Amazing all day trip from Lisbon
Jan. 2020
Anna was great. She gave us so much information on the sites. Her English was perfect. I was traveling with my 19 year old son and he loved it. She was very accommodating and concerned about what we needed. Lunch was amazing - an outdoor patio that was covered and heated for January. We had Iberian pork which was delicious. The Chapel of Bones was something we had not seen before. We saw the Roman ruins and walked around Evora. The Stone Circles of Cromlech, the burial spot and the single stone were magical. Overall great tour and well done.

Evora and Almendres
Oct. 2019
First thing this trip was great. They made it very easy by picking us up and delivering us to our home. The driver was very informed and passionate about the subject. Everything was perfect for me. I sat in the front seat because I get motion sick but the people in the third seat could not hear anything. The tire/road noise was very bad. My suggestion is that the driver wear a microphone. If you are only 4 this would be perfect.

10,000 year old circle - backroads of portugal
Jun. 2019 • Friends
This was expensive tour; I think we paid around $90 each. There are other tours that will get you to Evora for less, but I'm guessing this cost so much because we also went to the Almendres Cromlech too. There was no way a bus could ride on the roads that we had to take to get there, so it had to be a van; therefore fewer people per guide. The roads are unpaved with some fairly large "dips". The Cromlech part was the part I really enjoyed. Evora was okay, but I didn't need to see it. 10,000 year old circle that was used to plant and harvest though, that's a find! Also we stopped at a small village for coffee and bathroom before we took the road to Cromlech, and I found this interesting also. There are some very small villages in Portugal that are different from very small rural areas in the U.S., so worth seeing if you're from the U.S.
Other comments: the guide was mid-twenties and knew the history, could speak English and Portuguese fluently, and picked us up at a hotel about 2 blocks from our AirBnB.

UNESCO World Heritage Town Évora, rivetting Chapel of Bones, Roman Ruins & mythical Stone Circles of Almendres Cromlech
Apr. 2019 • Family
We were very fortunate to have the enthusiastic and humorous, Nuno Rebelo as our Expert Guide for the Day. The reason we chose this Tour was because we are fascinated by archaeology and history and Around Lisbon was offering a Tour with so many inclusions in a single day!
We were collected on time from the doorstep of our Lisbon Hotel, in a very comfortable air conditioned, Wi-Fi equipped van by Nuno, which had more than enough room for our family of 4. Along the way to Évora, we were regaled with much conversation by him and I was very happy that my teenage daughters too were involved in the banter.
The moment we arrived at Évora, it started to rain, but that didn’t dampen our spirits. After taking us on a drive around the almost white, red roofed UNESCO World Heritage Town, Nuno took us into the glorious Cathedral. Trained as an Architect, he expertly guided us through all the main areas of the impressive structure [including the roof which offers a stunning 360degree view of Évora and its prominent Aqueduct] and even allowed us some free time to wander on our own. He was always at hand to take photographs of us whenever we requested. As the Évora Cathedral was embellished at different periods in time, there are many architectural styles to be admired, hence we were grateful to have the knowledgeable Nuno help us understand many nuances which would have been lost on the untrained eye.
After the Cathedral, we walked the cobbled streets of quaint Évora and grabbed a quick bite of Portugal’s famed Bifana sandwiches from an authentic café, surrounded by locals.
Then it was onwards to the Church housing the eerie Chapel of Bones with its various Galleries. The Church itself is very beautiful. The Chapel of Bones is a small room, choc a bloc full with bones. The walls, ceiling décor, pillars, everything has human bone. To us today it may seem strange, but in the past, it was the way of commemorating and immortalising the dead. The Galleries above the Chapel too have beautiful objets d’art and as Nuno pointed out, an incredible collection of Nativity Scenes sourced from around the world. The Nativity Scenes depicted in a single chestnut, match box and on colour pencil points were exceptional. The views of Évora one gets from crossing from one art gallery to another are also stunning.
After we were driven by Nuno to the ancient Roman farm of Tourega Villa. Located by a reservoir, in the backyard and fields of a local farming family, the original construction is mostly in ruins. But there is much explanation to show you how glorious it must have been in its day. The family who owns the property where the ruins were discovered has a huge amount of free roaming, animated fluffy sheep, which needless to say were providing us [especially my daughters] and the ancient site with the necessary authentic ambience of a farm, with their antics.
Later we were taken on a walk amongst cork trees by Nuno to the Great Dolmen of Zambujeiro. After teaching us about the interesting and fascinating manner of cork tree harvesting, we were shown the Dolmen with its massive stones. Once believed to be an ancient funerary chamber, though the site is currently in disarray, it is stupefying to imagine how the ancient folks managed to bring such large boulders to the location where they built the structure with the lack of modern transport and technology.
Our last stop was the mythical Almendres Cromlech stone circle. I wonder why this site which has far more stones, inscriptions and beauty surrounding it than the Stonehenge has received such little attention. Being amongst the ancient stones, being able to touch and walk between them was an ethereal experience for us. Especially with the rain and the greenery and nature surrounding us. Nuno made it a point to involve my daughters and play a guessing game with them of what the Stones may have been once used for and which stones had the ancient inscriptions. Needless to say, the game ensured their full involvement and gave my husband and I the chance to enjoy the Stones undisturbed.
After such an amazing day with Nuno, we were reluctant to return to our Lisbon hotel.
There are hardly any Tour Companies which will treat you to such an extensive Tour such as this and I assure you very few guides will be like Nuno, so knowledgeable and who puts his heart and affection first and thinks of business later. Despite the rain and a long day, he ensured that the entire day turned out just as planned, without rushing us along or getting irritated, despite our slow waling and frequent toilet breaks. He was also empathetic to our children’s needs and made it a point to direct us towards hidden gems and take us off the beaten path whenever possible. By the end of the day, we were so happy that we are determined to use Around Lisbon’s Services and request only for Nuno Rebelo on our future visits to Portugal.

Make Time to Do This!
Mar. 2019 • Friends
Our guide Filipe picked us up at our hotel right on time and we headed to Evora. Along the way he provided us with information about the town and what we would see there, as well as Portuguese history. We saw cork plantations and he explained the process of stripping the bark--fascinating. In the old, old, old town of Evora, we toured the Chapel of Bones, the Roman ruins, and other sites, and had lunch in the town plaza. After another short drive out into the countryside, we came to the Almendres Cromlech, a prehistoric circle of menhirs. It was absolutely amazing to see it there, just on the hill of cork oak trees, imagining the people who had constructed it thousands of years ago. Filipe then took us to see a smaller area of Roman ruins nearby that had been discovered on a private farm--amazing. We had this tour on our second day in Lisbon, and it gave us an experience and understanding of Portugal that we never could have had if we had stayed only in the city. Very highly recommended, especially if you can get Filipe as your guide!

Time Traveling around Evora
Feb. 2019 • Friends
It was great to get into the countryside of Portuagal,
So much to see in and around this Town.
The Stone circle, the Roman Villa ruins and the Bronze age buriel site were located at the end of unpaved roads, so we were able to view the sites almost alone.
Joan was a very good driver, and we always felt safe.

Amazing History and tour
Dec. 2018 • Family
I scheduled this tour on a whim, not sure what in the description caught my eye other than it didn't read like all the other popular tours with a jam-packed schedule but reasonably priced. The town of Evora is out in the eastern countryside and not crowded with people and tourists. David the guide was very knowledgeable about world history, history about Lisbon and Evora. He easily condensed the history into what he calls a "graphic-novel" version. He was well versed in English and got everybody into the conversation. The perfect tour guide who was also very funny.

It's a about and hour and half drive over to Evora where you see a Roman temple ruin, a cathedral, bone cathedral, fantastic lunch, visit a stone-age rock house and mehirs field. There were two folks who came singly on this trip but we all shared wine and opinions and views. Really was the perfect day for a tour.

A great day out
Nov. 2018 • Friends
My daughter and I travelled with Raquel to Evora. Her knowledge of the area was outstanding and we thoroughly enjoyed the view from the Cathedral roof-even though my daughter dislikes heights. The chapel of Bones was thought-provoking and the stones at Cromlech a good way to end the day. We were given plenty of time over lunch to eat where we wanted and do a little shopping. The walking was also broken up with a coffee break. This tour, with its prompt hotel pick up and truly excellent guide, is one of the best I have taken. I would totally recommend it.
