Overview
Get close to nature in the way of old Icelanders on your 2 or 4-hour horseback riding experience from Reykjavik, dependent on transfer option. Hop on a small, sturdy, Icelandic horse, a breed originally brought here by the Vikings, and enjoy a relaxing ride through lava-laden scenery past mountains, lakes, and moors. Your 1.5- to 2-hour ride will be matched to your ability and led by an instructor. Hot drinks, riding equipment and round-trip hotel transfers included.
What to Expect
On arrival, meet your instructor to adivse of your ability level — beginner, intermediate, or experienced.

Get up-close to the Icelandic horses, learning about this gentle breed. Descendants of Viking horses brought here in the 10th century, these sturdy, good-nature steeds are known for their tölt, a four-beat gait that makes riding on rugged terrain smooth and comfortable.

Next, watch a short instructional video, don your provided riding gear, and hop into the saddle. Learn to ease your horse into the tölt, and set out behind your instructor. Soon afterwards, having watched you riding, your instructor will split you into three groups – beginners, intermediates and experienced.

Enjoy your 1.5- to 2-hour ride. Beginners ride slowly over easy terrain, with intermediate and experienced riders tackling more challenging routes at different paces. Just advise your instructor if you want to go slower or faster.

As you ride, soak in the beautiful scenery. Weave through lava fields and moorland, passing volcanic mountains and lakes.

After your trek, savor coffee, tea, or hot chocolate at the stables.

An 11 on a Scale of 10

If you have the chance to ride with Ishestar Stables, run, don't walk, to do so. (Actually, they have a van to pick you up, so you don't even have to run.) Everything about the experience is first rate. Examples: 1. The stables: extremely well-run...More

Great Experience

I was an avid rider as a youth but have not been on a horse in ten years. I was needlessly worried when we had to rate our own ability level to be paired with our horse. We also broke into 2 groups, mine was...More

Staff was great! What a great ride thru the hillside

The staff was so super helpful and friendly. They were always checking on everyone and asking to take pictures. Horses were calm and always wanted to eat! lol Such a great tour minus a little rain but it's an enjoyable couple hours. Only wish they...More

I had a really great time I feel like I was matched with an appropriate horse for my experience; I am not a beginner but not an expert either! When I initially was paired with Freygur he started doing yoga stretches which I thought was...More

Great experience friendly staff

I liked the manager of the farm. She was very nice and matched people to horses. There are two different tracks you can take. Beginner (relaxed and slow) or advanced. The horses are well trained and very calm.

Yes easily possible to do the Horse Riding with such a long stay over time. Reckon an hour to Reykjavik centre minimum from the airport. Horse riding is a couple of hours. I’d actually recommend a few hours at Blue Lagoon... More
