Disappointing Tour, Not Worth the Cost
Sep. 2021
My husband and I took the Katla Volcano Ice Cave Tour from Vik and we were very disappointed with the experience. It wasn't informative and was a poorly-run tour, overall, and most definitely not worth the cost.

The tour started with a "Super Jeep" ride, which is really a van on huge wheels into which they shoved 14 of us during the pandemic. Most wore masks but some did not, and no one was told to wear them. The van was uncomfortable with so many people and I ended up with bruises from being squashed in the last row with 3 other people. The van was so loud that we couldn't hear any of the audio from our guide, so we, unfortunately, didn't get to learn anything on our tour. This continued on the hike itself since we were the last to get out of the last row of the van and ended up towards the back of the hiking line with one other couple behind us.

We travel pretty regularly and take tours often but this is the first tour we've ever taken in which nothing was explained to us about the plan for the tour itself. We didn't know how long we'd be hiking, if/when we could stop for photos, or what the plan was for the cave ahead of time. We felt the hike itself was pretty rushed and no time was really left to take in the view and take any pictures. The cave was much smaller than expected (which was fine, it's nature and we don't expect it to accommodate us) but I'm not really sure why we were sent into a tiny cave with two other people instead of just letting each pair go in on their own since we only had a minute or two in there, max. The cave looks much larger in the photos - be aware, it's only a small few feet of ice cave that fits no more than 2-3 people at a time.

The time at the top was somewhat wasted. Someone who was ahead of us in line started using his drone and we didn't because we didn't think there would be time (and our guide had explained nothing to the group). There would have been plenty of time because our guide actually spent about 10+ minutes giving directions to a couple on our tour while we all waited around and tried to stay out of the way of the next group that had arrived with their guide and started to go into the cave. We were literally standing around in the same spot waiting for our guide.

For the amount we paid ($155 USD per person), it was a real disappointment. We learned absolutely nothing because we couldn't hear our guide and he spent more time giving directions to a couple than addressing the rest of the group.

We informed Arctic Adventures who apologized, thanked us for the feedback, and blamed South Coast Adventure, who apparently ran the tour. They didn't offer any partial refund for the bad experience.

Definitely not recommended.

Dear HeardItBothWays, Thank you for reaching out to us in regards to your experience with us. We welcome all feedback as it helps us improve our overall operations. The safety and overall enjoyment of our customers are factors that we value greatly. We are sad to hear your experience did not match your expectations, however, it does match the online description. Allow us to point out that the duration of the tour is up to 3 hours is including the shuttle. Therefore, even being run on a relatively small group basis it is not really possible to spend more than a few minutes inside the cave. In addition to that, this is a very popular public site that many agencies take their groups to, which gives each agency a very limited time that can be spent there. Also, all pictures on the website are up to date. If you could take a closer look you'll see that the cave is smaller than a few years ago. It is part of the natural process, as caves change due to weather conditions. Photos in the tour gallery reflect the present situation: https://adventures.is/iceland/day-tours/ice-caves/katla-ice-cave-tour-under-the-volcano/ We are also sorry to hear you did not get to take drone pictures. It is recommended to discuss things as the duration for free exploration and taking photos with the guide at the beginning of the tour. As our team has already mentioned, this tour is operated by our partners South Coast Adventures. We assure you that all of your remarks have been passed to them in order to avid similar experiences in the future. Once again, we are sorry to hear that you did not find the experience enjoyable. We hope you had a great time in Iceland despite this

Disappointed
O RR all this was a fun day but it is not what they advertise. The pictures make it look like you are walking into a large ice cave that goes for a long way. They have you wear helmets etc to further make you think you are entering a cave. In reality it is what looks like a man made ice. Ave that goes back perhaps 20 feet. Disappointing to the 6 in my party. The guide was great and informative snd he saved the trip by making it fun but for $155 each it was not what they make it appear to be.

Dear 784edw, Thank you for your review. We are happy to know you had a fun day. The pictures on the website are always updated so you could have a clear imagine of how the ice caves and etc would look like. The helmets are always mandatory on the glacier and of course entering an ice cave. You should always read the tour description and get the idea of how the tour is going to be so later on we could avoid these misunderstandings. Once again thank you for your review. We hope to see you soon again in Iceland. Greetings from Iceland.

Blatant Mis-Marketing
Sep. 2021
Our guide, Stefan, was a wonderful man. He's the reason why this tour gets a 2-star review from me, instead of a 1-star review. Here's the problem with this tour:

On the tour's description on their website, the "highlights" specifically call out a "glacier hike on the Myrdalsjokull glacier," and the photo gallery specifically shows participants hiking out on the glacier, as well as touring through a cave that is large enough for several people to walk through. What the description fails to mention is that due to the glacier's constantly changing nature, the caves they use from one month to the next might not be the same, and your experience may be quite different from what is shown in the pictures on their website.

For the cave that was being used last week, there was no walking on the glacier. Instead, when our "superjeep" arrived at the tour location, we simply hopped out of the car and walked up to the edge of the glacier where the "cave" was (it was just a walk on sand). As for the "Cave" itself, it was quite a bit different from what is pictured in the tour gallery on their website: rather than a large cave to walk through, the "cave" was really just a hole in the wall that was only large enough for two people to stand in at a time.

So, in effect, the $300 tour (for two people) consisted of a 30-minute drive from Reykjavik to the edge of the glacier where my girlfriend and I spent about 2 minutes standing inside a small opening in the glacier, and then a 30-minute drive back to Vik.

To add insult to injury, when I emailed the tour company to suggest that they might want to update their tour description, they just told me I was wrong and that I didn't have the experience I had... In retrospect, there is no amount of money I would have spent to do this tour, and it's one of the few things we did during our 10-day trip to the south coast that I would NOT recommend anyone do.

Wonderful and very unique hiking experience
Sep. 2021
I am very glad I booked the tour. It was a unique experience for me and unlike any outdoor activity I had done before. The ride in a super jeep, The drive through the black sand desert leading up to the glacier, walking on sheets of ice up to and into the ice cave, everything was very unique for me.

The guide was funny and willing to answer the questions. He gave good information and instructions about the use of crampons, how to walk on ice etc.

If the photos you see as part of the tour advertisements are your only criteria to go on this tour, then expect to see a different site when you get there. The face of the glacier keeps changing and so do the ice caves.

Dear SVPal123, A huge thank you for taking the time out and leaving us a positive review. We really appreciate that a lot. We are so glad to hear you enjoyed the tour. Thank you for mentioning our incredible guide. We are happy you enjoyed his company. You are absolutely right! Due to high weather temperatures it keeps changing, but since glacier is always forming new ice caves, you can always explore new ones if needed! Looking forward to your next visit! Greetings from Iceland.

Misleading and deceptive marketing - pictures online are not what you'll visit
Jul. 2021
The description and pictures posted is very misleading and deceptive. The pictures you see on the website (the beautiful blue and black caves) are pictures of an ice cave that has recently collapsed and is no longer in existence. The tour group will bring you to another, underwhelming site (still an ice cave, but nothing like the pictures posted).

The actual cave that you'll visit is small (the picture attached is all you'll see). The overall experience is nonetheless quite cool overall (though we wouldn't have paid the full fare if we knew the the actual ice cave is much smaller than that pictured), but we were annoyed by the lack of transparency provided.

Dear Travelers852, We appreciate your feedback. The original cave indeed collapsed due to high weather temperatures, but since glacier is always forming new ice caves, the new one was also found and we're taking our customers to explore this new formed ice cave. The pictures and the description on the website are already changed. Once again please accept our apologies for your expectations not being met, even so we hope you enjoyed your stay in Iceland. Warm wishes from Iceland.

Magical and Beautiful Katla Ice Cave,
Jun. 2021
This was one of the highlights of my trip to Iceland, Best tour to see beautiful Katla Ice Cave in summer. Words cannot describe the colors of the ice formations on the cave and surrounding rivers and snow and gravel roads to get there. Our driver was a hero. On that day he drove us through rain and slushy ice. You have to walk through the snow to reach the Ice Cave. Literally like a scene from Star Wars. You see the Blue Ice Cave from a far. KATLA ICE CAVE - stunning, a must ser
We did the katla ice cave tour from Vik.
It probably was the most wonderful experience we have ever had.
A 40 minute drive in a super-jeep in a lunar environment kickstarted the tour. Then we roamed around on foot at the bottom of thr glacier, walking on ice and volcanic ash. Then we entered the cave. It has wonderful colors. It’s tricky to walk inside so you have to remember yourself to stop and enjoy the moment and don’t just look down at your feet on small wood bridges on a glacial river.
The guide was amazing. Vert funny and loved his sense of humor. Also very explicative about what we saw.
10/10 would recommend, as in the summer this is one of the few ice caves open to tourists. Probably in winter there are more spectacular ones.

We expected way more..
Jul. 2020
We expected way more..

We did the "Under the Volcano Katla Ice Cave Tour". The ride from Vik with the Superjeep to the caves was okay, a beautiful view that's for sure! Once we came near the cave the jeep was parked and we had to walk over bridges and through some melted glacier water to get to the entrance of the cave. We were full of excitement for all that had happened and what to expect next. But here is where we got disappointed. Out group was split into two groups, one had to go first while the other had to wait outside. When it was our turn to get into the cave we thought that we had to walk for 30minutes inside of the cave with an amazing view. We only got around 20meters inside of the cave where we had to stand next to each other on a small icy island to take pictures while our guide got the other half back outside. The cave was much longer but we couldn't go much deeper. We just stood on the same place for 10minutes to take pictures until the guide came and gave a lecture of how the cave was build and we had to get out slowly. After that we got back to the jeep and took another way back to Vik. Our guide was okay, and we know that the cave changes every day and it's unpredictable, but we're not going to do this again because it's too expensive for what it actually is.

Dear aeseas, Thank you for taking the time to write us a review. We apologize for the fact that your experience with us did not live up to your expectations. The safety and wellbeing of our customers is our number one priority. Our guides are well-trained professionals with years and years of experience in their field. The guide carries the responsibility to evaluate if the site or parts of it are completely safe to go to at the time of the visit. On that particular day, it was not safe to go any further. We understand your disappointment, however, Icelandic weather conditions are not something we can control. We hope your overall experience has been somewhat positive and we'll see you on one of our tours sometime in the future.
