The renovated Wine Museum of Alcobaça reopened to the public in June 2013. Considered one of the jewels of the national wine heritage, it is installed in the old wine cellar that, in 1874, José Eduardo Raposo de Magalhães had it built there to implement and develop its production of wines JEM. The building represents a museological heritage of major importance in the wine-growing context in Portugal. Enriched during the 70's, 80's and 90's by Eng. Paixão Marques, the museological collection is the most complete in the country with regard to winemaking, covering significant aspects of the material culture of wine of unquestionable historical, scientific, industrial and ethnography that go from the seventeenth century to the advent of the twenty-first century. Composed of a universe with more than 8500 pieces of furniture, the permanent collection contemplates various types ranging from enology, ethnology, traditional technology, industrial archeology to the graphic arts, plastic or decorative. An integrated set within the concept of thematic exhibition and site musealization, contextualizing viticulture and viniculture (at different historical moments), correlative industries (cooperage, bottling, packaging glass), storage, distribution or consumption of wine

Duration: 2 hours

Stop At: Cortem Winery, Rua Joao Alves 37 39 Vidais, Leiria 2500-741 Portugal

Situated in the Estramadura (Lisboa Wines) in the DOC Obidos region, the vineyards are set in Hilly country near to Caldas da Rainha, The climate is temperate to cool, with a strong maritime influence and summer temperatures seldom above 30 degrees. Late harvests lead to well-structured wines with natural acidity but sometimes high alcohol content. Our vines were planted between 2000 and 2005 on cleared fields previously unused for 30 years and have been grown organically from the beginning leading to full certification in 2010. Grapes and wines of this vintage and beyond are organically certified.
Our charming and romantic wine tasting room " Sala de Provas" is probably the oldest building here and is a place where our wines can be savoured in a traditional atmosphere together with the food prepared and served by Helga, which truly compliment the wines.
We host regular wine tastings, by appointment, and we don't rush you, givng you up to eight different red wines, a talk about wine making and a slide show of the work and life at Cortém. The food, made by Helga, never runs out, and specialties of Cortém (cheese feet) and many other ones are served!
