Overview

Capture the maritime spirit of Belém on this 3-hour walking tour, adventuring around some of the most well-known spots in Lisbon. See the famous Vasca de Gama statue in Jardim Afonso de Albuquerque, as well as UNESCO World Heritage–listed monuments such as Jerónimos Monastery, Discoveries Monument, and Belém Tower. Join a small group limited to 6 people to experience personal attention and learn all about the Age of Exploration from your guide as you go. You have a choice for both morning or afternoon tours for your convenience.

What to Expect

Meet your small group in Jardim Afonso de Albuquerque at either 10am or 3pm, and get ready for your Belém adventure. In the public square, you can catch a glimpse of the Vasca de Gama statue — a tribute to the first Portuguese explorer to reach India by sea.

Follow your guide through Lisbon as he or she gives you insight into the history of the area, including its role in the 15th and 16th centuries and the Age of Enlightenment, when the Portuguese were some of the most instrumental explorers in the world. You'll stop at the Jerónimos Monastery — the first UNESCO World Heritage–listed site of your trip — and the Discoveries Monument that celebrates Portugal's explorers and seafarers.

Make sure to bring some extra money with you because the tour stops at Pastéis de Belém, a local pastry shop that’s more than 100 years old. Pick out Portuguese baked goods you can enjoy in the moment or take back to your hotel.

Your tour ends at Belém Tower, a UNESCO World Heritage-listed monument built in the 16th century.

The visit of the Tower and the Monastery isn't included in the tour but you'll be taken around the Tower. We visited the Tower separately and we can recommend it but be prepared for long queues. The same applies to Monastery.

Within the guided tour we could visit the church of the Monastery but not the Monastery itself. It's a separate visit. The Discoveries Monument cannot be climbed but there's a small exhibition inside.
