About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Lisa B0 contributionsDisappointingly cancelledDisappointingly cancelled. We booked a two part trip - whale watching in the day this was cancelled in during the day before the booking due to the weather. The second part - northern lights wasn’t cancelled at the same time so didn’t give us the ability to try and find something else to do. Ultimately both parts were cancelled - due to the weather and potential danger being out on a boat. Fully understand the reasonings why it was cancelled but very disappointed as we couldn’t rearrange as we went home the following day - the storm completely knackered our holiday, cost us a fortune and we spent more time watching Netflix in our room than enjoying the countryWritten 7 February 2025
- TiffonLocation0 contributionsAn absolute triumph! When we arrived in Iceland the weather was not ideal. The initial cruise was cancelled as it was just too cloudy! Elding called us to rearrange. We went out for the cruise the night before we left.... and what a fabulous night we had. We were treated to a wonderful display of lights from the Aurora Borealis. Apparently one of the brightest they had seen in a few days. The cruise was an awesome way to see the lights, there was a bar on board, and the staff were great. The weather also played ball and it was calm out at sea. The best bit, was you could literally just watch and take it all in with you own eyes, as they had someone on board taking photos, which you were able to download after the event. Thank you to the girl who was talking us through the evening. She had so much energy and enthusiasm, she was an absolute joy!Written 23 January 2025
- lorrainemG6853PZ0 contributionsBEAUTIFUL NORTHERN LIGHTSVery well orchestrated tour. Great tour guide, and we were rewarded with the Green Lady dancing in the sky ! I was able to have the photographs taken by Elding sent to me via email, which is a nice thing to have.Written 22 January 2025
- Wendy R0 contributionsUnforgettable day and night .What I can say absolutely amazing trip humpback whales seen for and about an hour plus seals and birds . Then the northern lights came out as soon as we set off the staff were brilliant on both trips . Highly Recommend 🐋🇮🇸Written 21 January 2025

- E8170IPjordanh0 contributionsExcellent crew and tripReally good trip! Organised and we saw the northern lights. Our trip was cancelled on the first night due to the weather but booked in for the next evening. I’ve never had an issue with sea sickness and have been on many boats. But ended up being sick which is absolutely nothing to do with the company, but a word of wording in that I have never ever had sea sickness, be prepared!Written 30 December 2024
- rfu20180 contributionsOnly lights on this tour are shining on poor value accompanied by bad customer service.Very disappointed with overall experience. The weather was awful and all-day long people (our guide on another tour) told us it was not going to be likely that we would see any Northern Lights! We checked twice with company, and they said, "it looks good" and they were optimistic. I believe they should have offered a refund!! So, we piled onto a crowded old boat where the tour guide pointed out Mars (!) and a few whales in the distance and in the dark. They could have offered free hot chocolate but instead charged a lot for what we drank. When we returned, they offered us vouchers and when we told them we were leaving the next day they were dismissive and rude and said why don't you extend your trip! VERY disappointed with this tour. Poor value accentuated by NO customer service. Not a great reflection of Iceland. A tourist trap for $100 a person!Written 29 December 2024
- statwest0 contributionsGood experience despite being cancelled due to weatherIt unfortunately got cancelled due to weather, but the manner of the prompt updates given to us and the refund option made me want to give this review. Next time, we plan to stay in Iceland longer to ensure a chance to see the lights, and plan to use them based on this experience.Written 19 December 2024
- robertsM1665OU0 contributionsSo professional, well runThe crew was very professional in so many ways. They advised everyone to stay down on the lowest deck where it was warm and they would tell us when it was time to try to see the Northern Lights. They had huge signs reminding everyone not to leave their phone in the (free) snow bib overalls that they provided for guests (I almost forgot mine lol). And finally, they gave out tips on how to photograph the Northern Lights, which I hadn't even thought about! They also played classic pop music from the U.S. So glad I went with this tour company as this was the highlight of my trip and a dream come true seeing the Northern Lights!Written 3 December 2024
- sherihsanders0 contributionsWOW - so much fun!WOW - what a night! We were so lucky and saw the Northern Lights for over an hour. They were spectacular! All of the crew was so nice and helpful. Booking and boarding process was very easy. 10/10 recommend!Written 3 December 2024
- Tricia H0 contributionsWould definitely recommend! My wife and I took our honeymoon in Iceland almost solely to see the lights. We decided to try this tour on our first night in case we didn’t see them (since they let you come back if you don’t). The boat had three levels, with the very top outside. We waited in the warm boat for a while, then decided to wait on deck in case they appeared. No luck. After an hour and a half I figured we would be coming back the next day, but then they announced that the lights were barely visible. We rushed back out, and then the lights fully emerged. We watched for over half an hour. It was absolutely perfect away from the city lights!Written 2 December 2024
- krbsl1230 contributionsGreat tour.We really enjoyed our Nothern Lights Cruise, they were easy to work with to find good night to see the northern lights and we found a night we did see the lights. The crew was very helpful the location in old harbor is very convenient.Written 24 November 2024
- mirah8860 contributionsGreat tripSaw amazing lights! Snowsuits that are provided are amazing very warm able to stay outside for the whole 2 hrs and I’m from Florida! Didn’t feel crowded like it did when I went whale watching with same companyWritten 22 November 2024
- kathb7060 contributionsGreat, even when there was a problemHad booked the whale watching and northern lights package, but unfortunately the whale watching during the afternoon was cancelled due to the conditions. When I then arrived in the evening for the northern lights cruise, there was an issue insofar as my tour operator had booked the experience with Elding for the wrong date (they’d had me down for October, when in fact I was there in November). After some time while the staff on the desk tried to work out what had happened, as they hadn’t been expecting me, they gave me a ticket and said they would sort it out with my tour operator. So despite the issue, which was beyond my control, I was still able to go without any problem at all. The staff couldn’t have been better or more helpful. We didn’t actually see the northern lights, but as a natural phenomenon they can’t be guaranteed. The guide on board seemed very knowledgeable and the boat was comfortable. I spent most of my time on the deck outside but went in as we were o the way back. The inside was comfortable and warm with plenty of seating.Written 19 November 2024
- L2187ZNvickim0 contributionsWhale watching as must, but Give the Northern lights a missThe company we used, Edlings we couldn’t fault. The staff were all lovely and knowledgeable. We did whale watching on the morning (9am). Sea was a little choppy, and it was windy, so I would recommend using the overalls they provided when outside. Kept us warm. Obviously, due to whale movement you are not guaranteed to see them, but we saw a humpback and some porpoise. Humpback was right next to the boat. Lovely. We went back at 9pm for the Northern Lights tour. I honestly felt this was a waste of money and would say stay away and spend your money on something else. We went out, put our overalls a on and headed outside. The guide told us we needed a clear sky to see them. It was cloudy, so not sure why they took us. When the boat stopped, the guide then said your eyes need to adjust to the sky for about 20 minutes and you MIGHT be able to see them. Otherwise you might see them through your camera. My partners eyes are perfect, I wear glasses. After a while, my partner said he thought he could see something (I couldn’t) and to point my camera a certain way. There was the tiniest bit of green tinge. Not worth it at all. A few weeks earlier, we walked out of our house in Wigan, and saw red northern lights straight away without our eyes taking time to adjust, and they were much better than what we saw on the boat. Comparison photos attached. We think all the images they post are all enhanced to pull tourists in. Wish we’d spent our money on something else as it want a cheap experience.Written 18 November 2024

We booked this for the start of our trip, and I’m glad we did as the weather was very rough that day and unfortunately didn’t see any whales on this occasion but did spot a couple porpoises and a seal. We were rebooked on another boat trip complimentary which were able to do later in the week with a day of our choice. That morning the water was like a lake it was completely still and we had the most beautiful sunrise, we were lucky enough to spot Frodo the Humpback whale about 5 mins into our trip who was feeding by the harbour! We were able to spend about 2 hours with him, he got extremely close to the boat on multiple occasions and was doing belly rolls and showing off! The guide was extremely knowledgeable and personable and very passionate so it was great to listen to her! We also spotted a pod of porpoises and some inquisitive seals on the trip too. We went out to see if we could spot anything else , which we didn’t but the views were breathtaking and the sea had frozen over in parts and just looked like a postcard! Would recommend this trip hands down , and would also recommend dressing up warm and being prepared if you are going to be outside for the entirety , they have free rain coats, overalls , blankets to borrow and even provide free anti sea sickness tablets. The boat was clean and had some cafe facilities onboard , all in all very impressed!

Incredible experience above all expectations. My daughter and I were visiting from the UK for her birthday and some 14 years ago had attempted to see whales off the coast of California but we were unlucky. Coming to Iceland this was top of our list and I chose Elding as they are a family operation and have been running tours for many years. From the moment of booking and then embarking the boat I knew we were in good hands. Emily our marine biologist guide for the trip was clearly highly knowledgeable and experienced. We were astonished at how soon there was a sighting and then more, culminating when a resting humpback whale drifted so near to the boat and seemed undisturbed by us. What a privilege to see these amazing creatures at such close quarters - it was beyond our hopes and dreams. Now we have memories that we will re-live and treasure forever. Thank you Elding team, for all your care to ensure we all had the best possible chance to sight the whales and your great care in navigating around the sightings to ensure the welfare of the whales is paramount. I could not recommend Elding more highly to others seeking a whale watching experience above all others. Sincere thanks and we look forward to returning to Iceland one day and booking again more tours with Elding!

We did the three hour whale watching tour with Elding earlier this week and had a brilliant experience. The booking process and boarding the boat was all straightforward and well organised.
The wind was extremely fierce but fortunately Elding provide thermal overalls for you to wear free of charge during the trip. Thanks to these overalls, we were able to stay outside on deck the whole time in the freezing conditions! If visiting in winter, I would strongly recommend wearing the overalls.
We only saw the one humpback whale on our trip, but this was wonderful in itself. Anyone who takes a whale watching tour has to appreciate that the teams do their very best to provide views of whales, but this is not always possible. Thank you, Elding!

Dear aliced0929,
Thank you for your kind review! We’re thrilled you had a brilliant experience and appreciated the warm overalls that helped you stay on deck despite the fierce wind.
Seeing a humpback whale in its natural habitat is always special, and we’re glad you enjoyed the well organised process from start to finish.

Left feeling a little disappointed. I know the whales cannot be guaranteed but I feel the tour operators could have been a little more observant in regards to everyone getting a good view of the whale yes the one whale. It was a pretty cold day with a weather front moving in. We arrived at the terminal early and checked in at the Elding office to get our tickets. We then made our way up the pier to the boat. While waiting all children were given life vests to wear, while adults were not compulsory. When we were eventually allowed on board most people went inside until the boat was underway. You could get drinks etc, although my wife commented the hot drink she had was in a very small cup and not worth the money. Toilets were available as well. We did not travel too far before the captain started to look for signs of whales. By this time the weather was getting worse with a brisk wind with rain intermixed. Lots of people made use of the overhauls that were available. These seemed to provide good protection and were provided as part of the fare. Eventually a single Humpback was sighted. It would pop up for a few seconds then submerge. The frequency it returned to the surface was all over the place from a minute to several minutes at a time. Apparently they can submerge for up to 30 minutes !. Everyone was pointing camaras hoping to get a shot but to be honest it was difficult. The main problem was the boat itself. As soon as there was sighting the captain would point the bow towards it. The tour guide was sat in an elevated position and would advise of any sightings by using the clock system. 12 o'clock was the Bow , 6 o'clock stern etc. There was only room was around 8 people at the front of the boat and everyone else trying to get a view had to stand behind them as more of the sightings were in front of the boat as the captain would point the boat that way. Off course people worked this out and would not move from the front. Every now and then the whale would pop up maybe a few hundred yards away at the side but then the boat would then move to face that position. In the end I felt like giving up as there was little chance of getting a decent view.
There were 3 boats on the water all trying to get sight of the one whale. After a while the boat turned and headed back to the harbour without any announcement that we were doing so. Considering the trip cost £237 for 3 of us and you had to make your way to the harbour, I consider it poor value for money. Yes Whales are unpredictable but the frustration I felt with the layout of the boat made it feel like a poor experience.

Dear lawtonw2,
Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We understand that wildlife tours can sometimes be unpredictable, and while we always do our best to provide the best possible viewing opportunities, we’re sorry that you found the layout of the boat frustrating.
While our crew aim to provide equal viewing opportunities, while respecting the unpredictable wildlife, positioning can sometimes be challenging. We appreciate your feedback and will take it into account for future improvements.

We did the Classic Whale Watching Tour for three hours. The tour itself was fine, but the wildlife was amazing to see! I think that if the tour company would put in effort to give more information about the dolphins and whales and even the climate/environment of Iceland that it would have made the tour experience better. Having looked into it, I would recommend the premium option since the boat is faster so you can go between wildlife areas easier. If you tend to get sea sick, the classic option is good because the boat is huge and you did not feel the waves too much.

Dear Juless5,
Thank you for your feedback. We're glad to hear that you enjoyed the wildlife sightings on our Classic Whale Watching Tour.
We understand the importance of providing the right amount of commentary. We aim to offer just enough information to enhance the experience without overwhelming our guests. Your suggestion is valuable, and we'll ensure to find the right balance for future tours.
Your recommendation of the premium option for faster travel between wildlife areas is noted, and we're glad the classic option suited your needs regarding sea sickness.

A 3 hour tour with a great guide (Olivia) who was clear about safety & facts about the 4 humpbacks & pod of white-beaked dolphins that we saw. Warm clothing was available to have an extra warm layer but our weather was good. Lots of room on board but, despite great weather, we regretted not bringing gloves & were glad to warm up on the way back in the indoor area. We stayed on the upper deck during the tour but the lower deck area around the bow was opened once we were at sea & gave closer views of the dolphins playing around the boat. We were envious of the ribs that travelled faster & closer to the whales but they will have needed the jumpsuits to keep warm!

This was a fantastic experience. We took the 9am trip on 14th February 2024. The sea was calm and flat, which was a bonus as I suffer from sea sickness. Elding provide overalls in all sizes that cover you completely so going out on deck you are warm and dry.
I was amazed how soon we saw our first whale after setting off. They are relatively close within the harbour and we saw many different whales on the trip. Our tour guide was very good at pointing out where they were and they turned the boats so that we could better see them.
Obviously you are on the boat with many other tourists and everyone wants to be at the front of the rail but the boat was laid out in such a way that you could usually find a spot where you could see, and I saw a lot of the whales from the back of the boat on the lower level.
The cherry on the top was that Elding also take photos throughout the trip which they let you download for free, which were obviously much better than my point and miss attempts with my phone camera. (the one I'll post here is one of mine)

Great trip. Recommend going in morning or late afternoon. Most animals are most active at dusk and dawn. If you want to see them, your best bet is to follow their schedule not your own :) We were able to see 4 humpbacks and a pod of dolphins. One whale fluked for us and two whales were swimming together the entire time. Recommend getting into the overalls ASAP and bringing warm hat and gloves. It is cold even during summer! And please don't forget to tip your guide!

What a fun trip! We saw two humpback whales several times. It was very obvious that the tour boat was actively excited to see the whales, too. It wasn't an "ok we've seen a whale and can go back now..." They would turn the boat so both sides could have a chance at sighting, then kept actively seeking out more whales. I was very impressed and pleased with our experience. Elding (the tour co) was very easy to find, the overalls were clean and kept us warm and dry. There was even a little museum when we first entered. AND they sent us a link to the photos they took that day/tour, as well as a whale watching diary entry listing what all marine life we saw on our tour.

A really well organised trip out, it was 3 hours in total and that time flew by. The crew on the boat were brilliant. Francesco was providing commentary on our excursion and providing information about the species we might see and all of the ones we did see. He was really engaging and made sure no one missed any sightings whilst onboard. Elding also provide a link to the photos taken of the whales, no need to try and get a rubbishy shot of the tip of a fin - you can enjoy the experience and be fully emersed in the moment. Worth every Icelandic Krona! Would highly recommend visitors take a trip out with these guys and support whale watching.

Can I book this if a member of the group is pregnant?
Written 11 January 2024
I think so. The boat is large, slow and fairly stable. There is a lot of seating outside and inside, where there are large windows to look out.
My main concern would be the steps which can be quite steep. Wear 'sensible footwear' and, in my opinion, you may need assistance as you descend.

I would say the walk is around 800 metres. If you use Google maps the location of your hotel, and the Elding ticket office are shown if you zoom in. As I said in my review, seriously look closely at the weather before doing this. Enjoy if you do.
