- iphegenia0 contributionsExcellent tour of fascinating placesExcellent tour of key spots to see. If you have to choose only 1 tour, I'd choose this one, the sights were amazing. Tour guide was very informative. Bus was large and comfortable. Grey Line was very accommodating as we missed our bus and they allowed us to join a later tour. Only downside is that because it's a big bus there are lots of drop-offs at the end of the day but not really a problem. Highly recommend!Written 5 December 2024

- 243franciner0 contributionsMemorable for the Wrong ReasonsWe traveled with another couple to Iceland and this tour was part of a travel package. This is a large bus tour so if that isn't your thing you will want to find another option. The buses leave from the main terminal so it is necessary to either arrange pickup (a smaller bus) from your hotel or a nearby hotel if the bus doesn't offer service at your hotel. Other options to get to the departure area at the main bus terminal are to walk or take a taxi. The tour is popular so the bus is crowded/full. They make many stops at various tourist oriented restaurants/gift shops during the day. A positive is that the restrooms are free at these stops which is not the case at the central bus terminal. After the first stop, my husband and I reloaded the bus and found that other people had taken our seats which left us no option but to sit in someone else's seats. This practice became problematic for many until the tour guide finally got assertive and told people they had to return to their original seats and stay there. The whole seat situation produced an unpleasant "climate" on the bus and seemed juvenile; a bunch of adults clamoring back to the bus to grab "preferred" seats. The situation could have been avoided if the guide would have announced at the start that seats would be kept for the duration of the tour. The Golden Circle Tour includes three main stops. Important to note that if you go during the colder season, you will find that the paths to the geyser and waterfall will be icy. We are from North East Wisconsin so we know about ice and snow but....I would have brought some crampons for safety if I'd have known that some of the paths to viewing areas are solid ice. By the way, we were wearing waterproof Merrill and Timberlake hiking boots and they were not sufficient for safe walking. Lastly, advise for persons with any mobility issues; choose another tour venue. The buses are not "kneeling" so you have to be able to do steps with a fairly large last step to reach the ground. Getting to the sites (particularly the geyser and waterfall) involves walking on uneven surfaces that are wet and slippery. There are minimal hand rails.Written 3 December 2024
- azamora30 contributionsA nice snapshot of the beauty of IcelandThe views of all the stops were so beautiful! However. I think this tour is best done in the warmer months. It was so cold that we could not really do any hiking or exploring. We saw what we were there to see, took pictures, and then headed inside for warmth in the restaurant or gift shop. The guide does not provide any information while at each site - any info received was while on the bus.Written 2 December 2024

Very much enjoyed the day going around Snaefellsnes. Our driver and guide was Margret, who was knowledgeable (especially about geology and community history) and personable, and added in bathroom stops and photo opps for us. The amount of time in each place was appropriate to what there was to see and do. We especially enjoyed the beaches and waterfalls. We visited in July, and the weather was great but of course windy. It was a long day but didn't feel long until afterward.

The peninsula is often called "Iceland in small" and it makes sense.. it really has al lot of spectacular sights that often feel like a "best of Iceland" collection. We took some random exits from the main road out of curiosity and found some brilliant places where we were completely alone as well. It's nice to drive along the coast and visit all the small towns, although they're all pretty quiet without much to do or places to eat. There are places where you might spot killer whales if you are really, really Lucky. If you have a day or two left you can spend it here for some quiet time and brilliant (coasta) scenery.

Had a very nice day stopping at loads of locations including Church Mountain and a 6,000 year old Volcano. Gilfi our tour guide was good, answered our questions that me and other people on the bus had. If you go and it’s snowy must advise to wear crampons at every location due to the ice!
Great day out!

Wow! A long day, but worth it to see the diverse scenery of this amazing country. From cliffs, lava fields, waterfalls, black sand beach, mountains, a church to some seals. It was truly beautiful.

I will not talk about the attractions themselves (it's 5 stars) as there are lot of reviews on it. This review is only regarding the way the tour was conducted by Gray Line.
Positive:
All places are covered as advertised (though the guide announced she will show us an additional place which is already part of itinerary as through she was doing charity).
Negatives:
Guide: No sense of humor & bit grumpy (her first name rhymes with 'bully' - rightly so), not well informed (she kept talking about population of Iceland and other very general topics which are widely available on internet). Don't expect the guides to share any interesting information. This was my experience with Gray Line guides with who I had booked two other tours in Iceland. I could find only the guide associated with Golden Circle Classic Tour to be very well informed and had a bit of sense of humor also (I forgot his name but the tour managed by him was on 31 March 2018 coach 1 starting at 8:30 AM). The Northern light tour guide was unable to explain the northern lights phenomenon properly!
Itinerary: Very packed. The guide provides more time for convenience break (35 mins) than for sight seeing (20-25 mins). This is to ensure that they (guide + coach driver) get their free breakfast from the restaurant. Greyline guides are more worried about getting free breakfast than letting you spend more time at the attractions. Aren't they supposed to have breakfast before they start the tour so that we get to spend more time at the attractions? I did not see any of my co-travelers eat breakfast!
The guide provided only 20 mins to cover a long walking distance and confronted three people for being 3 mins late and embarrassed them in front of others. They don't take into account people with varying fitness level and provide sufficient time. However, the guide was happy to provide 60 mins for lunch soon after this (hey, the guide needs to get their free lunch. They have such arrangement with all the cafes/restaurant they take us to).
Buses: Ok-ish. The first thing the guide 'ordered' us was not to put any objects in the front seat pouch as they are delicate! The toilets are locked (Grayline excuse will be - we make so many stops (I told you the reason above) and it will become smelly inside) and you cannot use it. Again, not everyone is same and some may be required to use the restroom more frequently due to certain medical conditions. The USB charger ports did not work in 3 out of 4 buses I had been in. Less said the better about the on-board WiFi quality.
I'm not sure if others noticed but the drivers switch off the heaters in the coach during the last leg of the trip. I had to go to the guide during "South Iceland, Waterfalls and Black Sand Beach" trip and ask him to switch on the heater as many of us were struggling.
Will I visit Iceland again?... A big yes but I will certainly not take Gray Line. Best option would be to hire a car and explore the shortlisted attractions so that you get more time at each place. Also keep in mind
1. The big buses operated by this company doesn't allow them to stop (or park) at wonderful places accessible by smaller vehicles close to main roads.
2. The guides don't accompany you to the point of attractions, forget about explaining about them in detail.
3. Don't get fooled by the photos in their website. It's impossible to get such angles without hiking some distance for most of the attractions (and the tour guides don't give you so much time due to vested interests).

We went on 3 different tours: Snaefellsnes, Blue Lagoon and South Iceland tour. We enjoyed all 3 tours but the guide on Snaefellsnes was a lot better than the other 2. The wi-fi in the bus was inconsistent. The toilet inside the bus was locked and the guides were discouraging us from using it. The seats were okay and the itinerary was good. The pick up was on time.

This was a great day trip and we were really impressed with our tour guide (Hildur), she was very organised and knowledgable and a great driver. Don't arrive late for pick up as they were very prompt. Bring sufficient clothes and footwear and we experienced sunshine and snowstorm. The places we visited were great but always pretty rushed because of the schedule. I would always recommend driving yourself but if you are looking for a tour then this is a good one.
I had read that it is advisable take packed lunch on tours generally to save money. This is tricky as there is a no eating on the bus policy and the lunch stop has no picnic area (not a problem in warm weather). However the lunch place chosen is no more expensive than anywhere else in Iceland and you'll be ready for a warm up and a hot drink in the winter months.
We were disappointed that there was no stop at the viewing point for Kirkjufell (one of the most photographed mountian's). I was with my mum (age 70) *There is no relevant option to click below for this tripadvisor

The area covered on this trip was, quite naturally, very spectacular, and the trip covered some very good places. Arnarstapi was definitely a highlight for me, since seeing the cliffs and the thousands of seabirds on them was quite spectacular. The cave tour was splendid and really added to the experience, and the guide for that was amazing: funny and knowledgable. The company guide was less phenomenal. He clearly was trying very hard, but he just wasn't that interesting. Still, overall a worthwhile trip.

My boyfriend and I took this tour in mid-March. There was quite a bit of snow on the ground and some snow drifting across the road but no new snow falling. I was excited to learn about my surroundings--but the tour guide didn't have much to say. He sat up front and talked to the bus driver for the majority of the tour. He took the microphone down to talk into it just a couple of times, and other times, he took it down (which turned it on) and held it in his lap but didn't say anything to the group at all. All we heard was fuzzy static.
To be honest, it seemed like most of our stops were at convenience stores (one in the morning and one in the evening) and then at a small restaurant for lunch.
The drifting snow was so bad near the cave that after about 20 minutes of waiting in the bus, our guide told us that we would not be able to go into the cave. I understand this was a safety issue, but this was supposed to be one of our big stops!
The bottom line is that we spent a long time driving in the bus with zero commentary on what we were passing (example: apparently, we passed the National Park, but the guide didn't even mention it). At one point, we stopped because someone in the group begged the driver for a smoke break. That's the only reason.
Seeing Mt. Kirkjufell was incredible, and it really was beautiful scenery during the drive. I just wish the guide had talked to us. He seemed like a good guy and so did the driver; I can say this because they chatted with me and my boyfriend briefly during one of the first stops. All that to say, though, I pay for tours because they come with guides, and these guides are especially important when you're driving for long periods of time.
Disappointing.

First of all i recommend all to avoid it, here is why : first of all after we booked we discover they cant pick up us, they do pickups only from downtown, even if we are between their bus station and downtown, this matter was discussed by email.
We reach the day of our tour, after an aurora tour we went to sleep at 3 at 6 we woke up to reach the station with our own means ( by foot trough rain or expensive taxi, we went for taxi) we reach the station only to find out it was cancelled, considering we were staying here for 5 days only, it was 20% of our vacation which just got cancelled. We aproach desk to ask how come we didnt even receive a message email or something about that, we couldvd atleast rested and save on the taxi. Here is the worst part, to feel a bit better i wanted only an apology like sorry we didnt warn you please forgive us and if you would like we can offer this or that.
Instead i got a smug arrogant incompetent women, which first said they didn't have the means to comunicate with us due to booking being trough tripadvisor, when i showed her email from Grayline representative she still tried to argue, she kept repeating over and over " what tour do you want instead" when i asked for an apology at least fake one she still didnt give one by saying : i dont know I'm not responsible. Then i asked to talk with a grayline representative, she realized how stupid it was what she said because she was sitting there with grayline logo and all. Even then she refused to make an apology instead went searching for emails, copied one when we talked about the pickups and was trying to use that as a fake communication, then i showed her the entire email that it was about pickups 1 week ago and did not have anything to do with tour being canceled. Instead of acting like a normal operator with a client they did wrong to she kept trying to find excuses, i felt tired sad and so damn angry. i wasted time money and due to terrible luck also part of my vacation and you make it even a lot worse.
So that is it, I'm still to get the money back, really hope you avoid them because there are a lot more profesional and friendly tour operators, so it's not worth it waste your time with them.
Can we join this tour in Grundarfjordur, at the cruise ship port? This sounds like a great excursion.

We are wondering whether we should go to Snaefellsnes or the South Coast. We'll be visiting Iceland for the first time and we have only one day left in our itinerary.

Tricky. Depends what you really want to see. We really did enjoy Snaefellsnes and the wildlife and scenery was breathtaking. We also went along the South coast and did the glacier hike and did the waterfalls and Reynisfara beach Both were amazing but really depends what you want to see!

Is the Snaefellsjokull, The Glacier and The National Park Tour a Minibus or a big Tour Bus? How many people will be on the tour?

How does the pickup work? Will it be from our hotels in city centre? Or is it from one of the 3 designated stops?

It depends on which tour option you select, you can book the tour with or without hotel pick-up.
