Overview

This Ria Formosa Island adventure is a great option for a day away from the hustle and bustle of Faro. After departing Faro Marina, you’ll glide down the waters of Ria Formosa with guide commentary to ensure you learn about the sites and spot scenic viewpoints. You won’t have to worry about missing out on the islands you pass as there will be multiple stop-offs en route, such as Ilha Deserta, Culatra Island, and Farol Island.

What to Expect
Embark on a beautiful and relaxing 5-hour boat trip from the town of Faro to discover the stunning scenery of the Ria Formosa Nature Park.

Depart from the Faro marina and cruise down the calm waters of Ria Formosa in a comfortable boat with sun shade. Float through this stunning coastal lagoon and learn from a knowledgeable skipper that will provide insight into the natural ecosystem of Ria Formosa and the culture and traditions of this area.

The first stop is on a deserted beach. This is a lovely spot and on summer months, you can even take a refreshing dive in crystal-clear waters surrounded by beautiful sand banks.

The boat trip continues to Culatra Island. During this second stop, you can visit this fascinating island. This is one of the most important fishing communities in the Eastern Algarve. Take your time to wander in this fishing community and its small harbor or even enjoy a lovely meal in one of the local restaurants.

Back on board, learn about the clam farms and the oyster beds of Ria Formosa. You will witness the oyster pickers and shellfish farmers working on the tidal flats of the lagoon as your guide comments on one of the most important economic activities in Ria Formosa.

Continuing aboard the boat, you’ll learn about Hangares in Culatra Island and its historical importance in the anti-submarine defense during World War I. The next stop is on Farol Island. Here you may walk to the lighthouse in the small community of Farol, the southernmost beach in Portugal.

The last stop is on Ilha Deserta. Here you can enjoy a walk along its long white sandy seashores where you’ll find lots of beautiful and different sea shells.

Learn about the typical vegetation of this beautiful marshland area, classified as one of the most important wetland for birds in all of Portugal, before slowly cruising back to the town of Faro, enjoying spectacular views of this approaching city on the way.

Enjoy a boat trip to the islands and nature of Ria Formosa. It will take you on a relaxing day in a paradise yet to be discovered.

Boat tour

Really great boat tour from 3 hrs with guide Pedro. He knows a lot of interesting things and stories about the nature, also for those less interested in birds alone;) Enjoyed it and would recommend it!
