Two ancient towns worth the trip
Two fascinating old towns with picturesque squares, with buildings from the tenth and twelfth centuries. Guide Jose Mendonca was informative and patient. We had adequate free time in both locations. Even with rain, it was a wonderful trip.

Great all around experience to Douro Valley!
Tour guide was excellent, he gave us a lot of detailed information in great English. The combination of historical site and vineyard tour and wine tasting, boat cruise then lunch was just what we were looking for.

      Amazing Cathedrals, Castles & Palaces
Tiago and Michael were great guides. We had rain the whole day but they tried their best to keep us dry. Tiago could speak a little bit louder so the whole group can hear. Other than that I really enjoyed the tour and places we visited.

Best activity of our whole vacation!
I went on a tour with Luís Neves and had an absolutely fantastic time. He was considerate of each person, tailored the conversation to our interests, and genuinely wanted to ensure we had the best time both during the journey and while in Portugal. He even offered to assist us with sorting out a reservation as we don’t speak Portuguese. The tour itself was ideal. Our favorite spot was at a local family vineyard where we had the absolutely most incredible lunch, surrounded by enchanting history, and great people. I booked this tour because of the reviews and my gosh they were spot on. Luís is a big part of that. I’d definitely go on more tours with the company, and especially with him.

      A beautiful snippet of Aveiro
The tour can be one hour longer. Also, the guide on the boat was much better than the guide on the bus. The guide was good but the story needs to be well formulated rather than some random information or data that no one will remember (and repeating the same information). One more tip would be to take a pause in between before switching the language. Other than this, the tour was well organized. Definitely, one can take thing short day trip tour. It’s a perfect overview of a nice small town. Highly recommended!

      Trip to Avairo
Carmo and Jose provided great service. Carmo has a lot of knowledge about Portugal, which she conveyed in an accessible way. I recommend this team. The bus is modern and has all the necessary amenities. One minus - the agency should consider extending the tour time, giving a little more free time.

We had a wonderful day of wine tasting education on our tour! The tour departed right on time (minus some struggles with meta construction) and our guide Silvia began her very thorough day of explaining the Duoro Valley and its history and a lot of fun facts. Silvia was very friendly and knowledgeable and was able to narrate in both English and Spanish. The driver, Manuel, was friendly and never felt unsafe with him at the wheel.

The wineries can be a bit chillier than Porto itself, so I recommend dressing accordingly. Both wineries included stunning views and an educational tour and of course port tasting. The lunch was served at the first winery, I chose the pork option which appeared to be more popular with the table we were seated at.

The river cruise is about an hour long with some beautiful views of the valley however is not narrated so be prepared to just enjoy the views and take pictures!

Definitely would recommend if you want an easy comfortable day trip and want to learn more about the history of Port and drink.

This is worth every penny of the 100 Euro cost. Bus takes about two dozen people through the valley, stops at two estates to taste their wines and ports, includes an hour boat cruise on the river and lunch at a spot overlooking terraced vineyards. Felipa was an excellent and well informed tour guide.

Went on this tour last October, and had a wonderful experience!
Silvia was our guide and she was so amazingly sweet and thoughtful. We travelled with a french couple and she literally explained everything in two languages: French and English. Not only is that extremely nice, I can only imagine the energy that takes :) The whole experience of driving through Douro, the wines, the people we spoke to and the delicious wines we could taste: would definitely recommend. Love, Dennis & Vera from the Netherlands

A full day out in a small group with an excellent guide and driver Daniel who made it a very interesting and informative trip there and back. The first port winery visit which was to a boutique producer was excellent, and the accompanying lunch was enjoyable. The river cruise was with other groups on a packed large boat which was only saved by the spectacular scenery. However the second visit in the afternoon to Croft’s was a total let down, especially after the morning’s visit where we were coached on how to recognise quality and aged port, as the port quality offered for sampling was incomparable. In addition the short tour around by the local guide whose English was almost unintelligible was not that interesting or attention holding. A real let-down after the morning. Luckily the weather held all day and a different route out of the valley and back to Porto did give more great views of the Douro and region. There are several tour options to the Douro valley with separate operators and prices, and so the advice is try to research which wineries will be visited on the day by the tour provider, which may be difficult given the lack of detail on-line, and select the tour according to one’s preferences.

The tour is described as a wine tasting but it is port wine that is sampled not table wine. This was disappointing because there are some nice table wines in the region. The two wineries visited both described the production of port; there was no need to repeat the process at the second winery. The lunch was well below the standard expected for the price of the tour: lukewarm soup that was unidentifiable, pathetic salad, main courses were below average as was the dessert. The table wine was very ordinary and lacking in quantity, only one bottle of red and one bottle of white per table.
The first stop on the tour was at Armende, a town with a church and a handful of shops and cafes. There was no mention of this in the advertised itinerary. The hour spent there would have been better spent at a winery sampling table wines.
The tour guide did not appear to be very knowledgeable and lacked personality. However the bus driver performed well on the winding roads in wet conditions.

Tour was mediocre at best. Some nice parts but mostly not good. What's not made clear is that the tour guide is essentially useless. No history, no explanations, no guiding. Our guide spent more time taking with the bus driver and other workers than interacting with anyone who paid for the tour. The itinerary does not follow what was shown on our trip advisor itinerary. In fact it followed the same tour that was $10 cheaper. There was an hour plus delay due to the driving route being blocked by a cycling competition. Lastly, the bus drivers drive like crazy. Not ours specifically but other drivers nearly ran over multiple people while we were waiting for our tour in the beginning. This tour company is the epitome of high volume and low quality.
The positives were the one wine tour (Croft) had a nice tasting and tour of the vineyard. We also bonded with other patrons over how bad the tour was and even eavesdropped on other tours guides giving good history and explanations. So at least there was that.
I would not recommend this company to anyone.

Douro valley tour was really amazing to see sucha beautiful views and lots of wine tasting. It’s totally worth it. Jessica was our host who was very sweet, lovely and always smiley made me feel welcomed. You could tell she is very passionate and enjoys her job. She entertained us throughout the journey on the bus by interacting with everyone, teaching us Portuguese language and singing a portugese song. Also, you meet people from all over the world, different cultures and age group which was nice to get to know each other. Everyone was lovely and friendly including the wine tours host. He was really funny and entertaining, made us laugh. Lunch was fantastic, you get to drink more wines again after wine tasting. I had a lovely group on my lunch table (from Dubai, Singapore, France, Canada and Thailand) with people with full of energy, positive vibes, and very welcoming that I didn’t feel like I was in solo trip and made my trip memorable.Thank you.

Sadly, I had a very bad experience as well especially as a solo travelLer. I went to the toilet after wine tasting and due to long queue on the toilet I was stuck there and when I came back everyone had left on a bus for a boat. They didn’t realise i was left behind as they miscounted the number of passenger on the bus. I felt terrified, helpless and was in tears because I asked for help to people around there, they don’t speak English. It was difficult to communicate and I didn’t have my host number to call her. Eventually, they were contacted and came back to pick me up but I missed my boat trip so couldn’t go on a boat which was the main highlight of the trip that I was desperately looking forward to it. It was really sad, and horrible experience in my life. Jessica was really kind, she hugged me and reassured me. She made sure I was ok and tried to help me to get another boat trip. Unfortunately, there were no any next day boat trip available and I didn’t get any refund, or compensation in return either. So I was really disappointed and bad memories on my last day of staying in Portugal. Lastly, I would also recommend to use the toilet before going back to home. Since, I didn’t go on a boat I didn’t use the toilet on a boat. After drinking lots of wine, I was dying to use the toilet. There were no any toilet services for next 1 hrs plus as it was in the highway. Honestly, it was awful and worst feelings. I must say starting was good but ending didn’t go well for me unfortunately. Overall. I would definitely recommend this trip but make sure to get the host number in case of situation like me and be there on a time that’s what I learnt from my experience.

There are many day tours to the Wineries on the Douro river. All the tours seem to go to the same places. The difference lies in are you in a large group or small. Is your lunch in a restaurant or at a winery and what kind of food is being provided. If you are doing the boat option, are you on a large book (40-50) or a smaller one, and how many wineries are you visiting. I read all the reviews of the trips, and looked at all the pictures. In the end I booked a trip and felt a bit cheated because it was not what I read. I simply did not expect to be with 38 other people which slowed everything down.

We drove 2 hours to the Douro. We then waiting until we took an hour boat cruise on a large boat that was very hot. We then waiting for our bus to pick us up and take us to a winery. The owners did not seem ready for us. In the end we had about 20 minutes to sample the Port they provided for us before we had to hurry back to the bus. We then drove to a restaurant for lunch. We had to wait there for the staff to get ready for us. We then had a nice lunch. Afterwards, behind schedule, we drove to the second winery and sampled two types of Port. Once again we had to hurry. Then we drove the 2 hours home. While my travel companions had a good time, if also felt like the trip was not quite as advertised. In retrospect, if you want to sample port. I would probably just stay in Porto and visit the different cellars and taste, or join a small tour group for about 30euros and do it with them.

Good morning from Living Tours, Thank you so much for your time in sharing your complete feedback about your experience. We are very sorry to hear that the tour didn’t go through your expectations. We apologize for the larger group. Our tours are characterized by smaller groups, but we suppose that you made the tour in a day that unexpectedly one of our guides got sick, so the only solution it was a bigger bus for all the guests (to not make a last-minute cancellation). The itinerary described it’s not the one of our tours (we don’t start by the cruise and we don’t go to a restaurant in the Wine Tour – we always have lunch in a vineyard). Pros: the meal at Favaios winery was lovely, and came with excellent wine. We enjoyed the wine tasting at Kopke winery a lot as well. We had a great group (~20 people) in the bus with us and had some great conversations over wine and food. The views of the Douro valley were absolutely breathtaking, both from mountainside and river cruise. Credit to our excellent driver for making us feel safe in a large bus navigating winding mountain roads.

Cons: the trip was advertised as only English, but our guide quickly informed us that it would be bilingual in French and English. It seems that it was advertised separately to French speakers as well to fill the bus. It was frustrating feeling that we were only getting half the information, and because of lengthily French interludes, there wasn’t as much of a sense of a continuous context or history. Instead it felt like we got somewhat disjointed trivia. The majority of the bus was English speakers with only a small handful of French speakers. Several others seemed frustrated by this as well

We took a Duoro valley day trip from Porto with Castro and we would highly recommend it! Book the smaller group tour (we only had 8 people) so it was a more personalized, comfortable small van rather than a large tour bus. He was so knowledgeable about the area. He also gave us insider tips like where to sit for the boat tour and made sure we were well hydrated the entire day. Would recommend to others!

Good morning from Living Tours, Dear Robin, We are grateful for your feedback. We are pleased to understand that you enjoyed your experience on your Wine Tour Douro Valley with our guide Castro! Although our tours run in small groups of between 8 and 29 people, such as this one, to ensure a smaller tour (up to 8 guests) we advise you to opt for our Douro Premium Tour. Best regards, Living Torus Team
