movie sites. After the guided walking tour, we were given 2 hours to wander on our own. I thought this was plenty of extra time to have lunch and explore on my own. (Each guest is given a map of the city before the guided walking tour.) Ton gave very specific and clear instructions on where to meet the mini-van at the end of the day. You can't miss it - it's where all the other tour buses/coaches/vans are parked for city tours.

Ton was a very nice man, who was quite flexible and accommodating. On the way back to Vienna, he made a quick, unscheduled stop for a guest who needed another restroom break. This was much appreciated.

I was very happy with my experience, as it was smooth, easy, and completely took the guesswork out of how I was going to get from Vienna to Salzburg that day. I highly recommend this company!

Dear Phenobarbara, what fantastic feedback - thank you! It's great to hear you pointing out everything we do to give our guests the best experience possible, like keeping the groups small, providing entertainment options on board and a guided tour in Salzburg that has a little bit for everyone! Flexible, accommodating, smooth and easy is exactly what we are aiming for :) We hope to have you on one of our tours some time in the future! Marlies & the Vienna à la carte team

It takes a about 3 hours each way to get to Salzburg from Vienna. The trip there you will make a couple of stops in the lake region to see some amazing views. You get about 2 hours or so on your own in Salzburg after the tour which is led by a local guide not the driver. It was pretty cold the day we were there but still enjoyed the visit.

Dear 422jh, thank you for sharing your experience with fellow travellers! It can indeed get quite cold in winter around here, but the views of the snow-capped mountains and wintery landscapes usually make up for it :) We hope to see you back in Vienna soon! Marlies & the Vienna à la carte team

I would like to thank the tour operator for the fantastic service provided. Our tour guide and driver - Fleming was a complete gentleman. He tried his best to accommodate all requests from the guests and provided detailed information of not only the places but their connection with bigger historical events. So people who didn't have a good idea about the historical events never felt left out. And it made for a great drive while we admired the lovely countryside.

The group included only 8 people and we were comfortably seated in the premium AC van. Every seat had iPads for entertainment and wifi was enabled inside the van. There should be more charging ports for the phones I felt considering it's a full day trip.

We stopped at an upmarket breakfast buffet place. The layout was a bit confusing to figure out at first and crowded. The stop was supposed to be for 20 mins but we got delayed and ended up leaving after 40 mins. There were some passengers who grumbled about the 40 min breakfast stop but since I couldn't get anything to eat before the early morning departure, really appreciated that Fleming accommodated it.

The drive was great. I chose this trip out of all the available options because of the lake region tour. I wish we had more time there. I would have loved to take a tour specifically for lake region but there was no such option available. May be some time from Salzburg tour can be curtailed so passengers can enjoy the lake region more.

In Salzburg, our guide Naomi kept the tour upbeat with her witty and lively commentary. I think there should be a lunch break before the walking tour since doing it on an empty stomach around lunchtime dampens the enthusiasm a bit.

We got some free time after the tour for sightseeing and lunch. We left Salzburg as scheduled and on the way back, while everyone was discussing sound of music locations, the tour guide put the movie on the screen which made the drive back to Vienna quite enjoyable and was a fun way to conclude the trip.

So, even though this trip was a bit more expensive than others, I would highly recommend it.

First of all as you sent me an email to review tha tour with photo taken by our tour guide it is not our group or tour guide
This tour was very weak especially for the price of more than $225 pp
Can't recommend. Our guide
Julio was very nice but not really personable and somewhat difficult to understand
He tried to give a lot of information but ultimately
I wished he did not talk constantly.
Too much time spent in slake district- OK to get out at at Lake Attersee and take pics, then
A quick stop in St Gilgen would have been fine
So touristy
Saltzburg not too interesting to make it worthwhile to spend 5 hours+ driving there and back
Do not recommend

Dear travelrodent, thank you for taking the time to write a review on TripAdvisor. We are sorry that you were sent the wrong group photo at first. We found out about 10 minutes after sending you the photo and immediately rectified the mistake. You are saying that your guide gave too much information and was not personable (you are also saying that he is a very nice person). While each of our guides and drivers have their own individual style, they always try to adapt to the needs of each guest and to present their knowledge in a captivating and fun way. Julio has only received excellent customer feedback so far but obviously he was not the perfect fit for you that day. We apologise for that because we want each of our guests to have the best experience possible. It is quite rare that guests say that they would have liked to spend LESS time in the Lake Region, particularly in St. Gilgen. More often we hear that guests would have preferred to spend more time in the Lake Region (AND in Salzburg). The itinerary has been designed and fine-tuned based on customer feedback. We try to maximise our guests' precious time and to find the perfect balance between all the beautiful sights on the tour. Based on the overwhelmingly positive feedback of our guests we are doing this quite successfully. We are sorry that you did not find the tour worthwhile. The higher price point of our tour compared to other options is explained by the small group size of our tour. We strictly limit this tour to 8 people, ensuring a semi-private atmosphere and making the experience much more flexible, relaxed and enjoyable compared to coach tours with groups of 50 or more. This advantage naturally comes at a price. Thank you again for leaving your review. Your feedback is very important to us. Best regards! Ulrich & the Vienna à la carte team

I don't normally do trips like this - I am usually a "figure out the train and do it myself" type of traveler, but with limited time in Vienna and wanting to see the lake district, I decided to splurge for the luxury and i'm so glad I did. Our guide Julio was a great host - the ride was very comfortable and informative, with great stops around the lake and a perfect mini-stop in St. Gilgen. Our guide Gabby in Salzburg was also wonderful - you could tell that she really wanted us to experience her home city, with lots of facts and tips for things to do with our time. I do wish we had a little more time on our own before heading back, but it was a really lovely and memorable time - definitely worth it!
