Easily explore the South Shore of Iceland in a day on this guided, small-group tour in a luxury minibus. After pickup in Reykjavik, take in the unique Icelandic scenery as you travel to stops including the Skogafoss and Seljalandsfoss waterfalls, Solheimajokull Glacier, black sand beaches, the village of Vik, and more.
You will be picked up from your accommodation or nearest pick up point in Reykjavik between 8:30am and 9am to drive out of the city, up over Hellisheidi mountain region and then across open farmland areas, a drive of around 1 hour 45 minutes. The first stop is simply a bathroom break before driving a short distance to reach the first of the amazing features of the South Shore region.
From here, the scenery becomes dramatic, with short journeys between glaciers, coastal cliffs and black sand beaches.
The first stop is the powerful Skogafoss waterfall with its 60 metre (200ft) drop and formidable spray. On sunny days, the waterfall often has a rainbow to add to the view. From Skogafoss we head to Solheimajokull Glacier which tumbles down from the Myrdalsjokull ice cap. Here, we park the bus and walk for around 20 minutes over surreal black sand and rock outwash plains to reach the edge of the glacier and get close to the white, blue and grey ice. At such close quarters, you get a real feel for the scale and grandeur of the glacier.
After exploring the edge of the ice, we walk back to the bus and drive a little farther east to Reynisfjara black sand beach which is near to the village of Vik and Dyrholaey headland. Make a stop of around 1 hour at Reynisfjara which boasts a spectacular black sand beach, basalt columns and cliffs, sea stacks and in summer between May and August there are often puffins roosting and nesting on the grassy ledges along the cliffs. The beach also has a nice café where you will also be able to get some lunch.
Then turn back west along the coastal road at the foot of Eyjafjallajokull volcano and make a stop at Seljalandsfoss waterfall. This beautiful column of water tumbles off the cliffs and you have the possibility of walking around behind the falls and through the spray, so be sure to bring your waterproofs, as you might get wet. This is saved this stop for last, as getting wet at the end of the day is much better than starting the day wet.
Then drive back to Reykjavik where you will be dropped you off at your accommodation.
We booked two tours (South Shore & Golden Circle) with Iceland Horizon and they were both amazing! David (the owner) is an awesome tour guide. I would highly recommend using Iceland Horizon for these tours. We enjoyed being in a small group rather than being...More
We booked the three tours they offer (Snaefellsness, South Shore and Golden Circle) and they were amazing. Totally worth it. Our guides, Addy and David, are really friendly and they know almost everything about Iceland and its culture. The minibus experience makes the tour cozier.
If one only has a limited number of days to see some major sights, this tour packs in two lovely waterfalls, an impressive black sand beach, the edge of a glacier, and interesting turf huts - knowledgeable guide with good knowledge of geo history -...More
The whole experience was made memorable by our guide, and company owner, David. He made us feel very special as the group was quite small, unlike the larger coach tours. Every aspect of the tour was outstanding and we returned to our hotel feeling that...More
