Let's make traditional Icelandic slátur! On a beautiful farm just outside of Reykjavík, you will learn the art of preparing, cooking and eating the most authentic food known to Icelanders. The food in question is a called "Slátur" in Icelandic. There are two types of slátur, and you will make both: blood pudding (blóðmör) and liver sausage (lifrarpylsa).
The preparing of slátur is a messy, but entertaining affair. The ingredients for slátur are sheep's blood, chopped or minced sheep's fat, sheep's liver, oatmeal and whole milk amongst other things. You will mix the ingredients together, then provided with a 'boiling bag' for you to pour the ingredients into and sew it shut. Finally, we will put the bags into a pot and let it boil for an hour.
While our Slátur is boiling, we will also be tasting other traditional Icelandic food like a fermented shark, rye bread, dried fish and sheeps pate amongst other things. Because of this, we recommend booking the class at the start of your trip so you know what to buy in convenience stores while in Iceland.
We will also take some time outside the kitchen, exploring the Hraðastaðir farm. We will walk around the area and meet the animals that live there. The farm has kittens, bunnies, guinea pigs, chinchillas, common quail, a pig, chickens, goats, sheep, and horses. And of course, you get to hold the bunnies and kittens, pet most of the animals and feed the horses with fresh grass.
Once we get back from our walk around the farm, we sit down to eat the food we prepared and enjoy this unique environment together. Hopefully, you will leave with a full belly and a smile on your face, and with more than a little insight into the culinary practices of this small island of ours.
